The Widening Access course was the stepping stone that has allowed me to achieve my degree and full-time employment in an industry I love.”

Reaching Wider is a partnership of universities, schools and colleges working together to improve social mobility by widening access to all forms of higher education.

This national programme, funded by MEDR to increase higher education participation from underrepresented groups by raising educational aspirations and skills, and creating innovative study opportunities and learning pathways to higher education.

The Reaching Wider team based at Cardiff Metropolitan university work very closely with the Widen Access team and with local authorities, employers, schools and third sector organisations to improve the education outcomes of our learners.

We meet the aims of Reaching Wider through a suite of programmes to a number of audiences including adults to support attainment raising, increase awareness and provide support for progression to higher education and level 4 learning opportunities.

The Reaching Wider Adult Learning programme exists to raise the educational aspirations of adults twenty-one and over with no UK recognised level four qualifications from WIMD40 areas across South East Wales. Designed around our

learners’ needs, the programme is a holistic offer in two parts: ‘Future Me’ and ‘Pathways.’

Future Me aims to help learners develop the ability to make informed choices, develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in higher education. Pathways is our suite of subject specific nonaccredited courses offering learners the opportunity to explore different subjects and progression pathways in their area of interest.

We are delighted that the summer school is part of our Pathways offering of creative and subject specific workshops and courses, allowing students to experience university first hand.

‘The course has impacted my future positively. I realised I could enjoy learning. It enriched my reading and my writing in equal measure, and I discovered learning can be fun’ Participant

Through the summer school, Reaching Wider outreach initiatives, other on campus activities and mentoring programme, we empower learners to explore higher education pathways, their potential, break down barriers, and make informed decisions about their futures.

Can I park on campus?

Parking space on campus is limited so if it is possible to come by public transport, we’d recommend doing so.

Cardiff Met operates a pay and display parking system, costing £1 for a half day and £2 for a whole day parking. If you intend parking on campus, you will need to enter the main entrance and turn right into the guest car park and visitors’ spaces. Please go into the main reception to register your car. You can then pay for parking and reception staff will direct you to available spaces. A Student Ambassador will be available at reception to give you any help needed.

Where do I come on the first morning?

Please report to the main reception at the front of campus for the start of the course. Our Student Ambassadors will be there to welcome you, get you registered and take you to the Cardiff School of Management building where all classes will be held. They are also available to answer any queries you may have regarding your course or facilities at the University.

What if I haven’t done any study for a long time?

You are not expected to come with any prior subject knowledge. The courses are set up for people who have been out of education for a

while. Our experienced Tutors will help you to develop your skills and expand your knowledge in a supportive, friendly and fun environment.

Is

lunch provided?

Refreshments are not provided as part of our courses. However, some catering facilities are available on campus to purchase drinks and cold food. Please be advised that we operate a cashless campus.

I can only attend one of the days of the course. Can I still come?

You will not be able to attend if you are unable to come on all the days on which the course is running. Very often our courses will build on the work done the previous day and it is disruptive to both the Tutor and other learners if you can only attend part of the course.
