Foundation Certificate/BA (Hons)

Make a difference to the lives of young people and communities.

Youth and community workers play a central and exciting role in society supporting individuals’ personal and social development, enabling them to realise their potential. Our practical courses prepare you to train as an effective and professional youth and community worker.

You will be taught by highly experienced, qualified youth and community workers and benefit from our strong networks and partnerships to build your industry links.

Two study pathways are available:

• Foundation Certificate Youth & Community Work

• BA (Hons) Youth & Community Work

Foundation Certificate Youth & Community Work

This qualification is endorsed by the Education Workforce Council and Education & Training Standards (ETS) Wales and is delivered in partnership with Monmouthshire Youth Service.

The course equips you with the skills, values, confidence, experience, and knowledge necessary to fulfil the Level 3 professional requirements for youth work and enables you to obtain the 100 hours of youth work experience required to advance on to the BA (Hons) Youth and Community Work. You will also obtain the Certificate in Youth Work (Level 3), the professional qualification for Youth Support Workers.

BA (Hons) Youth & Community Work

Professionally endorsed by ETS Wales and recognised by the Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) for Youth & Community Workers, this degree provides a deep understanding of social inclusion, empowerment and the nature of society, allowing you to develop skills that will enable you to engage effectively in a range of professional roles.

You will undertake key work experiences in a wide variety of settings to enhance your employability. In year one you will complete 250 hours, in year two 300 hours, and in year three 250 hours on placement, supported by fieldwork facilitators and a personal tutor.

On completion, you will meet the registration requirements of the Education Workforce Council (EWC) and be equipped to work in a range of professional youth and community work roles and settings:

Place of study: Cyncoed Campus Course length: 3-4 years full-time, dependent upon taking foundation year

Entry requirements: Foundation Certificate

Typical offer: 48 UCAS Points

BA (Hons)

Typical Offer: 80-104 UCAS Points

Entry is also subject to an enhanced level disclosure barring service check. Students applying for the BA (Hons) will also require experience in an aspect of youth and community work, equivalent to 100 hours, to be completed prior to the start of the course.

• Graduate destinations include working in youth clubs, community development, youth justice, alternative education, and sports and outdoor pursuits. In addition, drug, alcohol, homeless, sexual health projects, schools-based and international youth work, mentoring and guidance.

• Many students obtain paid employment before graduation from placements and networking opportunities at our annual placement fair.

• Graduates can continue to postgraduate study in various subjects, as well as progression to the MA Advanced Youth and Community Practice at Cardiff Met.

Our purpose-built facilities at the Llandaff Campus provide a great learning environment designed to help you become what employers prize; an individual who can think for themselves with the knowledge and skills to make the right things happen.

At the Cardiff School of Management, we offer a wide range of professionally accredited and employability-focused undergraduate courses across the areas of Accounting, Economics and Finance; Business and Management; Law; Marketing; Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management.

Our undergraduate learners are able to gain valuable work experience during their time at Cardiff School of Management. You are given the opportunity, and support, to complete either a year out working in industry, a summer placement, or a 15-day internship as part of your chosen degree. You will be taught by academic staff who are experts in their field and benefit from access to specialist facilities, events and guest lecturers. Within CSM there is a well-embedded research culture that permeates across the School, advancing management knowledge and which underpins and enriches all of our teaching and learning.

Our impressive Cardiff School of Management building at the Llandaff Campus embodies our mission to inspire future leaders of industry whilst providing a hugely supportive learning environment.

Facilities include our purpose-built Moot Courtroom, Hospitality Suite and dedicated IT centres with access to specialist, professional software enabling you to develop your skills and gain practical experience as part of your studies.
