Dear Cardinal Family, Blessings on your summer! It is hard to believe we have wrapped up another school year. The Cardinal Family received many blessings this year that has led to much success for Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School & Academy. We are also excited about some changes coming to our school, which is inevitable in any organization.

First, a few highlights: • The Varsity Basketball team had their best season in school history going 23-2 while winning their first ever league TAAC championship, all while averaging above a 3.0 GPA.

• This year has blessed us with so much, especially with the record breaking Red & Black Gala on April 14, generating more than $105,000, the most ever raised in the history of this event.

• The Class of 2018 received more than $2.5 million in college scholarships, an average of nearly $40,000 per student.

As you may have heard, Kevin Parkins, our Principal for the past three years and an employee since 2011, was recently named Head of School at Central Catholic. We are excited for Kevin, his family, and for our Diocese. That, of course, means change for us as well. In mid-June we launched a nationwide search for a replacement. I encourage you to check out the video on our website to learn more about some of the changes that are coming, but I want to assure you that Cardinal Stritch is standing on firm ground, and we are extremely excited about the future for our students, parents, alumni and broader community.

We continue to be blessed with much success spiritually, academically, socially and physically while on our journey of forming disciples of Jesus Christ. Please continue to pray for our school, students, and families during these summer months. I look forward to seeing you at Party in the Parking Lot on August 17, 2018 at Stritch!

• This spring a partnership was announced with Lourdes University forming the Catholic Commitment Agreement that guarantees admission to our students that achieve a cumulative 2.5 GPA and above. These students can also receive a Lourdes Scholarship ranging from $3,000 to $8,000 per year based on their GPA. This partnership strengthens the options for our students.

Red & Black The school’s largest fundraiser of the year, Red & Black presented by Mercy Health St. Charles Hospital, achieved record-breaking results with nearly 400 supporters in attendance. On April 14, 2018 guests filled the Pinnacle in Maumee, OH dressed in their finest red and black attire to enjoy an evening of wonderful food and camaraderie.

Following the live auction a mini-campaign was introduced to alumni, parents and benefactors asking for their support to improve campus safety for all of our students, staff, and parents. The projects outlined include upgrades to our camera system both inside and outside of the building, and long overdue upgrades to our exterior doors.

Guests also had the opportunity to bid on items in the silent and live auctions. Some of those items included: dinner with Fr. Eric hosted by Chef Moussa Salloukh ’86, owner of La Scola Italian Grill, a week stay in a Destin, FL resort, donated by Jeanne Dailey ‘77 and Debbie Dailey ‘86 with Newman-Dailey Resort Properties, Inc, and a mountain mansion in Gatlinburg, TN donated by a proud parent of Stritch alumni.

In total over $105,000 was raised for scholarships, financial aid, teacher salaries, campus safety and all the little things that make a big difference for students at Cardinal Stritch.

Graduation The Fifty-Fourth Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement of Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School took place on Sunday, May 20, 2018. The graduation ceremonies were held at the historical Our Lady, Queen of The Most Holy Rosary Cathedral in downtown Toledo.

The event began with the Baccalaureate Mass celebrated by Fr. Eric Schild, where he thanked the Class of 2018 for welcoming our first-ever student with Down Syndrome, “I have experienced with this class throughout the year – a willingness to accept and love someone who is different than them.

As Jonas came to our school, no one knew how he would be received. This school year I witnessed love, joy, patience, kindness and generosity.” The Mass was led by the beautiful singing of the high school chorale.

The Commencement Exercises began with the invocation delivered by Campus Minister Shane Goetz ’12. The Salutatory address was given by Bethany Sager and the Valedictory address by Emmett Krall, followed the invocation. During the ceremony, the Bishop’s Cross winners were announced and awarded to Victoria Pasquarette and Evan Sekerak. Principal Kevin Parkins reflected on the incredible year the class experienced and offered words of inspiration as they move onto their future.

Overall, the class of 2018 will be attending 22 different colleges/ universities, with some students joining the military.

We look forward to seeing all the wonderful things the Class of 2018 will accomplish in the future. Once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal.

PRESIDENT'S RECEPTION On Wednesday, May 9, Fr. Eric Schild, President of Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School & Academy, welcomed leadership donors and generous volunteers at school for the annual President’s Reception. Each year, the President's Reception honors the leadership donors & volunteers who have given time, talent and treasure to fuel the mission of forming Disciples across our student body.

In addition to a cocktail reception, hors d’ourves, and a report on the impact that these leaders have had on the mission of Cardinal Stritch, an updated donor wall was unveiled. Notable additions to the wall were donor participation levels for the top alumni classes and most significantly recognition of our first ever $1,000,000 lifetime donors – Pat & Marilyn McAlear.

Parents of Michael ’78 and Tom ’80, Pat & Marilyn have served the school in a variety of ways over the last

three decades, contributing regularly to the school’s annual fund, the Campaign for Cardinal Quality in the late 1980s, as well as the most recent Strengthening Our Roots Capital Campaign. Pat & Marilyn were inducted into the Cardinal Stritch Hall of Fame in 2004.

While Pat & Marilyn McAlear were unable to attend the evening, they were presented with a custom blown-glass Cardinal in recognition for their incredible support. The Cardinal was created by Gathered Glass in Downtown Toledo and is engraved “A Million Thanks.”

We are grateful for all of the generous donors who support us with time, talent and treasure. The Arts are Alive at Cardinal Stritch This was a very exciting and dynamic year in the Fine and Performing Arts departments. Many amazing projects, events, and competitions showcased our students hard work and efforts. We are so proud of our students and faculty for enriching us with the Arts this year.

Patrick Flanigan ’69

I currently direct the Theatre activities of Performing Arts at Cardinal Stritch. I am a 1969 graduate of Cardinal Stritch and it is at Stritch that I began my career in the wonderful world of Theatre. I earned a B.A. in Theatre at the University of Toledo and then went on to earn an M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts) in Theatre, from the University of California at Irvine.

I spent more than 30 years in the Los Angeles area working professionally as an actor, director, producer, production manager and technical director. I also studied acting with some of the finest actors in the current era, i.e. Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ben Kingsley, Darryl Hickman. I was a principal actor on such shows as “The Young and the Restless”, “Capitol”, and “Days of Our Lives.” As a production manager I worked with performers such as Jack Lemmon, The New York Philharmonic with Leonard Bernstein, The Eagles, The Martha Graham Dance Co. and many more.

I returned home to Stritch five years ago and began directing the 2015 Spring Musical “Fiddler on the Roof”.

Since then I have directed “Into the Woods”, “Hello Dolly”, and this past spring, “The Sound of Music”.

Kyla Gorey When I took my first ceramics class as a junior in high school I was instantly drawn to the material and process. The ability to organically manipulate

clay as it spun around on the wheel became a meditative process that allowed me to escape from the “real world” if only for a brief moment of time. The process of impatiently anticipating the results of each kiln firing sucked me in and held me captive. My high school ceramics teacher, Pat Palmer of Bowsher High School, fostered my love for the material and encouraged me to explore new techniques and think more intentionally about the forms I was making.

My interest in ceramics grew into a passion and I knew I wanted to pursue it as a lifelong endeavor.

My understanding and appreciation for the arts grew exponentially as I began studying art education at Bowling Green State University. I began to realize that art is much more than simply something pleasing to look at. Art has the ability to make us reevaluate and establish our beliefs and values. It can cause us to challenge our thinking and develop a better understanding of our social climate. Art can spark conversations which can lead people to take action and make change. Art can be very personal and reflective and it can also be global and transformative.

Art has helped me feel grounded and connected. I have found truth, curiosity, and understanding through art and my hope is to pass that on to my students. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education with a focus in ceramics from BGSU in 2010.

I am a firm believer that the arts play an essential role in our students’ education. The academic benefits of arts education are evident in the higher GPAs and lower dropout rates seen in students engaged in the arts. For years students have been asking the age old question, “How is this going to benefit me in the future?” and I am happy to explain multiple ways. Many activities students complete in my room are open ended and multifaceted.

Art-making has no definitive solution. There is no one equation with one right or wrong answer. Instead, students are instructed to experiment with materials, explore ideas, problem solve challenges, and develop concepts until they find a solution that works for them in that particular moment for that particular project. This can be quite challenging for students. One of my goals is to teach them to rely on and trust their own thinking rather than defaulting to someone else. Creativity, complex problem solving, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence are just some of the important and in-demand skills students will enhance within my classroom and take with them into whatever career path they pursue.

It has been deeply rewarding to watch students grow as individuals and artists over the last five years at Cardinal Stritch. I have been impressed by the level of creativity and imagination that has come through the school. Each student brings their own quirks, interests, energy, and charisma to the classroom. As an art teacher I get an inside glimpse of each individual student as they respond to prompts about meaningful memories, significant life choices, political opinions, fears, and social concerns to name a few. One of my favorite classroom activities are critique days when students present their work and explain their thinking. Through this discussion students learn about each other’s thoughts and opinions, make connections, and acknowledge and accept each other’s differences. We all get to know each other a little bit more and hopefully learn something along the way.

Lauren Hurd My name is Lauren Hurd and I am an Art Educator for students of all ages at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School & Academy. I obtained my Bachelor of Art Education degree from The Ohio State University and began teaching at Cardinal Stritch at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year. In my classes, I introduce students to a wide variety of mediums, techniques, and methods for making art, and base the content off the concept of blending fundamental skills with the knowledge of how to create meaningful artworks. I encourage the students to embrace the creation of visual imagery as a form of self-expression. We cover a lot of territory in learning about how to make meaningful

Starting in the Fall of 2018 I will be teaching Art Foundations, Printmaking & Mixed Media, and Art in the Community to the high school students, along with elementary and middle school art to the Academy students. I look forward to helping students grow as young artists through teaching them traditional and nontraditional ways to create art. Community service projects will continue to be an integral part of my classroom, as I fully believe that the arts are a perfect way to get students involved in meaningful service projects and see our Core Values in action. We have a fantastic art department growing at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School & Academy and I am honored to have the opportunity to teach these talented students!

I feel incredibly fortunate to teach at a school that places great value and emphasis on the importance of the arts when all too often you see it pushed aside in other schools.

Cardinal Stritch has been incredibly supportive of the art department and has allowed myself and fellow art teacher, Lauren Hurd, to take creative ownership in rebuilding the program to offer new classes and resources. I am especially excited to be teaching ceramics as it is what lead me to find purpose and meaning in my own life and will hopefully do the same for my students. The growth in the art department has lead to a new sense of community and connectedness in our school. There is a new found energy and momentum that I am excited to be a part of and am looking forward to seeing where the department goes next.

Tyler Lentz I am Tyler Lentz and I have been the band/choir director at Cardinal Stritch for the past six years. I currently teach four choirs and four bands ranging from grades 5-12.

During my time at Stritch I have enjoyed getting to know the Stritch Family and teaching students music. I have a wife, Lori and we just welcomed our first daughter, Lucy, into the world this past January. Prior to teaching at Stritch I graduated from The Ohio State University where I majored in Music Education. In my spare time I enjoy watching baseball and spending time with my family.

Arts Competition Recognition Over the last couple years there has been an increase in student interest and involvement in regional and national art competitions. Art competitions are a great way for students to receive various forms of recognition and validation for their hard work and talent. It takes a lot of courage to put your artwork out there and know that failure is an option. When a student’s work is not accepted into a competition it is a great opportunity to take a moment to reflect on their art and consider how they can improve. It shows great character and determination for a student to persevere and strive for improvement when their work as been turned down.

When a student’s work is accepted into a competition, however, the great sense of pride and accomplishment is well worth the hard work. Participation in competitions is a great real world application reflective of life as a working artist. The success of former art student Amanda Gargac ’17 who received several noteworthy awards at the regional and national level allowing her artwork to be exhibited in New York City and the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. has been a great inspiration to students.

Seeing a peer be so successful helps make the process more tangible and obtainable to students.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is one of the most well known and highly regarded art competitions for students in grades 7-12. Through this competition students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarship. This school year, students across America submitted nearly 35,000 original works in 29 different categories of art and writing. Only 827 artworks were chosen at the regional level to receive a Gold Key, Silver Key, or Honorable Mention. Two of our incredibly talented seniors received recognition in this year’s regional competition. Senior Bethany Sager received an Honorable Mention for her photograph, “The Forest Calls” naming it an accomplished work showing great skill and potential. Senior Bobby Guth received a Gold Key for his painting, “Angels”, making it one of the very best works submitted at the local level. Gold Keys are automatically considered for national level recognition.

Both student’s artwork, along with all other regional winners, was on display in the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. The Ninth Congressional District Art Exhibition is organized

by The Arts Commission in Toledo, Ohio in conjunction with Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur. The winning artwork

of this competition has the honor of display in the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. and Runners-Up are displayed in Congresswoman Kaptur’s office. Additionally, several university and corporate sponsored awards are available.

This year, the following Stritch student’s artwork was chosen by Kyla Gorey and Lauren Hurd to be included in the exhibition: Bethany Sager for her photograph, “This Lonely World”, senior Madeline Mosiniak for her painting, “In a Crowd”, and junior Emma Cronin for her mandala, “Flower of Hope”. Bethany received a BGSU School of Art Award and a Congressional Honorable Mention. All work was on display in the Fifth Third Center @ One Seagate in downtown Toledo, Ohio and traveled to Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio before making its way back home.

These are just two of the many different opportunities students have to participate in art competitions. As the art department keeps growing we look forward to a continued increase in student competition involvement.

Submitting work to competitions can be an intimidating and daunting, yet fulfilling and rewarding process that is sure to be a good learning experience!

— Art Showcase at Art Supply Depo

This year we were incredibly fortunate and excited to team up with Jules Webster ’01 and The Art Supply Depō in downtown Toledo for a Cardinal Stritch Art Showcase.

Jules Webster is a proud graduate of Cardinal Stritch and is a firm believer in the importance of art and art education. In 2011 she opened The Art Supply Depō, an art supply store that offers unique, quality materials at affordable prices. Jules has since opened a second location in Bowling Green, Ohio. In addition to selling art supplies The Depō also offers a variety of art classes and hosts art exhibitions by community members.

Approximately twenty-five exceptional two-dimensional artworks made by Stritch student artists were carefully chosen by art teachers Kyla Gorey and Lauren Hurd to be displayed in The Art Supply Depō showcase. The selected artworks exemplified what it means to think and create like an artist. This could include thoughtful concept development, commitment to mastering technique, or impressive personal improvement. The work was on display in the Toledo store during regular business hours

February through March and included a public reception that brought the community together to fully appreciate and celebrate the works. Jules and The Depō staff selected three artworks to receive special recognition and a gift card during the reception. The selected student work included junior Khadijah Cunningham’s painting, “I’m Just Trying to Have Fun”, senior Madeline Mosiniak’s illustration, “The Differences of Women”, and senior Bethany Sager’s photograph, “This Lonely World”. All students were ecstatic to have their work displayed in a local store downtown.

The showcase at The Art Supply Depō was a huge success and is something we hope to make an annual event.

Additionally it is great to see a Stritch graduate making a successful living pursuing the arts. Jules has helped establish and strengthen the arts community and is proof that pursuing your passion can be a reality and is totally worth it. We intend to team up with Jules and The Depō in the future to offer discounted supplies to our students and continue to spread the word about the power and importance of the arts.

The high school art exhibition is an annual event showcasing the exceptional artwork made throughout the school year by our talented high school students in grades 9-12. For a week in May the athletic hallway at Cardinal Stritch is transformed into an impressive display of art spanning the length of the hallway and extending from floor to ceiling. Each student involved in an art class has work on display. This is a great opportunity to appreciate and celebrate the exceptional work made by all our student artists throughout the year. During this week the entire student body, staff, and visitors to our building get to experience the creativity, imagination, and hard work of the art department!

The artwork on display includes a wide range of artistic mediums, materials, and processes. Everything from painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, and mixed media can be seen. Both students and teachers are involved in the selection process and can choose to display work for a variety of reasons including personal artistic growth, mastery of a material, risk taking, or meaningful concept development. Seniors have an opportunity to do a “senior showcase” which involves designing a display consisting of artwork they’ve made throughout their four years at Stritch. Seniors are directly responsible for all aspects of their display including selecting, preparing, and arranging artwork at their table in a unique and creative

way. They are asked to consider what they can do to show their individual personality and talents as an artist. When it all comes together it is truly a wonderful sight to see!

A reception takes place on Sunday during the exhibition, flooding the athletic hallway and gymnasium with family and friends coming to see and express appreciation for the show.

Light refreshments are enjoyed while conversations about artistic reasoning, meaning, technique, and creativity fill the air. Art teachers Kyla Gorey and Lauren Hurd do an awards presentation to recognize students who have excelled in the art room in many different ways. Handmade awards were presented to the students by their repsective Art teacher.

This year, to help raise money for the visual art department, an art raffle and print sale took place during the reception. A grand prize basket consisting of over $200 worth of fine art supplies was generously donated by The Art Supply Depō to be included in the raffle. We were happy to present this basket to the winning student, freshman Allison Fellman.

This yearly tradition has given students the chance to see their work in a more formal setting and reinforces the importance of their creations. It has been a wonderful way for the talented young artists to proudly share their art with friends, teachers, and families. Teachers Kyla Gorey and Lauren Hurd look forward to continuing the growth and development of the high school art exhibition.

Coloring Book

Last year, two of Ms. Hurd’s high school art classes created a coloring book for teenagers and adults as a service project that resulted in 150 copies being donated to the Toledo Children’s Hospital.

This year, one of Ms. Hurd’s classes decided to continue the tradition and are proud to have created the second-annual Cardinal Stritch Coloring Book, this year called ‘A is for Art’. Students set out on an adventure designing unique ways to visually represent a letter of the alphabet that they were assigned. Because the class decided they wanted the images to be a full picture without text, they decided to add a second page for each student to create with a bit of information about the word and a fun activity to accompany it. This resulted in the coloring book growing to be 60 pages long!

Seeing the end result was so moving for the students because they could see that the artwork they contributed to the project was transformed into a professionally made coloring book for a good cause. The goal was to create this book for younger students to engage with learning in a creative way; however, the images were so beautifully drawn that they are fun for teenagers and adults as well. This year’s coloring book was sponsored by United Way, The Andersons, The Blade, and BCAN. The partnership formed with these organizations allowed us to donate two copies to foster children in the Toledo area for every copy that was sold. Giving students the chance to experience a service project of this magnitude opens their eyes to the ways they can positively impact their community.

Bob Reynolds, Jr. ’65

Legacy Endowment for the Arts For more than 35 years, Bob Reynolds, Jr. ’65 served as a teacher, coach, and mentor to thousands of students attending Cardinal Stritch, and even before that, he was a proud graduate of 1965, the first graduating class at Stritch. Bob was inducted into the Stritch Hall of Fame in 1995.

We are honored to join with the family of Bob Reynolds, Jr., in announcing the establishment of the “Bob Reynolds, Jr. ’65 Legacy Endowment for the Arts.” This endowment, which will be the school’s first programmatic endowment, will ultimately support both the fine and performing arts at Stritch.

The Bob Reynolds, Jr. ’65 Legacy Endowment for the Arts will support Cardinal Stritch in a variety of ways. The first, will be by directing the interest earned on the endowment to support fine and performing arts at Stritch. Additionally, this endowment will support the school through a long overdue renovation of the stage.

Throughout his time at Stritch as a student, teacher, and coach, Bob spent countless hours on that stage. The stage is expected to be completed by the start of school in August 2018.

Please join us in supporting Bob’s love of Stritch and the Arts by donating to the “Bob Reynolds, Jr. ’65 Legacy Endowment for the Arts.”

With your help we can provide much needed support for hundreds of students learning and growing through the arts each year.

Band The band program at Cardinal Stritch starts in 5th grade where students first learn to play an instrument. After beginning band in 5th grade, students continue to play in middle school where they perform several concerts throughout the year.

Beginning in 8th grade, students have the opportunity to join the high school marching band. In high school students perform in marching band, pep band, and concert band throughout the school year. They also perform at 8th grade visitation, parades, pep rallies, and other school functions. This year’s high school band was very successful. We brought back pregame for football games and performed at the FOX36 PreGame special at the Buckeye Broadband store on Talmadge on live TV. We had four students participate in OMEA Solo & Ensemble with all of them receiving a I or II rating, which are the highest two marks possible. In the past five years the Stritch band has doubled in size with a variety of instruments.

Cabaret has been a long standing tradition at Cardinal Stritch dating back at least 10 years. Cabaret is a dinner-theatre performance where guests sit at tables and are served a catered meal while watching a show featuring the high school band and choirs. Cabaret is completely run by the students. Students choose the theme for the show, serve food, setup and tear down, and also perform! This year’s theme for Cabaret was the “Splendor of Color” with all songs featuring a color in the title or artist. Past themes include: British Invasion, Not That 70’s Show, Grammy’s, and Back to the 50’s. This year’s cabaret was the most successful in the past six years with over 300 guests attending.

Theatre Beginning in 2016, Cardinal Stritch began offering Theatre classes in performance and technical theatre and Theatre Literature. Drama in Western Civilization is offered as a junior/senior class and is now offered for college credit from the University of Toledo as “An Introduction to Theatre.” Drama and Theatre 1 & 2 are semester classes open to those with beginning interest in theatre. These classes study voice, improvisation and scene work. In the second semester they continue this work but adapt it to video performance. They complete a minimum of two short video projects. Students learn how to use a video camera, sound recording, storyboarding, acting on camera and video editing; the later working with Mrs. Gorey of Visual Arts.

We also offer “Theatre Workshop” which is a junior/senior class that requires an audition, for performers, or an interview, for students wishing to work in technical theatre. These students perform or work on a non-musical play in the fall quarter and perform or work on the major spring musical (winter quarter).

Performers must audition for a role and be cast. This class also creates a video project in the spring quarter.

Theatre Arts has been growing over the past four years and we are looking to continue to increase class offerings and cross over training with other studies offered at Cardinal Stritch such as: Engineering, Visual Arts, and English.

First TAAC Championship A quote by Jean-Jacques Rouseau may sum up this year’s Varsity Boys’ Basketball season best: “Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.” After 57 years, Cardinal Stritch earned it’s first ever Conference Championship in Boys’ Basketball by winning the Toledo Area Athletic Conference (TAAC).

This was a historical year for the Cardinals as they earned a perfect record of 14-0 in the TAAC to go along with setting the school record in wins as they finished with an overall record of 23-2. The team was awarded for their success on the court, the Cardinals finished ranked #5 in the State Division III AP Poll and ranked #1 Division III in the Toledo Blade Poll. After the regular season came to an end, Stritch earned a Sectional Championship, which was played at Bowsher High School by defeating Gibsonburg by the score of 66-23. With this victory the Cardinals earned a spot in the District Semi-Final at Central Catholic against the Genoa Comets. Cardinal Stritch defeated Genoa by the score of 59-53 which now set-up a District Championship game against the Archbold #1 seed in the district. Stritch got off to a hot start and took an early lead over the Bluestreaks but Archbold was the better team on this night and defeated the Cardinals by the score of 7465 bringing the season to an end. This was the last game for seniors Collin Yost, Shaun Enright, Jeff Dunsmore, Alex Adams and Terrance Taylor. Coach Kachmarik had this to say about these seniors, “The seniors have been outstanding all year, the impact they have made on our program is huge. In their last two seasons they have won 44 games with only 7 losses, a TAAC Championship, a

District Championship, a District Runner-up and a school record in wins! What a run these young men have had, their hard work truly paid off.” With a historical season like this some well-deserved accolades for members of this team were earned. Sophomore Joey Holifield was named the Player of the Year in the TAAC; joining Joey on First Team All-TAAC was Junior Jordan Burton. Junior Little Anderson was name Second Team All-TAAC. Seniors Collin Yost and Alex Adams were both named Honorable Mention AllTAAC. Coach Kachmarik was named Coach of the Year in the TAAC. Sophomore Joey Holifield and Junior Jordan Burton were both named First Team All-District 7. Junior Little Anderson, Senior Collin Yost and Senior Terrance Taylor were named Honorable Mention All-District 7.

Sophomore Joey Holifield earned First Team All-District Honors by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association. Junior Jordan Burton was named Third Team All-District and Junior Little Anderson was named Honorable Mention AllDistrict. Coach Kachmarik was name the District Coach of the Year Division III. “I am so proud of all the young men on this team who have worked so hard to achieve so much this season. I want to thank my staff for all the hours they have put in to help our program have this much success. Thank you to all of our parents and fans for their endless amount of support throughout this season. We are all truly blessed to be part of the Cardinal Family!” said Coach Kachmarik.

It might have taken a while, like 57 years, but it sure was worth the wait to see a Boys’ Basketball Championship Team here at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School.

The 2017-18 school year provided many memorable moments for the Athletic Department at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School.

The Athletic Department would like to thank all of the studentathletes who participated in athletics this year. Many of our studentathletes earned All-League recognition in the TAAC (Toledo Area Athletic Association) this season. The Cardinal’s Nest The Cardinals Nest builds strong working relationships among parents, teachers, and students in support of the school.

The organization provides activities for students Pre-K thru 8th grade and their families. These activities include Family Movie Night, Grandparents Day, Trunk n Treat, and Father/Daughter Dance just to name a few.

The Cardinals Nest also strives to support the faculty and staff of Cardinal Stritch. Not only is a teachers wish list granted for Pre K thru 8th grade teachers but the organization also provides a week of staff appreciation to show how much they are all valued.

The goal of this organization is to create activities outside of school where students, teachers, and parents can come together as a faith-filled community and build relationships all while having fun.

Dear Fellow Cardinal Stritch Alumni, On December 6, 2017, I was humbly voted in as the Chair of the newly formed Alumni Association, a role I will proudly serve for the next two years. Cardinal Stritch has become an integral piece of me and my family’s life story and I am pleased to accept this role. It is particularly exciting to serve as the Chair of the Alumni Association for all alumni of Cardinal Stritch High School at a time when school leadership is actively working to increase the connections among all members of the Cardinal Family.

I hope to do everything I can, along with the Office of Advancement, to foster renewed friendships between alumni of Cardinal Stritch and to increase connections between graduates and today’s Cardinal Stritch students and teachers. Since forming the Alumni Association this past year, we’ve held no-cost Stritch Socials and alumni gatherings around the Toledo area and in Columbus, OH. Thank you to everybody who has attended, and to those who have not yet attended, what are you waiting for?

classnotes John Polakovic ‘65 has been a busy man since being a member of the very first graduating class of Cardinal Stritch!

Accomplishments and things he has done since then include: licensed auctioneer for 28 years; registered blacksmith for 22 years; pilot; teacher/instructor in Advanced Massage Therapies and Structural Anatomy; Board Member of the Massage Therapies Department at Stark State College in Canton, Ohio; served in the Military Police of the United States Army for six years and has been a professional drummer for 40 years.

John was the original drummer for the Cakewalkin’ Jass Band of Toledo, Ohio, which celebrated its 50th year last December with a weekend of jazz at the East Side Tony Packo’s Cafe. His hobbies include golf and bowling.

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve as your Alumni Association Chair. I’m excited about working with the more than 6,000 graduates to celebrate Stritch, and the special place it holds for us as we partner to strengthen and grow our Alumni Association.

John Pavlica ‘80 recently began a new job as an Application Engineer III at Marathon Special Products, a division of Regal Beloit America, in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Tom Chrzanowski ‘99 came home for a Campus Tour while in town from Dallas, TX in June. While touring the Sister Rose Angela building, he even found his name on the plaque for the “National School Choral Award.” During his visit, Tom credited Cardinal Stritch for “giving him the roots to be successful” throughout his career. Thanks, Tom! Andrea Ulinski Powers ‘04 and her husband, Edward, celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary this year. MCNEAL DISCERNING PATH TO PRIESTHOOD TOLEDO NATIVE SPENDING SUMMER AT DIVINE MERCY CATHOLIC PARISH Reprinted with permission

By TIM McDONOUGH @cnmcdonough tmcdonough@crescent-news.com PAULDING - Growing up the youngest of three boys in a Catholic family in Toledo, Bradley McNeal had thoughts about becoming a priest while attending Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic School in his youth. During his years at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School in Oregon, McNeal began to give serious thought about the priesthood as his future.

A 2012 graduate of Cardinal Stritch, McNeal attended the University of Toledo where he earned a bachelor’s degree in special education in 2016. Instead of becoming a teacher, McNeal enrolled at The Anthenaeum of Ohio - Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West in Cincinnati, where he began studies to become a priest. McNeal, now a seminarian for the Diocese of Toledo, has been assigned to spend June and July at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish in Paulding County (the parish includes three churches in Paulding, Antwerp and Payne). During the next two months, McNeal will learn more about parish life from Father Joseph Poggemeyer, and become involved in various activities in the parish.

“When I was young and in grade school, I had thoughts about becoming a priest, but it wasn’t anything I seriously entertained,” said McNeal, who is two years into a seven-year program to become a priest. “It wasn’t until the latter part of my time in high school, that the idea of the priesthood really came into my mind. Father Eric Schild, the school president, was very influential to me in growing my faith and his excitement about the faith energized me. “I’ve had people ask me if I ever thought about being a priest, especially when I was in college (at UT),” continued McNeal. “I hadn’t told anyone that I was already thinking about

it, so that made me aware people thought I had qualities that a priest may have. Being in seminary has helped me grow and discern this vocation. I’m two years into it, but each year I’ve felt a greater sense of peace, and I feel God has me in the right place at this time.” McNeal, who just completed his second year of pre-theology (philosophy) studies, first learned in April that he would be spending two months this summer in Paulding County beginning May 29. The selfproclaimed “city boy” admitted that life in Paulding is different than what he’s used to.

He also shared that the opportunity to learn more about priestly life is one he is relishing.

“Each summer, the vocations director of the diocese and Bishop (Daniel) Thomas decide where to send seminarians to serve,” said McNeal. “Last year I spent the summer doing mission work in eastern Kentucky in the Appalachian Mountain area, so this year is my first year serving a parish. I’ve never been to Paulding County, it has been a bit of an adjustment, but I’m thankful I’m here.

Everyone I’ve met has been very welcoming and so very nice. “Father Poggemeyer is great to work with, too,” continued McNeal.

“The parish has hosted seminarians in the past, and Father Poggemeyer is a good role model and teacher for us. In addition to showing me what daily parish life is like, I’ve learned a lot from him about understanding the liturgy and the Catholic faith overall. His experience and academic background are impressive, and I know I’m blessed to be here working with, and learning from, him.”

Although he’ll only be at Divine Mercy for two months (his final day will be July 31), McNeal explained that having a good rapport and building relationships with the people of the parish is one of his main goals. Following his time at Divine Mercy, McNeal will attend Convocation in August in Fremont, where he and the other seminarians from the diocese will take the next step on their journey. “I want to get to know the people here and build good relationships, I want to be involved in the parish, and I want to grow more deeply in

my faith because of these experiences,” said McNeal. “In August, I will attend the five-day convocation in Fremont, where I will get to spend time with the other seminarians before heading back to my studies. While there, I will receive candidacy for Holy Orders, which is a big step in this discernment process. “I would ask that people continue to pray for an increase in vocations for the priesthood and religious life in our diocese,” added McNeal. “This path isn’t always easy for young men discerning the priesthood, but through prayer we can ask God to bring those in the process a sense of peace, to help them grow in faith, and to follow His path. Through the power of prayer, it is possible.”

Stacy Molnar ‘11 was married to Brock Bell on June 9, 2018 at St. Jerome Church by Fr. Eric Schild. She will be going into her 4th year teaching health and physical education at Carey High School and this will be her first season taking over their varsity volleyball program as Coach Bell. Stacy also graduated from Findlay University on May 5, 2018 with her masters in education!

Erica Gears ‘11 and Tim Langlois ‘11 were married on April 14, 2018 and purchased a home in Shoreland. Tim is a Toledo policeman and Erica is a dietetic technician at Genacross as well as a cheeleading coach at Stritch.

Published in University of Toledo Alumni eMagazine Bethany Grayczyk ‘11 participated in the World Race, an 11-month program where participants travel to 11 countries where they evangelize about a life of serving Jesus, teach the Gospel through partnerships with established ministries, and participate in community service projects. Throughout her travels, she has visited Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar, South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In 2015, her sister, Joy Grayczyk Borish ‘10, also participated in the World Race, organized

by Adventures in Missions.

Amanda Gargac ‘17 won the National YoungArts Foundation competition in November. It was a national portfolio competition across all artistic disciplines, not just visual arts. As a winner, she attended one of three regional programs and received a six-day, all expenses paid trip to New York City. Amanda was one of 12 visual artists chosen for the trip, which included a total of 80 artists. The program is geared toward giving artists the network and resources to make their dreams viable realities and the week consisted of meeting and working with world-renowned artists. As part of the week, the visual artists were given the opportunity of a lifetime to exhibit work for a weekend at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Ps1 gallery in New York, one of the most well known respected to places in the world to show art. Amanda stated, “I mean this in all sincerity when I say that this opportunity changed my life. I cannot believe that I can now say I have had art shown there!”

Jane Murphy passed away on December 31, 2017. She is the mother of our 3rd Grade Academy teacher, Sharon Velliquette.

Darcy Watt passed away on January 2, 2018. She is the mother of Steven ‘15.

Margaret Rieker passed away on January 6, 2018. She is the grandmother of Caty Rieker ‘14 and mother of Dave Rieker, former Stritch boys basketball coach.

Mary Ann Toth passed away on January 6, 2018. She is the mother of Terry Toth Koren ‘76.

John Garand passed away on January 10, 2018. He is the father of Jennifer Garand Crawford ‘84, Reverend J. Douglas Garand ‘85, Julie Garand ‘86 and Jill Garand Hollaway ‘94.

Walter Shields passed away on January 14, 2018. He is the grandfather of Jimmy Reindel ‘06 and Josh Reindel ‘09.

Tay Gould passed away on January 15, 2018. She is the mother of Michelle Gould Cervetto ‘87 and Barbara Gould Cervetto ‘89.

Oliver LaFleur, Jr., passed away on January 18, 2018. He is the father of Tom ‘76, Jeanine ‘77, Denise ‘82 and Donna ‘82. Oliver was preceded in death by his son Bill ‘70.

Antoinette Bartok-Baumgartner passed away on February 18, 2018. She is the mother of Linda Bartok Oros ‘65.

Lucy Pinciotti passed away on March 15, 2018. She is the grandmother of Andrew Pinciotti ‘09, Gabriel ‘10 (Haley Gears ‘09) Pinciotti, Christina Pinciotti ‘13 and Victoria Pinciotti ‘15.

Anita Szollosi Hooker ‘77 passed away on March 16, 2018. She is the sister of Carol Szollosi Findling ‘66.

Janet Sheehy passed away on March 26, 2018. She is the mother of Joan Sheehy Miller ‘76, Rick ‘77, Jim ‘80 (Melinda Schwind ‘78) and Diane Sheehy Krueger ‘82.

Ryan Kersey passed away on March 26, 2018. He is the nephew of Sister Eileen Simon ‘68.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her son, Mike ‘78.

Connie Guth passed away on May 25, 2018. She is the wife of Mark, a member of the Stritch maintenance department, and mother of Emily Guth ‘12, Alyssa Guth ‘15 and Bobby ‘18.

Walter Goetz passed away on May 29, 2018. Walter served as past president of the Cardinal Stritch School Board and was inducted into the 2003 Cardinal Stritch Hall of Fame, along with his wife, Dorothy. He is the father of Michael ‘71, Susan Goetz Knerr ‘72, Kathleen Goetz Hufford ‘73, David ‘74, Stephen ‘75, Kristina Goetz ‘81 (Stephen ‘81) Major, James ‘82, Mark ‘84 and Timothy ‘86. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, and son, Gerald ‘79.

Helen Wodarski passed away on May 29, 2018. She is the grandmother of London Ritzler ‘13 and Bryce Ritzler ‘16.
