Home Stay
Carey requires all international students to live in accommodation approved by the school. Carey is committed to ensuring our students live in a nurturing home environment, enjoying all the advantages of feeling part of Australian family life. Our Carey Home Stay families are expected to speak English as a first language to provide immersion in the English language and the opportunity for each of our International students to develop fluency. Living and being engaged with an Australian family certainly strengthens the academic performance of our international students and enrichens the perspective of local community and culture. Our Carey Home Stay approved by the school provides: • a comfortable, secure and clean home • a well-equipped room to support study, rest and recreation • internet access • a balanced diet that meets the energy requirements of each student • support for the student’s Saturday sport and extra curricula activities during the week • A responsible and nurturing home which supports the student’s own family’s values • Close communication with both the student’s Local Support Person and the student’s family
• Support for the general health and medical needs of the student alongside the support of the student’s Local Support Person and the school’s student services staff • Support and communication around student attendance, ensuring all students meet their student visa attendance requirements. Our Home Stay Co-ordinator is committed to finding a Home Stay family that best suits our student’s individual needs and expectations. Before a Home Stay is allocated, time will be spent getting to know each student. Carey is proud of the close relationship we have developed with all our Home Stay families, many of whom have been part of our network for many years. Once a student moves into a Home Stay, the school values close and open communication between the student, Local Support Person, our Home Stay Co-ordinator and school support staff to guarantee each student feels settled and happy. Home Stay hosts set their own fee approved by the school, however the school recommends a weekly fee of AUD $350 per week. Approximately AUD $80–$140 would be sufficient to cover incidental expenses, transport and entertainment. During a holiday period when a student may be absent from Home Stay, a holding fee of $180 per week is required.
