his year the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission successfully hosted the 34th Independence Anniversary Celebration Launch at the Multipurpose Cultural & Exhibition Center in Antigua.

As thousands came out to enjoy the celebrations and showcase their national pride, they were joined by many government officials including Minister of Sports, Culture and National Festivals, Hon. E. P Chet Greene; Cliff Williams Chairman of the ABFC; Senator Colin James and Lionel “Max” Hurst, Chief Of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister Of Antigua & Barbuda.

The 34th Independence Celebration Calendar was released a few weeks ago highlighting a packed schedule for Antigua and Barbuda. This year’s calendar features a series of events geared towards all Antiguans and Barbudans inclusive of Antigua.

The presentations include; Golden Memories, an Independence Calypso Monarch Competition, Junior Panorama, National Youth Rally, Panache, Independence Food Fair, and specific days to recognize the decorative efforts of businesses.

LOVE, MARRIAGE, FAMILY, and FRIENDSHIP We grow up with the thinking, understanding or the teachings that as we age, we learn and we gain knowledge and experience; with this knowledge and experience we are expected to continue to grow while making friends and creating a family, etc. Then when you’re all grown up, or somewhere along the way you will find your true love and live happily ever after…….the end!!

I know I don’t need to say this but “Wake-Up” that isn’t the typical life, a few might experience something, they think, is close to that dream but for the average person life has a whole different plan for you or us.

As we age (or mature) and experience life’s many changes, we meet so many people, we make new friends, we expand our family (through marriage or children etc.) and we find ourselves having to make choices. Choices as to who to keep close, who to stay far away from, which family members are truly family and which friends are truly friends.

Love, Marriage, Family and Friendship – wow, what a title for an editorial. Love is such a strong word when used in its true and purest sense. Marriage is such a commitment and could be a job (require much work), Family is such a great thing to have and sometimes not and last but not least there’s Friendship. I left the word Friendship for last and I’ll close this editorial with a paragraph on Friendship. Let’s look at the Webster’s definition of the words listed above: •

Love – a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person, strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties.

•

Marriage – the state of being united to a person as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law

•

Family – a group of people who are related to each other, a group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head

•

Friendship – the state of being friends, the relationship between friends, a friendly feeling or attitude, kindness or help given to someone

Please take a few minutes to review the definitions above and consider the people you Love, your Marriage, your Family and Friends, take a few more minutes, think deep and hard and answer the question based on your own personal life experience. Which of the categories listed above is the most important in your life? Think of your mother or father, your brothers or sisters, aunts or uncles, husband or wife, your friends.

Now, if you read my editorial from last month, you’ll see that I’m kind of obsessed with circles and in many ways the circle of life. Draw four circles and label them accordingly; Love, Marriage, Family and Friends. Write the names of the people you love in the circle titled Love, write the names of the person or persons you are or were married to in the circle titled Marriage, write the names of your family members in the circle titled Family and lastly write the names of the people you consider to be friends in the circle titles Friends. Now remember that names can be in more than one circle (I would hope so at least – Love, Marriage, Family & Friends – there should be some overlap). Now review the names in the individual circle and select any names that are in all four circles. Those people are your foundation, those relationships are based on Friendship.

Here is my summary analysis of Love, Marriage, Family and Friendship. Friendship is the true foundation of all relationships. If you can live your life with your loved ones, with your husband/wife, with your family, with your friends and treat them with the love, respect, trust and understanding that you expect in return; that is the foundation of FRIENDSHIP and true friendship is everlasting. .

I am a father and a friend to my children. I am a husband and a friend to my wife, I am a friend and family to (most of) my family and I try to be like family to most of my friends.

Caribbean Airlines Caribbean Airlines Sales and Marketing team hosted an amazing outreach event in Orlando utilizing their North Florida support team of Roberts & Roberts Management Services, LLC. The event coordination and planning was managed by GGR Marketing & PR. This event was targeted to provide local community leaders and partners with direct access and information about the many services/amenities provided by Caribbean Airlines. Feedback received from the attendees indicated that the experience was impactful and extremely informative while also pleasing to the appetite; with an amazing array of authentic Caribbean foods. The attendees included Consul Generals from Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago along with representatives from many of the National Association and their community partners.

The lawyer answered: "He said, 'You don't have the nerve to shoot me, Yankee pig.'"

Truth, however, is stranger than fiction especially in these days of instant computer translation. However, anyone taking the easy way out should be warned that the first attempt to translate the English phrase, “Out of sight, out of

So then I asked the waiter what the soup made from spinach was called and he said, “Pepperpot” which in Guyana is serious business.

Sometimes, there are well-known English words that trigger very negative reactions. An Asian man walked into the currency exchange in New York City with 2000 yen and walked out with $72. The Asian man got very upset, stormed out of the cambio, and just before slamming the door, turned around and shouted, "Fruc you Amelicans, too!"

And if that is not bad enough, on a visit to the United States, Charles de Gaulle was honoured at a banquet in the White House. Seated beside his wife was an official who spoke no French, but who tried to engage her in conversation by asking “Madame de Gaulle, what do you think the most important thing in life is?” “A penis”, she replied.

Overhearing, her husband said gently “I believe, my dear, that in English it is pronounced ‘appiness’.”

Gospel Explosion Orlando 2015 On Sunday October 25th, 2015, Orlando experienced the electrifyingand well talked about Gospel Explosion Concert of the year at Rejoice in the Lord Ministries, Apopka.

This Fundraising Concert was organized by Jamaica Cultural Connection (JCC) celebrating its 5th Anniversary. Done in the prevailing spirit and theme of this dynamic group of Jamaican visionaries, the audience was held spellbound from the entrance of the Exuberant Joan Myers and the Metro West Gospel Singers, King of Sax Abraham Ogunlade, Little Girl Wonder, 8 yr old, Leah Flynn, Dynamic Papa San, and the Lady of the Hour Gospel Sensation Judy Mowatt.

The Concert raised funds for The Judy Mowatt Outreach Ministries with special emphasis on Bath Primary School, St. Thomas, Jamaica whose students are in dire need of proper nutrition. JCC is assisting financially in establishing a Chicken Farm and Food Program which have already helped to produce marked improvement in the student’s scholastic performance.

Congratulations Buddy and Four More Years of Orlando Success

ing a rail system for the city. It is now twelve years later and all of the projects have been started and many of them completed.

P

olitics is a balancing act and Mayor Buddy Dyer is an expert and master. In many political circles in Orlando, there are many questions concerning his political affiliation as a Democrat. There are people who worship Buddy as a hero and others who dislike him and label him as being a crook. But, in the last election, the mayor won his office by 63%, which was the largest margin of victory in his career.

Buddy has been the mayor for 13 years, and has transformed the dying downtown city area to a vibrant hot spot with something to do for everyone.

“The true strength of the city is its people – and through a community of collaboration and partnership, we worked together for the benefit of all” said Mayor Dyer at his victory speech.

Only 15% of the registered voters in the city voted in the election last week, and many residents don’t approve of Buddy’s tactics and his grip on every aspect of the city.

Some call their mayor a tyrant and no one in the city can challenge or change his plans. But based on his record of achievement, Buddy has made the city a mecca for entertainment, sports, art, medicine, and technology.

In the last election, Buddy was outspent by his opponent, Paul Paulson by $400,000 to $500,000. Paulson entered the race the week of qualifying, and everyone knew he faced an uphill climb. But in October, Buddy spent over $250,000, and that push helped ensure his victory.

As Buddy settles in his office for another four years, the job does not get any easier. Crime is down in the city, but there is a need for better police community relationships, and less police brutality incidents.

There are wonderful communities to raise a family in Orlando, but there are also communities that you would not feel safe in.

Without a doubt, there are more Blacks in positions of authority in Orlando than most cities in the country. Under Mayor Dyer the city embraces diversity, fairness, equality, and his Blueprint initiative has brought $177 million in venue contracts to minority and women businesses. This Blueprint initiative is a national model which makes Orlando a leader in job and business creation for minorities in the United States.

There will always be critics claiming that they have a better idea or they treat the resiMayor Buddy Dyer dents better than the mayor in office. But The recession in 2007 and 2008 did not stop Orlando is moving forward and there is so much to be proud Mayor Dyer from bringing his shared vision to fruition. Prosecutorial Discretion in Removal & Detention Cases

@GailSeeram FREE In-Office Consultation FREE Live Chat www.MyOrlandoImmigrationLawyer.com Prosecutorial discretion is a discretionary relief where Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE), the agency that initiates and executes removal/deportation from the United States, can choose to temporarily pause removal/deportation or release an individual from detention based on certain factors.

In exercising prosecutorial discretion, Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) may administratively close a pending removal case (removal proceedings delayed), grant voluntary departure, grant deferred action (defer a pending removal), reissue or cancel a Notice to Appear, or release a detained individual on bond or an order of supervision.

Note, in exercising prosecutorial discretion, it is unlikely that a pending removal case would be terminated unless there are extenuating factors present. In order to request prosecutorial discretion in a pending removal case or detention case, an immigration lawyer would submit the request to Immigration Custom and Enforcement (ICE).

However, in cases where the immigrant has a criminal history these types of cases are deemed enforcement priorities and prosecutorial discretion will not be exercised in these types of cases. ICE will consider the following factors in deciding whether to grant or exercise prosecutorial discretion: 1. The person's length of presence in the United States, with particular consideration given to presence while in lawful status; 2. The circumstances of the person's arrival in the United States and the manner of his or her entry, particularly if the alien came to the United States as a young child; 3. The person's pursuit of education in the United States, with particular consideration given to those who have graduated from a U.S. high school or have successfully pursued or are pursuing a college or advanced degrees at a legitimate institution of higher education in the United States; 4. Whether the person, or the person's immediate relative, has served in the U.S. military, reserves, or national guard, with particular consideration given to those who served in combat; 5. The person's criminal history, including arrests, prior convictions, or outstanding arrest warrants; 6. The person's immigration history, including any prior removal, outstanding order of removal, prior denial of status,

7. Whether the person poses a national security or public safety concern; 8.

The person's ties and contributions to the community, including family relationships; 9. The person's ties to the home country and condition in the country; 10. The person's age, with particular consideration given to minors and the elderly; 11. Whether the person has a U.S. citizen or permanent resident spouse, child, or parent; 12. Whether the person is the primary caretaker of a person with a mental or physical disability, minor, or seriously ill relative; 13. Whether the person or the person's spouse is pregnant or nursing; 14. Whether the person or the person's spouse suffers from severe mental or physical illness; 15. Whether the person is likely to be granted temporary or permanent status or other relief from removal, including as an asylum seeker, or a victim of domestic violence, human trafficking, or other crime; 16. Whether the person is currently cooperating or has cooperated with federal, state or local law enforcement authorities, such as ICE, the U.S Attorneys or Department of Justice, the Department of Labor, or National Labor Relations Board, among others.

A formal written request for prosecutorial discretion must be submitted to the Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) office with jurisdiction over the pending case. The request must also contain supporting evidence of the above favorable factors. A request for prosecutorial discretion is best prepared and presented to ICE by an immigration lawyer. In most cases, a follow-up phone conversation is needed between the immigration lawyer submitting the request and the ICE official making the decision on whether to grant prosecutorial discretion. A History of Jerk

The Signature Seasoning that Strengthens a Community and Creates an Experience

When someone mentions jerk seasoning or cuisine, only

one name typically comes to mind: Jamaica. The Caribbean island is known for several irrevocable staples: Bob Marley, reggae music, ackee and saltfish (the national dish), and Usain Bolt. The Jamaica Tourist Board reported that Jamaica’s tourism saw a five per cent uptick in stopovers for the Winter 2014-2015 season; MBJ Airports reported a ten per cent increase in traveler traffic through Montego Bay; and for the tenth consecutive year, the nation netted the coveted Caribbean’s Leading Destination Award at the 2015 World Travel Awards ceremony, among many others. Several factors comprise a leading destination: climate, shopping, music, accommodations, the amicability of the citizens, and very importantly, food. Jamaica’s most famous food involves all things jerk—jerk pork, jerk chicken, and these days, even jerk seafood and vegetables.

Jerk seasoning is over three hundred years old; it dates back even to slaves on the island who used it to preserve their meats long before refrigeration systems were invented, according to Sean Garbutt, Group Marketing Director for Associated Manufacturers Ltd., Walkerswood’s parent company. Garbutt added that jerk has a long history of being a popular roadside food.

“Jamaica, has a rich tourism [industry], and we love sharing our music and food,” he said. “Tourists would start with the all-inclusive resort food, then the more adventurous people would be drawn to the jerk huts”. He explained that the irresistible spicy aroma and thick smoke from the barbecue pits would draw them in, and

once they got a taste, they instantly loved it. “Their next question was, ‘How can I make this when I leave Jamaica?’”Rosie Smith, a Jamaica native living in Central Florida and veteran jerk cook, made another distinction.

“When they cooked jerk, they would use the pimento wood to make coal, and because the allspice flavor is also in the coal, it would give [the meat] a nice, crispy taste.” Consumers worldwide have fallen in love with Jamaica’s traditional seasoning, and have come to know a key name in the market from which to buy it for themselves: Walkerswood. The company’s now indelible footprint onjerk seasoning began in 1940 when the community of Walkerswood, St Ann deceided to develop what became known as the Lucky Hill Co-operative Farm, Jamaica’s first registered cooperative farm. When communities island-wide began forming community councils, Walkerswood formed its Walkerswood Community Council, which had four key objectives: (1) build a community center; (2) provide drinking water for everyone in the community; (3) improve the Basic School; and (4) create jobs for its unemployed citizens. In the early 1970’s, Walkerswood Caribbean Foods Ltd. (then called Cottage Industries) was born.The steady increase in tourist demand for jerk pork and the fact that many of the villagers raised pigs in their backyards or farms already presented the people of Walkerswood the opportunity of a lifetime. With the help of Jamaica Industrial Development Corporation, Walkerswood Caribbean Foods Ltd. began selling jerk pork to vendors in 1976.

In 1983, the company began bottling the seasoning and selling it in stores, and the rest is history. “[Jamaicans] would move to the U.S. and other countries and cook the jerk foods,” Garbutt noted. “Then they would come home and buy more.” After receiving many letters requesting the iconic seasoning, Walkerswood made history in 1986 as the first Jamaican exporter of jerk seasoning.

Walkerswood now works with farmers in the namesake community who plant the main ingredients necessary to create the seasoning, including pimento, escallion (green onion), and scotch bonnet peppers. In recent years, jerk seasoning has undergone a evolution, one Garbutt passionately welcomes. “The real beauty is that jerk is a true all-purpose seasoning; it tastes like so many things combined. You can use it in varying degrees based on what’s being cooked.”..................Cont page 14

n October 18th, 2015 the Central Florida community were treated to an afternoon and evening of pure Caribbean culture and with an extra flava of Jamaica. The 4th annual Orlando Jerk and Caribbean Culture Festival was presented at the Central Florida Fairgrounds and the community came out in support of the event. The authentic jerk seasoning with the smokers and the aroma of JERK was everywhere.

year’s atmospheric food festival, family, fun day, which was held at the spacious uniquely designed Markham Park in Sun-rise, Florida from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. The day began at 6:00 am for the vendors, and the bright sun and timely setup of all the corporate, clothing and food booths, (to name a few) was an indication of the day ahead, you already knew you were in for an experience.

At 10:00 am sharp as I walked the park, and admired the pro-fessionally decorated booths and Grace banners and logo’s everywhere, the organizers and the vendors were ready to swing into action, and so were the participants, they arrived with a smile, and bags in hand to collect all the give-a-ways, walk the booths and sign up for a chance to win one of the following prizes, a basket, a 55” TV, A free Toyota Rental, Trips from Car-ibbean Airlines or JetBlue, just to name a few.

Primarily a food festival, I would be remiss not to take you through this phenomenal Experience. For the lovers of smoke flavors to those with a more sophisticated palate, there was something culinary spectacular for everyone. At the very core of this celebration of fun, family and fellowship is the world-renowned Jerk with all its spice and flavors and the topnotch display of culinary artistry-whether in the fiercely fought cooking competitions, the informative cooking demonstrations, or the infinite variety of foods for patrons to enjoy.

Patrice Malcolm: Jamaica’s 2015 Chef of the Year has prepared meals for President Obama when he vis-ited Jamaica demonstrated her cu-linary skills with flair and poise.

The audience watched and took notes as Jamaica’s 2015 Chef of the Year, Patrice Malcolm from the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel did her cooking demo.

The line was endless to sample her culinary delights, and well worth it.

After all, she’s only cooked for the sitting president of the United States of America, President Barack Obama on his famous trip to Jamaica earlier this year.

Union Cultural Stage; the Hot Zone; and, of course, the main performance stage. It was simply a sight to behold. Everyone was given an opportunity to enjoy their favorite artists earlier in the day before the main stage was ready in the evening. Special appearance by 'Gentleman' was met with applause while Comedian Chris Johnny Daley was a funny addition. Once the main stage came alive, the other three stages closed and the focus and attention was shifted center stage.

On the main stage, Christopher Martin had the women, falling in love all over again, they screamed when he removed his shirt. However, it was hit songs, including Cheaters Prayer, Take My Love, Mi Fren Dem, Big Deal, and Chill Spot, which did them in.

Third World did their thing in true Third World style by wooing the crowd with some of their popular hits such as Now that We Found Love and Forbidden Love.

As the crowd waited for the Veteran singer Barrington Levy to close out the show, overall response was, that he was well worth the wait, because he did not disappoint. He closed the show with a bang delivering some of his popular hits, here I come, Too Experienced, Living Dangerously and my personal favorite Prison Oval Rock.

What a tremendous end to a fabulous day! Sunday, November 8th 2015 will always be a memorable day for me. This was my first time attending this dynamic event, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. From the gates opened at 10:00 am, it was lights, camera, and action for the Jerk Festival Team.

In the Publix Cook-Off Celebrity Quick Fire Challenge dubbed The Battle of the Beauties, Miss Universe Jamaica 2014, Kaci Fennell, and Miss Jamaica World 2008, Brittany Lyons, traded their sashes for aprons and their crowns for kitchen utensils as they displayed their culinary skills in this fierce competition. The Celebrity Cook Kaci Fennell emerged the winner.

Fennell was proudly excited, and said "It was stiff competition, but I just did my thing. I was having a little meltdown inside, but I regained my composure, and just did it." The winning dish prepared by Fennell was a vegetable stir fry medley, a sauce using Grace Tomato Ketchup, and a jerk steak.

Just imagine having 3 stages and the main stage with Live Performances. There was something for everyone on the various stages throughout the venue: the Fusion Sound Stage; the Western

I’m an event planner and conceptually would not know where to begin in executing such a flawless event. The vibes were one of peace and relaxation. There was something for everyone from age 2 to 102 to participate in, or simply sit back and watch; from the culinary demonstrations, to the cultural performances, let’s not even talk about the amazing variety at the Food Court. The Kidz Zone was the perfect all day babysitter, as you know the young ones never get tired of the quintessential bounce house, the wives enjoyed shopping for cultural jewelry and clothing, while the men enjoyed themselves in their men cave playing several domino tournaments.

This was by far the most interesting experience I’ve had at a 1 day event. If you missed this phenomenal event…..be sure not to miss it next year as they celebrate year number 15. Stay tuned for more coverage and information leading up to next year’s event.

He provided a comparison of the typical jerk pork, on which the seasoning is usually laid thick, versus using a subtler amount to cook chicken in olive oil or with soy sauce, and one could even be inventive and add cinnamon and sugar to sweeten the jerk recipe. “Jerk isn’t about just grilling it for summer—there’s still a perception that it can only be cooked on the grill. It can be used in the dead of winter.”

In addition to smashing the seasonal myths, Garbutt said the presentation is evolving as well. Vendors served people quickly and practically—jerk chicken on hard dough bread in foil, jerk shrimp in a bag, or a full plate of jerk pork with starchy sides like dumplings, or white and yellow yams. The servings gave tourists their gratification as soon as possible while filling them up completely. Now, however, European chefs from hotels have begun to teach the cooks how to present the food in a way that pleases the eye as well as the taste buds, and has more nutritional elements on the plate than meat and starch. Additionally, jerk has become synonymous with spicy food, and some people shy away as a result. “People started asking, ‘how do we tame it?” Garbutt said. “So three or four years ago, we created a mild jerk seasoning that contains fifty per cent less spice.”

The overall evolution is a natural rite of passage into even greater adoration of the seasoning, because it now looks all the more familiar to tourists, who are used to seeing food presented decoratively, while satisfying their culinary curiosity. Garbutt revealed that jerk is as popular as it is because it is experiential. “Street food is where the passion is at, no matter where you are in the world because it gives greater exposure to the culture.

They smell [the jerk], they get to taste and enjoy the food, they talk with the locals while they eat, and they enjoy their surroundings. It’s a multi-sensory experience.” He recalled a jerk-loving tourist from New York who told him that whenever he makes jerk, he puts on his Bob Marley music. “‘Other than my toes in the sand, I feel like I’m back in Jamaica,’” the man praised. In another example, he recalled meeting a Jewish gentleman who loves jerk pork, and only makes the exception to eat pork in that way.Jerk is a seasoning with a very long history and is now finally embraced for more than its traditionally thick flavor from the jerk huts. It is now used for lobster, salmon and other fish, vegetables, and is even augmented with fruits.

“People always tell me it’s good, that they can taste it all the way down to the bone,” Smith said of people who taste her jerk dishes. Thanks to jerk’s versatility, no one has to wait until summer or save up to fly to Jamaica to enjoy the experience. “You can add the flavor of Jamaica with a spoonful of our seasonings,” Garbutt said.

sk any Trini what comes after “A good wine…” I tried that once and got a broad grin and chuckled “Heh, heh, hey.” One lady said, “Well, you know…” Another said, “Well it depends what you doing.” When pressed further she explained, “Well if is Carnival and you on the street and people watching is one thing but if you home in bed, well that is something else.” Then I asked the obvious, “What is meant by the English phrase ‘a good wine needs no bush’?” Most people were not sure. Some said they had no idea that you make wine with bush, they always thought that wine was made from grapes, but if you think about a local wine like a pommerac wine and you want to add a flavor like Cilantro (Shadon Beni/ Bhandania) or Chive then you might spoil the taste. A few spoke about withdrawing to secluded areas to enjoy the wine better but if it is so good, they argued, you don’t need to do it in the bush.

The phrase “A good wine needs no bush” goes back to the England of Shakespeare’s time where innkeepers serving wine, especially wine that was special, hung up a bush at the entrance of their establishment to let people know that good stuff was to be had inside. In fact, in As You Like It, Shakespeare said, “If it be true that a good wine needs no bush, ‘tis true, that a good play needs no epilogue.”

An Australian company, Premier Estates Wine, recently launched an ad created by mega-advertising firm Saatchi Massius, which showed a woman with a strategically placed glass of red wine, using the tagline 'you can almost taste the bush'. The Mirror newspaper reported, “The ad, which appeared in an online YouTube video for Aussie winemakers Premier Estates Wine as well as on its Twitter account, stars a brunette model singing the praises of the wine.

She is shown with a glass of red wine, saying 'take this exquisite Aussie shiraz, a mere £5.99 a bottle' and then taking a sip and adding ‘Mmm, Luscious, earthy, bursting with fruit and spice.’ She then places the glass down on a table in front of her - right in front of her crotch - and says: ‘Australia practically jumps out of the glass - in fact, some say you can almost taste the bush.’ …The Twitter campaign also showed the same woman in a cropped photo showing just her torso and lower body with the glass of red wine 'directly in front of her crotch' with overlaid text reading 'I want to #TasteTheBush'.”

There were complaints like bush, the most important from Wine Australia - a statutory body which promotes Aussie wines abroad - saying the ads were offensive as they were sexist and degrading towards women. Another group, Alcohol Concern, challenged whether the ads were in breach of advertising codes because they linked alcohol with sexual activity. Then the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned the ads for being offensive and treating women as sex objects - and making an obvious reference to oral sex.

One of the most interesting questions that emerged is whether advertisers purposefully make ‘tasteless’ ads to fuel Twitter interest and, possibly, rage? In other words, was this very obvious ad designed to attract a mixture of flak and praise?

The company’s Twitter messages included, “Due to interest in our Bush, we're giving away 5 more cases! Tweet us "I want to #TasteTheBush" in a punny way to win.”

Tasting the bush in Shiraz is secondary.

What I am waiting for is a company called “Wine Trinidad” to see what it's ads will look like.

Let’s get started: NEW YORK NY: Quentin Tarantino, and his new movie ‘The Hateful Eight’, is being boycotted by police union in New Jersey, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and New York in response to comments he made while participating in an anti-police brutality rally earlier this month. While addressing a RiseUp October demonstration in New York City’s Washington Square Park, Tarantino made this comment: “When I see murders, I do not stand by - I have to call a murder a murder, and I have to call the murderers the murderers.”

In response to this, seemingly logical commentary on the national epidemic of law enforcement-related violence and murders we’ve all watched in recent months; President of the New York Police Department’s Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association Patrick Lynch has called for ‘a city-wide boycott’ of Tarantino, and his film, arguing that, “it’s no surprise that someone who makes a living glorifying crime and violence is a cop-hater, too.”

Writers’ View Points: Let me begin by giving my personal take this controversy involving Quentin Tarantino. Now, when it comes to movies, Quentin Tarantino is hardly my favorite director (his masterpiece Pulp Fiction notwithstanding) however I was pleasantly surprised by Mr. Tarantino’s uncompromising take on the violence which has claimed the lives of so many of his fellow citizens. Police brutality is a major problem, whether Patrick Lynch and others care to accept that or not - and the fact that this measured commentary is enough to spark such an unhinged reaction from the NYPD is telling. I completely support Quentin Tarantino for his comments and I just might even see his movie now.

Meanwhile, to the North: There are certainly many reasons why the Stephen Harper government in Canada was at times referred to as ‘the last remnants of the Bush administration in North America’ - the former leader of Canada's conservatives was an avid climatechange denier, and fear-monger who used irrational distrust, and marginalization, of Canada’s muslim populations as a major tenet of his reelection campaign. Harper was also a major, if subtle, ally of American conservatives - using Canada’s inherent closeness with the United States to pressure the Obama administration on issues like approving the Keystone XL pipeline. This did much more to cool relations between Washington and Ottawa, than actually influence US policy, but that never stopped Stephen Harper from trying.

Now, change has come to Canada in the form Justin Trudeau - son of late Canadian political icon Pierre Trudeau - and his clear majority government in the Canadian Parliament. The new government is setting records without even presenting its first policy initiative- as the first child of a former Canadian Prime Minister to assume the office, Trudeau newly named cabinet includes fifteen women, and Lt. Colonel Harjit Sajjan as the first Sikh-Canadian National Defense minister in Canadian history. Trudeau's intention to name a cabinet of well-qualified public servants that actually ‘looks like Canada’ certainly achieves that goal in sheer diversity - and I applaud the PM for it. On policy, I considered myself as rooting for the New Democratic Party of Canada, which began the campaign to the left of the Labour Party - now, I’m interested to see how Trudeau approaches a host of issues; including balancing his new commitment to addressing Climate Change while also viewing the White House’s rejection of the Keystone XL oil pipeline as ‘disappointing’, and his new noninterventionist foreign policy in a post-Harper world where everybody seems to be bombing someone else. That being said my overall opinion on the return of Liberal Canada would have to be this: "Good Luck" - Justin And lastly, my beloved 'Ayiti' has elected another celebrity to public office - vocal critic of the Martelly government, Antonio Cheramy, better known as Don Kato of Brothers Posse, has been elected to represent the West Department of Haiti in the Senate. As he serves the most populous region and the seat of the Haitian capital, the new Senator from the West Department will more than likely have to work with (or at less come in constant contact with) the same government that he often criticized. I hope this rivalry between ‘Don Kato’ and ‘Sweet Mickey’ can transform into a productive partnership that helps to rebuild a community where damage from the 2010 Earthquake is still very much present. If Don Kato is as much of a revolutionary as he seems from his music, things may be on the right path for the West Department and the Republic of Haiti. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Inner Circle Concert Orlando 2015

Method: Cut off the stalk from the cauliflower and cut cauliflower in pieces. Wash cauliflower and put into a steamer with water. Cover and let cauliflower steam until soft. Put steamed cauliflower into a bowl and mashed with a potato masher. Add garlic, lemon juice, vegenaise and parsley and mix together. Salt to taste.

Jamaica Diaspora Conference in June 2015 bears fruit

Legal Process available to "Deportees" Involuntary Returnees

Attorneys Wayne Golding Sr., and Joan Pinnock who are both Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board Members for the Southern United States and the North Eastern respectively continue to lead the charge in the determination of the

eligibility for persons involuntarily returned to the countries of their birth to return to the US legally. The initiative was born out of the first immigration symposium that was held at the Sixth Biannual Jamaica Diaspora Conference convened this past June in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Organized by Pinnock and Golding a day of service informational forum offered pro bono legal advice to involuntary returnees regarding their eligibility to legally return to the United States since being removed. Golding commented that deportation is a devastating result for individuals who have violated Immigration Laws in the United States and that the label “ Deportee” attaches deep staining and prejudicial stigma once persons are involuntarily returned to the country of their birth. He is encouraging the use of a new terminology “Involuntary Returnees”.

The forum was held in Georgetown, Guyana on November 6th, 2015 at the Albert Street Hot and Spicy Banquet Hall. The format of forum th included an open presentation to over 150 returnees, a question and answer session that was followed by an optional one on one consultation.

The attorneys plan to return to Guyana in early 2016 for additional forums.

According to both attorneys since the program began in June, there Attorney Joan Pinnock have been calls for them to bring the forum to various other Caribbean countries and even Africa; and they currently have plans to visit Trinidad and Tobago in the next few weeks.

September 20, 2015 saw the work of Golding and Pinnock result in the historic return of two Jamaican attendees to the June forum, to the United States. After analysis of their cases and assistance by the attorneys, Devon Cameron and his sister Donna Cameron, who were deported as children from Maryland, United States, 25 years ago, on drugrelated offences were joyously and triumphantly returned to the US as citizens to their families.

According to Pinnock, of the over 50 involuntary returnees who were interviewed during the June forum, the Cameron siblings were immediately determined as eligible to return to the United States as they were illegally deported U.S Citizen since they had gained derivative citizenship through their parent. The attorneys have returned to Jamaica twice since June to interview and provide probono to over 400 additional involuntary returnees. As a result several more cases are now pending.The attorneys were subsequently invited to and did visited Guyana to host a similar informational forum for involuntary returnees to Guyana from the USA.
