Upcoming Events:

The spring semester is in full gear, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on our collective journey, as well as sharing some exciting updates for our international programs this semester.

At a Glance: This January we welcomed 13 new international students to our graduate program: 12 LLMs, and 1 Exchange student. They come from France, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Poland, and Zambia. They joined the 69 students who started in the fall semester: 56 LLMs, and 13 Exchange students from 24 countries. We love this diversity, and are working hard to grow our reach, globally!

A Semester of Growth and Connection: We’re seeing a positive growth of interest in our LL.M. program for the upcoming Fall 2025 semester. With our international reach expanding, your participation and engagement will continue to make a great impact in ensuring that Cardozo attracts the brightest legal minds from around the globe. Your experience, passion, network, and success are invaluable assets that can significantly influence our prospective students’ decisions. I hope that in the weeks and months ahead, you can dedicate some time to meet with our new LL.M. candidates, and help spark their excitement about joining Cardozo. I welcome you to join our LL.M. Open House on March 6th or any virtual events that we are hosting throughout the spring and summer months.

Looking Forward: There are many exciting events coming up this spring. I wish to highlight one of them hosted by Dean Leslie and Dean Catherine Kelly of the University of Bristol Law School: ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Digital: How to Make Sense of Crypto Assets’. I hope you can join us there on March 4th!

REFLECTIONS ON INDIA

By Dean Leslie and Associate Dean Val Myteberi This January 18th to 25th, Dean Leslie and I traveled to India and visited with colleagues and schools in New Delhi, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, Guwahati, and Sonipat. What an enriching experience this was for us!

The Indian hospitality was nothing short of exceptional, and it left a profound impact on us! We look forward to continuing our work in developing innovative programs with top law schools there. This trip was hosted and organized by O.P. Jindal Global Law School and their affiliated network of schools. We are grateful to Vice Chancellor Dr. Raj Kumar for his generosity and vision for our international collaborations. The discussions we had around innovative joint programs will help grow our footprint in India, and bring some of their top students to Cardozo.

One of our brightest LL.M. / J.S.D. alums, Dr. Sabarish Suresh, hails from Jindal Law School. Dr. Suresh is now a post-doctoral fellow at the National University of Singapore. His doctoral thesis, ‘The Unconscious of the Indian Constitution: Traumatic Histories and Repetitions’, which used a psychoanalytic methodology to examine the role of the partition in the making of the Indian Constitution, won the prestigious 2023 Julien Mezey Dissertation Award, annually awarded by the Association for the Study of Law, Culture and the Humanities (LCH) to most promising interdisciplinary dissertations on law.

We hope to see more scholars like Dr. Suresh join Cardozo in the near future!

International News LL.M. Student Represents U.S. at the 2025 E&Y Tax Professional of the Year Competition Congratulations to our LL.M. student, River Yarna on being selected as the finalist to represent the United States at the 2025 EY Young Tax Professional of the Year Global Competition. River joined Cardozo from Trinidad and Tobago, where he was a tax intern with Ernst & Young during his law studies at The University of West Indies - St. Augustine. During his time at Cardozo, River has worked as research assistant to Prof. Christine Kim. He has recently been delving into the cross-overs between intellectual property and tax. Upon graduation from Cardozo, River will join Ernst & Young in their State & Local Indirect Transaction Tax team in Manhattan. River’s hobbies include surfing and playing the electric guitar on lead and rhythm. He is fluent in English and is proficient in Spanish and French. Wishing him great success in his new career in New York!

LL.M. Students and Alumni Gather in Switzerland This January 23rd, Allegra Law Firm, and Cardozo alum Piotr CaicedoWójtowicz, graciously hosted a cocktail reception with Cardozo Swiss alumni, and new LL.M. candidates from University of Zurich, who will join our program this fall 2025. The five new LL.M. candidates enjoyed this networking experience, and appreciated the opportunity to ask questions and gain perspectives from the experiences of many lawyers in the room. This event is a great demonstration of our community spirit, and we remain profoundly grateful to Piotr, Allegra Law team, and all our Swiss alumni, for their continued support in our international recruitment efforts.

Cardozo at the 20th ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition in Paris, France

This February 3rd - 8th, at 20th ICC Mediation Competition, Professors Lela Love and Robyn Weinstein had the opportunity to collaborate on an event that featured stories from an accomplished group of mediators including Hal Abramson, Robyn Bailey, Nicolas Fournier, Andy Rogers, and Hannah Tümpel.

They each shared a short anonymized story with an audience of professional mediators from around the globe - drawing from a variety of contexts including commercial, family, and restorative justice. The stories were helpful, funny, moving, and inspiring. Prof. Weinstein reflecting on this event shared with us that “One of the many things I have learned from Professor Lela Porter Love is that stories have POWER. They can change our perspectives, increase our understanding, open us up to new ideas, and even shift our hearts.”

20th ICC Mediation Competition, Paris France

Cardozo at the LSAC Annual Conference in Montreal, Canada, May 28th - 31st, 2025 In a panel with colleagues from University of Michigan Law School, and UC Berkeley School of Law, associate dean Val Myteberi has been invited to speak about ‘Developing a World-Class Network: Transforming International Alumni into Global Advocates for your Law School’. Here is a description of that session: Because alumni engagement is a foreign concept to many international students, keeping them connected with the law school after they graduate may seem like a formidable task. When your alumni are all over the world, it can be difficult to identify opportunities to engage them with prospective graduate law students. This session will equip you with strategies to turn your international alumni into enduring, active contributors to your law school community. We’ll explore narratives and resources for maintaining strong connections with international alumni, including how to integrate them into your graduate law admissions and recruitment efforts.

International News The Aaron Kirschenbaum International Prize in Jewish Law Under the leadership of Dean Lior Zemer, and Dean Melanie Leslie, this past November, The Harry Radzyner School of Law at Reichman University in Israel and Cardozo School of Law established a bi-annual prize in Jewish Law in honor of Professor Aaron Kirschenbaum.

Professor Aaron Kirschenbaum was a prominent scholar and beloved teacher of Jewish Law, first as a faculty member of the Tel-Aviv University Law School, where he taught and headed the field of Jewish Law from 1970 to 1995, and subsequently at Reichman University (previously the Interdisciplinary Center, Herzliya).

Born in Brooklyn to a family of immigrants, Kirschenbaum studied both in university settings and at the famous “Yeshivat Torah va-Daat” before acquiring two Ph.Ds, one in Roman Law and the other in Jewish Law. He moved to Israel and became one of the formative scholars in establishing the field of Jewish Law at Israeli universities.

This year’s first prize was awarded in Israel to Cardozo JD alumna Rachel Furst and Sophia Schmitt for their article: “The Right to Light: Jews, Christians, and Shared Legal Practices in Medieval Ashkenaz” published in the Jewish Studies Quarterly.

The second prize will be awarded in New York in 2027, and will continue to be awarded alternately every two years. The prize is awarded to an early career scholar for an article written in Hebrew or English in the field of Jewish Law, broadly defined, accepted for publication during the previous three years.

The Kirschenbaum Prize Committee includes professors Ayelet Hoffmann Libson (Bar Ilan University), Benny Porat (Hebrew University), Ronen Kritenshtein (Reichman University) and our very own, Prof. Suzanne Stone.

I’m currently working on Fall 2025 admissions and am thrilled by the exceptional candidates who have been admitted so far.
