The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has reached a significant milestone in its humanitarian response in Burkina Faso, according to a report released on Tuesday.

The agency has provided assistance to more than one million crises affected people so far this year through crucial funding from the United States.

The humanitarian response comes at a critical time for the West African nation, which has been grappling with instability, security challenges and humanitarian needs.

According to news reports, more than half of Burkina Faso currently operates beyond government control following a military takeover in 2022.

Burkina Faso’s human rights situation deteriorated significantly in 2023, amid deadly attacks by Islamist armed groups against civilians. Both military forces and pro-government militia were found to have committed abuses during counterinsurgency operations.

More widely according to UN humanitarian reports, the Sahel region has been threatened for years by a proliferation of armed groups. Beginning in northern Mali, jihadist-linked insurgent pushed south, brining lawlessness to northern Burkina Faso and western Niger, while also threatening the stability of neighbouring countries. WFP and the US International Development Bureau of Humanitarian Affairs (BHA) successfully delivered vital humanitarian assistance to over one million crisis affected people in Burkina Faso.

WORLD BRIEFS UN official urges more ambitious, credible climate action plans Proposed actions by countries to mitigate the worsening impacts of climate change “fall miles short of what is needed,” according to a major UN report has revealed on Monday.

UN climate change secretariat (UNFCCC)’s 2024 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Synthesis Report showed that current plans would result in emissions 51.5 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent by 2030 – just 2.6 per cent below 2019 levels.

With nations preparing for the UN climate change conference (COP29) in Baku next month, Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of UNFCCC urged governments to convert pledges into “real world, real economy results”.

At COP28, which was hosted by the United Arab Emirates, delegations had committed to tripling renewables, advancing the global goal on adaptation and transitioning away from all fossil fuels.

“COP29 must be an enabling COP, delivering concrete and ambitious outcomes on climate finance that take account of developing country needs, recognizing that such support is core business to protect every nation and the global economy from rampaging climate impacts,” Mr. Stiell emphasised.

Greenhouse gases surged to new highs in 2023, warns UN weather agency New data released by the UN on Monday indicating that greenhouse gases have hit a record high shows once again that urgent action and not words is needed from the world’s major polluters to protect us all from climate change, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) insisted.

The appeal comes as global leaders prepare to gather for the UN’s Climate Change Conference in Baku next month, amid repeated dire warnings about the human cost of ignoring the existential crisis from UN Secretary-General António Guterres and others.

Echoing the UN chief ’s longstanding appeals, WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett told journalists that carbon dioxide (CO2) – one of the three main greenhouse gases, along with methane and nitrous oxide - is now accumulating in the atmosphere “faster than at any time experienced during human existence”. Because of the extremely long lifetime of CO2 in the atmosphere, “we are committed to rising temperatures for many, many years to come,” she added.

WMO’s 2024 Greenhouse Gas Bulletin offers a stark, scientific reminder that rising CO2 levels need to be slowed. In 2004, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 377.1 parts per million (ppm), while in 2023, this reached 420 ppm, according to WMO’s Global Atmosphere Watch Network.

“This is an increase of 42.9 parts per million, or 11.4 per cent in just 20 years,” Ms. Barrett explained.

Within the current Complete Reparations Movement, a varied and developing mix of committee members, presenters, and young campaigners will participate in this year’s fourth annual National N’Daba (Great Gathering).

The lengthy, intricate, and sometimes violent history of how Black people have been treated in America has gained significant attention recently. Given the historical and contemporary impact of Black Americans’ failure to attain and uphold equality in this nation, it is imperative that we not only have a conversation about full reparations but also develop a unique model and implementation of the National Reparations Declaration under the guidance of a knowledgeable committee and young organizers.

The youth and participants in this year’s national N’Daba/summit on reparations will have four advantages: Within the prevailing and complete reparations

movement, the tactic and approach of functional unity and co-leadership, The “Collective Culture Model” will be established to orient us to the real process and methodology of obtaining full reparations, and a wide range of the country’s top Black students, Black youth, and Black scholars representing various theological, political, philosophical, and ideological perspectives will take part.

In addition, the establishment of select committees in the areas of public and mental health, economics and investments, state and land acquisition, education and culture, and public policy and law There will be training on coordinating sustainability and health for co-leadership of trauma-based work, as well as the creation, coordination, and execution of local organizing committees for full restitution.

To guarantee long-term success and sustainability in the areas of education, the economy, culture, and politics throughout the rest of the twenty-first century, please be ready to take part in this year’s N’Daba (Great Gathering).

Urban League Work on Election Day The New York Urban League has organized Project Jericho an initiative to engage a cross section of African-American organizations in a Get Out the Vote effort in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The project is the first step in developing a New York City Black Agenda.

Guyana – Overseas Guyanese Eligible for Cash Grants with Documentation According to Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Guyanese residing overseas who have a Guyanese passport or ID are entitled to receive the $100,000 cash grant.

To better serve the Guyanese, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced that the government would be moving forward with a $100,000 one-time cash grant initiative instead of the $200,000 one-time cash grant per household. This was because some households may have experienced internal conflicts, among other things.

During his weekly news conference at Freedom House, Jagdeo clarified certain misunderstandings and false information regarding the cash-grant program, stating that residents do not need to be residents to get this financial assistance.

“That makes Guyanese living abroad [above 18 years old] who have an ID card or a passport also eligible for the cash grant,” he stated.

However, the PPP General Secretary clarified that recipients must complete a rigorous registration process before they can pick up this money in Guyana.

He continued by saying: “The grant will not be paid overseas. We have no intention of going to New York or Toronto to register people. They will have to be here, and they are eligible as Guyanese, providing they have the necessary documents so they could receive the cash grant.”

Jagdeo further emphasized that this guarantees that individuals are not subjected to discrimination based on their place of residence.

Guyanese will get more than $60 billion from the $100,000 cash-grant program, which is more than the previous amount allotted for household payments.

When President Ali made his pronouncement, he stated: “We believe that this is the best course of action and as a responsible government, as a government that understands that we have a responsibility to ensure all feel included, a part of the system. It is important that we build a system that is robust in delivering this grant, and its simplest way, most verifiable way, was $100,000 for every Guyanese.”

Additionally, Jagdeo defended the government’s choice to depart from the original plan by pointing out: “We may have more than 600,000 individuals. We were aiming for about 300,000 households at $200,000

each; that would have been $60 billion, but we may have more than 600,000 people. It may be a bit more money, but it will be an infinitely fairer system.”

‘Spiralling Crisis’ in Haiti Demands Continued Global Attention: WFP

International attention must remain focused on Haiti, where political uncertainty persists and rampant gang violence and food insecurity continue to plunge the country “into a spiralling crisis”, a senior official with the World Food Programme (WFP) said on Friday.

Waanja Kaaria, WFP Representative and Country Director in Haiti, briefed journalists in New York alongside the agency’s Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Lola Castro.

She cited the latest UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis which shows that some 5.4 million people in Haiti, roughly half the population, are suffering from acute hunger.

“This includes about 6,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) sheltering in sites where we have also seen pockets of IPC5…the highest level, and this is also displayed in famine-like conditions,” she said, speaking via videoconference.

Young lives at risk Additionally, 270,000 children across the Caribbean country are acutely malnourished.

“We know also that hunger significantly increases the likelihood of engaging in adverse coping mechanisms, and especially dire for young people is that risk of being recruited by armed groups and sliding into criminality,” she said.

Armed gangs have been terrorizing Haiti for several years now, especially the capital, Port-au-Prince, forcing people to flee their homes.

Ms. Kaaria reported that a recent increase in attacks has uprooted tens of thousands more people. Numbers have doubled in the last three months, bringing total dis-

placement to over 700,000.

Aid under attack In response to the crisis in Haiti, WFP is supporting vulnerable people, particularly in the capital city, and this work can be difficult.

On Thursday, a UN helicopter operated by the agency was hit by gunfire while departing Port-au-Prince for Les Cayes but was able to land safely. An investigation is underway.

“The interruption is only today, where we have put all flights on hold for today just to allow us time to assess the implications of the gunfire and to allow us to establish additional routes for next week, and keeping an eye on the safety of our staff,” she said.

Meals and more WFP has been responding to the crisis in Haiti by supporting vulnerable people, particularly in the capital city, including during peak violence earlier this year.

They have provided over two million hot meals to over 135,000 IDPs through partners on the ground. The food is prepared in local kitchens and some of the workers are themselves displaced people. Meals are made from locally grown and locally produced ingredients.

Ms. Kaaria said she is always inspired when visiting the kitchens, where cooking starts early in the morning so that the food is ready to be served by noon.

“This ensures that displaced people across the capital can actually receive at least one hot nutritious meal in a day,” she said Children in Haiti eat a hot meal provided by the UN and partners at school.

Reparations – Caribbean Slams UK Arrogance on Slavery Questions

Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs, has demanded that the term “imperial arrogance” be eliminated from the discourse around repatriations.

During a recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, Browne made the remark to Commonwealth leaders.

According to a Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs media release, Browne addressed remarks made by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who had stated that CHOGM should not discuss reparations or a formal apology.

Browne stated, “There should be no place for anything resembling imperial arrogance at the Commonwealth Affairs of the Commonwealth.”

The delegates were reminded that this “is our Commonwealth” by him.

Browne’s speech also addressed the continued harm caused by colonialism, chattel slavery, and genocide against Indigenous peoples, as well as the function of regional and international organizations in achieving recognition, restitution, and true justice.

Repatriation has become more and more popular in recent years.

In 2022, Prince William, the Duke of

Cambridge, called slavery “abhorrent” but refrained from offering an apology on a trip to eight Caribbean nations.

After that visit, Rowley declared it was time for the UK to make financial amends.

Speaking at a PNM ceremony honoring Spiritual Baptist Shouter Liberation Day in March the year 2022, Rowley stated, “Tonight, I want to say to Prince William, having said that, I believe you. But I believe you more if you do what you must now do, which is the offer of reparation to the people who were wronged.”

The National Committee on Reparations was established by the Cabinet last year to seek compensation from all European colonizers for African enslavement and Native genocide.

A formal apology, debt cancellation, and the removal of public monuments and signs honoring people who, according to the committee, profit from colonial atrocities are all part of the group’s retaliation plan.

UK – Bans Mandela’s Grandson for His Stance on the War in Gaza The UK government refused to grant the grandson of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela, an entrance visa on October 25, 2024, due to his sympathy for Hamas and his position on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Despite having a South African government passport, which normally grants him visa-free entrance, Mandla Mandela was told he would require a visa, which prevented him from traveling to the UK earlier this month to speak at pro-Palestinian rallies in Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.

Nonetheless, Mandela received a letter from the UK Home Office notifying him that his presence in the country was “not conducive to the public good” and that his “support for Hamas” was why his visa application was rejected.

On October 24, 2024, Mandela told reporters that he got the letter dated October 21.

The letter read, “Your presence in the UK has been assessed as not conducive for the public good on the grounds that you have engaged in unacceptable behavior. You have made multiple statements which explicitly support Hamas and their terrorist violence, including glorifying the October 7 attack on Israel and their recently deceased leader Ismail Haniyeh.”

Several of Mandela’s Instagram postings expressing his sympathy for Hamas and the Palestinians are included in the letter, including one that features him with

Haniyeh, who was killed in an airstrike in July of this year.

It further states that Mandela uploaded a picture of himself with Khaled Meshaal, a prominent Hamas commander and that he attended Haniyeh’s funeral in August after seeing him twice this year in January and April.

The letter noted, “As such, your presence in the UK is considered to pose a threat to UK society as it would highly likely cause tensions amongst UK Jewish communities.

It is in the community’s interests to refuse your visa to protect public safety and prevent disorder or crime in the UK.” When asked for comments, the Home Office did not immediately reply.

Mandela stated that he would continue to show his solidarity for the Palestinians despite the visa rejection.

He remarked, “We can never be silenced, and we will never let the refusal of a visa prevent us from standing for justice, peace, and equality. He compared the difficulties his grandfather Nelson Mandela faced—who was imprisoned for 27 years for his involvement in the fight against apartheid—to the denial of his visa, which he claimed was an attempt to limit his freedom of expression and mobility. Grenada – The Day U.S. Troops Invaded the Country On October 25, 1983, the world watched as U.S. troops—alongside forces from six Caribbean nations—descended upon the small island of Grenada in what became known as “Operation Urgent Fury.” It was a mission that caught the world’s attention, and its impact was felt both immediately and in the years that followed.

Grenada, a tiny island in the Caribbean, had been under the leadership of a leftist government led by Maurice Bishop since 1979. Bishop’s rise to power, inspired by Marxist ideals, was a significant shift for the island, aligning it with countries like Cuba and the Soviet Union during a tense Cold War period. Under Bishop, Grenada established ties with Cuba, which led to Cuban construction teams building an airstrip on the island. This raised alarms in Washington, which feared Grenada could become a Soviet outpost in the region.

Trouble escalated in October 1983 when internal conflicts among Grenada’s leadership led to Bishop’s house arrest, followed

by his tragic execution by hardline members of his own party. The situation was spiraling out of control, and to complicate matters, there were over 1,000 American students studying at the island’s St. George’s University School of Medicine.

With the country in turmoil, concern for their safety grew among the students’ families and the U.S. government.

The next step came quickly. Just days after Bishop’s death, President Ronald Reagan ordered an invasion, framing it as a mission to restore order, rescue the American students, and prevent the establishment of a hostile, Soviet-aligned government in the Caribbean. American troops, joined by forces from Caribbean nations like Jamaica and Barbados, launched a fullscale operation on October 25. It was swift and decisive, although the fighting that followed took its toll on both sides.

Over the course of a few months, more than 100 lives were lost, but the U.S.-led invasion successfully ended the conflict.

For Grenada, it marked a turning point, leading to democratic reforms and stabilizing the country. Yet, the invasion remains controversial, with opinions divided on whether it was a justified intervention or an overreach of U.S. power.

Today, October 25 is celebrated in

Grenada as Thanksgiving Day, a holiday commemorating the return to peace and order. It’s a reminder of a critical moment when a small island in the Caribbean found itself at the center of global attention, forever changing its path toward independence and democracy.

Former premier Reuben Meade led his newly formed United Alliance (UA) to victory in the general elections here, according to the preliminary figures released by the Montserrat Electoral Commission early on Friday morning.

It said that the UA had won five of the nine seats in the Legislative Assembly followed by the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) with three seats and the incumbent Movement for Change and Prosperity (MCAP) winning one seat.

The election saw the defeat of both the outgoing premier, Easton Taylor-Farrell, and the recently appointed MCAP leader, Dr Samuel Joseph, as well as a former

speaker of the parliament, Osborne Shirley.

MCAP’s sole winner is the outgoing agriculture minister, while former premier Donaldson Romeo, who had been an independent candidate in the 2019 general election, is one of three PDM successful candidates.

While there were 3,464 voters eligible to cast ballots in the election for the ‘one constituency’ Montserrat has become following the destruction caused by the volcano whose last eruption was in 2013, each voter was allowed to cast nine ballots.

Celebrating 43 Years of Independence: Antigua’s Journey and Future on the World Stage As Antigua and Barbuda celebrate 43 years of independence, Carib News joins in congratulating a nation that has steadily charted its own course through resilience, adaptability, and a fierce commitment to the ideals of self-determination and progress. This anniversary marks another chapter in Antigua’s ongoing story, one that is steeped in history yet propelled by forward-thinking leaders who envision a more sustainable, prosperous future.

The journey toward independence in Antigua was a long one, marked by the tenacity of its people and their dedication to shaping a future free from colonial rule. The labor movements of the 1930s and 1940s played a crucial role in the push for autonomy. Union organizers and community leaders advocated for the rights of workers and campaigned for political reforms, paving the way for Antigua’s first general elections in 1951. A significant milestone came in 1967 when Antigua and Barbuda became an Associated State of the United Kingdom, granting the island full control over its internal affairs while Britain retained responsibility for defense and foreign relations.

However, it wasn’t until November 1, 1981, that Antigua and Barbuda achieved full independence. The attainment of independence was both a culmination of longstanding aspirations and a promise of a brighter future, one where Antigua would exercise its sovereignty as a member of the global community.

Today, under the leadership of Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Antigua stands as a proud, independent state facing the demands of a globalized world. Browne, now in his second term, has championed economic diversification and social development while addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time. His administration’s commitment to creating a stable, resilient economy has not gone unnoticed.

As a small island nation, Antigua and Barbuda are on the frontlines of the climate crisis, bearing the brunt of rising sea levels, intensified hurricanes, and changing weather patterns that threaten to undermine the island’s infrastructure, agriculture, and tourism sector—the backbone of its economy. In a statement on his Social Media accounts, Biden said, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” .

Shortly after that statement, he put all his support towards Harris. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year…Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”

That announcement changed the dynamics of politics in the United States and the party went from weariness to great energy, excitement and engagement.

Within four hours just from the efforts of black women who got on a, quickly arranged, zoom call and organized 44,000 black women to

come together we are told more were trying to get on the call but could not. Still, they immediately up their stake in the game and within 4 hours raised over $2.5 million, demonstrating the power of the grassroots and the excitement and energy that the candidacy of Vice President Harris brought to the table.

The Democratic Party realized more than $50 million within the first 24 hours of the candidacy making this the most ever raised by any candidate within 24 hours. This was certainly a demonstration of the hunger for an alternative to a Biden/Trump.

There was a remarkable show of unity among Democrats to the Kamala Harris nomination started of course with the grassroots reaction but following quickly were endorsements from many of the political leaders and right after state after state pledging their delegates to Kamala Harris. The response so far to Kamala Harris candidacy is overwhelming and it signals to the nation that people truly want engagement and the candidacy that brings that engagement will bring success.

Kamala Harris, once a professional prosecutor said in her opening remarks to the campaign staff that she was prepared for Trump because she knew Donald Trump’s type she has prosecuted them throughout her years and she knew how to handle them but what was even more

demonstrating that small nations can indeed make a difference in the global climate conversation.

Browne’s government has also sought to leverage the island’s natural resources sustainably, encouraging investments in solar energy and exploring potential in geothermal resources.

These initiatives not only help Antigua reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels but also position the nation as a model for sustainable development in the region.

As Antigua works to build a resilient economy, Browne’s administration has placed a strong emphasis on diversification. Historically reliant on tourism, which accounts for a substantial portion of its GDP, Antigua is now investing in sectors such as technology, agriculture, and financial services to create a more balanced economy. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the need for diversification as the tourism industry, a cornerstone of Antigua’s economy, experienced significant setbacks. We are proud of her Caribbean roots and so is she and so we have a special stake in bringing victory to a person with a black immigrant background both from India and the Caribbean and we need to play our part, meaning readers of Carib News, to be a part of this fight

Antigua/Barbuda 43rd Independence Anniversary Ambassador Lionel Max Hurst, Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister, announced that the government has set aside a substantial budget—between one and two million dollars—for Antigua and Barbuda’s 43rd Independence celebrations. The investment is a reflection of the country’s commitment to honoring its rich heritage, marking another year of independence with an array of meaningful events.

This year’s celebrations, organized by the Ministry of Creative Industries, kicked off on October 23rd in Barbuda, followed by Antigua’s opening Youth Rally. The festivities will reach their peak on November 1st with the grand Independence Food Fair, a Ceremonial Parade in Antigua, and a Flag Raising ceremony in Barbuda.

Ambassador Hurst provided insight into how the budget is allocated. Transportation is a major expense, with school buses running long hours to bring students and performers to venues, often returning them home late at night. The coordination of over a thousand student participants requires careful planning, and refreshments are provided for those

involved in activities far from their schools or homes.

An essential yet often overlooked component of the budget is stadium maintenance. Cleaning services are planned for both the Ceremonial Parade and cricket events to follow, ensuring a clean and safe environment for the community.

Adding to the historical resonance, Hurst shared that this celebration is rooted in the nation’s past traditions. “There was a time when we celebrated Commonwealth Day and Prince Charles’ birthday, with the Treasury of Antigua and Barbuda funding treats for young students,” he said, “and today, we continue that tradition by investing in our own Independence.”

“This is a costly undertaking,” Hurst concluded, “but it is one we believe is necessary to truly honor our nation’s story.”

Antigua/Barbuda - Colonial USVI Signs MoU to Hub Era Abortion Laws New Caribbean Ferry Challenged

A colonial-era rule that essentially forbids abortions is being contested by doctors, nurses, and activists in Antigua and Barbuda, sparking a discussion about women’s reproductive rights in the small twinisland nation.

This month, a top local court rejected the government’s move to quash the case, ruling that a legal challenge filed by a doctor and a nonprofit organization will proceed. Attorney Sherrie-Ann Bradshaw,

who brought the constitutional challenge, stated that if the lawsuit is successful, it may result in a historic ruling and encourage other governments to follow suit.

On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at 2pm EST, Governor Albert Bryan Jr. hosted a press conference in Government House in St. Croix to announce and unveil a historic landmark and an unprecedented regional economic development relations, and cooperation partnership with the Barbados-based, Pleion Group Inc and its subsidiary company, Connect Caribe, a regional ferry service organization established to provide maritime transportation for the movement of people and cargo within the Caribbean for the purpose of

enhanced trade and regional connectivity.

The partnership is to establish St. Croix, US Virgin Islands (USVI), as the third (3rd) regional transportation hub to create a major Maritime Ferry Network of moving people and cargo throughout the Caribbean with CARICOM’s member States of Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago as the two other main hubs to better connect regional economies in promoting and improving trade and commerce between the US and the Caribbean.

Following the government’s announcement of free university tuition, the publicly-owned postsecondary educational institution stated that “some conditions” pertaining to students and other interpre-

tations needed to be addressed immediately.

“The relevant departments of the University and the Government of Guyana are diligently addressing some of these issues regarding implementation mechanisms and the payment of fees owing to the University by prospective graduates and continuing students.

UG noted in a released statement, “This is

so that all eligible students can graduate on time and the operations of the University for which fees have always been needed can continue uninterrupted until January 2025 when this first semester officially ends.”

UG stated that students must pay their outstanding tuition payments, but they applauded the government’s plan to assume responsibility for high-quality tuition-free

education starting in January 2025. “Revenue from fees cover more than 50% of the University of Guyana’s operating expenses and is always desperately needed towards the end of the year,” UG said.

NYC Health + Hospitals Announces Telehealth Abortion Care Via Mail York City has stood up to protect and defend reproductive rights and make care accessible to all in need. NYC Health + Hospitals’ Virtual

NYC Health + Hospitals today announced the one-year anniversary of telehealth abortion care through its Virtual ExpressCare service.

In its first year, the service has provided over 2,700 virtual visits, mailed over 800 medication abortion kits, and referred an additional 1,050 patients for in-person care. The average wait time for a virtual visit is less than 7 minutes.

Over 75% of the patients identify as people of color. The service has a 90% patient satisfaction rate and a Net Promoter Score of 74. The service allows patients in NYC seeking abortion care to speak to a New York State-licensed health care professional on demand by video or phone for an assessment, counseling and access to medication if eligible. The telehealth service is available 7 days a week, 9am – 9pm, and will provide patients with access to safe and legal abortion care. The NYC Health + Hospitals Virtual ExpressCare service is available in over 200 languages and can be accessed at expresscare.nyc or by calling 631-EXP-Care (631-3972273). A flyer about the program is available in 13 languages: English, Spanish, Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, French, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Korean, Polish, Russian, Simple Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Urdu.

NYC - AFJ Honored Grace Jones The American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) gala, one of the most prominent charity events in New York City, will feature a new collection from Jamaican fashion and cultural business Cooyah this evening.

The event will be place at the Plaza Hotel in New York and will include a specially designed Cooyah pop-up store.

The Hummingbird Gala, an annual fundraiser for AFJ, honors notable figures who have contributed to Jamaica’s progress. This year’s honorees include American luxury shoe designer, hotelier, gallery owner, and restaurateur Vanessa Noel; Kingston-American singer, songwriter, model, and actress Grace Jones; and brothers Robert and Mark White, who founded Sanmerna Paper Products in 2003 and were homegrown Jamaicans who were instrumental in establishing a robust paper industry in Jamaica.

Jones, who started the cross-dressing movement in the 1980s, appeared in a number of

well-known movies and had a major impact on the disco music scene before going on to fuse genres, has been credited with inspiring many other artists. She was named the 40th best dance club musician of all time by Billboard in 2016.

Cooyah views the collaboration with the AFJ as the perfect way to start its “Welcome back to New York” weekend. The brand will showcase pieces from its latest resort collection for ladies, along with button-down shirts, polos, and limited-edition coats. A portion of the sales revenues will be donated to the charity by Cooyah.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) reports that the song sold over 400,000 units in the UK, as determined by The Official Charts Company, earning it the Brit Certified Gold Award on Friday, October 25, 2024.

Laura Facey’s arresting exhibition PORTENT opened on Sunday October 13 2024 under the wide skies of St. Ann, Jamaica.

The art exhibition venue was open-air. It embraced the forest walks, cow pastures and fields encircling the Facey family home of over 50 years, a working cattle farm, mixed agriculture and family growing ground in the deep rural community of Orange Hall. This special place is where, at that time, the only gold piece known

to have been found in Jamaica was unearthed by patriarch Maurice Facey as he extended his Bellevue residence in 1983. That Taino Guanin earpiece, is now housed in the Bank of Jamaica museum, donated to the nation by this gift-giving family. The Sunday October skies saw another offering.

Haiti - Jetblue and Spirit Airlines Suspend Fights Because of Increased Gang Violence As a new wave of gang violence rages through the struggling Caribbean nation, JetBlue and Spirit Airlines suspended flights to Haiti this week, according to sources at the airport’s international terminal. JetBlue has kept its direct flight from New York City, but both US airlines have not publicly disclosed the reason for the suspension, even though gang violence has recently increased in Haiti in several neighborhoods in the capital and other areas.

According to a UN report issued on Wednesday, assaults in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan region have resulted in the displacement of over 10,000 persons in the last week.

Years of escalating political, humanitarian, and security issues have plagued Haiti, but early this year, strongarmed gangs started coordinated attacks that resulted in the resignation of the country’s unelected prime minister.

After that, an interim government was established, and an international assistance mission headed by Kenya was sent to support Haiti’s police force, though it hasn’t yet grown to its full size.

Violence has continued to rise as police have struggled to retake control of the capital’s vast gang-controlled areas.

At least two women, one of whom was eight months pregnant, were killed in attacks in the southern Solino area of the city earlier this week, which forced hundreds to flee, according to officials.

Following a significant gang attack in early October in the central village of Pont-Sonde that left 115 citizens dead and several more injured, there was more bloodshed.

This week, the US embassy also said that gangs had fired at two of its armored vehicles, although no one was hurt.

Additionally, a helicopter belonging to the United Nations organization World Food Program (WFP) was struck by gunfire Thursday while it was hovering above Port-auPrince.

All eighteen passengers on board were unharmed in the safe landing.

WFP Haiti Director Waanja Kaaria stated during a press conference on October 25, 2024, “Uncertainty in Haiti continues while the ramping violence of armed groups and food insecurity continues to plant Haiti into a spiral crisis that requires urgent attention.”

2023/24 Concacaf Player of the Year Haiti’s Melchie Dumornay

Miami, FL – Concacaf has announced that Melchie Dumornay (Haiti) and Adalberto Carrasquilla (Panama) have been named 2023/24 Concacaf Women’s and Men’s Players of the Year, respectively.

Concacaf ’s official player awards program saw Melchie and Adalberto selected based on a football-first voting system, which included the participation of coaches and players from Concacaf Member Associations, as well as media members from our region and fans.

The 2023/24 season nominees included a list of six players in each category, all selected based on performance statistics and the input of football experts. More details on the nominees and voting process are available here.

Concacaf President Victor Montagliani on Melchie Dumornay winning the Concacaf Women’s Player of the Year Award for 2023/24: “On behalf of Concacaf, I congratulate Melchie as a very worthy winner of this award. Olympique Lyonnais Féminin midfielder Dumornay is the first Haitian to win Concacaf Women’s Player of the Year honors and the second Caribbean player (Jamaica and Manchester City player Khadija Shaw winning the accolade last year). The 21-year-old has been a rising star in the region due to her stellar performances for club and country.

Haiti and Dumornay began their 2023/24 season by competing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Dumornay played in all three Group Stage matches, competing against England, China, and Denmark.
