Cocaine, cannabis and opioids are getting easier to buy as criminal networks and armed groups capitalise on the fragile Sahel region’s “natural stopover point” to Europe on trafficking routes from South America, but authorities with help from the UN are taking down criminal networks and making a record number of seizures of illicit drugs.

In this feature, part of a series exploring trafficking in the Sahel, UN News focuses on the illicit drug trade.

According to a new report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), drug trafficking in the Sahel continues to hinder security, economic development and the rule of law while jeopardizing public health.

“Drug trafficking is well-established in the Sahel region –with detrimental consequences both locally and globally,” said Amado Philip de Andres, who heads the agency’s West and Central Africa regional office.

“Increased drug flows to West Africa and the Sahel undermine peace and stability in the region,” he said. “This is not only a security issue as armed groups are deriving revenue to finance their operations, it is also a public health issue as criminal groups tap into population growth to expand illicit drug markets.”

Women in Madagascar too ashamed to seek help giving birth

Some of the poorest women in an underdeveloped region south of Madagascar are “too ashamed” to seek the maternal health services they need, according to a midwife working in a health centre supported by United Nations agencies, but that may be about to change.

The predominantly rural region of Androy has been beset by a series of humanitarian crises which have affected the most vulnerable people there, including mothers-to-be, however the delivery of simple, inexpensive maternity kits is encouraging more women to access a range of services that will help keep them and their babies healthy.

Ahead of the International Day of the Midwife, celebrated annually on 5 May, Jeanne Bernadine Rasoanirina, a midwife in Behara, in Androy, spoke to UN News’s Daniel Dickinson about the challenges of reaching the poorest women.

“This is a very poor rural area, and many women are too ashamed to come to the health centre to have their babies delivered because they don’t even have the money for transport or to buy clean cloth in which to wrap their newborn. They don’t want other people to know they are poor.

The mothers-to-be who come here get all the support they need to give birth, and it’s free of charge, thanks to the government as well as UN agencies, including [the UN reproductive health agency] UNFPA.[The UN Children’s Fund] UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP) provide important nutrition advice and support, which complements our work and is essential to keeping mothers and their children healthy.

Trinidad and Tobago is described as one of the “frontline States”, those nations that are most severely affected by the impact of the climate emergency, and youth activists are among the most prominent voices in the country calling for stronger action to combat the crisis, both at home and abroad.

Small island developing States are particularly vulnerable to climate change consequences, such as rising sea levels and heavy rains that cause flooding, increasing ocean temperatures that affect coral reefs and fishing and frequent hurricanes destroying homes and livelihoods. These countries often suffer from fragile economic conditions and don’t have the means to help their citizens to cope with these problems.

In the face of such uncertain conditions, many young people are deciding that they want and need urgent changes to ensure that they have a world worth living in. Around the world, they are leading strikes, protests and demonstrations and gaining the skills needed to find solutions.

At a coffee shop in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, UN News met some of the country’s leading young voices on the environment to find out what Trinidadians think about the climate emergency and how to address it.

Uncertainty in Gaza amplified by closure of key border crossings

Amid ongoing uncertainty about a ceasefire in Gaza and an escalation of the military operation in Rafah, UN aid agencies expressed deep concerns on Tuesday that the two main access points into the enclave remained closed, while families are scared and “hanging on psychogically and physically by a thread”.

The warning relating to Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings followed an urgent appeal from UN Secretary-General António Guterres late Monday to both sides “to go the extra mile” and make an agreement to end seven months of devastating conflict, his Spokesperson said in a statement.

In Geneva, Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN aid coordination office, OCHA, told journalists that permission had not been granted by the Israeli authorities to reach the Rafah crossing.

“We currently do not have any physical presence at the Rafah crossing as our access to go to that area for coordination purposes has been denied by COGAT,” he said, in reference to the Israeli government organization overseeing relief deliveries in Gaza. “So that means that currently the two main arteries for getting aid into Gaza have been choked off.”

Mr. Laerke further warned that existing humanitarian stocks in Gaza could be expected to last no more than about a day. He also noted that Rafah is the only entry point for fuel...

US – Approved $60M in Military Assistance to Haiti

According to papers acquired by, the Biden administration approved a $60 million military aid plan to help Haiti combat vicious gangs wreaking devastation in the nation.

The second aid package that the United States has authorized for the Haiti issue this year consists primarily of small guns with some armored cars thrown in. At least eighty Humvees, thirty-five MaxxPro infantry transporters, sniper rifles, riot control equipment, guns, ammo, and surveillance drones are included in the notification.

According to the memorandum of authority for the drawdown, the action would transfer arms and equipment to the Haitian National Police as well as other countries contributing to the international security effort to stop the violence in Haiti, including Kenya, Jamaica, and the Bahamas.

Following the approval of a $10 million package earlier this year by the Biden administration, the most recent package increases the total contribution from U.S. stocks to the Haiti situation to $70 million.

At the conclusion of the fiscal year, this authority’s $75 million ceiling will expire. Requests for response from the State, Defense, and National Security Coun-

cil spokespeople were not immediately answered.

The announcement last month that the Biden administration intended to expedite the delivery of $60 million in guns, ammunition, and other equipment to nations that would be deploying to Haiti by using its drawdown power. Given the mounting pressure on the administration to respond, the move is perceived as an apparent attempt to circumvent Republican oversight efforts.

Armed gangs have essentially taken over Haiti after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, murdering thousands of people and uprooting hundreds of thousands of others. Kenya consented to head a U.N. multinational security mission to Haiti because of the contentious past of Western participation in the country.

The U.S.-backed plan, however, has come under heavy fire from detractors who claim it offers information on how it can be successful. The proposal calls for the deployment of thousands of security officers to Haiti to reinforce the country’s police. On May 23, the first Kenyan troops are expected to arrive in Haiti.

Haiti - Prime Minister Nomination Reversed by Transition Council

The majority of Haiti’s transition council, which had previously nominated an interim prime minister earlier in the week, has reversed course, revealing internal discord within the group entrusted with guiding the Caribbean nation through a prolonged crisis.

Late on Wednesday, four out of the council’s seven voting members issued a statement announcing their decision to revert to the original agreement of selecting a prime minister from a pool of applicants, rescinding their previous choice of former official Fritz Belizaire for the position.

Haiti has faced numerous challenges to its political and social stability in recent years, including a presidential assassination and a devastating earthquake, leading to a power vacuum increasingly dominated by armed gangs vying for control.

The level of violence in the country has escalated significantly in recent months, with United Nations data indicating that more than one person is killed in gang-related violence every hour during the first three months of this year.

Despite expectations for a public vote to determine both the prime minister and the head of the council, no such vote took place after the majority bloc within the council unilaterally selected Belizaire as prime minister, with former Senate leader Edgard Leblanc chosen to lead the council.

The four members who reversed their decision on the prime minister nomination identify themselves as the “Indissoluble Majority Bloc,” and as of yesterday afternoon, they had not nominated a potential replacement.

Meanwhile, the Montana Accord group, represented on the council, has proposed a rotating council presidency. Fritz Jean, the group’s representative, stated in a radio interview on Thursday that disagreements persist regarding the council president’s role, with some advocating for it to act as interim president of the nation.

In addition to selecting a prime minister, the council is tasked with forming a cabinet and establishing a provisional electoral authority to pave the way for Haiti’s first elections since 2016. A vote for a new president is anticipated by early 2026.

T&T – Palestine Wants Declaration as State and Help in Gaza From Country

On April 23, 2024, a Palestinian ambassador traveling with a UN delegation requested that Trinidad and Tobago assist in putting a stop to Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip and acknowledge Palestine as a state.

At a meeting with diplomats from three supportive countries at the UN headquarters in Port of Spain, Palestine’s permanent observer to the UN, Riyad Mansour, made this request. He is a member of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, which was established in 1975 to support the rights of the Palestinian people and a diplomatic settlement to the Palestine issue.

A recent news report said that on October 7, hundreds of Hamas fighters invaded Israeli villages, murdering 1,200 people and taking 250 others captive in Gaza amid alleged sexual assaults. Israel’s assault on Gaza since then has resulted in 33,000 deaths and the

US –

destruction of many structures. In 1948, Israel was established as a state on territory where Jews had ancient ties. However, during the Al Nakba, or disaster, hundreds of thousands of Arab residents were driven from the area, and their place was taken by an influx of Jews who were escaping persecution in Europe, especially under Nazism.

Dr. Amery Browne, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, was reportedly met by Mansour.

“We were received in a very warm and perceptive way by the Honourable Foreign Minister Browne.”

According to him, the group requested that Trinidad and Tobago acknowledge Palestine as a state.

“He said, ‘Our doors are open.’

“We welcome that, we appreciate that, and we want to continue the dialogue and discussion to see an implementation of what we hope would be the promising recogni

tion of the State of Palestine soon, the best investment in peace and saving the two-State solution.”

According to Mansour, visas for holders of Palestinian passports were also covered by the mission.

“We have 141 countries that recognize us.

It should not be difficult for Palestinians to receive visas, to be allowed to come to this country for business, for education, for whatever.”

He stated that Palestinians need to be granted easy access to Trinidad and Tobago, instead of an immigration officer failing to recognize Palestine on his list of recognized nations.

Remarking that just four or five of the thirty-three regional nations had not yet recognized Palestine, he expressed his desire for positive ties with T&T and the area. According to the ambassador, Palestinians have always endured horror and misery, but this is especially true in Gaza.

Claiming that Israel had driven Palestinians out of Gaza’s north, center, and south, and next to “God knows where” or perhaps the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, Mansour stated, “We don’t need another Nakba.”

Restricts Export of Firearms to Many Countries Including the Caribbean

To reduce the number of US-made civilian firearms being used in crimes overseas, the Biden administration proposed additional limitations on weapon imports.

Under the new rules, specialists will now have to screen their clients and restrict sales to 36 nations that are “high-risk” for the illegal diversion of semi-automatic weapons more thoroughly. Among these 36 nations, Trinidad and Tobago will be impacted.

Bangladesh, Belize, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mali, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Tajikistan, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Vietnam, and Yemen are the nations listed by the Commerce Department.

Secretary of Commerce for the US Gina Raimondo announced the new initiative, saying, “The days of exporting military-style weapons to civilians in unstable countries are over.”

“Under our new review process, it will be much

harder to export these weapons to civilians in countries that pose national security risks.”

The agency put a stop to most US-based weapons specialists in October 2023. The agency said on April 26 that the halt will end on May 30, the day the new limitations go into force.

The US State Department has assessed that 36 nations are at a high risk of misuse or diversions, thus the new interim final rule places limits on exports to non-governmental uses in those countries. The division will utilize a “presumption of denial for commercial transactions” in those countries.

The Commerce Department projects that the 36-country limitations will cut US firearm exports by approximately 7%, or $40 million, out of the $600 million average yearly shipments. According to the Commerce government, the government would cancel certain export licenses and shorten some of them from four years to one year.

The export prohibition may have an impact on foreign clients, including dealers, as well as US gun manufacturers such as Sturm Ruger and Co., Smith & Wesson, and Vista Outdoor, according to a recent news story dated October 27. Exporters must specify the precise end users for shipments to government clients.

An official interagency working group to assess the risks of weapon diversion and misuse on a country-by-country basis would be chaired by the US Department of State, according to a document on the policy dated April 8. Along with the new regulation, the Commerce Department said on April 26 that its Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) will revoke permits that are now in effect and permit the export of weapons to non-government end users in the locations specified by the State Department on July 1. Additionally, the agency announced that it will take public feedback on the regulation until July 1.

GACC Issues Statement Over Call For Boycott of Guyanese Businesses in NY by CGID

Amidst increasing condemnation against the recent antics of the Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID), which attracted backlash after threatening to boycott any Guyanese business in New York that is guilty of recently welcoming President Dr. Irfaan Ali on its premises, in a statement on Friday, the Florida-based Guyanese American Chamber of Commerce (GACC) joined the controversy and expressed “grave concern” over the boycott calls on Guyanese-owned businesses in Brooklyn, NY which hosted President Ali.

According to GACC, the rationale behind the boycott threats is a baseless one.

GACC Statement

NEW YORK – Micro and small businesses are the backbone of a nation’s economy. These enterprises are significant job creators often providing employment opportunities to individuals who might otherwise struggle to find work including women and young people. Many large companies today began as small startups. While individual micro and small businesses may have modest revenues, collectively they make a significant contribution to the communities in which they are located and to a country particularly through equitable distribution of incomes.

It is against this backdrop that the Guyanese American Chamber of Commerce (GACC) notes with grave concern calls for the boycott of some Guyanese owned businesses

in Brooklyn, New York for having the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, His Excellency Irfaan Ali visit their business establishments recently. A call to boycott small businesses for baseless partisan political, ethnic, religious or any other reason is downright outrageous and the GACC urges the people of Brooklyn, New York to ignore these calls. Guyanese owned businesses, especially those in the restaurant and related hospitality sectors in the Diaspora contribute to the cultural fabric by preserving and promoting Guyanese traditions and customs and foster social connections and community cohesion, serving as gathering places and hubs for social interaction. The GACC condemns any effort undertaken to deny the Guyanese owned businesses in New York this critical role.

The GACC is of the firm belief that a boycott of small businesses merely for welcoming into their establishments elected officials, let alone a visiting Head-of-State from the country from which the owners of these businesses hail, and who clearly, as in this case, identify as Guyanese and/or Caribbean owned specializing in Guyanese/ Caribbean fare, is unfair and unjust. Those perpetuating calls for a boycott, while they may not have the capacity or influence to make such a boycott successful, ought to demonstrate a better sense of responsibility by taking into account the potential negative impact such calls can have on the business enterprises, their employees, and the community.

Welcoming an elected official on a walkabout of a community into a business enterprise is standard in all democracies whether an enterprise supports that elected official or not.

The GACC wishes to reiterate its condemnation of this attempt to unjustly punish the Guyanese business owners in Brooklyn who displayed decency, good manners, and the traditional warm Guyanese hospitality by welcoming President Ali to their establishments.

The GACC encourages all Caribbean owned businesses to stand in solidarity with those that are subject to these calls for a boycott. Here in the Diaspora, it is through our collective Caribbean strength and unity that we are best able to effectively protect and promote our interest.

On another note, the GACC has been following

the news of the recent developments concerning vendors on the seawall between Camp Street and the roundabout at Kitty. While not seized of all the facts pertaining to these developments the GACC urges the Government authorities to act with fairness and compassion and to bear in mind the devastating impact any rash and inconsiderate action would have on these micro and small businesses and their owners.

We urge that every effort be made to avoid confrontation and any approach to this issue which may be perceived as discriminatory.

US – 100,000 Migrants Expected To Enroll Next Year in Obamacare

The Biden administration issued a decree on May 3, 2024, requiring around 100,000 immigrants who were admitted to the US as children to enroll in the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance program the following year.

The decision took longer to finalize than anticipated, and Democratic President Joe Biden’s original suggestion to let those migrants enroll in Medicaid the health insurance

program that offers the poorest citizens of the country almost free coverage was not met.

However, the Affordable Care Act’s marketplace enrollment opening on November 1, just days before the presidential election, would enable thousands of people, dubbed “Dreamers,” to take advantage of tax advantages when they enroll for coverage.

In a recent remark, Biden noted, “I’m proud of the contributions of Dreamers to our country and committed to providing Dreamers the support they need to succeed.”

Although the president’s border and immigration policies have drawn criticism from conservatives, Biden may have been able to increase his appeal to Latino voters at a pivotal juncture to win the election.

It is now possible for anybody registered in the Obamaera Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, to enter the market. Many of these individuals are Latino.

The head of the country’s health department, Xavier Becerra, stated that many of those migrants had put off receiving care because they did not have insurance.

On a call, Becerra informed reporters, “They incur higher costs and debts when they do finally receive care.”

“Making Dreamers eligible to enroll in coverage will improve their health and well-being and strengthen the health and well-being of our nation and our economy.”

The measure taken by the government modifies the meaning of “lawfully present” to allow DACA recipients to enroll in the marketplace exchange lawfully.

The DACA program was started by then-President Barack Obama to protect immigrants who were brought into the country illegally as minors from deportation and to enable them to work lawfully there.

However, because they did not fit the criteria for having a qualifying disability, the “Dreamers” remained ineligible for government-subsidized health insurance plans “lawful presence” in the US.

Black Migrants Face Scarcity and Inequity says Study

In a 2024 Asylum Survey Report titled “Leaving Behind the Newest New Yorkers” released on Thursday by three immigrant rights and community-based organizations shed light on the disparities faced by Black migrants compared to their Latin American counterparts in New York City. According to the report jointly authored by Make the Road New York, Hester St., and Afrikana, Black migrants are disproportionately affected by eviction notices, food insecurity, lack of warm clothing, and employment barriers.

The findings, based on a survey of 586 migrants conducted in February, revealed stark contrasts in the experiences of Black migrants and Latin American migrants. While 85% of Black migrants reported lacking job training, only 52% of Latin American migrants faced the same challenge. Additionally, a mere 7% of Black migrants had applied for federal work authorization, contrasting sharply with the 32% of other migrants who had done so.

The report emphasized the urgent need for policymakers’ attention to address these inequities. Natalia Aristizabal, the deputy director of Make the Road New York,

emphasized the importance of humanizing the experiences of Black migrants, stating, “Unfortunately the narrative around this population has not been a good one, so we want to be able to humanize people’s story and the experiences that they are going through at this time.”

Responding to the report, Kayla Mamelak, a spokesperson for Mayor Eric Adams, highlighted the city’s efforts in managing the national humanitarian crisis of migrant arrivals. However, she acknowledged the need for a national solution to address the scale of the challenge.

The report revealed shifts in the demographic composition of migrants arriving in New York City. While Venezuelans continued to represent the largest share of migrants, there was a notable increase in the proportion of Guineans and Ecuadorians among respondents.

Black migrants, primarily from West African nations, faced particular challenges upon arriving in the city, including language barriers and limited access to interpreters. The report underscored the struggles of Black single adults, with 93% receiving eviction notices compared to

66% of single adults from Latin America. Furthermore, disparities in access to basic necessities were evident, with fewer Black migrants reporting receiving three full meals a day and having access to warm clothing compared to their Latin American counterparts.

Critics, including David Giffen from the Coalition for the Homeless, condemned

the city’s response to the humanitarian crisis, calling for meaningful action and support from the federal government.

As the city grapples with the influx of migrants, there is a pressing need for investment in legal representation and English language education to support migrants in navigating their challenges and accessing opportunities for stability and integration.

NYC – Court Allows School Segregation Case to Advance

A lawsuit alleging that New York City perpetuates racial segregation within its public school system, particularly in prestigious institutions like Stuyvesant and Bronx Science, is advancing following a panel of state appellate judges’ decision on Thursday.

The lawsuit, brought by a group advocating for racial integration in New York schools, contends that city and state policies disproportionately favor White and Asian-American students in admissions to gifted-and-talented programs. These programs, which serve as a gateway to elite schools such as the Bronx High School of Science and Stuyvesant High School, are accessed through a rigorous process involving tests and interviews starting as early as kindergarten.

According to the lawsuit, these policies result in a denial of a “sound basic education” for Black and Latino students. The gifted-and-talented program has become a focal point in the city’s efforts to address inequality, as admission to these programs can significantly impact a student’s academic trajectory.

While admission to specialized high schools is determined by a single exam, participation in the gifted-and-talented program provides students with an advantage due to their “superior academic preparation,” as stated in the complaint.

The lawsuit alleges that the city and state

have knowingly perpetuated testing-based sorting that systematically excludes students of color from equal educational opportunities. Data from the city’s Independent Budget Office shows significant disparities in the representation of White, Asian-American, Hispanic, and Black children in the gifted kindergarten program.

In response to the defendants’ argument that judicial remedies would require overreach, the state Supreme Court’s Appellate Division rejected this notion, stating that blaming each other does not absolve them of responsibility for ensuring a sound basic education.

Plaintiffs in the case, including IntegrateNYC Inc., parent groups, and current and former public school students, are seeking the elimination of admission screens for gifted and talented programs, as well as reforms to improve recruitment and retention of school staff.

While the ruling allows some claims to proceed against the state, the New York State Education Department remains confident that the claims will ultimately be dismissed. Nonetheless, the decision marks a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to address racial inequality within New York City’s public school system.

Celebrating Mothers - The Indispensable Person

As the ancient Greek philosopher Plato said “give me a different set of mothers and I will give you a different world” - for us in the black community it is mothers who provide the backbone of that community and we need to, on Mother’s Day, celebrate our mothers with gratitude and appreciation, for gratitude and appreciation is the mother’s strength of resilience determination and in many instances sacrifices that have brought the black community and black advancement to a large extent to where we are today. It is navigating the complex and in today’s difficult world that we’ve come to appreciate the work of mothers as they try to shape, guide, protect and even nurture the growing person, quite literally raising a child into a person of consequence, to understand and to take his or her rightful place in the world; raising a child today is no picnicwe find that most black mothers are doing at a minimum two jobs, one at work and

one back at home, and in many instances more than two jobs, and so they’re juggling the role of a breadwinner with the role of a nurturer and undertaking in that role one of the biggest responsibilities any human being can take on; so as we celebrate Mother’s Day we must come to the understanding that almost every day we should be thankful for mothers who have raised us, loved us, encouraged us through many a difficult situation and produced us as performing human beings; without a mother’s love each of us would be a lesser person so we must take the time to thank her and to let her know how much we appreciate her, her love, her sacrifice and her support, and if your mom is no longer with us still pay tribute to her and find some way to pay tribute to a mom or to someone who treated you as a mother or to some mother, that you admire her and what she’s doing in the life of some child or children; it can simply be an act of

kindness, making a contribution also to a community activity, community activity networks in the best interests of the community and for those mothers that are with us, they will tell you that a child literally changes their way of life. Becoming a parent is a life altering experience and it requires all the effort and all the attention that is needed to work in the best interest of that child; it’s impossible to pay back mothers fully for all that they have done for us but we can show love and appreciation as we celebrate mothers. For mothers in the black community we all can work to make black maternal health crisis a priority; black women disproportionately carry the burden of maternal mortality which is oftentimes three to four times greater than that of white mothers. This is a significant problem in our society and in the United States and it is a problem that we all should be working on to rid the system of the racism and inequality that has plagued

black women and indeed black mothers. The role of mothers in this society is growing more and more important as society looks for ways that will guide us through some complex and troubling times and we need to have the strength of a mother to guide our thinking and our commitment and our direction. We need to particularly celebrate mothers and look to them more and more with their steadfastness and resilience as we face the many issues of today’s world, but let us take the time out to wish mothers and not just only wish them but show the appreciation in a substantive way to Mothers on this Mother’s Day by some form or fashion even if it’s just giving her flowers.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Taking Away the Power of Pollution From an Elite Few

The big corporations, utilities, and Wall Street millionaires who profit off fossil-fueled power plants have had us in a chokehold for years. Now, the grip is finally loosening.

For too long, a small few have dictated where we get our power from, how much we pay on our energy bills, and even what is in the air we breathe. They have done this with little regulation or consequence. Their pollution fuels the climate crisis, driving the extreme storms and out-ofcontrol floods and droughts that devastate communities and economies. If you are unlucky enough to be in a fence line community near a coal or gas plant, you know the human toll firsthand. The rates of asthma, heart disease, and cancer are higher because of the toxic pollution these plants dump into your air and water. This is the price we pay because these corporate polluters have put their bottom line above our well-being.

The tragic legacy of coal and gas power plant pollution is finally being broken. It is thanks to historic and decisive action from the Biden administration with a suite of four rules just finalized by the Environmental Protection Agency. Though the rules sound basic in their nature, they are game changers.

First, President Joe Biden just implemented important restrictions on wastewater from coal plants—one of the largest sources of toxic pollution in our waterways. Second, he closed loopholes so that coal plant operators can’t dump toxic coal ash wherever and whenever they want without any safeguards. Third, he strengthened protections that curb pollution like heavy metals, mercury, and other hazardous air toxics from being emitted without limits from power plants, safeguarding some of the most vulnerable individuals from some of the most dangerous types of air pollution. Finally, for the first time ever, the president is implementing carbon pollution standards for existing coal-fired power plants and new gas-fired power plants—two of the most significant sources of the pollution that fuels the climate crisis.

This is a clear sign that the Biden administration is listening to overwhelming public demand to ensure every person, regardless of where they live, has access to clean air, safe water, and a stable climate. It is a sea change in defining who is prioritized in decisions about pollution in our air and water. Now, the needs of those who feel the impact of pollution are finally being put before corporate polluters and the

politicians who’ve stood idly by. The Biden administration’s actions are critical to reducing harmful pollution and holding corporate polluters accountable. And they move us closer to transitioning to a 100 percent clean energy economy—the essential next step to prevent the worst damage of the climate crisis. At a time when clean, renewable energy is more affordable than gas and coal all over the country, these safeguards will further incentivize a transition to these energy sources. That will save lives, lower costs, and create new jobs. It is an investment that all at once helps the economy, protects public health, and drives innovation.

Dirty fossil fuels that threaten communities with dangerous pollution are on their way out. The public, the government, and even some utility companies agree that our future will be built on reliable, affordable, and clean power. The time has come to change a status quo that has resulted in a public health disaster, a worsened climate crisis, and a small group of wealthy interests gaining too much influence over our future.

As with all change, this latest action did happen on its own. We made it happen. While many politicians were quiet for years, the public was not. People across the

Biden Hails 175,000 New Jobs, Urges Continued Economic Resilience

In April, employers in the United States added 175,000 jobs, signaling a slower but steady pace of labor market growth.

According to the latest Labor Department report, this is the 27th consecutive month the unemployment rate has remained below 4 percent.

The slight uptick in the unemployment rate to 3.9 percent contrasts with previous periods of low unemployment. Notably, the rate has been sustained at historically low levels, comparable to those recorded during low-unemployment periods between 1967 and 1970 and 1951 and 1953. Following a robust start to the year, April’s job growth represents a cooldown, with the smallest increase in half a year.

Average hourly wage growth also moderated to $34.75, up 3.9 percent from the previous year. Despite this, wages have consistently outpaced inflation since May of the prior year, marking a significant shift after years of lagging behind.

“The great American comeback continues,” stated President Joe Biden in response to the data while emphasizing the

creation of over 15 million jobs since he took office. “When I took office, I inherited an economy on the brink, with the worst economic crisis in a century,” he continued. “Now we are seeing that plan in action, with well over 15 million jobs created since I took office, working-age women employed at a record high rate, wages rising faster than prices, and unemployment below 4 percent for a record 27 months in a row.”

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries echoed Biden’s sentiments and highlighted the positive trends in the job market.

“The April Jobs Report showed another month of consistent job creation by the Biden-Harris administration,” Jeffries stated. “Wages are up, unemployment remains near historic lows, and the American economy is continuing to grow at a steady pace.”

Both leaders acknowledged the ongoing work required to ensure widespread economic prosperity, contrasting their approach with that of congressional Republicans. “While House Democrats are

working to build on this economic progress, House Republicans are continuing to push Donald Trump’s extreme MAGA agenda to benefit the wealthy, well-off, and well-connected,” Jeffries asserted. The healthcare and social assistance sectors saw the most substantial job growth, reflecting ongoing demand for services in the post-pandemic economy. Health care added 56,000 jobs, with notable gains in ambulatory health services, hospitals, and nursing and residential care facilities. Social assistance, including social work and counseling, also experienced an increase of 23,000 jobs.

Meanwhile, the warehousing, transportation, and retail sectors showed signs of rebounding after the slowdowns experienced during the pandemic. Warehousing and transportation added 22,000 jobs, while retail saw an increase of 20,000, particularly in general merchandise and building material, garden equipment, and supplies dealers.

Construction added 9,000 new jobs, indicating a slower but still noteworthy

country built a movement that has pushed back against fossil fuel pollution and corporate polluter influence from every conceivable angle. In the courts, in Congress, in state houses, on utility commissions, and, yes, in the streets, that movement worked tirelessly to protect the health of our families. They fought for our clean air and water, and our collective future free from pollution and the climate crisis. These new safeguards are the culmination of decades of advocacy that has never been in the spotlight but has always moved us closer to this day.

pace compared to previous years despite sensitivity to interest rate hikes.

Economists attribute the prolonged period of low unemployment to various factors, including demographic shifts and federal stimulus measures. However, uncertainties persist due to the Federal Reserve’s decision to maintain interest rates amid concerns about inflation, which could impact future economic conditions.

Biden said the April job report provides insight into the “resilience of the American economy.”

Florida – Jamaican Man

Died in Domestic Dispute

On April 26, 2024, in Coral Springs, Florida, a man who was originally from Kingston, Jamaica was shot and killed after what appeared to be a domestic argument.

Stephen G. Austin, a 48-year-old BMW sales and leasing expert, has been identified as the man in question.

According to reports, Austin’s wife and daughter got into a fight at his apartment building in Windsor

Coral Springs. There are claims that Austin broke up the fight that turned into a physical altercation between the dead man and his stepson.

Although the stepson is said to have shot Austin to death, Florida authorities have not formally verified this.

Investigators report that a man has been assisting the authorities with information related to the incident.

T&T – Top Cop Warns On Wearing of Jewelry

ASP Ramesh Soodeen, the head of Port-of-Spain Division Area East, is cautioning the public to exercise caution in several areas of the capital city.

He revealed to a local T&T publication, Guardian Media, that thieves have been using social media to entice victims to the nation’s capital so they may loot them. He continued by saying that there were now four robberies occurring in the

district every day, with an increase in jewelry snatchings.

According to the ASP, Facebook Marketplace is being used to lure individuals to sites in East Port-ofSpain to buy things like cell phones and cars.

The latest incident came over the weekend when a guy went to Picadilly Street to sell a cell phone and was shot in the face.

Kenyan Forces Ready to Go Into Haiti

Three persons with knowledge of the negotiations informed NatSec Daily that Kenya is anticipated to start sending troops to Haiti in late May and that a base built by the United States will not be prepared for them.

The U.S. believes that some of the Kenyan forces that were guaranteed to help secure the troubled nation and put an end to violent gangs will begin deploying by May 23, according to Jake Johnston, an analyst at the Center for Economic and Policy Research who frequently speaks with lawmakers and government officials.

This is because Haiti now has a transitional government in place. Two more individuals who want to remain anonymous to talk about private conversations verified the deployment date. That would fall on the same day when President William Ruto of Kenya visits

Washington. The deployment would probably be hailed as a significant victory for the two countries’ relationship: Since the U.S.-backed plan provides no information on how the security forces would prevail in their fight, the operation has been put on hold for months owing to legal disputes

Buju Banton Returns to US, First Time Since Prison Sentence

Grammy Award-winning reggae and dancehall artist Buju Banton has been granted a visa to enter the United States of America, marking a significant development in his career.

Banton’s return to the United States comes after his deportation to Jamaica on December 7, 2018, following his release on drug convictions from the McRae Correctional Institute in Telfair County, Georgia, USA. There had been speculation surrounding his potential return to the US ever since.

The music industry was taken by surprise on Thursday afternoon when DJ Khaled went live from Miami, with Buju Banton

sitting beside him, sharing laughter and camaraderie. Singer Gramps Morgan, who received a shout-out from Buju and Khaled during the live session, expressed his joy and excitement at the news.

“I am thrilled to share this news with the world,” Gramps said. “God is great, and Buju Banton is back in the United States. I eagerly anticipate the plans he has in store. The Voice of Jamaica is poised to spread abundant healing and messages of positivity worldwide. May God protect him and bless every soul touched by his music. Let’s unite in healing the world. Beres Hammond On Times Square Billboard

The nation loved Beres Hammond have called the song “a real classic,” although it hasn’t been performed much since it was published thirty-six years ago by a young soul who never lost his energy.

Now, in the greatest possible version of the narrative, it is being recounted. Due to the same tune that he “reimagined” and released into the Harmony House/VP Records labels, with distribution handled by VP, Hammond was unquestionably the hit of the music scene on May 2, 2024.

Once Spotify, the massive streaming service, heard it, they thought a big promotion was only fitting and changed the title to Let Me Help You. Fans got the pleasure of viewing a grinning Beres up in the limelight as the song was chosen to be put strategically on billboards in Toronto’s famous Yonge-Dundas Square and Times Square in New York. Remarkably, Spotify saves this kind of hype for album launches.

“But they respect Beres so much they gave it to him for this single because they know he’s excited for this release,” a manager from Hammond revealed.

This is how it works: Spotify offers a playlist labeled “New Music Friday,” which is simply an updated weekly playlist that features the newest releases for that week. There is a New Music

Friday playlist for every major market where Spotify is available. In addition to curating this playlist, Spotify screens every new release in the key markets before hand-selecting the songs to include on billboards.

The lovers’ rock virtuoso, who received an honorary degree from The University of the West Indies in November, is really grateful for the attention that Let Me Help You is getting, particularly considering that it was widely believed that the song didn’t get the credit it deserved when it was first released in 1988.

“What nuh dead nuh dash it way … so it go fi true,” He said, quoting a proverb from Jamaica. Since Hammond wrote, produced, and orchestrated the original song, it is regarded as “a rarity” for him to revisit one of his own compositions from his back catalog. He clarified, though, that the choice wasn’t entirely his own.

“My team thought that I should re-release the song because they found it interesting. I couldn’t find the master, so I decided that, if they really wanted it so badly, then I would redo it. We put on some horns … called in Mr. Fraser [Dean], and used all new musicians.

And, from my perspective, it was wonderful. Everybody played their roles wonderfully and I enjoyed the sessions immensely,” Hammond told the local newspaper.

If fan feedback serves as a gauge, then this remix will undoubtedly be well received by them. The original version was uploaded on YouTube two years ago, and some of the comments are rather educational. One admirer even shared a whole narrative.

A fan wrote, “First heard on local radio 25 years ago. For years, I pulled up the DJ/presenter to find the song title, but he couldn’t remember due to it being played on CD with no title, and before the advent of YouTube and so forth … It was years after first hearing this song he eventually found out the title and I acquired the vinyl on 7’” and 12’”.

With the yearly Love and Harmony Cruise just concluded, Hammond is prepared to go on the road once more, this time as part of the July and August Forever Giving Thanks tour, where he will be playing hits from his vast discography.

“I am looking forward to going on the road. Yeah man! Remember seh is my farmwork this, enuh. I will be doing two shows in Canada and

the rest will be in the US,” the reggae sensation shared.

The 27th Edition of the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival will take place in Boonville, California from June 21–23. Additionally, on July 20, Hammond will headline Reggae Sumfest.

There will shortly be more dates released.

The hitmaker, who considers the studio to be

either his first or second home, is also quite busy at work.

“I am seriously hoping to have a little project out for the summer. I am working to have it released in July or so … the fans are looking forward to it and so am I,” he stated.

Caricom Alert to Threat to Cricket T20 World Cup

Caricom is on alert, according to Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley of Trinidad, and security services are battling any terrorist danger that may have an impact on the 2024 International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup.

The event is slated to happen in 2024, from June 1–29.  The prime minister was recently called for a response by a local publication.

In addition to leading the Caricom Prime Ministerial SubCommittee on Cricket, Rowley is the head of the National Security Council of Trinidad and Tobago.

In response, the prime minister said: “Unfortunately, the threat of terrorism in its many and varied expressions is an ever-present danger in the world of the 21st century. It is against this backdrop that all nations, like our region when hosting large or vulnerable gatherings, make an extra effort in national security preparations and response readiness to take seriously, all threats, expressed or implied.”

“Given the fact that bad actors can choose to misbehave in any way possible, it makes it virtually impossible to completely seal off all opportunities.”

The Prime Minister told reporters: “However, in order to ameliorate these dangers, we at the local and regional levels have remained alert to many threats and singularly or together have our intelligence and other security agencies working to protect the population in countries and at venues throughout the tournament.”

According to a story published by Stabroek News on May 3, the regional governments of CARICOM have been notified by the

organization for crime and security about a potential danger posed by the Islamic State to the men’s T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in June in Guyana, other Caribbean countries, and the United States.

According to a message from the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS), the Pro-Islamic State (Daesh) media group “Nashir Pakistan” had demanded assaults on the competition through a banner on its RocketChat and Telegram channels, along with a warning about a chapter from the Quran, “people indulging in amusement would ultimately face the day of reckoning”.

The message that follows in Urdu “This is not a game but rather a blood deal” was included as well.

Prior to and throughout the tournament, member states and partners were urged to keep providing CARICOM IMPACS with information and intelligence on possible threats and questionable activity.

It stated that to lessen the threat of terrorism and guarantee a safe and secure Caribbean area, heightened awareness and extra security measures are essential.

To provide a secure and entertaining atmosphere for both competitors and spectators, IMPACS recommended that strict security protocols be put in place and upheld before, during, and after the tournament:

Co-hosting the World Cup will be the USA, with locations in Florida, New York, and Texas, and the West Indies, with locations in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.
