Sudan trapped in a ‘nightmare of violence’, UN chief tells Security Council
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Monday the people of Sudan are trapped in a “nightmare of violence, hunger, disease and displacement”, as the brutal war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues to rage.

“The suffering is growing by the day, with almost 25 million people now in need of humanitarian assistance,” Mr. Guterres told ambassadors at the Security Council, emphasizing the dire conditions civilians are enduring 18 months into the conflict.
He described the situation as a series of unrelenting nightmares.
“Thousands of civilians killed, and countless others facing unspeakable atrocities, including widespread rape and sexual assaults.”
Mass killings and sexual violence have also recently been reported in Aj Jazirah state, he added, and warned that the conflict in Sudan has the potential to destabilize the entire region, affecting neighbouring countries from the Sahel to the Red Sea.
Displacement, disease, famine
The Secretary-General also warned that famine conditions are already taking hold in displacement camps in North Darfur, leaving 750,000 people on the brink of starvation.
WFP delivers life-saving aid to one million people in Burkina Faso
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has reached a significant milestone in its humanitarian response in Burkina Faso, according to a report released on Tuesday. The agency has provided assistance to more than one million crises affected people so far this year through crucial funding from the United States.
The humanitarian response comes at a critical time for the West African nation, which has been grappling with instability, security challenges and humanitarian needs. According to news reports, more than half of Burkina Faso currently operates beyond government control following a military takeover in 2022.
Burkina Faso’s human rights situation deteriorated significantly in 2023, amid deadly attacks by Islamist armed groups against civilians. Both military forces and pro-government militia were found to have committed abuses during counterinsurgency operations.
More widely according to UN humanitarian reports, the Sahel region has been threatened for years by a proliferation of armed groups. Beginning in northern Mali, jihadist-linked insurgent pushed south, brining lawlessness to northern Burkina Faso and western Niger, while also threatening the stability of neighbouring countries. WFP and the US International Development Bureau of Humanitarian Affairs (BHA) successfully delivered vital humanitarian assistance to over one million crisis affected people in Burkina Faso.
UN official urges more ambitious, credible climate action plans
Proposed actions by countries to mitigate the worsening impacts of climate change “fall miles short of what is needed,” according to a major UN report has revealed on Monday.
UN climate change secretariat (UNFCCC)’s 2024 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Synthesis Report showed that current plans would result in emissions 51.5 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent by 2030 – just 2.6 per cent below 2019 levels.
With nations preparing for the UN climate change conference (COP29) in Baku next month, Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of UNFCCC urged governments to convert pledges into “real world, real economy results”.
At COP28, which was hosted by the United Arab Emirates, delegations had committed to tripling renewables, advancing the global goal on adaptation and transitioning away from all fossil fuels.
“COP29 must be an enabling COP, delivering concrete and ambitious outcomes on climate finance that take account of developing country needs, recognizing that such support is core business to protect every nation and the global economy from rampaging climate impacts,” Mr. Stiell emphasised.
Greenhouse gases surged to new highs in 2023, warns UN weather agency
New data released by the UN on Monday indicating that greenhouse gases have hit a record high shows once again that urgent action and not words is needed from the world’s major polluters to protect us all from climate change, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) insisted. The appeal comes as global leaders prepare to gather for the UN’s Climate Change Conference in Baku next month, amid repeated dire warnings about the human cost of ignoring the existential crisis from UN Secretary-General António Guterres and others.
Echoing the UN chief’s longstanding appeals, WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett told journalists that carbon dioxide (CO2) – one of the three main greenhouse gases, along with methane and nitrous oxide - is now accumulating in the atmosphere “faster than at any time experienced during human existence”. Because of the extremely long lifetime of CO2 in the atmosphere, “we are committed to rising temperatures for many, many years to come,” she added. WMO’s 2024 Greenhouse Gas Bulletin offers a stark, scientific reminder that rising CO2 levels need to be slowed. In 2004, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 377.1 parts per million (ppm), while in 2023, this reached 420 ppm, according to WMO’s Global Atmosphere Watch Network. “This is an increase of 42.9 parts per million, or 11.4 per cent in just 20 years,” Ms. Barrett explained.
The Atlanta University Center in Atlanta, Georgia, will host a National N’Daba (Great Gathering) Reparations Summit on November 1-2, 2024, in collaboration with 100 Black students and young leaders.

Ahead of 2024, the National Urban League has developed a comparative analysis of the civil rights records and commitments of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris versus former President Donald Trump and Vice-Presidential nominee J.D. Vance. The National Urban League has a longstanding history of evaluating presidential candidates and administrations, most recently highlighted in our ‘Evaluation for Progress Report on the Biden-Harris Administration’, released as part of our 2024 State of Black America report. Serving as a complement to that comprehensive report, this guide presents an analysis conducted by the National Urban League’s Washington Bureau. Our evaluation considered the candidates’ policy records, public statements, and policy platforms. This document aims to:
Provide an overview of the two presidential tickets, including background information on the candidates
Highlight the impact of former policy positions and actions on the communities served by the Urban League movement
Assess policy platforms for each of the candidates with a focus on how those policies advance civil rights
Inform and equip stakeholders with critical insights to support the ongoing fight for racial equity and social justice.
To guarantee long-term success and sustainability in the areas of education, the economy, culture, and politics throughout the rest of the twenty-first century, please be ready to take part in this year’s N’Daba (Great Gathering).

According to Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Guyanese residing overseas who have a Guyanese passport or ID are entitled to receive the $100,000 cash grant.
To better serve the Guyanese, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced that the government would be moving forward with a $100,000 one-time cash grant initiative instead of the $200,000 one-time cash grant per household. This was because some households may have experienced internal conflicts, among other things.
During his weekly news conference at Freedom House, Jagdeo clarified certain misunderstandings and false information regarding the cash-grant program, stating that residents do not need to be residents to get this financial assistance.
“That makes Guyanese living abroad [above 18 years old] who have an ID card or a passport also eligible for the cash grant,” he stated. However, the PPP General Secretary clarified that recipients must complete a rigorous registration process before they can pick up this money in Guyana. He continued by saying: “The grant will not be paid overseas. We have no intention of going to New York or Toronto to register people. They will have to be here, and they are eligible as Guyanese, providing they have the necessary documents so they could receive the cash grant.”
Jagdeo further emphasized that this guarantees that individuals are not subjected to discrimination based on their place of residence.
Guyanese will get more than $60 billion from the $100,000 cash-grant program, which is more than the previous amount allotted for household payments. When President Ali made his pronouncement, he stated: “We believe that this is the best course of action and as a responsible government, as a government that understands that we have a responsibility to ensure all feel included, a part of the system. It is important that we build a system that is robust in delivering this grant, and its simplest way, most verifiable way, was $100,000 for every Guyanese.”
Additionally, Jagdeo defended the government’s choice to depart from the original plan by pointing out: “We may have more than 600,000 individuals. We were aiming for about 300,000 households at $200,000
each; that would have been $60 billion, but we may have more than 600,000 people. It may be a bit more money, but it will be an infinitely fairer system.”
International attention must remain focused on Haiti, where political uncertainty persists and rampant gang violence and food insecurity continue to plunge the country “into a spiralling crisis”, a senior official with the World Food Programme (WFP) said on Friday.
Waanja Kaaria, WFP Representative and Country Director in Haiti, briefed journalists in New York alongside the agency’s Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Lola Castro.
She cited the latest UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis which shows that some 5.4 million people in Haiti, roughly half the population, are suffering from acute hunger.
“This includes about 6,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) sheltering in sites where we have also seen pockets of IPC5…the highest level, and this is also displayed in famine-like conditions,” she said, speaking via videoconference. Young lives at risk
Additionally, 270,000 children across the Caribbean country are acutely malnourished.
“We know also that hunger significantly increases the likelihood of engaging in adverse coping mechanisms, and especially dire for young people is that risk of being recruited by armed groups and sliding into criminality,” she said.
Armed gangs have been terrorizing Haiti for several years now, especially the capital, Port-au-Prince, forcing people to flee their homes.
Ms. Kaaria reported that a recent increase in attacks has uprooted tens of thousands more people. Numbers have doubled in the last three months, bringing total dis-
placement to over 700,000. Aid under attack
In response to the crisis in Haiti, WFP is supporting vulnerable people, particularly in the capital city, and this work can be difficult.
On Thursday, a UN helicopter operated by the agency was hit by gunfire while departing Port-au-Prince for Les Cayes but was able to land safely. An investigation is underway.
“The interruption is only today, where we have put all flights on hold for today just to allow us time to assess the implications of the gunfire and to allow us to establish additional routes for next week, and keeping an eye on the safety of our staff,” she said.
Meals and more
WFP has been responding to the crisis in Haiti by supporting vulnerable people, particularly in the capital city, including during peak violence earlier this year.
They have provided over two million hot meals to over 135,000 IDPs through partners on the ground. The food is prepared in local kitchens and some of the workers are themselves displaced people. Meals are made from locally grown and locally produced ingredients.
Ms. Kaaria said she is always inspired when visiting the kitchens, where cooking starts early in the morning so that the food is ready to be served by noon.
“This ensures that displaced people across the capital can actually receive at least one hot nutritious meal in a day,” she said Children in Haiti eat a hot meal provided by the UN and partners at school.
from the discourse around repatriations.
During a recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, Browne made the remark to Commonwealth leaders.
UK High Commissioner Vishnu Dhan-
paul and Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley joined him.
According to a Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs media release, Browne addressed remarks made by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who had stated that CHOGM should not discuss reparations or a formal apology.
Browne stated, “There should be no place for anything resembling imperial arrogance at the Commonwealth Affairs of the Commonwealth.”
The delegates were reminded that this “is our Commonwealth” by him.
Browne’s speech also addressed the continued harm caused by colonialism, chattel slavery, and genocide against Indigenous peoples, as well as the function of regional and international organizations in achieving recognition, restitution, and true justice.
Repatriation has become more and more popular in recent years.
In 2022, Prince William, the Duke of
Cambridge, called slavery “abhorrent” but refrained from offering an apology on a trip to eight Caribbean nations.
After that visit, Rowley declared it was time for the UK to make financial amends.
Speaking at a PNM ceremony honoring Spiritual Baptist Shouter Liberation Day in March the year 2022, Rowley stated, “Tonight, I want to say to Prince William, having said that, I believe you. But I believe you more if you do what you must now do, which is the offer of reparation to the people who were wronged.”
The National Committee on Reparations was established by the Cabinet last year to seek compensation from all European colonizers for African enslavement and Native genocide.
A formal apology, debt cancellation, and the removal of public monuments and signs honoring people who, according to the committee, profit from colonial atrocities are all part of the group’s retaliation plan.
The UK government refused to grant the grandson of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela, an entrance visa on October 25, 2024, due to his sympathy for Hamas and his position on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Despite having a South African government passport, which normally grants him visa-free entrance, Mandla Mandela was told he would require a visa, which prevented him from traveling to the UK earlier this month to speak at pro-Palestinian rallies in Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.
Nonetheless, Mandela received a letter from the UK Home Office notifying him that his presence in the country was “not conducive to the public good” and that his “support for Hamas” was why his visa application was rejected.
On October 24, 2024, Mandela told reporters that he got the letter dated October 21.
The letter read, “Your presence in the UK has been assessed as not conducive for the public good on the grounds that you have engaged in unacceptable behavior. You have made multiple statements which explicitly support Hamas and their terrorist violence, including glorifying the October 7 attack on Israel and their recently deceased leader Ismail Haniyeh.”
Several of Mandela’s Instagram postings expressing his sympathy for Hamas and the Palestinians are included in the letter, including one that features him with
Haniyeh, who was killed in an airstrike in July of this year.
It further states that Mandela uploaded a picture of himself with Khaled Meshaal, a prominent Hamas commander and that he attended Haniyeh’s funeral in August after seeing him twice this year in January and April.
The letter noted, “As such, your presence in the UK is considered to pose a threat to UK society as it would highly likely cause tensions amongst UK Jewish communities. It is in the community’s interests to refuse your visa to protect public safety and prevent disorder or crime in the UK.”
When asked for comments, the Home Office did not immediately reply.
Mandela stated that he would continue to show his solidarity for the Palestinians despite the visa rejection.
He remarked, “We can never be silenced, and we will never let the refusal of a visa prevent us from standing for justice, peace, and equality. We will continue to raise our voice against the unjust occupation, genocide, and ethnic cleansing of Gaza and all of Occupied Palestine sponsored by the UK and its ilk.”
He compared the difficulties his grandfather Nelson Mandela faced—who was imprisoned for 27 years for his involvement in the fight against apartheid—to the denial of his visa, which he claimed was an attempt to limit his freedom of expression and mobility. Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first democratically elected
leader in 1994 after the white minority government’s apartheid regime was overthrown.
“My grandfather’s movement and freedom were likewise restricted but he refused the condition of release from prison that restricted him to the Transkei. He remained firm in his pursuit of justice and continued
to be a symbol of freedom, justice, and human rights for all,” he expressed. The UK’s move has drawn criticism from pro-Palestinian groups, such as the Sheffield Palestine Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid in the UK and the Desmond Tutu Foundation in South Africa.
On October 25, 1983, the world watched as U.S. troops—alongside forces from six Caribbean nations—descended upon the small island of Grenada in what became known as “Operation Urgent Fury.” It was a mission that caught the world’s attention, and its impact was felt both immediately and in the years that followed.
Grenada, a tiny island in the Caribbean, had been under the leadership of a leftist government led by Maurice Bishop since 1979. Bishop’s rise to power, inspired by Marxist ideals, was a significant shift for the island, aligning it with countries like Cuba and the Soviet Union during a tense Cold War period. Under Bishop, Grenada established ties with Cuba, which led to Cuban construction teams building an airstrip on the island. This raised alarms in Washington, which feared Grenada could become a Soviet outpost in the region.
Trouble escalated in October 1983 when internal conflicts among Grenada’s leadership led to Bishop’s house arrest, followed
by his tragic execution by hardline members of his own party. The situation was spiraling out of control, and to complicate matters, there were over 1,000 American students studying at the island’s St. George’s University School of Medicine. With the country in turmoil, concern for their safety grew among the students’ families and the U.S. government.
The next step came quickly. Just days after Bishop’s death, President Ronald Reagan ordered an invasion, framing it as a mission to restore order, rescue the American students, and prevent the establishment of a hostile, Soviet-aligned government in the Caribbean. American troops, joined by forces from Caribbean nations like Jamaica and Barbados, launched a fullscale operation on October 25. It was swift and decisive, although the fighting that followed took its toll on both sides. Over the course of a few months, more than 100 lives were lost, but the U.S.-led invasion successfully ended the conflict.
For Grenada, it marked a turning point, leading to democratic reforms and stabilizing the country. Yet, the invasion remains controversial, with opinions divided on whether it was a justified intervention or an overreach of U.S. power.
Today, October 25 is celebrated in
Grenada as Thanksgiving Day, a holiday commemorating the return to peace and order. It’s a reminder of a critical moment when a small island in the Caribbean found itself at the center of global attention, forever changing its path toward independence and democracy.
Former premier Reuben Meade led his newly formed United Alliance (UA) to victory in the general elections here, according to the preliminary figures released by the Montserrat Electoral Commission early on Friday morning. It said that the UA had won five of the nine seats in the Legislative Assembly followed by the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) with three seats and the incumbent Movement for Change and Prosperity (MCAP) winning one seat.
The election saw the defeat of both the outgoing premier, Easton Taylor-Farrell, and the recently appointed MCAP leader, Dr Samuel Joseph, as well as a former
speaker of the parliament, Osborne Shirley.
MCAP’s sole winner is the outgoing agriculture minister, while former premier Donaldson Romeo, who had been an independent candidate in the 2019 general election, is one of three PDM successful candidates.
While there were 3,464 voters eligible to cast ballots in the election for the ‘one constituency’ Montserrat has become following the destruction caused by the volcano whose last eruption was in 2013, each voter was allowed to cast nine ballots. (CMC)

As Antigua and Barbuda celebrate 43 years of independence, Carib News joins in congratulating a nation that has steadily charted its own course through resilience, adaptability, and a fierce commitment to the ideals of self-determination and progress. This anniversary marks another chapter in Antigua’s ongoing story, one that is steeped in history yet propelled by forward-thinking leaders who envision a more sustainable, prosperous future.
The journey toward independence in Antigua was a long one, marked by the tenacity of its people and their dedication to shaping a future free from colonial rule. The labor movements of the 1930s and 1940s played a crucial role in the push for autonomy. Union organizers and community leaders advocated for the rights of workers and campaigned for political reforms, paving the way for Antigua’s first general elections in 1951. A significant milestone came in 1967 when Antigua and Barbuda became an Associated State of the United Kingdom, granting the island full control over its internal affairs while Britain retained responsibility for defense and foreign relations.
However, it wasn’t until November 1, 1981, that Antigua and Barbuda achieved full independence. The attainment of independence was both a culmination of longstanding aspirations and a promise of a brighter future, one where Antigua would exercise its sovereignty as a member of the global community.
Today, under the leadership of Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Antigua stands as a proud, independent state facing the demands of a globalized world. Browne, now in his second term, has championed economic diversification and social development while addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time. His administration’s commitment to creating a stable, resilient economy has not gone unnoticed. Reflecting on the significance of independence, Prime Minister Browne recently remarked, “Our independence is not just a day of celebration; it’s a reminder of our strength, our history, and our commitment to building a future that honors the sacrifices of those before us.” Browne has also emphasized the importance of regional unity and cooperation, consistently
advocating for stronger ties within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). As a regionalist, Browne sees Antigua’s prosperity as intertwined with the fortunes of its Caribbean neighbors, recognizing that collective action on issues such as climate change, trade, and economic policy is crucial to ensuring the region’s sustainability. At the heart of Antigua’s progress is the spirit of its people—a community known for its warmth, resilience, and indomitable pride. Antiguans are not only the custodians of a rich cultural heritage but also pioneers in fields ranging from education and agriculture to the arts and environmental advocacy. Their dedication and fortitude are evident in every facet of Antiguan society, from the vibrant festivals that celebrate the island’s culture to the grassroots efforts that protect its natural landscapes. It is their collective strength and passion that continues to drive the nation forward, embodying the true essence of independence and ensuring that each generation builds upon the legacy of those before them. As we celebrate Antigua’s achievements, it is impossible to overlook the role of its people in shaping a future that is as bold and inspiring as their dreams.
Perhaps no issue underscores Antigua’s vulnerability more than the existential threat posed by climate change. As a small island nation, Antigua and Barbuda are on the frontlines of the climate crisis, bearing the brunt of rising sea levels, intensified hurricanes, and changing weather patterns that threaten to undermine the island’s infrastructure, agriculture, and tourism sector—the backbone of its economy. In recent years, Prime Minister Browne has been vocal on the global stage, calling for climate justice and for greater financial commitments from larger, industrialized nations whose emissions disproportionately contribute to global warming.
“The fight against climate change is one we cannot afford to lose,” Browne has said, imploring world leaders to take decisive action. His administration has championed policies aimed at reducing Antigua’s carbon footprint and increasing its resilience to climate impacts. From investing in renewable energy to advocating for climate-resilient infrastructure, Antigua has become a leading voice in the Caribbean,
The Democratic Party was listless, confused worried, and in a bit of desperate straits regarding the upcoming election with Biden vs Donald Trump there was gloom and doom within the party and the prospect was not bright at all, but then over the past weekend Joe Biden took a most courageous and patriotic step by removing himself as the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party and in short order endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the candidate for the presidency. In a statement on his Social Media accounts, Biden said, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” . Shortly after that statement, he put all his support towards Harris. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year…Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump.” That announcement changed the dynamics of politics in the United States and the party went from weariness to great energy, excitement and engagement.
Within four hours just from the efforts of black women who got on a, quickly arranged, zoom call and organized 44,000 black women to
demonstrating that small nations can indeed make a difference in the global climate conversation.
Browne’s government has also sought to leverage the island’s natural resources sustainably, encouraging investments in solar energy and exploring potential in geothermal resources. These initiatives not only help Antigua reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels but also position the nation as a model for sustainable development in the region.
As Antigua works to build a resilient economy, Browne’s administration has placed a strong emphasis on diversification. Historically reliant on tourism, which accounts for a substantial portion of its GDP, Antigua is now investing in sectors such as technology, agriculture, and financial services to create a more balanced economy. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the need for diversification as the tourism industry, a cornerstone of Antigua’s economy, experienced significant setbacks. In response, Browne’s government has rolled out measures to attract foreign direct investment, support small businesses, and encourage innovation in emerging sectors.
The government’s fiscal policies aim to foster economic stability and attract responsible investment that aligns with Antigua’s long-term goals. This includes facilitating public-private partnerships to modernize infrastructure, improving access to financing for local businesses, and enacting legislation that encourages foreign businesses to establish operations on the island. Additionally, the administration has taken strides to address unemployment and income inequality by creating job training programs and incentivizing entrepreneurship. In line with these economic initiatives, Browne has shown a keen awareness of the need to balance growth with sustainability. His policies reflect an understanding that the island’s environmental health is inseparable from its economic future, as both tourism and agriculture depend on the island’s natural resources. With this in mind, the government is actively working to develop industries that respect and preserve Antigua’s unique ecology.
Prime Minister Browne has been a steadfast advocate for regional integration, understanding that a united Caribbean is stronger in addressing shared challenges. Within CARICOM, Browne has called for enhanced collaboration on matters of trade, climate policy, and security, urging member states to work in concert rather than in competition. His leadership reflects a commitment to CARICOM’s vision of a single, robust Caribbean economy capable of negotiating with larger economies and institutions. Antigua’s alignment with CARICOM extends to addressing the needs of citizens across borders, from establishing protocols for regional travel to advocating for stronger disaster preparedness programs that protect the Caribbean’s most vulnerable populations. By strengthening ties with CARICOM nations, Antigua under Browne’s leadership is helping to build a cohesive regional identity, one that honors shared cultural heritage and reinforces economic solidarity. As Antigua celebrates its independence, it stands at a crossroads, balancing tradition with innovation, local priorities with global responsibilities. This island nation exemplifies the resilience of small states that continue to make meaningful contributions on the world stage. Prime Minister Browne’s vision for Antigua is clear: to create a society that is economically resilient, environmentally sustainable, and regionally integrated—a nation that embodies the ideals of independence by taking charge of its own future.
In the words of Browne, “Our goal is not simply to survive in this global environment but to thrive. We want to ensure that our people enjoy the dignity and prosperity that independence has promised.” As Antigua moves forward, Carib News celebrates with pride and admiration, looking forward to witnessing the continued growth of a nation whose spirit remains unbroken and whose ambitions remain boundless. To Antigua and Barbuda: Happy 43rd Independence. May your journey continue to inspire, and may the next 43 years bring even greater accomplishments and joy to the heart of the Caribbean.
come together we are told more were trying to get on the call but could not. Still, they immediately up their stake in the game and within 4 hours raised over $2.5 million, demonstrating the power of the grassroots and the excitement and energy that the candidacy of Vice President Harris brought to the table.
The Democratic Party realized more than $50 million within the first 24 hours of the candidacy making this the most ever raised by any candidate within 24 hours. This was certainly a demonstration of the hunger for an alternative to a Biden/Trump.
There was a remarkable show of unity among Democrats to the Kamala Harris nomination started of course with the grassroots reaction but following quickly were endorsements from many of the political leaders and right after state after state pledging their delegates to Kamala Harris. The response so far to Kamala Harris candidacy is overwhelming and it signals to the nation that people truly want engagement and the candidacy that brings that engagement will bring success.
Kamala Harris, once a professional prosecutor said in her opening remarks to the campaign staff that she was prepared for Trump because she knew Donald Trump’s type she has prosecuted them throughout her years and she knew how to handle them but what was even more
impressive was her vision for the future where she talks about the future of the country going forward and what her candidacy represents as opposed to that of Trump who is only looking backward and backward is not the direction American people are looking to go.
It won’t be an easy matter because we are all familiar with Donald Trump and is megabase Donald Trump’s problem with the truth and he’s always lying and will continue to lie, he is already attacking Kamala Harris but she seems prepared for that, and look forward to engaging him and who has and better performance in bringing the truth to the American voters.
We all have a lot of work to do and we need to take Kamala Harris’ position `when she said when we fight we win’ so we should be prepared for the fight.
There is a special movement afoot to organize Caribbean people for Kamala and it is being encouraged to get out the vote, to give grassroots contributions and to energize and ring bells speak to neighbors and develop a whirlwind of activities for Kamala Harris.
We are proud of her Caribbean roots and so is she and so we have a special stake in bringing victory to a person with a black immigrant background both from India and the Caribbean and we need to play our part, meaning readers of Carib News, to be a part of this fight
to be a part of this movement this opportunity to put the United States of America on a path of progress, a part of going forward and away from the repressive policies and we know repressive they are of Donald. Anti-immigrant policies of Donald Trump, the deportation policy of Donald Trump and it is an opportunity for us all to be engaged fully in this battle in this experience of supporting Kamala Harris in this upcoming election.
President Biden has shown true leadership and his action could very well save this democracy of the United States and spare it from a disaster. We are all grateful to him for his statesman-like position and this huge opportunity to make their voices heard by supporting Kamala Harris. Going to the polls, spreading the word to our friends and neighbors and for those of us who can provide whatever contribution we can make, because we know the billionaires and the privileged rich folks will be pouring money into Donald Trump’s camp because those are the persons that he cares for and they are the ones who he will support but the voice of the people can be heard we all working together as Vice President Harris says let us all get to the polls and let us all fight for democracy and in this case where winning is a must.
(Reissued Editorial for Election 2024)
Ambassador Lionel Max Hurst, Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister, announced that the government has set aside a substantial budget—between one and two million dollars—for Antigua and Barbuda’s 43rd Independence celebrations. The investment is a reflection of the country’s commitment to honoring its rich heritage, marking another year of independence with an array of meaningful events.
This year’s celebrations, organized by the Ministry of Creative Industries, kicked off on October 23rd in Barbuda, followed by Antigua’s opening Youth Rally. The festivities will reach their peak on November 1st with the grand Independence Food Fair, a Ceremonial Parade in Antigua, and a Flag Raising ceremony in Barbuda. Ambassador Hurst provided insight into how the budget is allocated. Transportation is a major expense, with school buses running long hours to bring students and performers to venues, often returning them home late at night. The coordination of over a thousand student participants requires careful planning, and refreshments are provided for those
involved in activities far from their schools or homes.
An essential yet often overlooked component of the budget is stadium maintenance. Cleaning services are planned for both the Ceremonial Parade and cricket events to follow, ensuring a clean and safe environment for the community.
Adding to the historical resonance, Hurst shared that this celebration is rooted in the nation’s past traditions. “There was a time when we celebrated Commonwealth Day and Prince Charles’ birthday, with the Treasury of Antigua and Barbuda funding treats for young students,” he said, “and today, we continue that tradition by investing in our own Independence.”
“This is a costly undertaking,” Hurst concluded, “but it is one we believe is necessary to truly honor our nation’s story.”
In addition to funding flags, which must be imported, and Independence-themed items, the government’s investment underscores the importance of celebrating the journey of Antigua and Barbuda’s independence.

President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz are on a mission to build a future where every American family has a genuine chance not just to survive but to thrive. Both were raised in middle-class families, and they know the heartbeat of America lies in the strength of its middle class. For them, a healthy economy means one where working families have real opportunities to get ahead. This vision will guide their administration as they work to
make the American Dream accessible to everyone.
Harris and Walz recognize that the costs of healthcare, housing, groceries, and other essentials are still too high for many. They are committed to easing this burden by reducing everyday expenses and cutting taxes for more than 100 million working and middle-class Americans. Their presidency will champion an “Opportunity Economy,” where barriers are removed, opportunities
are expanded, and every American has a shot at success. Through partnerships with workers, community leaders, unions, entrepreneurs, and industry, Harris and Walz will work to create jobs, revitalize communities, and foster economic growth in rural areas, small towns, suburbs, and major cities alike.
In this Opportunity Economy, more Americans will achieve the dream of homeownership. With a plan to end the housing shortage, they’ll work alongside the private sector to build three million new homes and provide $25,000 in down payment assistance, ensuring more families can experience the pride and security of owning a home.
Small businesses are the bedrock of the American economy, and the Harris-Walz administration understands their unique challenges. Their plan will expand tax deductions for new startups, cut through the red tape, and foster an environment where entrepreneurs can thrive. This initiative aims to spur 25 million new business applications, revitalizing Main Streets across the country.
Investing in American innovation and manufacturing will be a priority. The administration will enhance workforce programs, particularly for those without college degrees, and strengthen industries like clean energy, tech, and manufacturing to position the U.S. as a leader in the global market. Moreover, Harris and
Walz pledge to protect Social Security and Medicare, ensuring all Americans can count on these essential benefits.
For too long, Americans have watched opportunities drift further out of reach. Harris and Walz are ready to lead a New Way Forward—a path to greater security, prosperity, and opportunity. With a proven track record of fighting for Americans as a prosecutor, Attorney General, Senator, and Vice President, Kamala Harris is committed to being a president for all, united by shared hopes for a brighter tomorrow. In stark contrast, Donald Trump’s Project 2025 Agenda stands at odds with these goals. Trump’s approach favors billionaires, not the middle class. His plans include tax breaks that benefit the wealthy and add trillions to the national debt. Even more alarming is his proposed national sales tax, a “Trump tax,” that would cost middle-class families nearly $4,000 a year in added expenses.
For Harris and Walz, this fight is personal. They know the struggles of the middle class because it’s where they came from and who they’re fighting for. Their campaign is one for every American, dedicated to the values of opportunity and fairness. As leaders, they’ll fight to build a future that promises opportunity and security for all—because that’s the America they believe in, and the America they’re ready to lead.
A colonial-era rule that essentially forbids abortions is being contested by doctors, nurses, and activists in Antigua and Barbuda, sparking a discussion about women’s reproductive rights in the small twinisland nation.
This month, a top local court rejected the government’s move to quash the case, ruling that a legal challenge filed by a doctor and a nonprofit organization will proceed. Attorney Sherrie-Ann Bradshaw,
who brought the constitutional challenge, stated that if the lawsuit is successful, it may result in a historic ruling and encourage other governments to follow suit.

Antigua and Barbuda only permit abortions when a woman’s life is in jeopardy.
On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at 2pm EST, Governor Albert Bryan Jr. hosted a press conference in Government House in St. Croix to announce and unveil a historic landmark and an unprecedented regional economic development relations, and cooperation partnership with the Barbados-based, Pleion Group Inc and its subsidiary company, Connect Caribe, a regional ferry service organization established to provide maritime transportation for the movement of people and cargo within the Caribbean for the purpose of
enhanced trade and regional connectivity. The partnership is to establish St. Croix, US Virgin Islands (USVI), as the third (3rd) regional transportation hub to create a major Maritime Ferry Network of moving people and cargo throughout the Caribbean with CARICOM’s member States of Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago as the two other main hubs to better connect regional economies in promoting and improving trade and commerce between the US and the Caribbean.
On October 19, 2024, the University of Guyana stated that every attempt was being made to meet its operating expenses and have thousands of students graduate the following month.
Following the government’s announcement of free university tuition, the publicly-owned postsecondary educational institution stated that “some conditions” pertaining to students and other interpre-
tations needed to be addressed immediately.
“The relevant departments of the University and the Government of Guyana are diligently addressing some of these issues regarding implementation mechanisms and the payment of fees owing to the University by prospective graduates and continuing students.
UG noted in a released statement, “This is
so that all eligible students can graduate on time and the operations of the University for which fees have always been needed can continue uninterrupted until January 2025 when this first semester officially ends.”
UG stated that students must pay their outstanding tuition payments, but they applauded the government’s plan to assume responsibility for high-quality tuition-free
education starting in January 2025. “Revenue from fees cover more than 50% of the University of Guyana’s operating expenses and is always desperately needed towards the end of the year,” UG said.
The statement explained, “The University of Guyana, therefore, wishes to assure its stakeholders that all possible avenues are being pursued to ensure the operations and best interests of everyone...

Dear Voter,
Vice President Kamala Harris is determined to make affordable health care a right for all Americans, not a privilege. As part of The Opportunity Agenda, she’s already working to strengthen the Affordable Care Act by securing lower premiums through the Biden-Harris tax credit enhancements, saving families an average of $800 annually. As President, Harris plans to make these tax credits permanent, so lower premiums are here to stay. Harris has been a strong advocate for reducing the cost of prescription drugs and addressing the needs of Medicare beneficiaries. She’s championed the $35 cap on insulin and the $2,000 annual cap on out-of-pocket expenses for seniors, a significant step toward affordable health care for everyone. If elected, she’ll work to
extend these price caps to cover all Americans, ensuring nobody has to choose between life-saving medication and other essential expenses.
As Vice President, Harris cast a crucial tie-breaking vote on the Inflation Reduction Act, giving Medicare the power to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices. This isn’t just a one-time win—Harris is committed to expanding these negotiations, so more medications can be included, benefiting even more Americans.
Her commitment to addressing medical debt has already led to the removal of medical debt from credit reports and the cancellation of $7 billion in medical debt for over three million Americans. She envisions doing more by working with states to cancel medical debt for even more
families, helping Americans breathe easier financially.
Harris also pledges to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare, programs crucial for seniors across the country. By ensuring that the wealthiest pay their fair share in taxes, she will make these benefits secure for future generations, so every American can rely on them when they need them most.
Harris has a proven track record, leading initiatives to combat maternal mortality, particularly in communities where women face the highest risks.
She successfully urged nearly every state to extend Medicaid postpartum coverage, so mothers receive the health care they need for a full year after giving birth.
As President, Harris will also focus on supporting the care economy—making
child care and senior care more affordable, raising wages for care workers, and expanding home care services for seniors and people with disabilities.
Kamala Harris’s health care plans reflect her dedication to making America fairer, healthier, and more secure for all.
As a Senator, she fought Donald Trump’s attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Harris also plans to launch in The Opportunity Agenda for Black Men, a National Health Equity Initiative focused on Black men, to address health conditions that disproportionately affect them, such as sickle cell disease, diabetes, and mental health issues. Specifically, she plans to expand preventative screening programs for prostate and colon cancer; expand the budget of the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities; and fully fund the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Sickle Cell Data Collection Program, building a sickle cell database aimed at improving prevention and treatment for the blood disorder.
NYC Health + Hospitals today announced the one-year anniversary of telehealth abortion care through its Virtual ExpressCare service. In its first year, the service has provided over 2,700 virtual visits, mailed over 800 medication abortion kits, and referred an additional 1,050 patients for in-person care. The average wait time for a virtual visit is less than 7 minutes. Over 75% of the patients identify as people of color. The service has a 90% patient satisfaction rate and a Net Promoter Score of 74. The telehealth service is available 7 days a week, 9am – 9pm, and will provide patients with access to safe and legal abortion care. The NYC Health + Hospitals Virtual ExpressCare service is available in over 200 languages and can be accessed at expresscare.nyc or by calling 631-EXP-Care (631-3972273). ExpressCare has helped tens of thousands of people in need of care connect with a medical provider. We will continue to make reproductive health care services available and accessible for all.”
“We’re proud of the impact our telehealth abortion service has made in its first year, providing safe and accessible care to underserved communities,” said Erfan Karim, MPH, Executive Director of NYC Health + Hospitals Virtual ExpressCare. “This milestone highlights NYC Health + Hospitals’ ability to leverage technology to break down barriers and ensure equitable reproductive health care for all New Yorkers.”
“This service has allowed people to access abortion care earlier in the pregnancy and without the same opportunity cost that a clinic appointment has,” said Marisa Nadas, MD, MPH, NYC Health + Hospitals Reproductive Health Clinical Lead and Virtual ExpressCare Associate Medical Director. “It has reached people who would have otherwise struggled to come in for care. People deserve to access abortion care when and where they need it, and telehealth helps make that possible.”
The telehealth abortion service by NYC Health + Hospitals is based in and for New York City. Medication is mailed to New York City addresses only and is available to clinically eligible patients who are up to 10 weeks into their pregnancy.
The American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) gala, one of the most prominent charity events in New York City, will feature a new collection from Jamaican fashion and cultural business Cooyah this evening.
The event will be place at the Plaza Hotel in New York and will include a specially designed Cooyah pop-up store.
The Hummingbird Gala, an annual fundraiser for AFJ, honors notable figures who have contributed to Jamaica’s progress. This year’s honorees include American luxury shoe designer, hotelier, gallery owner, and restaurateur Vanessa Noel; Kingston-American singer, songwriter, model, and actress Grace Jones; and brothers Robert and Mark White, who founded Sanmerna Paper Products in 2003 and were homegrown Jamaicans who were instrumental in establishing a robust paper industry in Jamaica.
Jones, who started the cross-dressing movement in the 1980s, appeared in a number of
well-known movies and had a major impact on the disco music scene before going on to fuse genres, has been credited with inspiring many other artists. She was named the 40th best dance club musician of all time by Billboard in 2016.
Cooyah views the collaboration with the AFJ as the perfect way to start its “Welcome back to New York” weekend. The brand will showcase pieces from its latest resort collection for ladies, along with button-down shirts, polos, and limited-edition coats. A portion of the sales revenues will be donated to the charity by Cooyah.
Cooyah’s managing partner, Gary Codner, stated, “We are happy to collaborate with AFJ in this way as the gala provides a platform for the diaspora to unite for impactful causes. This aligns seamlessly with the AFJ’s commitment to advancing education and healthcare for vulnerable communities in Jamaica.” Codner added, “Our involvement underscores
our commitment to celebrating Jamaican culture and giving back in tangible ways. After a challenging year for Jamaicans, from hurricanes to earthquakes, it is essential to make a meaningful contribution that reflects the roots and vitality of our brand.”
This year’s Gala is anticipated to be an incredible celebration of the island’s influence on world culture, with performances by Baby Cham, Lukie D, and Max Glazer during the after-party.
The streetwear brand and Blue Mahoe worked together to design a unique T-shirt that would be delivered especially for each gala attendee. Additionally, Cooyah will display unique works by renowned artist Homer Bair. To help with the gala’s fundraising, the item will be put up for auction.
A fascinating silent auction collection, three courses of food, fine wines, and other glittering accents will all be included at the 2024 Hummingbird Gala.

It was featured on Sean Paul’s Grammy-winning album Dutty Rock, which took home the Best Reggae Album title.

Laura Facey’s arresting exhibition PORTENT opened on Sunday October 13 2024 under the wide skies of St. Ann, Jamaica. The art exhibition venue was open-air. It embraced the forest walks, cow pastures and fields encircling the Facey family home of over 50 years, a working cattle farm, mixed agriculture and family growing ground in the deep rural community of Orange Hall. This special place is where, at that time, the only gold piece known
to have been found in Jamaica was unearthed by patriarch Maurice Facey as he extended his Bellevue residence in 1983. That Taino Guanin earpiece, is now housed in the Bank of Jamaica museum, donated to the nation by this gift-giving family. The Sunday October skies saw another offering.
Laura Facey, a career artist of 5 decades, gave her family, her community, her country and the world another “golden” gift.
PORTENT is an art installation spread over three acres. The invitation offers a walking experience from the Polo Field, overseen by a dapple grey curious horse, through the Beehive Gate and arboreal boulevard, up and out to the surrounding landscape which Curator/Creative Director Melinda Brown has expansively “rewoven” as an organic, living tapestry.
Anchored by Laura Facey’s Carvings which range “from miniature to monumental”, each work presented on the walking tour has been reaped from a fallen, not felled, tree.
Lovingly harvested from the property’s woodlands, these works in quango, cedar, mahogany, lignum vitae stand arms outstretched in welcome throughout the grounds and fields, and in the artist’s open sided studio.
ture,” “No Lie” with Dua Lipa, and “Breathe,” which he co-wrote with Blu Cantrell, have all achieved 2X Platinum status and sold over 1.2 million copies nationwide.

As a new wave of gang violence rages through the struggling Caribbean nation, JetBlue and Spirit Airlines suspended flights to Haiti this week, according to sources at the airport’s international terminal. JetBlue has kept its direct flight from New York City, but both US airlines have not publicly disclosed the reason for the suspension, even though gang violence has recently increased in Haiti in several neighborhoods in the capital and other areas. According to a UN report issued on Wednesday, assaults in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan region have resulted in the displacement of over 10,000 persons in the last week.
Years of escalating political, humanitarian, and security issues have plagued Haiti, but early this year, strongarmed gangs started coordinated attacks that resulted in the resignation of the country’s unelected prime minister. After that, an interim government was established, and an international assistance mission headed by Kenya was sent to support Haiti’s police force, though it hasn’t yet grown to its full size.
Violence has continued to rise as police have struggled to retake control of the capital’s vast gang-controlled areas.
At least two women, one of whom was eight months pregnant, were killed in attacks in the southern Solino area of the city earlier this week, which forced hundreds to flee, according to officials.
Following a significant gang attack in early October in the central village of Pont-Sonde that left 115 citizens dead and several more injured, there was more bloodshed. This week, the US embassy also said that gangs had fired at two of its armored vehicles, although no one was hurt.
Additionally, a helicopter belonging to the United Nations organization World Food Program (WFP) was struck by gunfire Thursday while it was hovering above Port-auPrince.
All eighteen passengers on board were unharmed in the safe landing.
WFP Haiti Director Waanja Kaaria stated during a press conference on October 25, 2024, “Uncertainty in Haiti continues while the ramping violence of armed groups and food insecurity continues to plant Haiti into a spiral crisis that requires urgent attention.”
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are the epitome of real love, even though celebrity couples come and go, making it difficult to believe. The parents’ love is evident, and they are beloved by the fans. Their evening in Barbados eating food wrapped in aluminum foil may be their greatest pictures, even if we’ve seen them looking dapper at the Met Gala.
The pair was photographed on October 22 enjoying some food from Ras the Burger Guy at the Zouk nightclub on Rihanna’s home island of Barbados.
The celebrities appeared to be a pair of normal foodies, enjoying hot dogs and hamburgers with greater enthusiasm than before.
They showed their love by arranging a feast for everyone nearby, according to a media outlet. The expressions on their faces as they posed with their meal were pure joy.
The couple has two kids together: Riot, age one, and Rza, age two. According to Rocky, whose true name is Rakim Mayers,
who appeared on the cover of W Magazine, he knew Rih was the lady he wanted to have children with from the beginning.
I was aware of that from our early years. “I think we both did,” he said.
Despite meeting in 2012 when they were both about 26, they didn’t begin dating until late 2019, and in 2020 they confirmed their relationship.
The Fenty business mogul told the Interviewer in April that they began dating with “caution” since they were aware that they may harm one another. She remarked, “We’ve seen each other outside of relationships. We knew what we were capable of and the trouble that we could bring to each other’s lives. We can make or break each other’s hearts. And so, we started dating with a lot of caution.”
“They let whatever happens happen,” she said, comparing the relationship to a flower. Either it will perish or it will bloom. However, I’m going to let it make its own judgment. Clearly, it blossomed after two babies.

Her exceptional performance also earned her the 2023/24 UEFA Women’s Champions League Young Player of the Season award.
