Tofield welcomes new youth centre to town Kelsey Witham Staff Reporter
A new chapter for the youth of Tofield began on Family Day, Monday, Feb. 17, as Tofield Beaver County West Family Community and Support Services (TBWFCSS) officially opened the new youth centre in town. The centre is designed to provide youth ages 10 to 18 with a safe, inclusive environment to relax and enjoy the company of their peers. TBWFCSS organized a grand opening that was a community celebration to honour the significant milestone. “We had a pretty good turnout despite the weather that day, with nine youths attending. We were open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., ordered pizza and had iced tea, hot chocolate, and snack bars. The kids played board games, pool, and video games.” Executive Director Tracey Boast Radley stated. “This week, we had 17
youths attend one evening. It is very nice to see everyone come and enjoy the space. Our community programmers, Jaylynn Umphrey and August Ross, worked very hard to have the space ready, and they will continue to be the two regular faces the youth can expect to see at the centre,” Radley went on to say. The centre is located in the heart of town at the Tofield Arena. It caters to a variety of interests and will be open for the youth to enjoy Monday through Thursday evenings.

New acting commander and wife win Sweethearts Draw Kari Janzen Staff Reporter
Tofield RCMP detachment acting commander Cpl. Ken Sawyer entered his wife Jenn into The Tofield Mercury’s annual sweetheart draw at the Tofield Town Office at Chief Administrative Officer Cindy Neufeld’s prodding, and ended up being picked the lucky winner from hundreds of entries. On Monday, Feb. 24, Ken and Jenn went to many of the participating locations to collect their winnings. The couple live in Leduc
County, but are currently looking to buy a second home in Tofield. Cpl. Sawyer was working in Fort McMurray before being stationed in Tofield in January. The two met when both were with the military. “We got put on a course in Victoria, BC in 2002. Jenn was on the east coast, and I was on the west coast, and the course was held on the west coast, and she wound up sitting next to me,” Cpl. Sawyer said. “I was actually super grumpy that morning,” Jenn added. They were
married on March 15, 2003 and have one daughter. Jenn is a dog behavior consultant. This year’s participating businesses in the sweethearts draw included Tofield Subway ($40 gift certificate), The Sour Moose ($25 gift certificate), Tofield Packers ($50 gift certificate), Tofield Eyecare ($50 gift certificate), the Town of Tofield (gift basket), The Moonshine Café ($50 gift card), Busy B Bargains ($50 gift basket), Tilly’s (one medium, two topping pizza), and The Tofield Mercury (one year subscription).
