any who grew up in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY, chose dance as an outlet to escape the streets. There was the hip hop culture and an ever emerging Jamaican dance culture that grew quite popular during the 90s. "Bruk Up", a dance originated by George Adams, became a competitive dance of the times.

Shawn "POBA" Theagene, who is of Hatian, Dominican and Jamaican descent, developed a love for dance at the age of 4, listening to and mimicking the likes of James Brown. He longed to be an entertainer. Over time, he developed his craft, fully embracing his Jamaican culture, by learning and executing popular dancehall styles.

Influenced by Mr. Bruk Up himself, Poba was instrumental in growing the Bruk Up competitive

dance culture in Brooklyn, where he joined his crew at FLEX, to compete against other dance crews. FLEX, held in East New York, Brooklyn, was locally televised, featuring dance crews from across the borough, with both male and famale dancers exhibiting what can be described as rhythmic contortion. At the time, 1994, Ako Griffin from Trinidad, was deemed the best Dancehall artiste in NY, in Poba’s opinion, and he became his mentor and teacher. This also helped him to hone his skills.

His longtime desire to be a performer was at the foundation of his love for Bruk Up dance; it was animated, theatrical and also incorporated some of the hip hop break dance culture. Poba describes it as “breakdancing with a Caribbean Twist.”

They could not beat each other, so decided to join forces for a good cause. Poba shared, “A lot of dancers were killed, arrested or quit dancing and it was important for us to form a movement that would keep the art form alive and give the youth an outlet to learn the craft.”

BSV originated in Brooklyn and has become a worldwide movement, with members in Canada, Australia, Russia and Japan to name a few. BSV has won over 28 awards on a global scale and continues to dominate. Currently, they are edifying the youth of the movement,encouraging selfdevelopment, empowerment and entrepreneurship.

When you mix passion, purpose and raw talent, the result is EMINENCE!

THE RE-EMERGENCE OF SPORTS IN A COVID-19 WORLD

T

he introduction of COVID-19 in our daily lives has made it necessary for us alter our social behaviour, replacing daps, high fives and fist bumps, with elbow touches and air hugs six feet apart.

Multi-billion dollar industries were brought to their knees by a virus that was invisible to human eyes, but whose affects were felt by millions of people. The sports industry was on an indefinite time out, and it was at that point the world learned just how much we took it for granted.

The National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (NHL), Major League Soccer (MLS), and Major League Baseball (MLB) as well as European Soccer Leagues such as the English Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain), Serie A (Italy) and Ligue 1 (France) all suspended activities due to the effect of the virus.

Without sporting activities, a blanket of emptiness hovered over the weekends of many fans and supporters. However, if there is any good to be drawn from our time without sports, it is that we were able to develop a greater appreciation for the contribution of entertainment in our lives.

Sports are often used as a conduit to learn valuable life lessons of perseverance and hard work, as well as an opportunity for families to bond.

Now, sports are finally back, culminating in the Tokyo Olympics, a massive sporting event in scale that has charged not necessarily full speed ahead, but quite close to it, despite the challenges of COVID-19. This not only shows the resiliency of the sector, but it is also symbolic of a desperate return to some semblance of normalcy for people the world over.

Queen of Jab herself, Shireen B., who hails from Grenada “Land of Jab”, has had a deep love and passion for her festive culture since childhood. Shireen drips with oily sex appeal and leaves her audience wanting more gritty goodness!

Shireen describes Soca music as instrumental and electrifying, which brings out a joy that can only be felt; words cannot describe! At the age of 5, her interest in Soca music was piqued and she knew at that tender age that she would evolve into the

successfully sassy entertainer that she is today!

Shireen emerged on the scene in 2019 with her first single release, “Bend Right Ova,” which lead to her first stage performance merely two days after its release! Since her debut hit, she has released four additional bangers, in which she collaborated with the likes of Madman Pantha, K Money, JRE and Problem Child.

Her breakthrough song of 2021, “Viral Jab,” featuring K Money, ripped the airways and created a viral movement, with the creation of a challenge and reposts by major platforms and supporting fans.

Tell us about viral jab; how did it originate? Viral Jab Riddim was

The structure of the song was highly influenced by JRE who is also an artist/producer/song writer from Monsta Entertainment.

He took our vocals and assisted us with constructing the song with the intent to be catchy, commanding and powerful at the same time. I have to give all credits to JRE How did the collaboration with K Money happen? K Money has always been my number one supporter since I decided to do my first song. He has a background in the music industry in the Hip Hop genre and is also very musically diverse. We decided in 2019 to do a song together, but our schedules conflicted. The pandemic,

though unfortunate, presented the opportunity for us to connect and work on Viral Jab, which was released in March 2021.

Tell us about the song’s success. K Money and I have secured bookings across the country and Canada since the song’s release. We have been contacted for multiple interviews and received a number of dub requests. The song is definitely taking us to higher heights.

What is currently in the works? The newest excitement in the industry for me is working with The amazing Problem Child!

He has exposed me to being on a riddim with Wetty Beats, the Michief Riddim, which was released on June 11th 2021. Both

Problem Child and Wetty Beats are known as hit makers in the industry. Problem mentioned wanting to help me advance my musical journey and within a week of our initial conversation, he sent me a demo and we were immediately in the studio!

Container was written by Problem and it was released this past summer! Working with him has helped my growth and I am looking forward to future projects.

You performed at a few shows where Mr. Killa was headlining. Are you thinking of collaborating with Mr. Killa in the future? That will definitely be something I’m interested in.

Who knows maybe one day it will happen. Working with legendary

artists is not something I ask for as I’m very new and I want to remain humble, but I’m not going to let opportunities pass by if the deal is right. What is meant to be will be.

A Shireen B and Mr. Killa collaboration is definitely one I’m here for! The talent and energy of these two musical bodies combined, will be an explosion of fiery and intoxicating goodness!

f you haven’t heard of indie author Crystal Evans, then you haven’t read a scintillating Jamaican novel, with plots and characters reminiscent of our time.

Crystal Evans has taken the book world by storm, the author of twenty two novels, entrepreneur and Caribbean publisher believes her books gives voice to the voiceless.

The author of twenty two published titles say: “I was introduced to watching interviews by bestselling authors by a rookie novelist like myself and after I watched their (celebrity authors) bio-stories, I conceded that their lives very much mirrored mine.

Novelist- A person who creates a fictional world, the voiceless in a world filled with loud, obnoxious and cruel people found comfort and power in prose and words” Crystal Evans speaks a lot about her writing and how much it is like music as she often refers to dancehall and reggae music as poetry. “The music is much like my writing, it’s poetry, it has the same elements and themes of struggle and triumph”.

What makes her books compelling is that her stories are contemporary and played out in the Jamaican setting with the sound of the familiar Jamaican tongue. Her novels have catchy titles such as : Every Man Deserves a Good Jacket, The Bunna Man, Tall Dark and

Miss Evans is also a soloprenuer, , she develops software and distributes resell rights, she is a caribbean (caricom) registered publisher, web developer and business consultant. T

his confessed selftaught historian, social media comedian and father is also a “black man in medicine” working in healthcare, and serving as the force behind the Black Renaissance, an umbrella company including a lifestyle brand and merch line.

Comedy is subjective and its artists create novel ideas and jokes based on their experiences. The comedian says his work comes from many scenarios that actually took place. As a child of Caribbean immigrants, he learned to balance who he was outside of his home, as opposed to the role he played within. In addition, he knew that being a comedian was not “practical” in the eyes of his Caribbean parents. He pursued a career in public health and learned to use comedy as an outlet. It was “a skill [he] honed that [he] did not even know [he] had, through general everyday interactions with family and friends”.

Mel says, “Through comedy I learned more about the history of our culture and how it all intertwined. He also observed the members of his community, the ways they assimilated to American culture and the ways to improve on his own generation’s legacy.

There were certain traditions that he grew up with that are highlighted and played out in his comedic roles. For example, the character Mr. Ainsley is reminiscent of a typical older lascivious Caribbean man, who curses at Alexa and demands Dexta Daps, but the voice assistant calls his wife instead. Mel Vybz

delivers his stories easily, with an accompanying background ding, that prepares his audience for a mind sculpting analysis, and subsequent hilarious punchline.

For Caribbean people, comedy is that bittersweet balm soothing daily life. Carnival is the joyful expression of the vibrant colors and rhythm in our souls. Mel Vybz manages to fuse the two elements in a showcase called Comedy and Carnival, several times a year to highlight the versatility in our combined Caribbean cultures. It is a visceral experience, involving all the senses, as there is also an array of Caribbean dishes

to sample, while one wines one’s waistline, to Calypso, Dancehall and Reggae music, in between various comedic acts performing on stage.

He seeks to draw people in with jokes and have them leave with a shift in consciousness as well; for example, talking about the need for Black economics and building one’s own table when not invited to sit at someone else’s.

When we spoke, Mel mentioned the pandemic at its earliest days

when the only thing left standing was the government and hospitals.

The Black community was severely impacted by Covid-19, not only medically, but also economically.

Many immigrant households lost income earning members, as well as the sources of that income.

Many locations have yet to reopen within the city and state and many people have not yet returned to work. This brought us back to Black Renaissance.

Black Renaissance is Mel Vybz’s lifestyle brand. He initially started it as a women’s clothing line geared to Black women and promoting the Black feminine ideal. Today he pushes the ideal of Black dollars being circulated within the Black community to aid in rebuilding Black economic strength, especially considering the recent medical emergency that is Covid-19. He believes a strong Black wealth base means a change in the balance of power and wealth in America. He calls for an “awakening of Black minds to understand the strength we possess" and purports that "once we take our minds back, the game will change”.

Mel Vybz has managed to reconcile the aspects of his life, incorporating “everything [he] learned culturally and through education”, and they “work together synergistically to help [him] become known on the social media comedy scene”. hether I am happy or feeling down, there is always a song to pick me up. My intention as an artiste is to make music for people to dance, jump, think and wave.” Champeon, whose real name is Ronnel Ramirez, was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago.

enise Belfon has achieved many milestones in her life but this one takes the cake. The iconic “Wining Queen” celebrates 50 years around the sun and shows no signs of stopping or slowing down. With over 30 years of accolades in the music industry, Belfon is one of the hottest artistes in the Caribbean and she is still in high demand. Affectionately known to her fans as "Saucy Wow", for her energetic, scintillating, raunchy performances, she has also earned the titles of Soca Diva and the Queen of Soca. To celebrate this milestone, we decided to take a dive into the world of the Wining Queen and discuss all things Denise Belfon with a little game called “Did You Know?”

As a young girl in school, Denise Belfon was a football (soccer) player and was offered a scholarship to Howard University, to join the all-girls team. That dream was deferred, when Belfon suffered an injury that prevented her from taking advantage of the opportunity.

Belfon has been singing since the age of nine, and was also a dancer and a model. Entertainment has always been in her blood.

When she was not performing and in the spotlight, Belfon taught gymnastics at the Belmont Junior Secondary school and at the YMCA. Belfon is of Saint Lucian and Trinidadian descent, but also has Grenadian, Barbadian, Jamaican, French, and African ancestry.

Now celebrating her 50th birthday, Denise Belfon is overjoyed at the fact that she still has a strong career. An elated Belfon expresses, “I can’t believe it, I’m so blessed. Every time I get to perform, no matter how big or small the stage is, I perform as if it is my last time on stage. The wining don’t stop.” Belfon shared that she took a break from performing for a few years and was a little scared of returning, but the music was calling her. Now she is back and better than ever, under new management, Ace Management Music.

Her single “Iz Ah Queen,” which is a collaboration with international DJ Big Skipp, is blowing up the airwaves, and the track "Real #1 Gyal" on the Boss Ladyzzz riddim, will be featured on The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

You can also find Belfon at The Soca Brunch, every Saturday at Halsey Bar & Grill in Brooklyn, NY. In celebration of her big day, Belfon gave a special performance to her fans and labeled it “The Time Before Now.” The concert featured a timeline of her discography and of course, the Wining Queen delivered. She also released a new single called "Wetti Wetti", that is as saucy as she is.

When asked what motivates her to keep going, Belfon responds “My family and my love for the music keeps me going. I feel like a new artiste because I’m hungry for the stage again, and when it comes to music and performing, I am a specialist!”

here is a resurgence of Soca through the lens of the new generation, and we have witnessed the evolution of the music being offered through bold and exciting melodies. Innovative efforts have reshaped the landscape of the Caribbean music industry, and the genre continues to advance in new and electrifying ways.

Effortlessly positioning herself as a contributor to this progress and a leader in the industry through her eccentrically melodic tunes and magnetism, is Trinidadian singer, song-writer Nailah Blackman.

The Origin - Nailah’s love of music runs deep, as she shared that she has been singing since she was able to

speak! She entered her first calypso competition at age 7 and commenced her professional career at age 11. Her entire family is musically inclined, and normalized music in young Blackman’s upbringing. Several members of the Blackman family are musical trailblazers and have made incredible contributions to Soca and Calypso music. Nailah’s mother, Abbi Blackman, is a renowned Calypso artiste, with many hits under her belt, while her grandfather is legendary Trinidadian singer, Ras Shorty I (or Lord Shorty), the father of Soca himself!

It is safe to say that music and artistry is in her blood, but in this male dominated industry, nothing has been handed to Blackman, who has worked extremely hard for her success.

The Come Up (Crowning the Princess of Soca) - Nailah emerged on the scene in 2016 and

debuted “Workout” in 2017, a duet with international Soca artiste, Kes. “Workout,” which took Blackman to the finals of the 2017 International Soca Monarch competition, is an up-tempo and danceable track, that quickly gained popularity and is still a fan favorite today.

Daring to be different, Blackman, showcasing her electric sound, released another hit in 2017, ""Bailah Mami,"" which was produced by her manager, Anson Pro Soverall. Following her 2017 breakthrough, Nailah released some of her most popular and notable songs in 2018, which included “O’ Lawd Oye”, and her original bad gyal anthem, “Baddish,” which featured international Dancehall artiste, Shenseea.

Nailah’s sound, influenced by the melodies of her childhood, brings together the rhythms of Soca, Calypso and Gospel music, while also infusing elements of Pop, Afro Beats, Reggae and R&B. I refer to it as a “musical gumbo; a mosh pit of goodness.” Boasting a voice so sweat, magical and sultry, Nailah captivates her audience, exhibiting raw and profound talent.

Blackman, deemed “an exciting new voice on the Soca scene,” has blazed many stages, delivering powerful performances and incredible energy to audiences worldwide. Her appeal is also unmasked in her stunning beauty and vibrant flair, owning her sense of style and making waves within the fashion industry. (Fun Fact – Nailah designs and creates many of her outfits) Her international success led to her nomination at the 2018 BET Awards, under the category of “Best New International Act,” which

Despite the effort of her fans, in the Caribbean and worldwide, Nailah was not awarded winner.

However, being recognized for her hard work, being nominated and the experience of being present at the awards, was victory in itself.

Self-assured, unfiltered and not afraid to take chances, Nailah confidently pushes the limits set for women, through her impactful presence that stems from her energy, personality and her organic aura. Nailah’s music led her to prestigious stages such as Olympia in Paris, Soca in Japan – a 4-day Soca festival, and concerts in Switzerland and Amsterdam.

She has performed in countless concerts in the US and the

Caribbean, and she hopes to visit new places post pandemic.

Because of her commitment to greatness and her drive to excel in her career, Nailah received the Cultural Ambassador Award from the New York Senate during New York City’s Labor Day Celebrations in 2018.

In 2019, she was invited to perform with musical legend and Soca icon, Calypso Rose and international artistes, Machel Montano at Coachella, one of the largest and most notable annual music and arts festivals, held in California. The festival highlights popular and well-established artistes, as well as, showcasing emerging artistes and groups. It was an honor for her to share space with two icons, given that Calypso Rose also inspired her musical journey.

Nailah has won “Best New Soca Artiste” at Your View Awards in Jamaica and “Groovy Soca Female of the Year” at the International Soca Awards in St. Lucia. She looks forward to the reinstatement of competitions in the future.

SW: Tell me Chris, why do you think people in the UK embrace dancehall?

CS: Jamaica has played a huge role in the evolution of UK music ever since the arrival of the Windrush generation in the late 1940s. Some of the most popular genres to come out of this country including Two-tone, Jungle, UK Garage, Grime and UK

CS: I am a club DJ, events promoter, and a radio presenter. I present the Dancehall Show on Westside Radio, and also do freelance radio production work for BBC Radio, amongst other things.

SW: How did you get started in the music business? Take me back to the beginning.

CS: My first step into the music business was putting on my own club night, ‘Top Ranking’, at the age of 17 in Cheltenham. I had a big collection of reggae CDs which I’d built over the years from visiting record shops week in, week out, and wanted to put on an event where I could play them to a crowd and showcase my skills as a DJ. SW: What’s one fun fact about Chris Satta?

CS: (Chuckles) I’m not sure if you’d call this fun, but since the age of 14 I’ve had about a hundred different job titles, from security steward, to cleaner, to radio producer, to stage manager… if you were to look at my full CV you would be very confused! @chris_satta

SW: Who are your biggest influencers, if any?

CS: I am not particularly influenced by any one DJ, but I definitely admire DJ Khaled and just how far he has come, from playing the clubs in Miami and being on the radio, to now being on one of the biggest producers in the world. It is inspiring. In terms of UK DJs, I would say Seani B and DJ Young Lion have been influential in my journey as a radio DJ. SW: What do you think about current virtual spaces considering Covid-19? Do you see us staying here?

CS: I think Covid brought out the hustler in a lot of us, and as creatives we definitely had to adjust and find new ways to keep people engaged.

Straight away, I decided I had to make the best of it, and was actually very inspired by the challenge. Most of our followings grew because people were home and tuned in to their devices. So, we benefitted in some sense from the increased exposure on online platforms. There are some virtual spaces I can see sticking around and some that I definitely hope we will see the back of!

IF THIS PANDEMIC HAS TAUGHT US ANYTHING, IT IS THAT ENTERTAINMENT AND RECREATION ARE CRITICAL, BECAUSE OF THEIR POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON MENTAL HEALTH

T

hroughout history, there have been instances where two things fit so perfectly together, you rarely ever hear mention of one without the other. Instantly, we think of iconic duos, such as bun and cheese, rice and peas, and milk and cookies.

Yes, all my examples are of food, but my love for food aside, the point is there are things that naturally fit together, as if they are each other’s missing puzzle pieces.

Music and sports have shared a long and storied history, complementing each other in a way that lingers continuously. Both are forms of expression that offer an escape and allow persons to enter a place where they are free from the stresses of their day to day lives, even for a little while.

If this pandemic has taught us anything, it is that entertainment and recreation are critical, because of their positive influence on mental health. In addition, this connection is easily made, when we consider the huge role music plays in getting athletes in the ‘zone’ before they go out and perform.

We often see athletes in warm-ups and during pre-game activities with headphones on, trying to create the conditions necessary for optimal performance. NBA arenas typically have musical accompaniment during the games, as it adds to the atmosphere, pageantry and

suspense of the activities.

Furthermore, many Basketball players have forayed into the music industry, with the likes of Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant and Damian Lillard, as some of the most notable NBA superstars that have released music.

Sports has also been the inspiration behind many musical hits and timeless ‘quotables’, that hold relevance to this day. Drake is notoriously synonymous with witty sports references, that have become a key part of pop culture.

The hit song "0 to 100" gave us the gem “I been Steph Curry with the shot, Been cookin' with the sauce, Chef Curry with the pot, boy” Hip Hop legend Lil Wayne also has a song titled "Kobe Bryant" and wunderkind Jack Harlow’s single "Tyler Herro", named after the Miami Heat Guard off his debut album, is one of the latest examples of how sports and music intertwine.

The recently concluded Tokyo Olympics brought back memories of Usain Bolt’s ode to Dancehall music when he celebrated his wins at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, with popular dances such as his Nuh linga, Sweep, and Gully Creepa.

In similar fashion to Bolt’s playfulness, the Jamaica Women’s 4x100m relay team, while being introduced to the crowd before the running of the final, were captured doing the Dirt Bounce, a dance popularized by the track of the same name by Dancehall Artiste Laa Lee.

Dancer- turned- Deejay Ding Dong said in an article published in The Jamaica Observer that, “What Usain Bolt had done when he won his first 100 metres when him Nuh Linga and Sweep…when Bolt did that, it shed a different light on dancers in Jamaica. That brought the attention to us, that people started to wonder what that person (Bolt) was doing. He just won a 100 metre and this was his celebration. So, you know people fly down after the Olympics to find out wah gwaan”.

Bolt, wanting to find another niche after retiring from an illustrious athletics career, has chosen to try his hand at music.

Bolt has executive producer credits on a number of musical compositions, one of which is his Olympe Rosé riddim, which featured many heavy hitting Reggae and Dancehall acts such as Ding Dong, Chris Martin, Munga Honourable and Dexta daps. More recently, Bolt has been promoting his new track "It’s a Party", with long time friend and manager, Nugent ‘NJ’ Walker.

The relationship between music and sport is one that is symbiotic by nature, due to sports' heavy influence on popular culture and music being an art form that reflects culture. Its dynamics continue to fill the pages of history, and the love affair produces moments that bring people together in celebration.

VOICEMAIL STILL DEH YAH! VOICEMAIL IS A REGGAE AND DANCEHALL CULTURAL PHENOMENON HAILING FROM THE ISLAND OF JAMAICA. S

t

he group came to recognition in the early 2000s, and was largely synonymous with dance songs, like “Weh Di Time” and “Wacky Dip”, featuring deceased renowned dancer Bogle.

They further proved their claim to fame when they branched out in 2008, and went in another direction, releasing a new album devoid of dance tunes. This move solidified the group’s place as a contentious worldwide act. Fast forward to 2021, Voicemail continues to prevail as a musical sensation and their natural melding of bars accounts for several contemporary hits bubbling over the airways.

I sat down with the members of Voicemail a few weeks ago. We spoke a little about what their experiences were like at the height of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Kevyn addressed the mental health piece and spoke of the vast amount of people struggling. He referred to Delus, a member of the dancehall fraternity and brother, who was lost to suicide some years ago and proudly

mentioned a partnership with former NFL player Jay Barnett, to spread mental health awareness. Jerome, or Qraig with a “Q”, added that one issue about mental illness is the fact that its sufferers are not always homeless people eating from garbage bins, but so called “normal” individuals. He says that he spent much of his own time during lockdown baking and focusing on his pastry company Beg Yuh Piece. These activities helped him get through, along with watching tv and writing music.

Group dynamics can be tricky and subject to different things. When they lost member Oneil Edwards tragically, the remaining artistes relied on their bond as a unit to keep going. According to Qraig, Voicemail is a “brand for life”. He posits that there have been other situations where the group has been tried, but it has always been guided by the premise that “family is everything” and in it, the members have invested sweat, breath, time, and not to mention, tears.

The idea of balance as in life, led us to discuss the group’s individual projects. Qraig currently has a mix tape out called “Congrats”, with several singles already bubbling on the airways. Among these is “When Was the Last Time”, a spicy feature for the ladies where he explores balance in relationships, and tells women “Doan sekkle, yah nuh Meadowrest”, and to not “stick around if [him] a tear [you] down”. He also instructs, “Gyal yuh want action, not a bag a mouth. If him nah do wha him fi do den put him out.” Kevyn’s individual projects also include new music and expanding his clothing line brand, Skillachi, which started from a need for a vest for a past performance. His new

Both men are excited about where Voicemail, the brand, is currently, and where it is headed. They are confident that their sole endeavors strengthen it and make it better. According to Kevyn, their day one standards account for them having the same energy in both solo and group projects. They both attest that it is natural, influenced by a twenty-year relationship

and rooted in compromise. Voicemail’s partnership lacks the influence of ego, women and money, a decision they made in a pact years ago at the group’s formation. There are no plans when selecting music they perform, but that “fun factor” which makes fans feel good.

The group’s new single “Still Here” celebrates its sustainability and speaks to those who “said [they] never did a go mek it; now look at where [they] are.”

It also pays homage to Oneil and tells him to “rest in peace as they stay real to the dream.”

It isn’t news that once per month we may experience an overnight break out along on the cheek and jaw line courtesy of our “oh so friendly” hormones who invite themselves

into our lives (ugh!) That’s once per month…we deal with it, but with the mask, though a life saver, causes new levels of skin congestion – a mix of sebum, bacteria, stress and carbon dioxide. This congestion normally results in acne.

Let me state importantly, that acne is a very common skin condition and can be managed and in some cases cured/ prevented if treated correctly.

Acne can be categorized into two fields, inflammatory and noninflammatory. With that being said, one blackhead does not mean you should be treating your entire face with the strongest form of benzoyl peroxide! Instead the solution should be identifying what type of breakout you are having and how to treat and manage it. Here are four of the main types of pimples:

Whiteheads (Non-inflammatory)

Blackheads (Non-inflammatory)

Pustule (Inflammatory)

Nodules/Blind pimples (Inflammatory)

These annoying breakouts are caused by follicles blocked/closed with oil. It leaves only a small opening allowing a “white head” to be visible. Because it air tight no oxygen is able to reach it. This is why the colour remains white and the texture is like solid coconut oil.

Oil and dirt get trapped in the follicle but the pore is open wide enough so that the contents come in contact with oxygen, this causes the black colour. These are often deeper than whiteheads and if left untreated can leave the pore open permanently or scarring.

Oil, dirt and bacteria get trapped fully beneath the skin and get infected causing pus to form. These are normally painful around the area and look inflamed. Due to what is inside them, they often spread pretty easily when popped incorrectly.

Similar to a pustule, these are pimples caused by oil and bacteria being trapped beneath the skin. However, these are without a head so removing them is difficult.

They are often inflamed and if picked can leave deep scarring. Sometimes if left untreated can develop into cysts.

You can’t dream of clear skin and it happens, you have to put in the work and be consistent to reap the rewards. This means, these breakouts will not disappear on their own, an effective but safe treatment plan is needed. Here’s the breakdown:

Non-inflammatory Acne: 1. Use a skin appropriate cleanser twice per day. DO NOT go to sleep in makeup or without doing your skin routine. Regular bar soaps SHOULD NOT be used as cleansers… EVER! 2. Depending on your skin type, exfoliate 2 – 3 times per week. Try to avoid using scrubs with large granules, beads or beans; these will create tears in your skin causing further breakouts.

3. Use an antibacterial or antimicrobial toner that will clean deep down in your pores. For a budget friendly option, try witch hazel. You can also opt to use one

with niacinamide or tea tree based.

4. Grab yourself a niacinamide serum – you’ll thank me later.

5. Never skip this step; moisturizing your skin will put the proper barriers in place to prevent stripping. Find a treatment based moisturizer that will continue to fight the breakouts after your routine. Avoid using heavy oils like coconut oil!

Acids to consider – Salicylic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide Azaleic acid.

Inflammatory Acne: Most often than not, it’s best to see an esthetican if you begin to have these types of breakouts.

I do not recommend that you pop these at home, as you risk having the bacteria spread but also causing permanent scarring. You may follow steps 1-4 listed above however, if you notice that they hurt (which the normally do) get an Advil liquid gel, make

a small hole and apply some of the gel onto the bump (NEVER Toothpaste) and allow it to dry down. This will significantly reduce the pain and irritation prior to your skin specialist visit.

Acids to consider – Salicylic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide, Azaleic acid, glycolic acid P.S – Invest in a facial extractor, this will help you to remove blackheads and whiteheads easily at home. However, if you aren’t sure, book an appointment with a skin specialist.

urks and Caicos is a tropical Atlantic archipelago southeast of Miami, Florida, and north of the Dominican Republic.

The country is a British overseas territory of about 100 named islands and cays.

As its name suggests, there are two island groups: the Turks Islands of Grand Turk and Salt Cay to the east, and the larger Caicos Islands archipelago of Providenciales, North Caicos Middle Caicos, East Caicos, South Caicos and West Caicos to the west.

The majority of the population of Turks and Caicos resides on the island of Providenciales and Grand Turk supports the second greatest population, as well as the nation’s capital city of Cockburn Town.

Today, luxury tourism is the primary source of income for Turks and Caicos.

There is a wide range of places to visit across the islands, including expansive all-inclusive resorts, quiet hotels

sand is formed from the naturally broken-down particles of sea shells and hard corals, which results in breathtaking bright white sand, with touches of pink and peach hues.

Culture: The Turks and Caicos islands share many cultural elements with the Bahamas, as many local residents have Bahamian ancestry and have lived or were born in the Bahamas. They are geographically part of the Bahamas, and a loose union was proposed in 2009 to link the two countries.

Attempts have been made to encourage the preservation of local culture, such as through cultural awareness programs and the creation of the Chief Cultural Officer post. In 2003, the annual Conch Festival event was also created, which along with a food festival atmosphere, incorporates elements of the local culture through live music and Junkanoo.

Music: Ripsaw is a local music genre developed during slavery times.

It consists of scraping an instrument, such as a screwdriver, over a saw blade to create a scraping sound. Playing ripsaw is called ripping

the saw. Common accompaniments are the guitar, drums and triangle. Junkanoo, a Bahamian music genre, was brought back to the islands by returning Turks and Caicos islanders who left to find work in nearby Bahamian Islands Cuisine: As a small archipelago nation, it is no surprise that the traditional cuisine of the Turks and Caicos is centered around seafood.

Conch, lobster, fish and turtle was collected from the ocean and maize, beans, okra, squash and plantains were grown in small farm plots. These products were used to create stews, soups, johnny cake cornbread and fish, with peas n' grits, which was hominy with legumes.

As trade with Turks and Caicos increased, the maize hominy was largely replaced by imported rice, which led to peas and rice being the quintessential side for most dishes.

Neighboring countries such as the Bahamas and Jamaica, have influenced many of the modern popular foods in the Turks and Caicos today, such as deep-fried conch fritters, and jerk chicken.
