Welcome to Cardiff. Our city, Wales’ capital.
Full of culture, green spaces and sport. Nightlife, shopping and a thriving international food scene. Music, adventure, waterways and more.
Deciding where to study isn’t just about finding the right course. It’s about choosing where you want to call home for the next few years of your life. This is your next chapter.
Whether you’re local to Cardiff, or considering studying with us from further afield, your new home awaits you.
Cardiff is ranked as one of the most affordable student cities in the UK.
Ranked 2nd in the 2023 NatWest Student Living Index.

finding your place
Although our city has a global reputation, it has a local feel – and one of the friendliest communities you could hope for. You’ll find the thriving student population mostly based in Roath and Cathays, two bustling suburbs brimming with independent cafés, bars, pubs and sustainable shops, both walking distance into the city centre.
For the toe tappers, Cardiff prides itself on its buzzing music scene. Home to smaller indy venues celebrating homegrown talent, like Clwb Ifor Bach, Jacobs Roof Garden and the Tramshed, you’ll also find internationally acclaimed bands at the Utilita Arena Cardiff and some of the world’s biggest artists performing at Principality Stadium. Stick around in the summer and watch a plethora of artists perform against the backdrop of Cardiff’s historic castle at the annual summer schedule of gigs.
Catch a show at the Sherman Theatre in Cathays, live comedy at The Glee Club in Cardiff Bay, or a film at one of Cardiff’s four multiplex movie theatres, Everyman Cinema and a handful of pop-up cinemas at Cardiff Castle and rooftop venues around the city.
The iconic Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay is a world-famous theatre and arts venue, ideal for musical fans, and at Chapter Arts Centre in the suburb of Canton you’ll find a cinema, contemporary theatre, bar and café all rolled into one.
When it comes to food, your first port of call is in the heart of the city centre at the historic Cardiff Market. Trading produce since the 1700s, Cardiff Market has now become the go-to venue for independent street food vendors, vintage clothing shops, traditional Welsh cuisine (warm Welsh cakes straight from the griddle!) and artisan coffee.
The city offers both big-name chains and an award-winning independent food scene with regular pop-up events and festivals around the city, such as the annual Street Food Circus.
You’ll find traditional pubs, cocktail bars like Tonight Josephine and The Botanist, and craft beer bars alongside a mix of nightclubs which all host weekly student themed nights.
Unique venues like The DEPOT – an independent, experience-led space established by Cardiff Met Marketing graduate Nick Saunders – offers a mecca for street food, live events and the notorious BINGO LINGO.
“One thing I love about Cardiff is, although it’s a small city, it has everything a student needs and more. There’s something for everyone, and it’s very affordable.”
Amanda Mulawarman Biomedical Science student
Spend your weekends in Cardiff soaking up the atmosphere at a host of different sports. From football at Cardiff City Stadium, international cricket at Sophia Gardens, ice hockey with the Cardiff Devils in Cardiff Bay and, of course, international rugby at Principality Stadium, Cardiff has a wealth of events to keep you entertained.
And if you want to be in the heart of the action, get involved in the annual Cardiff 10k and Cardiff Half Marathon, with a full marathon just a stone’s throw away in Newport.
A city for adventure (and beyond)
For those seeking adventure, indoor climbing, white-water rafting, ice-skating or swimming in a state-of-the-art Olympic sized pool are all at your fingertips.
Or you can enjoy some of the UK’s best surfing and coasteering, and biking, hiking or horse riding at the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, all within an hour of the city.
As the capital city of Wales, Cardiff is well connected and easy to get to.

Our campuses make grand ambitions and big dreams a reality. They’re where you’ll meet new friends and create lifelong memories.

You’ll find extensive sporting facilities designed to enhance the performance and academic development of our students (and often Olympic and Commonwealth athletes training on-site). There are also specialist teaching facilities for Education, Teacher Training, Media, Policing and Criminology degrees.

The capital of finding a home, of feeling welcomed by those around you, of open doors and open minds. The capital of cross corridor friendships, of milk and two sugars, of widening tastes and exploring new cuisines. The capital of bold nights out, of entertaining nights in. The capital of living it your way.
Moving away from home for the first time is a big step and finding your home away from home is key to ensuring you have a successful and enjoyable time at university. Our dedicated accommodation team are on hand to help – from the moment you apply, right throughout your time with us.
We currently offer nearly 1,000 study bedrooms located at the Cyncoed and Plas Gwyn campuses. There are a number of options across both campuses, from catered, self-catered, en-suite and shared facility rooms.
If you’re studying sport or education, then the Cyncoed campus is the most suitable. Plas Gwyn is convenient for those studying art and design, management, health sciences or technologies at our Llandaff campus. While we make every effort to allocate you to your chosen accommodation, this isn’t always possible due to demand.
In addition, we also provide private en-suite rooms to students through agreements with private halls located near the campuses. A full list of private halls can be found on our website.
Current hall fees information and the financial support that may be available to help with accommodation costs can be found by visiting: www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/hallfees
Once you have decided to make us your firm or insurance choice, you will need to apply online for halls from the beginning of April on our website.
If you would prefer accommodation in a private house, the Accommodation Office maintains a Landlord Register with landlords who meet all of the legislative requirements to let out their houses. We can also provide advice on contracts and what to look for.
We will guarantee you a place in university-approved accommodation if you're applying to be a full-time student at Cardiff Met for the first time.
To meet the criteria for guaranteed accommodation, you should:
• Never have been a full-time student at Cardiff Met in the past
• Have accepted an offer of a place at Cardiff Met and made us your firm choice through UCAS
• Submit your online halls application for accommodation no later than 31 May 2025
• Require the accommodation for the full letting period as a single occupant
• Accept our offer of accommodation, and pay your deposit within seven days of us issuing the offer
• Not be a 'local' student as set out in our Halls Allocation Policy
• Ensure we have existing suitable accommodation to meet your needs

Living in halls is not just about putting a roof over your head, it’s about meeting new people and having new experiences. This is where your Residence Life programme will help.
For many of you, living in halls will be your first taste of independence and being treated like an adult. We all had to leave home at some point and that first time can leave you feeling a bit nervous but excited by the whole thing. Don’t worry though, that’s normal and no matter what anyone says, it’s how we all felt. It is our aim to make living in halls one of the best experiences of your university life.
When making your application, you can also submit your preferences as to what type of accommodation you would prefer. For example, if you are a Welsh speaker and wish to be housed with other Welsh speaking students we do, where possible, accommodate these requests. Alternatively, you may prefer to be in an alcohol free or quiet flat and we do our best to accommodate these requests based on demand.
To find out more about what life in halls is really like, visit our Blogs website at: www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/blogs
Please note:
The images on these pages provide just a small sample of the types of accommodation available. Allocated on-campus and private halls may differ to those shown.
“I live with ten different people from across the UK and living in halls has been a really good opportunity to meet new people and try new things. The best thing is being so close to your friends and being able to walk down the hall, hang out, have a movie night or go into town and take advantage of the student life in Cardiff.”

Learn how to design buildings and make spaces for people in a creative and environmentally responsible way.
Architecture shapes the world around us. It reflects our societies and communities and influences the way we think and feel. Architecture dominates our skyline, transforms our cities, changes the way we live and work, and becomes part of our lives.
This degree establishes a creative dialogue between different areas of architectural knowledge: design, representation, technology, contextual studies and professional practice. You will develop your understanding of these areas and begin to find your voice as an architect.
You will formulate architectural proposals that are spatially and technically resolved, with a robust theoretical basis, and learn how to effectively communicate your proposals within a professional context.
We place particular emphasis on the architect’s responsibility in tackling contemporary problems of environmental concern, at the global and local scales (such as the climate emergency).
You will be actively encouraged to develop critical perspectives on how knowledge and creativity can be used together to arrive at design solutions that have the potential to render buildings, neighbourhoods and cities more sustainable in the short and long term.
The degree has been prescribed as a Part 1 qualification by the ARB (Architects Registration Board), the body that regulates the architect’s profession in the UK. Upon successful completion of this degree, you will gain exemption from the ARB's Prescribed Examination at Part 1, the first step towards becoming a registered architect.
“The Architecture course stood out to me because of the potential for growth and expansion. The skills I’ve gained are unmatched, and I’ve graduated with a diverse professional portfolio and ready to jump into a professional career.”

Unlock ideas for illustrative material – from a variety of perspectives.
Illustrations are active images; they always have a purpose, making sense of complex ideas. As an illustrator, you will work to enable understanding of the everyday – from enriching literature and poetry, to responding to societal issues from science and medicine to politics and economics. The challenge is to understand and use visual trends in a critical way, and to develop your own unique approaches whilst taking into account the power of images in a visually saturated world.
You will develop rich imaginative responses to build a unique practice that is inclusive of your audience. With core skills in drawing and narrative you will explore and experiment with materials, developing a range of technical skills to find your own visual languages with which to tackle challenging subject matter. Through our unique curriculum, you will grow a practice that is defined in its purpose not only by how you make your work, but importantly by what the work is about, how it communicates and its theoretical and historical context.
You will test your illustrations in a variety of environments and scenarios – exploring beyond the immediate world of the illustrator through, for example; animation, film, printed and digital media to contextualise and articulate your discipline, enriching your work with a greater understanding of the environment it operates in. You will join our Vertical Studio where you will explore, examine and reveal the discipline through dynamic conversations, debates and presentations, unlocking the power of illustration.
Illustration is constantly extending its reach. On this course you’ll interact with clients and collaborators, author and direct your own groundbreaking projects, and you’ll graduate with a wealth of versatile and transferable skills. Our commitment to hands-on, real-world experiences goes beyond theory. We help you to forge invaluable connections, engage in immersive placements, and thrive on live briefs. For those entrepreneurial thinkers we provide support to help you create and shape a business.

“I have been given the opportunity to teach a range of different dance styles to different ages and abilities. This has been within the community, at competition squad sessions and also at after-school clubs. These sessions have helped me to develop my lesson planning skills and my ability to adapt my approach to different situations – therefore not limiting my knowledge to just primary school teaching. Managing and teaching different groups and situations has allowed me to be ready to teach when faced with a real-life experience. It has also helped me develop my confidence; I am definitely less nervous to deliver a dance lesson than when I started!”

“One of the many benefits of studying the Sports and Physical Education Bilingual course is the size of the year group. We are a small group of eighteen students, and now we have all become great friends. It is great to socialise with fellow students through the medium of Welsh!
The Cardiff Met Branch is a society of students and staff who are keen to promote Welsh medium education and opportunities for students and staff and it works closely with the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol to ensure this. Further information can be found by visiting: www.cardiffmetsu.co.uk
Another benefit was the opportunity to receive a scholarship through the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. I wouldn’t change my experience at Cardiff Met for the world and I am confident that by the end of my studies, I will be equipped and ready to kick-start my career.”
