Elephant Hill Wildfire
Information Bulletin August 7, 2017
Fire Size: 117,170 hectares (estimated) Status: 30 per cent contained Resources: 457 firefighters, 23 helicopters, 105 pieces of heavy equipment, 86 support persons including two Incident Management Teams, 89 structural protection personnel are all supporting efforts on this fire.
Progress to date: Crews have relocated from the 99 Mile Fire Camp back to the Clinton Fire camp to decrease travel times. The Cache Creek Fire Camp remains in place. Crews continue to fortify the north flank of the fire from Clinton towards Young Lake. The north flank is approximately 12 km from Green Lake. Guards continue to be constructed along the east flank which is approximately 5 km from Young Lake. The SE and SW flank have held above both Hwy 1 and Hwy 99. Crews continue building guard lines around the SW flank of the fire north of Hwy 99. Guards are also being constructed in the SE flank of the fire near Battle Creek Rd. The fire west of Hwy 97 has seen some growth to the west and this will be an area of focus for night crews. Structural crews continue to support the BC Wildfire Service including along the Hwy 97 corridor, Loon Lake and Young Lake areas. Fire fighters, heavy equipment and helicopters continue their efforts focusing on homes and infrastructure. Lighter winds have allowed crews to work day and night burning off of guard lines removing fuel from the fire. Within the fire perimeter there are still pockets of dry fuels that have not burned and these ignite when winds change direction sending embers into the unburned fuels within and outside of the fire perimeter. We are seeing this behavior in several areas of the fire. The most effective way to eliminate this effect is to continue burn offs of these fuels in a controlled manner when weather conditions permit. Every effort is being made to protect homes and infrastructure both within and outside the current fire perimeter. Please note that this is an active fire and the situation can change quickly.
