Challenge your view on crime.

Have you ever wondered what motivates people to commit crime? Have you thought about how society shapes our understanding of crime and criminals? Or how victims are treated within the criminal justice system?

This exciting criminology degree combines both theoretical and empirical study into a modern programme that will challenge the way you look at the study of crime.

In addition to learning about the underpinning philosophies and theories that explore crime as an academic field of study, you will explore the evidence base for these theories and philosophies, and potentially contribute towards our developing understanding in a range of cutting-edge topics.

During your studies you will focus on three key strands that are woven throughout the degree which include Criminology Theories, the fundamentals of the Criminal Justice System and Emerging Disciplines in contemporary Criminology.

You will gain valuable insight into real-world opportunities from a range of guest speakers and fieldtrips and be taught by research active lecturers who have both national and international experience within their specialisms.

Our dedicated facilities include a crime scene house, custody suite, observation and surveillance suite, suspect interview room and moot court room, provide you with critical simulated learning opportunities to put the knowledge and skills you learn into practice.

During the second-year placement you will gain invaluable work experience in appropriate and relevant industries, with one of our partner organisations. This placement is assessed via a Level 5 Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) qualification, so you will achieve a nationally recognised qualification which will help you to stand out from the crowd upon graduation. In addition, a range of supported voluntary opportunities are also available throughout your study.

Typical modules

You will study a range of core modules. In years two and three you can choose one optional module. Modules include:

• Exploring the Criminal Justice System

• Crime, Control and Prevention

• The Psychology of Crime

• Mental Illness, Neurodiversity, and Crime

• Threat, Risk and Harm or Applications of Psychology to Criminology (optional modules year two)

• Counter Terrorism or Cybercrime and Society (optional modules year three)

Place of study: Cyncoed Campus

Course length: 3 or 4 years full-time, dependent upon taking the foundation year (see page 126)

Entry requirements: Typical offer: 96-112 UCAS Points

Your future

• On completion you will be fully prepared for a variety of roles within the criminal justice sector and beyond.

• Graduate destinations include working in probation and police service, border force, social services, prison service, UK courts, HM Revenue and Customs, central or local government and more.

• Our degree provides you with a platform to progress to postgraduate and PhD study including our Master’s in Criminology and Criminal Investigations.
