Women & Infants Center for Women’s Medicine Women & Infants’ Center for Women’s Medicine provides patients with a wide range of general and specialized medical services. Some of our patients come to us directly, and others are referred by their own physicians to benefit from our specialized care through:

Center for Obstetric and Consultative Medicine As doctors of internal medicine, we are also specially trained in treating pregnant women. We offer the highest level of care for patients with a medical condition before pregnancy, during pregnancy and the hospital stay, and immediately after delivery.

Our providers are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems in pregnancy, and we pride ourselves in providing uniquely interdisciplinary, comprehensive and individualized care to pregnant women with medical disorders.

We work collaboratively with obstetricians, family practitioners, midwives, primary care providers and internists, providing consultation and ongoing co-management of the medical issue during pregnancy and the postpartum period. These services are offered with Women & Infants’ Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, through the Integrated Program for High-Risk Pregnancy.

Our Obesity in Pregnancy Program offers care for obese patients who are already pregnant, pre-conception counseling, and active intervention for obese women wishing to lose weight before they conceive.

Center for Obstetric and Consultative Medicine (cont’d) Kenneth Chen, MD, is the director of the Division of Obstetric and Consultative Medicine.

He has completed dual fellowships in endocrinology at The Prince of Wales Hospital, University of New South Wales, Sydney, and in obstetric and consultative medicine at Women & Infants Hospital/Brown University. He is an assistant professor of medicine and of obstetrics and gynecology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

In addition to general obstetric medicine consultation, Dr. Chen is available for endocrine consultation for pregnant and non-pregnant patients.

Jonathan I. Gates, MD, is Care New England’s chief information officer, connecting

clinical practice and system information flow to improve quality and efficiency of care.

Dr. Gates is a board certified hospitalist with a subspecialty in internal medicine and is a graduate of McGill University. He completed his residency and served as chief resident at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.

Erica Hardy, MD, MA, MMSc, is the director of the Women’s Infectious Diseases

Consult Service at Women & Infants Hospital. She completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. She is a clinical assistant professor of medicine in the divisions of obstetric medicine and infectious disease. In addition to obstetric medicine and preoperative consultations, Dr. Hardy is available to see consults in infectious disease for pregnant and non-pregnant patients.

Niharika Mehta, MD, is the director of ambulatory services and the Specialty Care in

Pregnancy Program (SCIPP) at Women & Infants Hospital. She completed a fellowship in obstetric and consultative medicine at Women & Infants Hospital/Brown University and is board certified in internal medicine. She is a clinical assistant professor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Mehta is available to see obstetric medicine and preoperative consults.

Srilakshmi Mitta, MD, completed her fellowship in obstetric and consultative medicine at Women & Infants Hospital/Brown University. Dr. Mitta is board certified in internal medicine. She is a clinical assistant professor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Raymond Powrie, MD, is the chief of medicine and senior vice president for population health at Women & Infants Hospital and executive chief of medicine at Care New England. He completed a fellowship in obstetric and consultative medicine at Women & Infants Hospital/Brown University. He is a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Powrie is the lead editor of a leading international textbook in the field of obstetric medicine entitled, “deSwiet’s Medical Disorders in Obstetric Practice.”

Patricia Russo-Magno, MD, FCCP, is a board certified hospitalist with specialties in critical care medicine and pulmonary diseases. She is a graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine. She completed an internship and residency at Rhode Island Hospital, and a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Brown University.

Center for Primary Care At Women & Infants’ Center for Primary Care, our focus is not only on the specific health and wellness needs of our adult patients, but on each patient’s individual concerns, comfort, well-being and convenience. We strive to improve health and well-being through education about preventive care, building awareness of major health issues and promoting behavioral changes.

The physicians at Women & Infants’ Center for Primary Care are all board certified in internal medicine.

We treat men and women with both acute and chronic conditions. Patients without a primary care provider can schedule an appointment to see a physician who will coordinate all of their health care needs.

Our providers: Natalia Belosloudtseva, MD, PhD, is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She earned a doctor of medicine degree in obstetrics and gynecology from Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Institute, and a doctorate in obstetrics and gynecology and public health from Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy, both in Russia. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Douglas Blecker, MD, is a clinical instructor in the Department of Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed a residency through the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

Laura Ofstead, MD, is the medical director of the Center for Primary Care. She earned her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed a residency in general internal medicine through Brown at Rhode Island Hospital and the Veterans Administration Center.

Jeanne Oliva, MD, is a graduate of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University where she completed a residency in internal medicine at Rhode Island Hospital. She is a clinical instructor in the Department of Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Jessica Pineda, MD, sees patients at both the Center for Primary Care and the Center for Women’s Behavioral Health. She is a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and completed residency in psychiatry and family medicine at the University of Cincinnati. She is board certified in family medicine and board eligible in psychiatry.

Center for Women’s Behavorial Health At the Center for Women’s Behavioral Health, we specialize in outpatient care for a wide range of behavioral health issues, including mood and anxiety disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period, substance abuse, psychiatric complications from medical disorders, crisis management, and anxiety and depression stemming from pregnancy loss, infertility, a cancer diagnosis, trauma or other crisis.

With a staff that includes board certified psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and clinical nurse specialists, we have the expertise needed to diagnose, treat and manage a wide range of psychiatric conditions before, during and after a woman’s pregnancy.

Our services include: • The Day Hospital, the nation’s first psychiatric partial hospital treating pregnant

women and new mothers with depression, anxiety or other emotional distress, and their babies in a warm, nurturing setting.

• Consultation liaison services, with a team of staff psychiatrists, psychologists and clinical nurse specialists who are available 24 hours a day.

• Outpatient services, where we specialize in psychotheraphy and medication

treatment for women who have mood and anxiety disorders that are related to pregnancy, the postpartum period, or pregnancy loss.

Center for Women’s Behavioral Health (cont’d) Cynthia Battle, PhD, is a research psychologist in the Center for Women’s Behavioral Health and an associate professor of psychiatry and human behavior (research) at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Battle is also on the staff at Butler Hospital.

Shannon Marie Erisman, PhD, is clinical director of the Day Hospital and a staff psychologist for the Women’s Partial Program at Butler Hospital. She is a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and human behavior at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

M. Aimee Grause, PCNS, is a clinical nurse specialist with extensive experience in psychiatric inpatient and partial hospital settings. Ms. Grause is a certified therapist and supervisor in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), with a particular focus on treating women with perinatal psychiatric disorders. She has training in mindfulness meditation practice and incorporates this and her interest in the arts in the therapeutic milieu of the Day Hospital.

Jane Hesser, LICSW, is a clinical social worker at the Center for Women’s Behavioral Health. She earned her masters degree in clinical social work at Simmons College in Boston, a masters degree in fine arts in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design, and a collegiate teaching certificate from Brown University’s Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning.

Margaret Howard, PhD, is the division director of the Center for Women’s Behavioral Health, associate fellowship director for the Brown University/Women & Infants Hospital Women’s Mental Health Fellowship, and a professor of psychiatry and human behavior (clinical) and medicine (clinical) at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Neha Hudepohl, MD, is the fellowship director of the Brown University/Women & Infants Hospital Women’s Mental Health Fellowship. She is an attending psychiatrist in the Center for Women’s Behavioral Health and an assistant professor of psychiatry and human behavior (clinical) at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Jessica Pineda, MD, sees patients at both the Center for Primary Care and the Center for Women’s Behavioral Health. She is a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and completed residency in psychiatry and family medicine at the University of Cincinnati. She is board certified in family medicine and board eligible in psychiatry.

Kristin Wedel, LCSW, is a clinical care coordinator in the Day Hospital. A graduate of Bethel College in North Newton, KS, Kristin earned her masters in social work from Boston University. After working for years with homeless youth with HIV/AIDS, Kristin trained and was hired at Butler Hospital, providing services to patients in the CBT/DBT partial hospital programs, with a particular focus on women’s mental health.

Center for Women’s Gastrointestinal Health Women & Infants’ Center for Women’s Gastrointestinal Health offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary focus on problems with the gastrointestinal system of women. We treat women for all major diseases and conditions of the intestine and liver, including:

Understanding the importance of providing emotional support, we also offer a monthly support group for women suffering from inflammatory bowel disease.

We offer colonoscopy and endoscopy services exclusively for women. Our all-female staff treats only women, offering the highest level of comfort and expertise. The peace and privacy we provide is a welcome option for colorectal cancer screening and prevention, as well as other endoscopic services.

Nancy Botelho, NP, is a registered nurse practitioner with the Women & Infants Center for Women’s Gastrointestinal Health and an adjunct professor in the Department of Nursing at the University of Rhode Island. She leads the monthly support group for women with Crohn’s and Colitis.

Christy Dibble, DO, is director of the Women & Infants Center for Women’s Gastrointestinal Health and chairs the Women & Infants Multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Tumor Board. She is a clinical assistant professor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and is board certified in gastroenterology.

Mariam Fayek, MD, is a gastroenterologist at the Center for Women’s Gastrointestinal Health. She is a clinical assistant professor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and is board certified in gastroenterology.

Nnenna Okpara, MD, is a gastroenterologist at the Center for Women’s Gastrointestinal Health. She is a clinical assistant professor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.

Endocrine Consultation and Bone Health Program Osteoporosis is a major health issue for women, especially those over age 50.

Women & Infants’ Center for Women’s Medicine offers endocrine consultation services for pregnant and non-pregnant patients, as well as bone density testing and education.

Our endocrine consultation provider: Kenneth Chen, MD, is the director of the Division of Obstetric and Consultative Medicine. Research at the Center for Women’s Medicine Women & Infants Hospital is one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious research facilities for women and newborns. Under the leadership of Caron Zlotnick, PhD, the researchers at Women & Infants’ Center for Women’s Medicine have received grant funding from numerous agencies and foundations, including the National Institutes of Health, the Center for AIDS Research and the Rhode Island Foundation.

Caron Zlotnick, PhD, is the director of research for the Department of Medicine at Women & Infants Hospital. Dr. Zlotnick is a professor (research) at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in the departments of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is also an honorary professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town. Dr. Zlotnick’s primary focus is intervention research related to perinatal depression, interpersonal violence, substance use, and post-traumatic stress disorder, especially among high-risk and financially-disadvantaged women. She has been principal investigator or joint principal investigator on more than 20 federally-funded grants. She has also published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles. Dr. Zlotnick’s most recent published study demonstrated the efficacy of an intervention to reduce the risk of postpartum depression within six months post-delivery in 205 pregnant women on public assistance; the only study to date that has demonstrated this significant finding in a randomized study with adult women. Dr. Zlotnick has been awarded more than $2.5 million in new grant funding over the past three years from NIH for her research (of which $2.1 million is for research at Women & Infants Hospital).

Cynthia Battle, PhD, is a psychologist at Butler Hospital and Women & Infants Hospital. She is an associate professor (research), Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Warren Alpert Medical School. Dr. Battle specializes in women’s mental health, specifically depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder occurring during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

She has conducted several federally-funded studies focused on developing new non-pharmacologic treatments for perinatal women, including interventions that utilize yoga, physical activity and home-based family treatment. She has numerous peerreviewed journal publications and has presented her work and related contributions at more than 80 national and international conferences regarding the treatment of mental health disorders in perinatal women. At any given time, Dr. Battle is the principal investigator or co-investigator of multiple National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded grants.

Shannon Erisman, PhD, is the clinical director of the Day Hospital in the Center for Women’s Behavioral Health within the Department of Medicine at Women & Infants Hospital, a staff psychologist for the Women’s Partial Program at Butler Hospital, and a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and human behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School.

Dr. Erisman’s current research interests include outcomes and mechanisms of third wave behavior therapies, particularly in the treatment of women with borderline personality disorder. She is also involved in ongoing studies examining psychosisproneness, emotional processing, and cognitive flexibility with a particular focus on women’s mental health.

Erica Hardy, MD, MA, MMSc, is board certified in internal medicine, pediatrics and infectious diseases. She is an attending physician in obstetric and consultative medicine and infectious diseases at Women & Infants Hospital.

Dr. Hardy is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and assistant professor of obstetric medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School. Dr. Hardy’s research and clinical interests include infectious disease issues in obstetric and gynecologic patients, including congenital infection, complicated sexually transmitted infections, as well as outcomes, post-exposure prophylaxis and follow-up care of sexual assault survivors. She has been awarded two funded grants from the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) as the principal investigator. Dr. Hardy’s research explores the genital mucosal characteristics with respect to cytokines, anti-HIV activity, and antimicrobials in adult women survivors of sexual violence. In addition, Dr. Hardy is a joint principal investigator to evaluate the impact of different longacting progestin contraceptive formulations on the vaginal microbiome. Dr. Hardy is an active member of the Rhode Island Statewide Task Force to Address Adult Sexual Assault.

Margaret Howard, PhD, is the division director of the Center for Women’s Behavioral Health. Dr. Howard is a professor of psychiatry and human behavior (clinical) and medicine (clinical) at the Warren Alpert Medical School.

She is associate fellowship director for the Brown University/Women & Infants Hospital Women’s Mental Health Fellowship. Dr. Howard‘s primary clinical and research interests are perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, their impact on maternal attachment, trauma, and design and implementation of perinatal mother-baby units. Dr. Howard has been a co-investigator on several NIH-funded grants and is currently a co-investigator on a NIHfunded study that examines the treatment decisions of perinatal women with bipolar disorder. She is currently co-investigator on a treatment outcome study examining the effectiveness of partial hospital treatment for pregnant and postpartum women. Dr. Howard lectures nationally and internationally on the topic of perinatal mood disorders, and is frequently sought out for media interviews to discuss the Women & Infants’ Perinatal Psychiatric Mother-Baby Unit.

Neha Hudepohl, MD, is the fellowship director of the Brown University/Women & Infants Hospital Women’s Mental Health Fellowship. She is an attending psychiatrist in the Center for Women’s Behavioral Health and an assistant professor of psychiatry and human behavior (clinical) at the Warren Alpert Medical School.

Dr. Hudepohl’s primary academic interests include women’s mental health, trauma, pharmacotherapy in pregnancy and lactation, and medical education. Dr. Hudepohl is currently the co-investigator of an NIH-funded grant entitled, “Adjunctive Psychotherapy for Perinatal Bipolar Disorder.” She is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Rhode Island Psychiatric Association. She has written various book chapters and articles in professional journals, including a chapter on antipsychotics for the “Handbook of Clinical Neurology.”

Niharika Mehta, MD, is the director of ambulatory services and director of the Specialty Care in Pregnancy Program (SCIPP) in the Department of Medicine at Women & Infants Hospital. She is an associate professor of medicine (clinical) at the Warren Alpert Medical School. Her current research interests include proteinuria and C-difficile in pregnancy as well as the implications of D-Dimer values and BNP levels in the pregnant population.

Dr. Mehta is currently a co-investigator on an industry-funded study entitled, “D-Dimer Levels during Pregnancy.”

She is also a consultant on a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation entitled, “Pregnancy and Neurology: Safeguarding Moms and Babies” for her expertise in obstetric medicine. She is the obstetric medicine interest group representative of the Women and Medicine Task Force of the Society of General Internal Medicine. She is currently the website coordinator for the International Society for Obstetric Medicine. Her most recent peerreviewed publications include “Fontan circulation: implications for future reproduction” and “Respiratory disease in pregnancy” in Reproductive Immunology: Open Access.
