Welcome

Welcome back!

It’s hard to believe we’re already on our third issue. Autumn has arrived, the leaves are turning, the evenings are drawing in, and the smell of pumpkin spice is everywhere (Imali, we know you’re a fan!).

This issue is packed with ideas for keeping cosy, staying independent, and finding joy in the small everyday moments. Not to mention plenty of inspiration – you have to read about Ian’s incredible journey skyward with Flying Scholarships for Disabled People!

Grab a comfy blanket, make yourself a decent cuppa, and settle into your favourite riser recliner. Here’s to autumn – may yours be full of warmth, good company, and plenty of biscuits!

More independence for less

Staying warm and saving smart this season

There’s something magical about autumn, golden leaves, crisp morning air, and the promise of cosy evenings ahead. But as the nights draw in, we all start thinking about keeping warm, preparing for Christmas, and making our money go a little further. The good news is, with a few simple changes, you can enjoy the season without feeling the pinch – and without giving up your independence.

Cosy up without cranking up the heating

Heating bills can creep up quickly in winter, but there are ways to stay snug without blowing the budget. A bit of draught-proofi ng can work wonders; self-adhesive strips for doors and windows are cheap and quick to fi t, and thick curtains help keep that precious warmth indoors. Pop on an extra jumper, wrap up in a blanket, and you might even fi nd you can turn the thermostat down a notch.

for example, means less strain when you’re out and about, and a comfy adjustable chair can make relaxing at home even better. At CareCo we’re all about helping you stay active and independent, with products designed to make life simpler and more enjoyable, all year round.

Keep moving, keep smiling

Christmas magic, minus the overspend

It’s easy to get swept up in the sparkle of the festive season, but planning ahead really does help. Start your gift list early and set a budget you’re happy with. Thoughtful presents, especially things that make daily life easier or more enjoyable, often mean far more than something expensive. And if you keep an eye out for pre-Christmas sales, you might just grab a bargain or two. Little changes that make life easier

Shorter days can make it tempting to stay indoors, but gentle activity keeps you feeling good, and can even save a bit of money. Walking to the local shops instead of taking the car is a great way to get some fresh air. If you’re using a mobility aid, make sure it’s ready for winter, check tyres and consider adding lights or reflectors for darker afternoons.

the simple things

Sometimes, the right piece of equipment can help you save energy in more ways than one. A lightweight rollator,

Sometimes, the best winter moments are the simple ones: a warm drink, your favourite chair, and the satisfaction of knowing you’re looking after yourself – and your budget. With a little planning and a few smart choices, you can stay warm, celebrate the season, and keep enjoying life on your own terms.

warmers & risers Winter

When the nights draw in and the temperatures drop, comfort becomes more than just a luxury, it’s a necessity. Here’s how you can find it:

Deluxe Fleece Support Pillow

Sometimes it’s the little things that transform your downtime. Orthopaedically shaped for your lumbar area, this plush support pillow makes sitting more comfortable, whether you’re working, reading or simply unwinding. With a faux sheepskin side for winter and a cooler polyester finish for summer, it’s as practical as it is indulgent.

MaxiComfort Relaxer

If sinking into a chair could be an art form, the MaxiComfort would perfect it. Generously padded, with dual motors for customised positioning, it offers heat, massage and effortless support. Tilt back, lift your legs and let the stresses of the day melt away –this is comfort, fine-tuned.

Senza Heated Cushion

A chic faux-fur cushion with a secret: hidden inside is a rechargeable heating pad with three cosy settings. The Senza Heated Cushion takes the sting out of cold evenings, heating up in minutes and lasting for over an hour on the highest setting. It’s portable, stylish and – fair warning – your cat may claim it before you do.

Aster Fireside Chair

With its timeless silhouette and thick cushioning, the Aster fireside chair looks every bit as good as it feels. Discreetly designed to support where you need it most – back, knees and neck – it’s a modern classic that blends seamlessly into your living room. Proof that style and comfort needn’t be a compromise.

Q&A

with Imali Chislett

An award-winning entrepreneur & disability advocate

Hi Imali! Can you introduce yourself to our lovely readers?

Hello! I’m Imali, a 24-year-old disabled entrepreneur and blogger, based in Dorset. I’ve been chronically ill for many years, with a range of conditions from hearing loss to ulcerative colitis with a stoma bag. I’m super colourful and love being creative.

What do you think of accessibility in the UK in 2025?

It’s definitely better than it used to be, but there’s still a long way to go! Unfortunately, access is so often dictated by somebody who isn’t in need of an aid, meaning that they miss the mark on what will actually help. However, there are notable, positive improvements coming, it’s just taking its time!

You spoke in the House of Lords in July this year. How did that come about, and how can people help amplify your message?

I was lucky enough to mentor last year with Small Business Britain’s Small & Mighty programme, so when the opportunity arose to get involved in the Lilac Review speeches about disabled entrepreneurship, I couldn’t pass it up. The key takeaway of my speech was that disabled people shouldn’t be seen as your inspiration, we are in fact your competition and we mean business!

You speak about mobility aids a lot on your blog. Which aids do you use?

I use a wheelchair (powered and manual), walking sticks for short distances, as well as hearing aids.

What do you get up to in your spare time?

I adore Disneyland Paris – I went for the first time this June and had a wonderful time, so I’m desperately hoping to go back. I also love anything creative, so a day spend being arty with a cup of tea makes me happy!

What do you do for work?

Some of my time is spent blogging over at Mali & ME, while the other part is spent running my main business

Inkfire – a disabled-led marketing and design collaboration. We’ve had a great year, that’s been crazily busy – including winning two awards!

What would you say to someone who had recently been diagnosed with an illness or acquired a disability?

Take it a day at a time, work out what things you’re struggling with and then work backwards from there to find a solution. There’s an insane amount of advice, tools and equipment out there, but it’s really important to find what works for you. Don’t settle!

What do you think are some of your biggest challenges?

Managing my schedule around my medical needs – on the daily I have appointments, medications to collect, stoma supplies to refill, the list goes on and on. It can be really difficult to slot ‘normal’ life around these.

For those who don’t know –what is hEDS and how can we raise further awareness?

Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

– it’s a condition in which you don’t have enough collagen, meaning you’re too bendy – inside and out! It can cause a plethora of symptoms, including daily dislocations, organ issues and skin splitting. There’s no fix for it, but you can manage the condition through careful pain management and avoiding strain through using mobility aids.

Tell us about your recent travelling and what you thought about the levels of accessibility there?

It was absolutely amazing! Disneyland is very wheelchair accessible which was a breath of fresh air. Getting to go out and explore was so unique. It was definitely a big win in my books – I can’t wait to go back!

I really don’t. Basic ticket booking for events like shows held at Wembley still require such analogue booking –in the case of going to see Taylor Swift in 2024, my friend and I had to manually call the venue over 250 times, in order to get through. There’s no provision to book online if you need an access ticket –it’s infuriating!

Why do we use carbon fibre in mobility aids?

The answer lies in smart design… and even smarter travel

For anyone looking for a mobility aid, three key common concerns are comfort, weight and strength. The answer to all three? Carbon fibre.

Once reserved for high-performance sports cars and aerospace tech, carbon fibre is fast making a name for itself in the world of mobility.

The carbon fibre advantage

Lightweight but incredibly strong, carbon fi bre has revolutionised the way many mobility aids are designed and used. It allows for frames that are tough enough to handle daily life, uneven terrain, bumps, and frequent folding, but without the bulk that often comes with sturdier materials like steel or aluminium.

Carbon fi bre products weigh considerably less than their non-carbon counterparts. Take the Pride GoGo Carbon, a CareCo exclusive, this mobility scooter only

weighs 19kg, making it one of the

lightest scooters in its class – but fear not, it’s no featherweight when it comes to durability!

Strength without the strain

In practical terms, using carbon fi bre means we can make products that are easier to lift into car boots, take less effort to manoeuvre through tight spaces, and are simpler to fold or transport.

Designed for real life

Carbon fi bre is not only strong, but also incredibly resilient. It absorbs vibrations well, making it ideal for uneven

pavements or rougher outdoor terrain –on a mobility scooter, that translates into a smoother, more comfortable ride and fewer jolts to your joints on longer journeys.

It’s also corrosion-resistant, which means carbon fi bre equipment tends to last longer even with regular exposure to rain or humidity. For people who rely on their aid every day, that can make a huge difference to peace of mind and long-term value.

Lighter, sleeker, smarter

It’s about style, too. Carbon fi bre brings a sleek and modern look to mobility aids, moving them away from the clinical, medical feel that often defi nes assistive products. Mobility aids are more than just functional tools – they’re part of daily life. Lightweight, compact designs that look good and perform well are a step toward normalising and even celebrating mobility equipment rather than seeing them as compromises.

Forward-thinking design

Perhaps most importantly, carbon fi bre allows designers to think differently. The flexibility and strength of the materials allows for new shapes and confi gurations that simply weren’t possible with heavier metals. That opens the door for more compact folding mechanisms, better ergonomic support, and mobility aids that are genuinely tailored to how people move, not just how they’re expected to.

Real users, real impact

For users like Terrence, the GoGo Carbon has transformed his ability to keep up with family days out. “I can’t wait to go on days out with the family using the GoGo Carbon mobility scooter, making every trip smoother and more enjoyable!”

For Patricia, it’s made a huge difference to her feeling of freedom. “It was never easy to admit that my mobility was getting worse as I got older. This smart, easy-folding lightweight scooter has done it! I go out now, and it feels great. Folk are envious!”

To see more reviews on the CareCoexclusive GoGo Carbon from Pride, scan the QR code at the bottom of the page or visit careco.co.uk and search “GoGo Carbon”.

A smarter way to stay mobile

Carbon fi bre is more than a trend. It’s a step forward in smarter, more sustainable design. It means mobility aids like the Pride GoGo Carbon Folding Scooter can offer durability, safety, and comfort without compromise. So, if you’re looking for freedom without the faff, and performance without the weight, carbon fi bre might just be your strongest ally yet.

Navigating childcare responsibilities

as a grandparent

Becoming a grandparent is one of life’s greatest joys. Seeing your children become parents of their own and starting a whole new journey and understanding the love that comes from being a parent… but that doesn’t mean it’s without its challenges!

Demands from a modern workplace mean grandparents are being called on more and more to provide support for their grandchildren, both a blessing and a challenge. Some statistics suggest a huge 89% of grandparents are providing weekly childcare for their grandchildren –at an average of 22 hours a week. While spending time with your grandchildren sounds perfect, it’s important to consider what this responsibility entails. As a grandparent, you have experience, but you should be honest about your energy, commitments, and needs.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Before agreeing to regular childcare responsibilities, ask yourself a few key questions:

Can you afford it? Childcare will likely bring extra costs, from child-friendly snacks to activities and trips out. A trip to your local park may suffice some of the time, but cinema trips and activity centres will also be required on rainy days. Make sure to have a conversation with your adult children in advance and set expectations.

Are you ready to give up some independence?

Regular childcare, especially for grandchildren not yet in school, is a significant time commitment. It will likely mean less time for your hobbies, social life and even simple errands.

Are you physically up to it?

Keeping up with a toddler can be demanding. It might have been a while, but don’t forget how much energy your children had when they were younger! Be realistic about your mobility and stamina. Can you lift them, get down on the floor to play, chase them around the house and keep up with them for long periods?

Are you up-to-date on safety standards? Childcare guidelines have changed a lot in just the last 10 years. Familiarise yourself with modern practices, like safe sleep recommendations and car seat installation. A quick refresher can help you feel more confident and ensure your grandchild’s safety.

SETTING CLEAR BOUNDARIES

One of the most important things you can do is to set clear boundaries from the start. This isn’t about being difficult; it’s about protecting your energy and ensuring the arrangement works for everyone.

HOLD BACK ON THE ADVICE

Sometimes your advice or input may feel overlooked. Remember, your children are still building confidence as parents. The best approach is to take a step back and try to understand their perspective. Remember, you both share the goal of keeping the children safe and happy.

NAVIGATING THE RULES

When you’re babysitting for a one-off or seeing your grandchild occasionally, it can be fun to break the rules on things like sweets or screen time. Since you aren’t the primary caregiver, it can be a special treat and part of the joy of being a grandparent. However, if you’re regularly looking after your grandchild, it may be in everyone’s best interest to remember parent boundaries. This helps create consistency for the child and avoids potential conflicts. For example, if your grandchild knows they can only have one episode of a show at

home, but you let them watch two, it can cause friction for their parents later. By sticking to their rules regularly, you’re helping reinforce their healthy habits and routines, keeping treats as just that – a treat!

FINDING THE JOY IN GRANDPARENTING

We’ve made it sound like being a grandparent means you can’t have any fun! In truth, it’s one of the most rewarding parts of life. Caring for your grandchildren strengthens your bond and creates lasting memories. Your support can also be invaluable for your own children, giving them peace of mind and helping the whole family thrive.

Your role as a grandparent is what you make of it. By being honest about your abilities, setting boundaries, and communicating openly, you can ensure this new chapter is full of fun for the entire family.

for the sky Reach

In 1999, CareCo customer Ian Bennett was diagnosed with a rare, progressive neurological condition called Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia. Four years after this, at the age of 40, Ian was forced to take ill health retirement from a job he loved, working in the aerospace industry. As you can imagine, these were dark days for Ian, but just when he needed it most, a life changing opportunity came out of the blue... quite literally!

While browsing through a publication for disabled individuals, Ian came across an advert for a charity called Flying Scholarships for Disabled People (FSDP), who offer life changing aviation experiences for disabled individuals. Having worked in aerospace for 20 years and always loved anything to do with aviation, Ian didn’t hesitate to put in an application, and in 2005 was delighted to be awarded a flying scholarship.

During his fl ight training, Ian flew solo, made many friends and said he noticed while airborne, his neurological problems never came to mind, and he was as able as anybody. After his scholarship he continued to fly as a hobby and there was a buzz in his life again that had been reignited by this amazing opportunity.

There was a buzz in his life again that had been reignited by this amazing opportunity.

Ian’s debt of gratitude to this amazing charity led to him becoming a volunteer and later the charity’s fi rst disabled trustee.

Founded in memory of Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, a WWII spitfi re pilot who continued his flying career after losing both his legs in an accident, FSDP has, for over 40 years, changed hundreds of lives. The charity’s mission is to inspire disabled adults and build their confi dence, self esteem and future aspirations through the sharing and participation in life changing aviation experiences.

To apply for a scholarship, all applicants initially complete an application form which is reviewed by trustees. Up to 20 individuals are then chosen for an assessment event at RAF Cranwell for a few days. There, applicants have the chance to meet each other and spend time with trustees and mentors. They also undergo medicals, interviews,

team activities and a hangar visit where they get the opportunity to transfer into an aircraft cockpit. Following the time spent at RAF Cranwell, the scholars are selected for flying scholarships and are ‘buddied up’ with a fellow scholar or two.

The scholars then complete up to four weeks of flying training at their flying schools and stay in accessible accommodation nearby, together with their buddies. Weather permitting, they undergo daily flying training and ground school tuition. Flying aside, the whole experience can be challenging but also immensely rewarding as they adapt to living independently in a new environment. Many make lifelong friends with their buddies and the wider FSDP community to which they are welcomed as family.

Many past scholars have told the charity that on completing their scholarship, they’ve asked themselves ‘I can fly an aeroplane, what can’t I do’?

Meet the mobile servicing manager

For many CareCo customers, mobility aids are more than just products – they’re a lifeline. When something needs fixing, it’s Thomas, the mobile servicing manager, and his team who get the job done.

Thomas began in the home installation team and now oversees the servicing department. “My focus is making sure the department runs smoothly and efficiently, while delivering the best possible experience for customers,” he says. “None of what we do would be possible without the dedication of the amazing team I work alongside.”

The technicians are the face of CareCo in the field. “We carry out diagnostics and repairs, but also provide reassurance,” Thomas explains. The team handle everything from mobility scooters and powerchairs to riser recliners and bath lifts, with emergency callouts always taking priority.

Preparation is crucial before a technician even arrives. They review job sheets, check repair histories, stock their vans, and call customers to confirm arrival times. “That preparation

means fewer delays, a smoother experience, and a lot less stress for the customer,” Thomas notes.

Beyond technical skill, the team focuses on the small details to build trust. “When you walk into someone’s home, you explain who you are and why you’re there. You’re polite, respectful, and maybe offer to remove your shoes. Those gestures show you care about their space,” Thomas says. “The best part is seeing the appreciation from customers when we’ve delivered a timely and effective resolution. It’s a reminder of the real impact our work has on people’s lives.”

Thomas advises customers to treat their equipment with care, keep it clean, charge it properly, and book regular servicing. “Routine checks are what keep them safe and reliable.” Ultimately, it’s the team’s shared goal of providing the best possible experience that drives them forward.

Knowing your rights

at work with mobility issues

First things first: An employer in the UK isn’t allowed to treat you any less favourably because you have a disability. It doesn’t matter your age or experience – simply put, your disability cannot be held against you. There’s no doubt that disabilities and mobility issues can feel like a hindrance in the workplace. But all workers in the UK are protected from discrimination and unfair treatment under the Equality Act 2010, meaning employers must make reasonable adjustments from your first interaction (this can even include a job interview!)

Reasonable adjustments are defined by Acas as:

• Finding a different way to do something

• Making changes to the workplace

• Changing someone’s working arrangements

• Providing equipment, services or support

Your employers have a duty of care, and a duty to make reasonable adjustments by law.

This means that there is still a very real issue where people don’t feel confident speaking to their employer about things that are affecting them in the workplace, and we at CareCo would encourage people to speak to their managers if they need to. We’d also encourage managers to develop an open-door policy where team members can speak to them in a safe environment.

However, reasonable adjustments mean that not everything is guaranteed. For example, the cost of making an adjustment can be challenged as unreasonable, especially if the cost could damage the business. Similarly, changes which remove the essential components of a job can be challenged by an employer.

The best thing that anyone can do in a workplace is to speak up, ask for adjustments with a clear understanding of your rights, and take next steps if those requests aren’t taken into account properly. You can also seek further advice from Acas or Citizens Advice if needed.

Black and white

to technicolour:

The Swinging Sixties

Few decades are as remembered and romanticised as the 1960s. The postwar boom saw a rise in youth culture and a fresh wave of creativity. The miniskirt was born, pirate radio broke broadcasting rules, and the space race captured imaginations. But at the centre of it all was the music, a vibrant soundtrack to a rapidly changing world. The decade gave us a seismic shift in sound. The Beatles conquered America with a string of era-defining anthems, while The Rolling Stones pushed rock and blues into grittier, darker territory. The so-called British Invasion saw homegrown acts dominate the US charts, reshaping global pop culture

almost overnight. For American teenagers, it was a revelation. For us Brits, it was proof that creativity, not class or privilege, could define the nation’s place on the world stage.

While The Beatles undoubtedly dominated the UK charts, accounting for four of the UK’s five best-selling records of the decade, the other spot belongs to a surprising contender… comedian Ken Dodd.

Whilst Dodd is now most remembered for his unique brand of comedy, he was a prolific recording artist throughout the 1960s, recording primarily ballads and love songs. Dodd’s ‘Tears’ was a bestselling No. 1 in 1965 and became the third-best-selling single of the decade, proving that not all chart-toppers were from the Liverpool lads.

Outside the charts, Sean Connery brought James Bond to life, making 007 a global icon of British cool, England’s World Cup victory at Wembley in 1966 gave the nation its proudest footballing moment, and just off the British coast pirate radio stations like Radio Caroline were broadcasting rock ’n’ roll to young audiences, defying BBC censorship rules.

Sixty-five years on, the impact of the Swinging Sixties is undeniable. From fashion and film to football and free expression, it was the decade when Britain went from black-andwhite to technicolour – and its echoes still shape culture today.

Our perfectly portable folding powerchair

Pumpkin, sage and brown butter pasta

Easy to prepare and wonderfully comforting, it’s a recipe that feels both cosy and restorative. Gentle on the stomach but still full of flavour, this recipe is ideal when you want something warming, tasty and easy to put together.

Method

1. Roast the pumpkin: Preheat oven to 185°C (365°F). Line a small baking tray with parchment. Toss the pumpkin cubes with olive oil, salt, pepper, and a few sage leaves. Roast for 15–20 minutes until golden. Discard sage stems.

Cooking time: 25 -30 mins

Serving: 4

2 small handfuls of fresh sage leaves, stems removed Pumpkin, sage and brown butter pasta

Ingredients

950 ml chicken or vegetable stock

450 g pumpkin, cubed

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (about 30 ml)

½ tsp salt and ground black pepper (to taste)

100 g orzo

2 medium eggs, room temperature

115 g salted butter (8 tbsp)

50 g parmesan, finely grated or crumbled, plus extra to serve

2. Make sage brown butter: In a frying pan, melt 3 tbsp butter over medium heat. Add sage leaves and cook until the butter turns golden and the sage crisps. Remove from heat once you see deep golden flecks. Transfer to a small bowl and set aside.

3. Cook the pasta: Using the same pan, add chicken stock, roasted pumpkin, and pasta. Bring to a simmer and cook gently, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender and has absorbed most of the liquid.

4. Temper the egg: Crack the egg into a bowl and whisk. Add a spoonful of the hot pasta to the egg, whisking quickly. Repeat once more, then set aside.

5. Finish the dish: Stir the tempered egg, remaining 1 tbsp butter, and parmesan into the pastina. Mix until creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning.

6. Serve: Divide between two bowls. Spoon over the sage brown butter and garnish with extra parmesan. Serve immediately.

Happy eating!

Top tip!

When preparing the stock for this recipe, you’ll need to boil water. For those with limited reach, grip, or strength, the Uccello Kettle makes this step much safer and easier.

Book club spotlight The Thursday Murder Club

What do you get when you mix four sharp-witted retirees, a quiet retirement village in the English countryside, and a suspicious death or two? The answer is Richard Osman’s runaway bestseller, The Thursday Murder Club.

The story follows Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron, four residents of Coopers Chase retirement village who meet every week to pore over unsolved crimes. When a local developer turns up dead, the gang suddenly find themselves at the centre of a very real murder investigation. It’s funny in places, poignant in others, and full of reflections on ageing, independence and the value of companionship. And the good news is, if you enjoy this first instalment, you’re in for a treat. Osman has now written five books

in the Thursday Murder Club series –with the fifth one released September 2025, each one building on the characters and their escapades – so there’s plenty more sleuthing to enjoy.

Better still, the story has made its way to the screen. The film adaptation, released August 2025, is available to watch on Netflix and has a starstudded cast including Celia Imrie, Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, David Tennant and Jonathan Pryce… what a list!

Have you joined Elizabeth and her friends on their sleuthing adventures? Do you agree with our take? We’d love to hear your thoughts – or your own book recommendations –by emailing life@careco.co.uk

Zero waste week

Did you know that just one email with a large attachment can produce up to 50g of CO2? Multiply that by the hundreds of messages that get sent by over 400 employees in our offices every day, and you start to see the invisible cost of something as routine as hitting “send” - a footprint that adds up fast!

That’s one of many reasons why CareCo have proudly supported global initiative #ZeroWasteWeek , dedicating five days to making small, but responsible choices every day across both CareCo HQ, in Braintree, and CareCo’s 36 nationwide showrooms. Rather than letting sustainability feel overwhelming, we wanted to show that every little action counts, and that innovative change can be made when woven into the rhythm of the normal working week. The goal? To encourage more mindful choices –

both at work and home – that reduce waste, cut emissions, and ultimately protect the planet.

Over the course of the initiative, CareCo staff embraced a transformative week, starting with ‘Power Down Day’dedicated to a powered down approach to the end of the working day, turning off all devices, lights, and technology. The momentary pause of shutting down screens became a reminder that energy saved is energy earned, for the business, but also for the planet.

Throughout the week, the teams also challenged themselves to a digital declutter, getting rid of old emails, downloads, and documents, which was both regenerative for our planet, and our inboxes, becoming an unexpectedly liberating habit, trimming down our collective footprint.

Towards the end of the week came ‘Food Waste Friday’ – which quickly became a staff favourite – sharing, and discovering, new favourite eats, using leftover ingredients to reinvent their tasty dishes.

At CareCo, we’re big believers that change doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It begins with awareness, grows with actions, and becomes impactful together, over time. By being conscious of the choices we make every day, we can all play a part in progressing sustainably, something which we were very proud of our teams for embracing through the week and moving forward.

7 days. Zero waste. Are you up for the challenge?

CSR: Mental health week

Jane Bunting, Head of HR, shares the importance of mental health at work.

Mental health is something that we take seriously at CareCo, and we want to ensure that we’re doing everything we can for all of our fantastic team.

Mental health is something that we all have, but that also means that sometimes our mental health isn’t the best that it can be. Earlier this year our team took part in Mental Health Awareness Week, involving playing mental health bingo, starting our very own bee hotels, taking on a day of walks, special guided meditation, a pet photo competition (congratulations to Caren Moore!), and one to one chats with our mental health ambassadors.

While we had a fantastic week and drew valuable attention to looking after our mental health, we want to ensure that all of our team are looked after throughout the year. Every business will be different,

but regular catch ups, social events and making sure that people can proactively talk when they need to can make a world of difference.

Top Tips for looking after your mental health at work:

• Speak to your colleagues

• Take a break and get some fresh air

• Having something to look forward to

• Get in a good routine

• Ask for help if you need it

• Eat well and keep up good sleep habits

Mental health is something that we all have but that also means that sometimes our mental health isn’t the best that it can be.

An occupational therapist’s guide to using a... rollator

Staying mobile is one of the most important ways to maintain independence, confidence and overall wellbeing. For many people, the right walking aid can make all the difference between feeling restricted and enjoying everyday life. Occupational Therapist Natasha Bruce-Jones shares her expert guidance on choosing and using a rollator safely, whether indoors or out.

Why a rollator can be liberating “When someone begins to struggle with mobility, the losses can feel huge,” Natasha explains. “But the right walking frame isn’t a sign of decline – it’s a tool for freedom.” A rollator not only supports safer walking but also helps reduce the risk of falls, improves posture, and allows users to stay active longer.

Choose the right frame for your needs

Not all walking aids are created equal. Zimmers, two-wheel walkers, trolleys and rollators each serve different purposes. For daily independence, four-wheeled rollators with seats and baskets offer the greatest flexibility. “They allow people to move safely, carry items handsfree, and even take a rest when needed,” Natasha says.

Learn

safe technique

The key to using any rollator is safety first. Handles should be set at wrist height, brakes applied when stationary, and stride kept within the base of the frame. “Think of it as walking normally with support, not pushing a shopping trolley,” Natasha adds. Indoors, take care with trip hazards; outdoors, choose models with suspension and brakes for added security.

Tailor your choice

From lightweight indoor frames with trays to outdoor rollators with armrests for those with arthritis, there’s a model for every lifestyle. “Above all,” Natasha advises, “remember this: not moving –brakes on. That simple habit can prevent countless falls.”

This chair’s changed my life so much. It’s made my quality of life easier and better, and I’m so happy I went for it.

Billy’s

story

Billy, from Leeds, has always lived an active life. But years of wear and tear as a professional rugby league player resulted in arthritis and a knee replacement, meaning everyday tasks like getting in and out of a chair had become a real challenge. Determined to stay independent and keep up with his six grandsons, Billy decided it was time for a chair that could support his lifestyle, not hold it back.

Over the years, Billy began to feel the impact of a life spent in motion. “I’ve had arthritis in my knees for a while,” he explains. “Earlier this year, I had a knee replacement. It went well, but I still struggle with some mobility, things like getting in and out of chairs.”

For Billy, the time had come to invest in a long-term solution. After some research, he decided on the Luxbury Riser Recliner with heat and massage.

“I chose the Luxbury because it had everything a normal chair doesn’t. The ability to lift me up out of the chair so I can stand more easily was the biggest seller, that’s exactly what I needed. But the massage and heat function didn’t hurt!” he says. “The dual controls are my favourite feature, one for adjusting the chair, and another that’s so easy to use for the other functions.”

The choice of fabric, and the ability to choose something to suit Billy and his home, was also a bonus. “There were plenty of options for me to pick from, and it felt a bit classy. It’s something I’m using every day, it’s become part of my routine, so I want it to look good.”

Billy also opted for the home assembly service after recently having a pacemaker fitted. “I wasn’t supposed

to lift anything heavy, so having the team come and set it up was a real help,” he explains. “They were brilliant - friendly, professional, and made sure I was completely happy with the chair and how to use it before they left.”

Now, the chair has become the centre of Billy’s day-to-day life. “I watch TV, have my lunch in it, and even take the occasional nap. I’ve built my routine around it while I get back to full health,” he says.

It’s also given him the freedom to focus on what matters most – whether that’s beating his grandkids at snooker or simply getting through the day without discomfort. “This chair’s changed my life so much. It’s made my quality of life easier and better, and I’m so happy I went for it. I’d recommend it to anyone.”

From the moment I entered the store I was greeted with a warm welcome and a smile from Coral, and my item was handed over, and I bought another couple of things as well- very friendly staff, well laid out store and a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
