PLUS... Recipes, puzzles, the Book Club, and much much more!

Interview with CareCo ambassador, model, radio host Ruth Telford

elcome once again to CareCo Life.

Wow – what a response to our first issue! It’s been lovely to hear such positive feedback, and to see the pictures sent in of you enjoying the early summer sunshine.

This month, I’ve discovered just how many of the UK’s most popular trails are tackled by people using walking aids. Adventure awaits! And on that topic, make sure you read Ruth’s interview on page 9. Her perspective on modelling, mobility aids and staying active is genuinely enlightening.

We’re also now a Disability Confident Leader, something I’m really chuffed about! Find out more about that on page 38.

And you have to try the sausage roll recipe. To say I’m not a baker is an understatement, but I gave these a go and they came out brilliantly! Good enough for a Hollywood handshake, if I do say so myself.

Summer’s here (sort of, this is Britain after all…) and we’ll help you make the most of it.

Staying safe

But there’s still a lack of clarity around where mobility scooters are allowed. The rules remain a grey area – and it’s something our teams in CareCo showrooms get asked about time and time again.

If you’re unsure where mobility scooters fit into the UK’s road system, here are a few key things to keep in mind.

1. Know your class

Mobility scooters fall into two legal categories. Knowing which one you have makes all the difference when it comes to where you can go:

• Class 2 scooters: Designed for pavement use only, with a top speed of 4mph. They’re ideal for local trips.

• Class 3 scooters: Road-legal and can travel up to 8mph (though they must be switched to 4mph when on the pavement). They must be fitted with a horn, front and rear lights, reflectors, indicators and a rear-view mirror –and registered with the DVLA.

Class 3 scooters are also permitted on dual carriageways if they have the correct lights (although it’s advised to avoid roads with speed limits over 50mph!) Cycle lanes and bus lanes are off-limits for all mobility scooters.

For many people mobility scooters are a vital part of daily life. Offering freedom and independence, they help users stay connected to their communities and carry out essential errands. Essential road and pavement safety for mobility scooter users

2. Pavements are the safest choice

If you’re riding a Class 2 scooter or using a Class 3 scooter in pedestrian areas, stay on the left and keep to a steady walking pace – 4mph maximum. In shops, stations or crowded zones, going even slower, around 3mph, is safer and more considerate.

3. If you must use the road...

Follow the same rules as any other road user: Obey traffic signals, indicate clearly and make yourself visible. High-vis clothing, reflectors and working front and rear lights are essential. If you’re riding on a dual carriageway (under 50mph), a flashing amber beacon is a legal requirement.

4. Shops, stations and pedestrian zones

Most mobility scooters are welcome in pedestrianised areas and large retail spaces, but policies can vary. Some transport providers still restrict scooter access, so always check in advance if you’re planning to use a bus or train.

5. Get covered

Though insurance isn’t required by law, it’s strongly recommended. It can protect you from costs related to theft, damage or accidents.

Ruth Telford began her modelling career in her 50s, after decades as a full-time mum. Since then, she’s graced advertising campaigns, appeared on hit shows like Coronation Street and Emmerdale, and even hosted her own local radio chat show.

Taking a moment between shoots and family life, we caught up with Ruth to talk about ageing confidently, shifting attitudes to mobility, and why reinvention is the key to staying happy and healthy.

Hi Ruth! Can you tell us a bit about yourself – how old are you, and how long have you been modelling?

I’m in my 60s now, and I’ve been modelling for just over ten years. I came to it later in life, after spending twenty years as a full-time mum. Once the last of my kids moved out, someone asked me what I was going to do with my time and I thought, well, I always wanted to act when I was younger. A friend gave me her agent’s number, and the rest just snowballed from there.

How did that leap from supporting artist to full-blown modelling career happen?

It was quite natural, really. I started off doing background work, TV, small adverts, and bit by bit I built a portfolio.

What keeps me going today is the variety. I’ve never done the same job twice. One week it’s a beachside photo shoot, the next it’s a supporting artist in the Netflix show Adolescence, then a live interview on TV.

What’s it like working in the modelling and advertising industry now as a more mature model?

It’s changed a lot, especially since COVID. The pandemic really accelerated things in terms of inclusivity. There’s more diversity now, age, size, background. It’s a good thing.

Saying that, the amount of work can drop off a bit as you get older, so you have to stay proactive and open to different roles.

Have you seen a shift in how age and mobility are represented in advertising?

Definitely. Ten years ago, you wouldn’t see many older faces in mainstream campaigns, and if you did, it was always the same narrow image. Now there’s a bigger push to show real people and that includes people using mobility aids. It’s no longer taboo.

You’ve worked on several campaigns with CareCo – what’s stood out to you most?

The shoot we did down on the coast, I think it was Weymouth, was probably my favourite. It was a red-hot summer, we were working with a lovely cast and crew, there were colourful beach huts, laughter, proper camaraderie.

I remember nipping round the corner to a greengrocer on a mobility scooter. It just felt so natural and full of joy.

Has working with CareCo changed how you view mobility aids?

Massively. Before, I thought you had to be really old and struggling to need that kind of support. But that’s not true at all.

You might just have a bad back or need help getting comfy in bed – I’ve got one of their riser beds at home and it’s brilliant. Helps me avoid aches and lets me watch telly in bed properly!

Do you think there’s still a stigma attached to using mobility products?

There is, but it’s shifting. People are becoming more open-minded, and campaigns like CareCo’s help normalise the conversation. It’s not about giving in to age, it’s about supporting your independence. I wish more people realised that sooner.

What would you say to someone considering adapting their home for comfort or future needs?

Go into a CareCo showroom. Honestly, I’ve worked around a few of the showrooms now and the staff are fantastic. The shops are welcoming, and the team helps you figure out what suits your lifestyle best. It’s not a one-size-fits-all thing.

Stay cool!

Protect yourself in the heat

Summer in the UK can be temperamental at best, but with the UK reaching temperatures of 28°C already this year, there’s hope that the sun will shine across the holiday months.

Older adults and children tend to be more vulnerable to heat, and while warm weather is often welcomed it can cause issues such as the inability to regulate body temperature. Read on for a few tips on making the most of your summer without putting yourself at risk when temperatures climb.

Hydrate

Hopefully you’re already well aware of the benefits of increasing your water intake. But when you’re out and about, it’s not always easy to make sure you’re drinking enough. Taking a big water bottle out with you can make a world of

difference on longer scooter journeys – as can avoiding caffeine and alcohol (they dry you out!).

Keeping cool at home

Hot weather outside can creep into the home too and can make even staying inside feel more uncomfortable. Keep your curtains closed to stop rooms trapping heat, because while it’s nice to get light into your rooms, it can become more uncomfortable as the day goes on. This is especially true for bedrooms where it can become more difficult to sleep at night.

Dress appropriately

T-shirts and shorts feel like the best option, but they do leave your skin exposed. Think about wearing breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen so that you can still feel comfortable and as mobile as possible. And while it seems like fairly obvious advice to recommend wearing a hat to protect yourself, think carefully

about the colour because that can affect how well protected you are from UV rays. Black by its very nature absorbs sunlight which can make black clothes, or hats, feel warmer.

Getting out and about

Part of enjoying the pleasant weather is being able to get out and about, whether that’s in your garden, or taking a trip to the shops. Try and visit places where you know there will be air conditioning, and that won’t be too busy to stop an excess of bodies generating more heat! While the beach could be a better destination, being away from home means that you need to prepare before you go, and alongside the usual suncream and shade, it’s worth having a bag ready with all your essentials– including that new big water bottle you’ve just bought.

Risks of hot weather

We all love to embrace the hot weather, but it’s not without its risks. Dehydration can make you feel genuinely uncomfortable and can even be dangerous in certain situations. If you feel like you’re sweating profusely, or feel weak or nauseous, seek immediate help because these are signs of heat exhaustion. Similarly, a high body temperature, confusion and lack of sweat could also be signs of heat stroke, which is a medical emergency, so seek

immediate help even if it feels like initial stages. Have emergency contacts ready to go and try and have company on any trips out where possible.

Enjoy the sun!

Whilst you might need to avoid peak hours of sunshine, there’s no reason that without a plan and some suncream you can’t enjoy the natural light.. If you’re lucky enough to have air conditioning, then use it where possible and take a cool shower or bath if you need it. Even a cold flannel can help cool you down – simple things can make a huge difference. Stay safe and enjoy the sun!

Popular and accessible walks across the UK

If you’ve got mobility needs, then you’ll understand better than most the value of fresh air and the benefit on both your mental and physical wellbeing.

Accessible walks aren’t just for those who need a mobility scooter, but also for parents with pushchairs, those in wheelchairs and those who use walking sticks.

Accessing the outdoors isn’t necessarily easy for anyone with a mobility or health need, so we’ve put together

a useful guide that showcases some of the beautiful routes the UK has to offer.

With the weather hopefully beginning to cheer up over the summer months, (no guarantees, this is the UK after all), there’s no better time to get out and about on some of the UK’s most accessible walks.

Four of the best

Accessible walks across the UK

Sizergh, Cumbria

Part of the Lake District’s Miles without Stiles campaign, this 1.2-mile path is suitable for anyone who uses mobility aids. While there are moderate inclines, it’s still possible to have an enjoyable and accessible journey. Holeslack access trail is designed for anyone who needs an easy way to get out and about but still notes that there could be challenges for those with attended propelled wheelchairs.

There’s also an accessible toilet at the entrance of the visitor centre. A truly nature-fuelled walk, you’ll see some fantastic views and get to experience some exceptional beauty as you go around.

Blakeney Freshers, Norfolk Coast Path

Norfolk County Council have tested the trail to help ensure that anyone with an accessibility need can still enjoy.

It’s a 2.5 mile linear sea-adjacent stretch of the path from Blakeney to Cley. Throughout you’ll see the salt marsh and be treated to the stunning views. Like anywhere in the UK, it’s important to be aware of the impact of weather. For example, heavy rainfall so close to the sea could mean there is risk of flooding so make sure to prepare before you plan your journey!

Orrest Head, Windermere

The Major Oak trail is referred to as the essential Sherwood Forest experience, as you’ll travel to the iconic tree and come back through the magical forest to the visitor centre. You’ll get to see ancient oak trees, and the Major Oak which Robin Hood reportedly used as a hideout. A short walk taking around 45 minutes, clocking in at 1.5 miles, you’ll be able to see the historic Major Oak in all its glory!

Just a few minutes’ from Windermere train station, Orrest Head has a specially designed accessible route with blue signs leading the way. It’s noted on the official Lake District website that mobility scooters need to be class 2 or 3 on this route due to some slightly steeper areas. Going through Elleray Wood, you travel to the peak to be greeted with stunning views of Windermere.

Treka 2-in-1 Hiking Walking Stick

Our walking sticks give you the confidence to tackle any route that you’re able to while staying steady on your feet.

You don’t need a health condition to use a walking stick, and they can be hugely beneficial for both balance and support – even better, modern walking sticks fold up small enough to fit in a backpack!

Trusted Trader

Meet the installer: Why trust starts at the doorstep

Letting someone into your home to install equipment that could change your quality of life requires trust. At CareCo, that trust starts with our people, like David Dunnett.

David’s only been with CareCo for six months, but he’s already travelled across the country delivering everything from mobility scooters to riser recliner chairs. “A typical day can start at 5 am, depending on where I’m headed,” he says. “Every day is different, what’s in the van, where I’m going, and how easy it is to access the property.”

Sometimes, that access can be a challenge. “Once, I had to get a chair upstairs, but there was a stairlift in the way. It took a bit of creative thinking to get it sorted.”

What David values most, though, is the human connection. “Most customers love a chat. They’ve all got stories, and I’m always happy to listen. Even just a few minutes of company can really brighten someone’s day.”

That personal approach is key to why CareCo is a Which? Trusted Trader.

“You always ask before entering – it’s their home, and that respect matters,”

David adds.

Before each visit, safety checks are done, calls are made, and expectations are set. “It helps put customers at ease, especially those who might be nervous or need a bit more time.”

And it’s that care that makes us a Which? Trusted Trader for servicing, installation and repairs.

How to identify scams

There’s no doubt that technology is becoming increasingly advanced. And that gives scammers who prey on vulnerable people a huge advantage.

These are the things that you need to be aware of to ensure that you don’t fall victim to some of these unscrupulous practices.

Pretending to be a family member with a new number

No-one wants to see a family member, or friend, in distress, and scammers play on this because they know it’s an emotional connection that they can exploit. If you get a text from someone claiming to be a family member who has changed numbers, they may not immediately ask for money, but be wary, and check with the family member or friend on their usual number, or face to face if you can.

Romance scams

Sadly, romance scams are effective for scammers because they exploit people who feel like they have a genuine connection with somebody, but these people aren’t who they seem to be. Whether it’s on social media, or via text, they often will give you a sob story, and in time start asking for money. Be wary of anyone you have never met, because people use other people’s identity to make you believe that they can be trusted.

Protecting yourself

If someone sends you something out of the blue, and it has a link in it, do not click it. Unknown attachments can be riddled with viruses so it’s important to ensure that you’re protecting yourself.

Ultimately, you need to be sceptical when anyone who you’re not familiar with contacts you, especially if it comes to your personal details. Being wary and on-guard might feel uncomfortable, but many of these scammers prey on people’s politeness to get them to act in an unconsidered way. Stay safe!

And the winner is...

A quarter of a century ago, the world watched in awe as the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games brought unforgettable drama, sporting triumphs and a renewed sense of global unity.

For many Brits, the games marked a turning point — not just for Team GB, but for a national sporting culture that would go on to embrace Olympic excellence in the years that followed. The Sydney Games gave us defining moments: Cathy Freeman’s emotional

400m victory, Steve Redgrave’s fifth gold medal in rowing, and Denise Lewis’s unforgettable heptathlon triumph. But perhaps more significantly, the games helped re-establish Britain’s place on the world stage in sport, paving the way for the successes of Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, and that glorious homecoming in London 2012.

Now, 25 years on, we look back not just at the medals, but at the enduring legacy — a generation inspired, a funding system revolutionised, and a renewed respect for the discipline and dignity of sport. The Sydney Games weren’t just a moment in time; they were the catalyst for a new era.

So, take a moment, if you can, to relive the highlights, honour the athletes, and remember the Games that helped shape British sporting pride in the 21st century.

300g sausage meat (or good-quality sausages with skins removed)

75g cooking chorizo, finely chopped

1 tsp fennel seeds

1 small garlic clove, finely grated (optional)

1 tsp smoked paprika (optional, boosts the chorizo flavour)

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Sea salt and black pepper

Whether homemade sausage rolls, nutritious salads or ‘build-your-own’ lunches, Josh’s focus is always on fresh, tasty food with a bit of personality. Josh has 15 years of experience working in award-winning restaurants across Essex, so who better to bring us an easy and delicious recipe perfect for summer picnics and parties?

Method

1. Preheat oven to 200°C (fan 180°C) / 400°F / Gas 6.

2. In a bowl, mix the sausage meat, chopped chorizo, fennel seeds. Add in the garlic and smoked paprika if you’re using. Season with a little salt and plenty of black pepper.

3. Unroll the puff pastry sheet and cut in half lengthways to create two long strips.

4. Divide the sausage mixture into two and form into long sausage shapes down the centre of each pastry strip.

5. Brush one edge of each strip with beaten egg. Fold the pastry over the meat and press to seal. Crimp with a fork or press with fingers for a rustic edge.

6. Slice into desired roll sizes (mini or large), place on a lined baking tray, seam-side down.

7. Brush the tops with egg wash and lightly score the tops if you like.

8. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden and cooked through.

Book Club

Our second issue also brings our second book club! Bringing together favourite reads from across the CareCo team, we’ve got another great collection of recommendations for you once again.

Delving deep into her characters, Sally Rooney delivers her 4th novel following the success of books such as Normal People. In a world of grief that two brothers share following the death of their dad, they share family bonds but very different coping mechanisms. In Intermezzo, feuding, dealing with addiction, and navigating romantic relationships are all part and parcel

of the story. It’s a sad and sometimes challenging read that looks not only at the relationships with partners, but relationships within families –yet it still manages to captivate without ever feeling too heavy. Addressing complex connections that families often can share, Intermezzo is a read for anyone who enjoys real character development.

Have you read Intermezzo? Do you agree with our review? Got book recommendations for us? We want to hear from you! Let us know your thoughts by emailing life@careco.co.uk

How we’re making a difference at CareCo

Whether it’s going the extra mile for our customers, looking out for our colleagues or looking after our environment, caring is what we’re all about.

We’ve made real investments into how we manage our packaging, with specialist machinery that allows us to recycle used materials into new ones, reducing waste and cutting down on our environmental footprint. We also conduct a full carbon audit each year to keep ourselves accountable and ensure we’re doing everything we can to limit emissions across our operations.

But sustainability isn’t just about systems and numbers. It’s about taking action.

Recently, members of our CSR team got stuck in with the Essex Forest Initiative, volunteering their time to

help plant trees. These trees will go on to support wildlife, improve air quality, and contribute to long-term climate resilience. It’s a small step, but one that adds up.

With a growing footprint that includes our headquarters in Essex, distribution centres in Dudley and Leeds, and 35 showrooms across the UK (with more on the way), we know that responsible growth must go hand in hand with environmental stewardship.

We’ve already made meaningful changes – from replacing all LPG forklifts with electric models, to rolling out solar PV systems across our sites, and launching an eco EHS Management solution with EcoOnline to help us track, measure and improve safety and sustainability performance. We’ve also partnered with leading carbon consultancy Auditel who help organisations reduce emissions and achieve carbon neutrality. Carbon neutrality means cutting down carbon emissions as much as possible, then balancing out what’s left by supporting projects that help remove carbon from the atmosphere.

We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far, from smarter logistics to greener materials and robust waste management processes, but we know this is just the beginning. Sustainability at CareCo is not a destination, but a journey. Because real care doesn’t stop at our customers, it extends to the world we all share.

An Occupational Therapist’s guide to correctly using a wheelchair.

As the days grow longer and the weather warms up, most of us are looking to spend more time outdoors. For wheelchair users, that means making sure your chair is up to the task.

Whether you use one every day, occasionally, or are just beginning to explore your options, choosing the right wheelchair can make all the difference to your independence, safety and confidence. Occupational Therapist Natasha Bruce-Jones shares her expert advice on what to consider before getting out and about this summer.

Match your chair to your lifestyle

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to wheelchairs. “Every recommendation I make depends on the user’s body, home layout, daily routines and even psychological needs,” Natasha says. “I look at posture, strength, coordination, sight, skin integrity – even how someone transfers in and out of their chair.”

Before you choose, think about how you plan to use it; Are you moving under your own power or relying on someone else? Will it be used indoors, outdoors, or both? Do you need to lift it into a car or fold it away for travel?

Answering these questions will help you decide between a transit chair, self-propelled model or powered wheelchair – and what features matter most to your routine.

Understand how different chairs move

Some chairs are designed to be pushed by an attendant. Others are self-propelled

with push rims or powered by battery.

“Some people even use their feet to move the chair, which works well in smaller rooms or narrow doorways”

Natasha explains.

If you’re going the self-propelled route, think about strength and range of motion.

“The further back the wheels are set, the more shoulder extension you’ll need,” she adds. For easier reach and efficiency, look for models with adjustable wheel positions – like the Ventor Sport, designed for smoother propulsion with less effort.

Top tip: If you’re new to using a chair on your own, start with a model that includes attendant handles, like the CareCo Ergo Pro, so someone can step in when needed.

Prioritise safety and comfort

“Even small details – like how your feet rest – can affect posture and pressure distribution,” Natasha warns. If you’re using a transit chair, make sure your assistant knows how to tackle kerbs and

ramps properly. “Always go down level changes backwards and never skip the footplates – they keep you stable and protect your back.” Consider add-ons too. A battery pack like the S-Drive Dual Powerstroll can give your assistant a boost on hills or long trips. “It’s a game-changer for energy levels and reduces strain for carers.” For powered chairs, control is everything. Joystick-operated models like the iCONNECT Zora Carbon offer intuitive handling, even for those with limited grip. But safety still comes first.

Personalise your set-up

Accessories can make a huge difference. Whether it’s a cushion to prevent pressure sores, elevating leg rests to help with circulation, or a walking stick holder to support mixed mobility needs. “These aren’t just extras, they’re essentials for many users,” Natasha says.

Your OT can help customise your chair for stability and comfort. For example,

Meet Natasha

Natasha Bruce-Jones is a member of the British Association of Occupational Therapists and brings 24 years of experience in helping people navigate daily life with greater ease. From sitting comfortably and walking safely to enjoying a restful night’s sleep, she understands the vital role that the right mobility aids play in improving somebody’s life.

if you’ve had an amputation or surgery, you may need a stump board or extended wheelbase for balance.

“Identity matters too,” she adds. “The more a chair feels like ‘you’, the more confident and independent you’ll feel using it.”

Know your options – from NHS vouchers to hiring

While the NHS may offer a basic wheelchair, you don’t always have to settle. “Ask about the voucher scheme, which lets you put NHS funding towards a chair that’s right for you,” Natasha advises.

If your need is temporary or short-term, wheelchair hire might be a cost-effective option – just bear in mind that specialist accessories may not be included.

It gave me the freedom to move on my own when I can, but also the peace of mind that Tom could step in if I needed him to. “

Grace’s Story

Grace, a data specialist from Sheffield, was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in her early twenties after years of chronic pain. Now 29, she lives with her partner Tom and their baby daughter, Margo. Despite juggling work, parenting and running a small business, Grace was determined to find the right support to improve her daily life.

I never felt ‘disabled enough’ to use a wheelchair,” Grace explains. “But over time, my health got worse, and I realised I needed help to stay mobile.”

Once Grace had a diagnosis, it gave her the confidence to explore mobility aids.

She visited her local CareCo showroom in Sheffield to see what options were available and to try things for herself.

“I needed to feel it and see how it would work for me in real life,” she says.

Grace was looking for something practical but also personal. Sheffield’s notoriously cobbled and hilly streets required finding a chair with sturdy wheels and flexibility.

After trying a few options in the showroom – and even taking one for a spin – Grace chose the X8 High Active, a self-propelled wheelchair with rear handles for when she needs extra support.

“It gave me the freedom to move on my own when I can, but also the peace of mind that Tom could step in if I needed him to.”

Grace also added personal touches to the wheelchair to make it her own – orange spoke covers, matching push rim holders, and patches to reflect her personality. “The more I customised it, the more it felt like me,” she says.

Since bringing the X8 home, Grace and Tom have made the most of their new freedom. One of their first adventures was climbing a hill that Grace had never thought possible. “It was a big moment for me. That chair made something happen I didn’t think I’d ever do again.”

Outside of work, Grace runs Disabled Dolly, a small business creating mobility aids for dolls to improve disability representation in toys. She’s also a disabled model and

speaks openly about the importance of visibility and accessible design.

“This wheelchair really changed my life,” she says, “If you’ve got a CareCo showroom nearby – just go. Try things out. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

For Grace, finding the right wheelchair has brought more than just physical support, it’s brought confidence, freedom, and peace of mind.

We’re so grateful to Grace for sharing her story with us.

The chance to change somebody’s life for the better is an absolute privilege –one we never take for granted.

Would you like to share your story with us?

As a thank you, we’ll give you £500 towards your next CareCo purchase or a £250 M&S voucher.

Date of experience: 29 May 2025

Very impressed. My husband did a bit of research for a rollator that would suit me and fold up small enough to fit into the boot of the car it. Looked like the CareCo Comet rollator would fit the bill and was on offer in the sale at a good price. We went to the Stevenage showroom, where we were met on entry by Reiss, who demonstrated the rollator, which was just what was needed. He showed how it worked and I had a stroll around the showroom. Reiss showed how the Comet folded down to a very compact item and then my husband folded it and unfolded it again.
