Now Danielle and her family need us, as the community, to rally our resources and our support to make a difference in her life. The task ahead is greater than any one person and even greater than the group as a whole.

our years ago, I remember working feverishly and swear ing to everyone in earshot that Barack Obama had a chance of winning the election for President of the United States. After that election, I felt like many others a mixture of euphoria and wonder as President Obama was sworn in. The reason I knew that he would win in spite of people’s concern that he was black and could not win, is that I knew that I was black in America and it didn’t matter. Much like the Caribbean, I felt like people didn’t care what your color was but what you did, who you were as a person. That was proven when President Obama was elected. But then what happened?

Seriously, has any President been as criticized? President George Bush was a colossal failure and things weren’t as hard on him.

Is it true then that in America “You’ve got to work twice as hard to get half as far as a Black person in white America?”

I’ve seen a portrait of a dedicated family and it’s not strong enough to prove that they are good solid people with the touted family values that conservatives want.

President Obama inherited the biggest recession since the great depression as he headed into office. The great depression, started approximately in 1930 and by 1939 the unemployment rate was at 17.2%. The current unemployment rate in the US just fell under 8% just to give you a comparison. Face the facts, President Obama took on an economy that was failing, he went into office to fix a country that was losing 3/4 of a million jobs each month. The fact is that the world is not one where you press a button and things are fixed immediately. The great depression ended when war erupted in Europe, a war that started simply with others finding other differences in each other to blame for their problems at the time. Those were the conditions that allowed a person like Hitler to develop and influence even decent people.

Nemours Children’s Hospital Welcomes Caribbean Leaders

O

n September 24, 2012, the staff of the Nemours Children’s Hospital in the Lake Nona Medical City opened its doors to a group of local Caribbean community leaders for a “Sneak Peek” of the new facility. The new pediatric hospital is located in Orlando’s developing Medical City at Lake Nona, which is incrementally becoming a vibrant new community where medicine and technology will be accessible for the residents of Central Florida and the world. During this meeting, local leaders were treated to a tour of the state of the art facility which sits on 60 landscaped acres that provide a tranquil environment to their patients. The hospital has 95 beds, inpatient, outpatient, infusion, operating and emergency room capabilities.

Every aspect of the facility was designed with the pediatric patient and family in mind. Some of the special touches include rooftop gardens accessible to patients, a multi-faith inspired chapel, a Sea World created aquarium, “suites” rooms that are child and parent friendly among many other amenities that were the brainchild of a panel

of parents who advised the Nemours development team from start to finish.

The goal of this meeting was to introduce the Nemours staff to local community leaders and the resources available to and from the Caribbean American community. Facilitated by Guenet Roberts of CAP News Magazine, the group of Caribbean entrepreneurs, community activists, and medical professionals discussed ways to include Nemours into the local Caribbean American community. Many ideas were initiated, and will be developed over time, including an outreach program to underserved areas, preventive health care programs, and concierge assistance for families needing assistance in finding Caribbean American resources. One thing is for sure, Nemours is here to stay in Central Florida, and will be an influential force in the direction of community based health care in the area. The staff was very welcoming and eager to interact with and get to know all of the area’s diverse populations. Orlando Revealed at the Congressional Black Caucus

A

year ago Greater Orlando CARES and the Caribbean American Passport were participants and attendees during the Congressional Black Caucus. The focus then was to represent Orlando and learn about Congresswoman Corrine Brown’s initiatives. They participated in ‘The Underground Railroad,’ and ‘Hiding in Plain Sight.’ What a powerful session of discovery of how the ‘then’ of our time is still affecting the ‘now’ of our time. Yes, we have come a long way but equality and fairness for human rights and services, the battle rages on.

Both GO CARES and CAP Magazine have endeavored to keep the fight at the forefront of community.

Although we promote the changes and advancement of our culture, we take pride in reminding us ‘ourselves’ to not become complacent or combative amongst each other because it will take us to a place where our ancestors and trailblazers gave their life for a time to come, a time of promise without compromise….(we only get their together in oneness).

Tis year, at the 2012 Congressional Black Caucus, we shared with pride, as we again supported the initiatives of our Congresswoman, celebrated in her achievement of the Phoenix Award, but it was more personal for our group as we also had

our National CARES Mentoring Movement Conference. Thanks to Visit Orlando and their promotion of Orlando Revealed, GO CARES and partners were celebrated for being the best kept secret in Orlando. What an honor to know that we are considered the type of citizens one should look forward to experiencing when considering relocation to the city beautiful. How awesome is it that when you visit Orlando, you can be wowed by the Caribbean American Passport News Magazine or get in on a mentoring session with SEC Mentoring and for our deaf, you can participate in a camp or workshop by God’s Hands Agency. Although we cannot bring the conference to you in totality we can share the highlights about our organizations which was revealed in our Nation’s Capital on September 20, 2012 hosted by Visit Orlando in the Orlando Revealed Reception. The reception had over 1,275 participants and included Walt Disney World, SeaWorld, Universal, The Mall at Millenia, the Wells Built Museum, Zora, Eric Green Fine Jewelry, and tantalizing food by two local chefs – which we will reveal in our November edition just in time for Thanksgiving. Greater Orlando CARES was the recipient of a $5,000 donation by Visit Orlando and Mayor Dyer wrote expressions on behalf of Caribbean American Passport News Magazine, Commissioner Ings wrote expressions about God’s Hands Agency and State Rep. The L-1 visa is typically approved for an initial period of three years with the possibility of subsequent extensions later on. A petition for a new U.S. office is approved for one year with the possibility of subsequent extensions later on.

The L-1 Visa has two different subcategories: L-1A and L-1B. The L-1A visa is available for managers and executives and the L-1B for staff with specialized knowledge about the company’s products and services, systems, proprietary techniques, management, research, or procedures.

Specifically, when extending status, those with a new office are finding it difficult to show to the Immigration Service that the business is generating enough revenue to support their position in addition to the positions of the rest of the employees.

Conclusion L-1 is a highly beneficial visa for foreign businesspersons seeking to do business in the United States. However, given its complex requirements and the economically challenging climate, any applicant should consult with an experienced immigration attorney before applying.

Note, a group or family photo will not be accepted. Separate digital passport style photos of each family member must be submitted with the Diversity Visa Lottery application. Since the application is submitted on-line, the digital photos are also required to be submitted on-line.

Thereby, the photos can be produced by taking a new digital image or using a digital scanner to scan the photos. 10th Annual Caribbean Health Summit served more than 700 people

he 2012 Caribbean Health Summit was held on Saturday, September 8th, 2012 at the Central Florida Fair grounds. More than 700 individuals from the Central Florida community came out to receive free blood pressure, cholesterol, HIV/AIDS, Syphilis, BMI, Mammograms, DRE (Digital Rectal Exam), PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen), eye, dental screenings from various local and regional health delivery agencies.

Several community leaders, organizations and businesses joined together to support the Tenth Annual Caribbean Health Summit with the theme “A Healthy Community Begins With You”.

n October 1, 2012 the Central Florida Urban League Young Professionals, President Willam Land, the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce , President Guenet Gittens - Roberts and the African American Chamber of Commerce, President Dr. Robert Spooney, convened for the first ever 2012 Political Hob Nob hosted by all three groups.

Candidates came prepared to campaign among the culturally diverse group with plenty of campaign chum and literature. The event began with an hour for the event attendee’s to walk around to each table and personally meet the candidates

and ask questions about their candidacy. All candidates were given roughly two minutes to share their platform and reasons why we should vote for them in the November 6, 2012 general election. There was not a serious head to head among candidates, for each office that was present only one candidate attended the event with the exception of congressional district 10 seat where Val Demings and write-in Naipaul Seegolam both attended. BRYAN AND GARY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING A PUBLIC FORUM FOR SOME OF THE MOST PROVOCATIVE AND THOUGHT PROVOKING TOPICS THAT DEAL WITH EVERYDAY LIFE. HERE’S A LETTER THAT ASKED: WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF THE SHOE WAS ON THE OTHER FOOT? Dear Bryan and Gary, In light of the Presidential campaign and the struggle of women all over, I came across this story in St. Petersburg, FL and thought I would share it with you guys. So imagine a mother and her 11-year-old daughter. The 11 year old is having stomach pains so her mother and boyfriend decides to take her to the hospital. After some tests, the cause of the stomach pain is revealed: The 11-year-old doesn’t have the flu nor does she have food poisoning. Nope. She’s pregnant. And just as her mother is trying to adjust to this devastating news, her 42-yearold boyfriend asks for the keys to the car so he can go buy cigarettes.

Only problem is that he never returns. So the 11-year-old girl is pregnant and her mother’s middle-aged boyfriend suddenly disappears, it doesn’t take a genius to put two and two together.

And as if that wasn’t bad enough, the boyfriend, Gregory Johns, then robs a couple at knife-point, where he reportedly leaves a note apologizing to the 11-year-old girl for sexually assaulting her. He then breaks into the home of an elderly woman, where he gags her and ties her up for 12 hours. But wait, it gets worse. After his crime spree, He calls his girlfriend, apologizes for knocking up her daughter and tells her that the cops will have to kill him before he goes BACK to jail. Oh By the way, did I mention that he’d been in jail 10 times already — on charges ranging from aggravated assault to armed robbery? Eventually, this guy holds up in a hotel where the cops find him. He reportedly comes out of the bathroom with a knife in hand, he threatens the police, and they fatally shoot him.

Now, while we’re all wondering why this mother would let her 11Gary year-old girl around her criminal boyfriend, let’s consider some other facts: 1.) An 11-year-old girl is pregnant. (2.) The father of her child is her mother’s middle aged boyfriend who is 31 years older than she is. (3.) The father of her child is DEAD. And (4.) He was a 10 time convicted criminal. Who is going to say this is a blessing? Who is going to say that this 11 year old girl should have to give birth to her dead, middle aged, criminal boyfriend’s baby?

If this was your child, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? BRYAN: Pro-Choice or Pro-Life, that seems to be the question this woman is asking Gary. Whether to recommend that this lady’s daughter have an abortion or that she be forced to bring the baby to term. What would you do?

GARY: Look, if this was my daughter…I definitely would not consider this a blessing and she would have to get rid of that child. Sorry.

BRYAN: I actually wasn’t expecting to hear you say that Gary. I thought you were the kinda guy that believes that everything happens for a reason. How can you on one hand believe that everything happens for a reason and then act contrary to what that reason is?

GARY: Look man, I don’t think there is anyone on this planet that believes that an 11 year old should be having a child, so I think I would be justified in making the pregnancy go away.

What would you do?

BRYAN: Well this one actually draws at the heart strings. Because if you are Pro-Life, you would have to be heartless to force your 11 year old to bring this child to term. But what if she did have this baby? Would that be so bad? If her mother believed that all life was

precious, even that of the unborn child, would that be such a bad thing?

GARY: Are you saying you would make her have the child?

BRYAN: What I’m saying is that things happen, but that should be no reason to set aside your beliefs should it?

I mean if you believe in life, then you should believe in it no matter what…Right?

GARY: You know normally I would agree with that statement Bryan, but now I would have to say that Bryan circumstances dictate choices.

BRYAN: I understand that Gary, but if your principles can be compromised by difficult situations then you shouldn’t have called them principles to begin with.

Look, my heart goes out to this woman and her daughter, and I honestly don’t know what to tell her to do.

All I can say is whatever you believed in before this happened to you, you should still believe in it in spite of the situation you now find yourself in.

GARY: So you would have your 11 year old girl have the child of her DEAD CRIMINAL BOYFRIEND? You would subject her to the ridicule, the emotional and physical stress of having a child, and the knowledge that her baby’s father was a DEAD CRIMINAL? You would subject her to that? C’mon Bryan….I don’t believe you would do that.

BRYAN: Actually Gary, you are absolutely right. I wouldn’t do that. I wouldn’t have left my 11 year old girl with a 42 year old criminal. I wouldn’t have invited him in the house let alone allowed him to sleep over. I don’t care how bad things are, I would not have put my kids in harms way.

GARY: O.K., you are clearly blaming the mother here and that’s not fair. She can’t be everywhere all the time to watch her 11 year old.

BRYAN: Understandable, but you can’t create the environment…put your child in it…and then act surprised when something like this happens. IS THIS A BLESSING? I don’t know. IS IT A CURSE? I don’t know.

The answer to those questions are above my pay grade, but the mother needs to think long and hard before making a decision because she is partly to blame for the situation she now finds herself in.

GARY: I hear you B, but that doesn’t change what I would do if confronted with the same situation. If my 11 year old daughter was impregnated by a dead criminal, she would not be able to keep that child.

enia McNeal-Fields is from Miami, Florida. Not only is she rather awesome, she truly loves the “305”, as her beloved hometown is affectionately known. So, when I knew I was headed to the very popular CARNIVAL Music Festival in her city; I sought her permission. Because as anyone knows, if you go to Carnival in Miami...chances are you won’t make it back due to the costumes, countries, and concerts that exist in these four days of fun!

Machel Montano is the KING of Soca Music. To go through his laundry list of hits would require more than this article. Machel smashed the stage with his famous dancers, backup singers and his signature dreads. His energy level is not matched and he kept the crowd going for two and a half hours! After performing “Higher Than High, Delirious, Tempa Whine and Bonnie and Clyde” I along with Kiara, lost my voice. An added bonus was popular singer, Patrice, who joined him on stage, too. But, that wasn’t the end. The parade was in seven hours!

After a few hours (and I do mean a few hours) of sleep, we headed towards Sun Life Stadium for the Parade, Costume Contest, Jerk Chicken, Interviews and the next concert! I now see why so many writers drink Red Bull! The rain came and that made it that much more insane! NO one cared, it was

Mr. Kiara Ashanti, my dreadlocked friend and mutual ‘Soca Worshipper’ picked me up for our trip to Miami. Kiara and I pledged to get our “wine” on and complete our stories before we got in on the fun. Ok, we did both at the same time! Our first adventure was the RAVE!!! Ok, the RAVE is not for the weak or young at heart. You better have plenty of carbs to handle all of the concerts that begin at 10:00 p.m. and go until dawn! My treat was KES the BAND! Not only is he an amazing singer and the “Prince” of Soca Music, he’s also dropdead gorgeous. Hey, my job does have its perks! He performed

Carnival and we were happy to be in this realm! Reaching a crowd of over 65,000 people, it was like one big family. After the food in the media tent and another diet coke for my last set of interviews, we called it a weekend.

Genia, I thank you for allowing me to enjoy your city. I’ll ask for permission again next year!

In twelve days I get to enjoy more fashion in Atlanta. I’ll be judging the Miss Black USA Collegiate Pageant! Here I come Georgia! Peaches and Pecans will be in my backpack!
