Cardiff becomes first Welsh city to put RAPAID emergency bandages kits in cabs

Cardiff has launched a life-saving initiative with RAPAID, a charity that provides emergency bleed kits in black cabs. Cardiff has become the first Welsh city to join this UK-wide campaign, which aims to equip public taxis with military-style bandages to manage bleeding from accidents or attacks. Supported by local authorities and taxi drivers, the kits are available to anyone needing to stop a bleed before emergency services arrive. Each kit includes illustrated instructions in Welsh and English, protective gloves and sterile bandages with an eight-year shelf-life.

Cardiff's New Tramway

Plans have recently been revealed for a modern tramway system in the heart of the city. These plans showcase the tramway connecting Cardiff Central railway station and Cardiff Bay areas for the first time. Cardiff Council and Transport for Wales have stated these plans will significantly improve the railway network within Cardiff and will benefit the wider region. Before plans are officially approved and construction is set to begin, members of the public have been invited to share their views as part of a six-week consultation which ends on October 27th, 2024. Be sure to share your thoughts about these plans and maybe one day soon we’ll see a tramway system in Cardiff.

Support Cardiff's 2024 Half Marathon

Taking place on Sunday, October 6th, experience the 21st edition of the Principality Cardiff Half Marathon. Cosy spots you need to visit

Morgan

As the nights start drawing in and the days get colder, we’ll all be on the lookout for those cosier spots when we’re out and about.

Luckily, Cardiff has plenty and the Morgan Quarter is filled with warm and welcoming places to stick your feet up with a hot chocolate or tuck into some hearty food.

The Morgan Quarter is made up of independent traders with a smattering of big-name shops, all found in the Royal and Morgan Arcades – and it’s the perfect spot to get out of the cold and the rain that will no doubt hit the capital.

in Cardiff's

Quarter

Here are our favourite cosy spots in Cardiff’s Morgan Quarter.

➊ Uncommon Ground

Good coffee, check. Cosy vibes, check.

Not only is this special coffee spot serving up its own beans from their very own roastery, but you’ll find tasty food and friendly staff inside. Along with cosy sofas and large communal tables, the ambient lighting and atmosphere in this family-run cafe makes it the perfect pitstop on an autumnal outing.

Where: 10-12 Royal Arcade

➋ The Cardiff Townhouse by Coppa Club

A relative newcomer to the city, this one has to be up there on the cosiness scale.

For starters, there’s a whole room called the Snug. You’ll also find private dining spaces, full of classy decor and comfy seating and the food and cocktails are great too.

Found in the former David Morgan department store, this well-designed venue is the perfect place to socialise, eat and drink, away from the Welsh weather. Where: 18 The Hayes

➌ Crumbs Kitchen

Another Cardiff staple, this little breakfast and lunch spot serves up warming veggie and vegan meals that taste amazing.

Think jacket potatoes, soups and curries, to name just a few menu items, this relaxed setting is sure to help you get cosy in the middle of a busy shopping trip on a cold or wet day.

Where: 33 Morgan Arcade

➍ Pieminster

Nothing says cosy autumn vibes like a good, old-fashioned pie and mash. And these guys really know their pies – they’ve been making them for more than 20 years.

They do a range of classic, meaty, veggie, gluten-free and vegan pies, all served with mash and gravy. A perfect place to warm up and watch the world – or at least shoppers on St Mary Street – go by. Where: 35 St Mary Street

Navigating Autumn

Top Tips for Health and Well-being

As summer fades and autumn arrives, staying active and positive can be a challenge with the shorter days and darker mornings. However, maintaining your energy and managing stress through exercise and nutrition can greatly benefit your mental health. Here are some tips to help you stay healthy and upbeat throughout the autumn season.

Explore Local Workout Classes

In Cardiff, there are plenty of workout classes that can fit both your schedule and budget. For group-based fitness sessions, consider Studio Tarw in Cardiff city centre. Their classes are tailored to accommodate busy lifestyles, offering a fantastic opportunity to stay active and socialise.

If you work from home or stay home with the children, try using the Downward Dog app, which offers free yoga sessions suitable for all levels. This app focuses on stretching and breathing techniques, which are excellent for maintaining joint health and managing stress.

Additionally, you can find free HIIT workouts on YouTube channels such as Natacha Oceane and Chloe Ting. These videos offer a range of difficulty levels and can be done at home, targeting different areas of your body or providing full-body workouts to keep your heart rate up.

Engage in Writing Practices

Writing can be a powerful tool for managing your emotions and

reducing stress. In Cardiff, you might find local writing groups or workshops at places like the Cardiff Central Library or independent bookshops that could offer a supportive environment for journaling and creative writing.

Consider starting a gratitude journal or simply jotting down your thoughts and goals. According to the National Institute of Health, journaling can help decrease mental distress and promote healthy habits. By setting specific goals for the coming months, you can focus your energy and reduce anxiety.

Maintain a Healthy and Balanced Diet

Eating well is crucial for balancing hormones and supporting overall health. You can find a range of fresh produce at local markets like Riverside Market or organic stores like Beanfreaks. BBC Good Food also offers a variety of recipes that are perfect for warming up on chilly autumn evenings and don’t cost a penny to access. Even with a busy schedule, focusing on nutrition will help you maintain energy and well-being.

By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can work towards fostering a healthier and more positive outlook this autumn.

Brewing a Better Future

Cardiff's Refill Cup Scheme Kicks Off

This month, the Welsh capital is rolling out an exciting new initiative designed to transform how we enjoy our coffee on the go. The Cardiff Refill Return Cup scheme, Wales’ first of its kind, offers a simple and eco-friendly way for locals to reduce waste. You can now ‘borrow’ a reusable takeaway cup from a participating café, use it, and then return it to be cleaned and reused.

Brought to life by FOR Cardiff with a generous £90,000 boost from the UK government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, this innovative scheme is powered by a partnership with environmental charity City to Sea. Thanks to their awardwinning Refill app, Cardiffians and visitors alike will easily locate spots to pick up and drop off these reusable cups.

The pilot phase of this scheme will be running through to March 2025, aiming to cut down on waste and tackle pollution and litter across the city. Researchers from the University of Greenwich and Cardiff University will track the scheme’s impact, hoping to provide a model for similar initiatives across the UK.

Several Cardiff cafés and coffee shops have already joined the movement, including Waterloo Tea at Wyndham Arcade, Pettigrew Bakeries (with three locations: Castle Arcade, Bute Park and Roath), Da Coffee (at Tramshed Tech and One Central Square), and Bird & Blend Tea. To sweeten the deal, these venues are offering a 15p discount on coffee for anyone using the Cardiff Refill Return Cup scheme.

Here’s how it works:

1. Sign Up: Participating cafes will provide reusable cups and customers can use the Refill app to get started (no charges involved).

2. Grab & Go: When you buy coffee, the barista will scan a QR code on your Refill Return Cup using the app, granting you temporary use of the cup.

3. Return Reminder: The app will remind you where and when to return the cup. If you return it within two weeks, there’s no charge for the scheme.

4. Cycle of Reuse: Once returned, the cup is cleaned and ready to be used again by someone else, over and over!

Join the movement and help Cardiff make a positive environmental impact, one cup at a time.

Autumn Home De ´ cor with Plant + Pot

We are a nation of plant lovers.

Around 40% of Brits have up to seven plants in their homes, according to a survey commissioned by bedroom retailer Feather & Black.

As the autumn chill sets in, many of us will be looking to create a cosy sanctuary to spend those long nights cwtched up inside. What better way to bring the outdoors indoors than by replenishing our house plant collection?

Rhian from Plant + Pot in Cardiff’s Morgan Quarter has given her expert advice for how to change up your home décor to match the changing seasons.

“This autumn, look for plants that can survive lower-light conditions to give your house a bit of greenery and life in those long dark evenings,” Rhian said

“At Plant + Pot, we’d recommend looking for hardy plants at this time of year – think Monsteras, Crotons, Snake Plants, ZZ plants and Calatheas – to add some colour into your rooms.

“For some low-maintenance leafage, ZZ plants are perfect additions to your home. They’ve got nice chunky roots so don’t need to be watered as frequently as other plants and can survive in minimal sunlight.

“Our favourite plant this autumn is a Snake Plant. They’re gorgeously green and beginner-friendly plants which are very difficult to kill (always a bonus!) and are amazing air purifiers – making them perfect for city-dwellers as they naturally remove many toxic pollutants from the air we breathe.

“We couldn’t not include Calatheas in this list - they’re just so beautiful! A little trickier to take care of, if you’re ready to take on a slightly more challenging plant you’ll feel really satisfied when you see it thrive. Calatheas come in so many different varieties, you’ll be able to find a different one to match every room in your house no matter the décor.

“We’re always updating our in-store reduced shelf, so there are always some nice bargains waiting for you there, and we offer student discount – perfect for freshers looking to add some plant love to halls.

“We’re always here at Plant + Pot for advice, recommendations, and plant chats – feel free to pop along to our store in the Morgan Quarter to say hello!”

Plant + Pot carry a huge selection of indoor and outdoor plants, as well as regularly hosting plant workshops from their dedicated workshop space.

Historic shopping arcades buck national footfall trends thanks to city centre gigs

Asummer of music has resulted in Cardiff bucking UK-wide trends – with historic shopping arcade

Morgan Quarter seeing a 10 per cent increase in footfall from 2023.

This summer saw the likes of Pink, the Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift all bring huge stadium shows to the capital, having a positive knock-on effect on the Morgan Quarter.

Established in 1896, the Morgan Quarter is comprised of the Royal and Morgan Arcades and consists of 63 independent stores and unique brands.

The Welsh Retail Consortium reported that Wales suffered an overall decline in retail footfall of 4.1 per cent this June and saw a further decline of 3.1% in July.

In contrast, the Morgan Quarter saw footfall increase by 10% from 2023 year in June and 8% in July, with many of the Morgan Quarter businesses reporting record-breaking profits over the summer - a major turnaround from 2023.

Morgan Quarter business Astrid and Miyu thrived both on gig days and the days that followed.

Their in-store services, like welded bracelets and tattoos, particularly flourished with Taylor Swift fans due to her fanbase’s tradition of friendship bracelets.

Hannah Morgan, store manager of Astrid and Miyu Cardiff, said: “We saw a lot of business the days that followed the gigs, especially with Taylor [Swift].

“The gigs brought a lot of customers to Cardiff that didn’t know we were here, so it was really positive for us.”

Another business that thrived was Slunks, an award-winning hair salon located in the Morgan Arcade. Slunks saw an increase in appointments during the months dominated by city centre gigs, especially for their hair tinselling service.

Chelsea Thompson, owner and stylist at Slunks, said: “Tinsel is a service we offer all year round, but when there’s a gig in the centre we find we get so many bookings”

“Anytime there’s a big gig in town such as Taylor Swift or Harry Styles, it brings a lot of business to the salon, and we will create packages suited to these events”.

Owner of city centre café, Maple and Bean, Abbie Downey shared the ‘Swift’ sentiments.

Abbie said: “Taylor Swift’s visit to Cardiff in particular brought lots of people into Maple and Bean.”

Morgan Quarter centre manager, Marika Jones, said: “We’re delighted that so many of our tenants experienced a positive June as a result of the city centre gigs.

“It’s been wonderful seeing visitors attending the gigs discover our arcades.”

Carolyn Brownell, executive director of FOR Cardiff, Cardiff’s Business Improvement District, said: “We’re delighted to support businesses in the city centre, especially during such an exciting time.

“The gigs that took place across this city this summer have been an amazing way of putting Cardiff on the map, elevating its national and international profile.

“As the city’s Business Improvement District, FOR Cardiff are proud to support the hospitality industry in the city centre, supporting our local businesses to position the city centre as the premier city destination to visit this summer.”

Where to stay

➊ Portals Hills, Calvia

Nestled between Bendinat and Portals, just a ten-minute walk from the beach, Portals Hills offers stunning views of the Mediterranean, surrounded by palms and lush greenery.

Located in one of the island’s most exclusive areas, the boutique hotel exudes luxury with a cosmopolitan flair, blending modern architecture, fine dining and premium services.

Its 30 suites and exclusive penthouse, furnished by Fendi, deliver a Miami-inspired Mediterranean experience. The spa features organic, locally-made products, providing pure, calming treatments. While the treatment rooms are beautiful, I recommend the serene outdoor Wellness Pavilion for a truly relaxing experience.

Dinner can also be served outside poolside, or in the glass-walled restaurant, with farreaching views past the Palms and over Portals and beyond.

➋ Hotel Esplendido, Soller

Overlooking the picturesque Port of Soller and framed by the Tramuntana Mountains, Hotel Esplendido is a historic gem in one of

Mallorca’s most charming villages. Built in 1954, the hotel remains a beloved destination. Our room was a perfect blend of retro style and modern comfort, featuring botanical green wallpaper and dark wood doors opening to a large terrace with bay views and abundant natural light. The hotel offers 74 rooms and suites with garden or sea views, many with terraces. The décor combines vintage radios, mirrors and period-style furnishings with modern bathrooms.

The hotel boasts two pools: a larger family pool and a serene infinity pool, both accessible via the spa. The design of the hotel ensures ample space and privacy, making it feel spacious and airy, with attentive yet unobtrusive staff.

You can book here https://www.esplendidohotel.com/

➌ Can Bordoy, Palma

Can Bordoy, an urban oasis just minutes from Palma Cathedral, features lush gardens seamlessly integrated inside and out.

Our room was a blend of Art Deco elegance and greenery, with velvet walls, burnished mirrors and ultramarine accents. It included a teal velvet-empress bed, Art Deco furniture, and a stand-alone bath by full-length windows with cocoa shutters for privacy.

The hotel offers two pools and a spa. We enjoyed the rooftop pool, which provides stunning 360-degree views of the city, cathedral, and port. The glass-bottomed pool creates a striking effect and touches like embroidered towels and a vintage phone enhance the experience. At the back of the hotel, a tranquil pool area under citrus trees is perfect for relaxed alfresco dining and often shared with small, sunbathing birds.

Hygge is here

It’s officially that time of year: the nights are getting longer and the air is getting colder. All we want to do is snuggle down, put our PJs on and get cosy. And now, you can do just that – all in the name of Hygge.

Hygge is a way of life in Denmark and Norway which encompasses all things comfort. The word describes a quality of cosiness that promotes feelings of contentment. At its core, this is simply about romanticising the changing of seasons and finding joy in the little things to make those dark, cold evenings a little easier to bear. The best part? You can live as the Danish do and bring hygge straight into your home.

Head to some of our favourite spots to grab these essentials and transform your home into a hygge haven…

Seasonal flowers from Secret Garden Florist

The leaves may have started falling from the trees, but the Secret Garden Florist (located in Cardiff Market) provides stunning blooms all year long. A bunch of fresh flowers is the best way to transform your home, bringing joy into your space.

Soy candles from BlW m

Nothing says cosy like dim lights and scented candles, and Blŵm on Fairoak Road offers a great selection. The coffee shop’s walls are lined with Cardiff-made homeware products which are guaranteed to bring hygge vibes home.

Baked goods from Bro/d

When you’ve settled on your sofa and lit your candles, the only thing missing is a sweet treat. Brød – Danish Bakery – supplies comforting snacks better than anyone. Stock up on cinnamon rolls or custard spandauers to fuel your ‘me-time’.

Ground coffee from Hard lines

Wash your pastry down with a cup of joe, roasted in the heart of Wales. Hardlines, in Canton and Gwaelod-y-Garth, sell their rich, smooth coffees for you to enjoy from the comfort of your own home. Even better – with their coffee subscription service, you don’t need to leave the house to buy some.

Eva Ashley Bridal

They’re already dressing brides to the nines in Swansea and Tonypandy, but now Eva Ashley Bridal is launching a brand new store in Cardiff. Known for their gorgeous gowns, fashion expertise and luxury shopping experience, the capital’s brides-to-be will be in safe hands following this exciting new launch.

Set up and run by two sisters – Rebecca and Rachel –personalisation and passion are at the heart of the Eva Ashley Bridal stores. The sisters pride themselves on understanding their brides and believing in their products. The result is a seamless in-store experience which takes the stress out of the big dress decision.

“We connect with our clients, making sure we’re listening to everything they have told us during the appointment and treating them how they deserve,” the sisters say. “We are a family-run business,” they add, “and without this family warmth, we couldn’t make our brides feel like we are relatable – they feel safe with us and want to be part of what we offer.”

The sisters have taken the bridal world by storm here in Wales, and walking through the Eva Ashley Bridal doors is like being transported into white dress heaven. “We do not want to offer dresses that are saturated across all bridal stores,” explains Rebecca and Rachel, “we want you to find a dream dress that is special but so different.” And, with champagne, chocolates and exclusive goody boxes to boot, the fitting experience is a treat from start to finish.

A friendly and welcoming approach to the world of fashion is key to Eva Ashley Bridal’s success in Rebecca and Rachel’s eyes. “We are extremely personable, treating each bride with that exclusivity she deserves. That’s what sets Eva Ashley Bridal apart.” And soon, in what they’re calling “a complete rebirth,” the team at Eva Ashley Bridal will be able to give this experience to many more brides across Wales, as they prepare to bring their beautiful boutique to the capital.

is Landing in Cardiff

“Cardiff is an incredible city and the new store is definitely going to capture everybody’s hearts,” says the sisters. Hidden away in an iconic arcade, Eva Ashley Bridal’s third store will ooze quiet luxury and reflect the classy character of Cardiff’s Victorian and Edwardian arcades. Not only this, but making the move to Cardiff means that Eva Ashley Bridal can bring the wedding-wear game to a whole new level.

“The move to Cardiff will allow us to stock more dresses without compromising the customer experience. Also, the layout is set more exclusively and privately to elevate this special time,” shares Rebecca and Rachel. The Cardiff store is set to be triple the size of Eva Ashley Bridal’s previous stores, making for a memorable space.

Although the official opening date of the Cardiff store is still yet to be announced, there is already plenty to look forward to. “When we open, customers will enjoy a private catwalk in the arcade, with a drinks reception hosted by The Ivy in our new store,” says Rebecca and Rachel.

“We’re excited to offer our Bring a Bride promotion too. If you “bring a bride” to the launch you will get a £100 voucher redeemable for any service or dress balance, and the new bride will also have the same gift. This offer applies even if you have bought your dress from us already,” they added. If that wasn’t already enough, the sisters shared that they will launch their new and exclusive VIP package in the Cardiff store. This will offer the bride and her party balloons, grazing boards and bubbly during her fitting.

With so much in the works already, it is clear that the Eva Ashley Bridal store is pulling out all the stops ahead of its new launch. “The experience in our Cardiff store will be so memorable but very polished,” the sisters beam. “The whole process will be luxurious and less gimmicky. With this launch, we are now able to offer our brides a more exciting experience from start to finish.”

To stay up-to-date with all things Eva Ashley Bridal, follow the store on Instagram (@evaashleybridal), check out their website (www.evaashley.com), or pay them a visit in Swansea, Tonypandy or soon, Cardiff.

Empowering Young Girls in Cardiff

How Y Girls is Changing Lives One Mentor at a Time

In the heart of Cardiff, a transformative project is quietly making a profound difference in the lives of young girls. The Y Girls project, run by YMCA Cardiff, is more than just a mentoring programme—it’s a lifeline, a source of empowerment and a safe space where girls aged 9-14 can develop the confidence, skills and resilience needed to thrive in today’s challenging world.

The Y Girls project is designed to address the unique challenges faced by young girls growing up in Cardiff. Today, more than ever, girls are navigating a complex landscape of societal expectations, mental health pressures and the often damaging influence of social media. For many, this journey can feel overwhelming and isolating. Y Girls steps in to offer much-needed support, providing one-on-one mentoring and group activities that focus on building self-esteem, fostering positive relationships and empowering girls to believe in themselves and their potential.

The impact of Y Girls is undeniable. At the core of the program are the dedicated volunteer mentors who work closely with each participant, creating a bond of trust and understanding. Over 12 months, mentors meet regularly with their mentees, providing a consistent, supportive presence that is often missing in the lives of these young girls. These sessions go beyond just conversations—they are about setting achievable goals, celebrating small wins and developing the tools to navigate life’s challenges with confidence.

The mentors, many of whom are community members passionate about youth development, are trained to guide the girls through discussions on crucial topics like self-worth, healthy relationships and emotional well-being.

One of the most powerful aspects of Y Girls is the way it helps participants break down barriers and overcome personal struggles. For many girls, being part of Y Girls is the first time they feel truly heard and supported. “I feel more comfortable and confident to share things now and to ask for advice,” says one young participant. This sense of comfort and openness is a testament to the safe, nurturing environment that Y Girls creates. It is within this space that the girls begin to understand that they are not alone in their experiences and that there are supportive adults who genuinely care about their futures.

The ripple effects of the Y Girls project extend far beyond the direct participants. As these girls grow in confidence and self-awareness, they carry these qualities into their schools, families and communities. Many of the girls who have been through the programme become advocates for positive change, using their voices to encourage others and challenge the status quo. The project is also creating a network of empowered young women who support each other and work together to build a more inclusive and understanding Cardiff.

YMCA Cardiff is committed to expanding the reach and impact of Y Girls, ensuring that more young girls across Cardiff can benefit from this life-changing support. But they can’t do it alone. The organisation is actively seeking community partners, volunteers, and funding to sustain and grow this vital programme.

The Y Girls project is a shining example of how a focused, community-driven initiative can create meaningful change. It’s not just about mentoring—it’s about building a brighter, more inclusive future for Cardiff’s young girls. For those who have witnessed its impact firsthand, it’s clear: Y Girls is more than just a project; it’s a movement.

If you’d like to learn more about Y Girls or get involved, visit YMCA Cardiff’s website or follow them on social media. Together, we can empower the next generation of strong, confident women in Cardiff.

Cardiff's Run Clubs: Where Fitness Meets Friendship

If you’ve been inspired by the 27,500 runners taking to the streets of the city in the Cardiff Half Marathon this October, we are here to help you find your running pack.

Strava’s Year in Sport Report shows 78% of their athletes use exercise to combat feelings of loneliness. Cardiff is home to a thriving social running scene with run clubs meeting up all over the city on weekdays and weekends. These clubs have different goals, members and purposes – some are focussed on slow, chatty 5km runs, others have more technical plans working towards longer distance races, but they all have community at heart.

Here’s a selection of run clubs near you…

Pull Up Recordings Run Club

Birthed by Pull Up Recordings, an organisation on a mission to help young people make the most of their twenties, this club meets every Sunday afternoon for a fun (sometimes hungover) 3km or 5km loop of Roath Park followed by an ice cream or pint. Members get a friendly boost of motivation from one another and your furry friends are also welcome.

Run Strong Academy

Run Strong Academy is part of Cardiff Bay’s fitness hub B42 and offers more structure compared to other more social-focussed clubs, making it a good option if you are training towards a specific event or running goal. Their 6-week programmes have proven results with members smashing 5km personal bests and half marathons.

Love Live Light Run Club

Hosted by Pontcanna’s healing hub, Love Live

Light, and fitness trainer Lauren Green, this Friday night run club gives party vibes without the booze. You won’t miss them – the club runs a chatty 5km with glow sticks and meets back at Love Live Light for food, non-alcoholic bevs and a good ol’ natter. They are all about putting your wellness first and have created a welcoming space for individuals to join alone or with friends where they can challenge themselves while having fun.

The Run Club Cardiff

The Run Club Cardiff is a judgement-free community focussed on moving more and meeting like-minded people. If you’re looking for something to fill your Tuesday evenings, this is the place to be. They welcome all paces and meet at various locations across the city from Roath to the bay and running routes range from 5km to 7km. Find them on Instagram (@therunclubcardiff) for regular updates.

Hardlines Run Club

Calling all coffee-loving runners, this is the one for you. The Hardlines Run Club was created by the coffee roastery and cafe during the pandemic. Four years later, they sare going strong, meeting every Thursday at 6:30pm for an easy-paced 5km-8km run around Cardiff’s green spaces. The club has never been about running fast or far. Instead, it is a tool for community and collaboration with brands around the world. So far they have partnered with companies in Berlin, Copenhagen and London.

No matter your running motivation – be it chasing a speedy 5km time, finding new friends or a romantic partner, or catching up with friends over jogs rather than drinks – we’re sure you won’t regret joining one of Cardiff’s friendly run clubs.

Autumnal Walks in Cardiff

It’s safe to say that autumn in Cardiff feels pretty magical. The crisp air and falling leaves create the perfect setting for leisurely walks and cosy coffee breaks. If you’re looking to explore some lesser-known spots this season, here are a few hidden gems to tick off during your autumn wanderings.

Cefn Onn Park

On the northern edge of Cardiff, you’ll find Cefn Onn Park with its picturesque surroundings and tree-lined paths with autumnal hues. Although not a complete hidden gem, you might be excited to discover that Green Door On Tour now serves fresh coffee and sweet treats on weekends, weather permitting, from their charming coffee van.

Fforest Fawr Sculpture Trail

If you’re in the mood for something different, head just outside Cardiff to Fforest Fawr, near Castell Coch. The Sculpture Trail is a quietly-kept secret that combines art and nature, making it a unique spot for an autumn walk. The sculptures along the path add an extra element of surprise and intrigue to your walk. The little ones are guaranteed to love it!

Insole Court Gardens

For a walk that combines history and natural beauty, Insole Court Gardens in Llandaff is a must-visit. Surrounding the beautiful Victorian mansion, the gardens offer peaceful pathways lined with trees that burst into autumnal colours. The hidden walled garden is particularly charming, with its quiet corners perfect for unwinding. There’s also a cosy tearoom on-site, where you can enjoy a warm drink after your stroll.

All of these spots are dog-friendly, so why not bring your four-legged friends along to enjoy the crunch of the autumn leaves with you?

ParalympicsGB sent a team of 215 athletes, with 10% being Welsh or residing in Wales. Despite representing only 5% of the UK population, Wales continues to ‘punch above its weight.’ The team’s second-place finish in the medal table showcases the calibre and commitment of its athletes and support systems. Welsh athletes delivered remarkable performances, sharing unique experiences and stories that highlighted the highs and lows of competitive sport.

Of the 21 athletes in Paris, four were competing in their first Paralympics. The 22nd Welsh member of ParalympicsGB was Steffan Lloyd, the ‘pilot’ for James Ball in tandem track cycling. Lloyd serves as Ball’s sighted guide, taking the front seat while Ball, visually impaired, rides as the ‘stoker.’ Together, they won gold in the B 1000m time trial.

The first Welsh medal of the Games was won by Paul

Karabardak who was competing in his 5th Games, taking a table tennis Bronze to go alongside his bronze and silver medals from Tokyo. Rob Davies’ silver in the MS1 men’s singles started a run of silvers from other sports towards the end of the week; but Tom Matthews and Josh Stacey didn’t have the same luck in their singles, doubles and mixed events. Both with 2 Games experience, there is plenty more to come from these young men.

Matt Bush took the first gold medal of the Welsh haul as he stormed through the Men’s K44 +80kg Taekwondo event. Matt had been plagued by injury, which had prevented him from contesting the same sport in Tokyo but had also prevented him from competing in the F46 Javelin event in Rio 2016. This was 3rd time lucky for Matt.

Beth Monro, who debuted at the Tokyo 2021 Paralympics and brought home a silver medal, had high hopes of stepping

Photos: @paralympics, Sport Wales

onto the podium once again, this time for gold. However, Taekwondo proved unforgiving. Still, Beth is a true fighter, so keep an eye on her in LA.

Competing in her second Games, Jodie Grinham made history as the first pregnant woman to win a Paralympic medal. Seven months pregnant, she claimed gold with her mixed team compound partner Nathan MacQueen, and bronze in the individual event, even pausing mid-shot as the baby moved. Grinham’s performance proved pregnancy is no barrier to excelling in sport.

The gold rush kicked off on Saturday, 1st September, with James Ball and Steffan Lloyd’s victory, followed by Ben Pritchard’s gold in PR1 men’s single sculls rowing, Sabrina Fortune’s gold and World Record in the F20 women’s shot put, and 17-year-old Rhys Darbey swimming the second leg of the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay. Three days later, Rhys added a silver in the S14 men’s 200m individual medley, marking the start of a promising career.

Georgia Wilson then began her events – the Equestrian Individual Event Grade II and Individual Freestyle Event Grade II. She started by adding a bronze to the two other bronze medals she won in Tokyo, but then took a silver in the Freestyle. She and her horse, Sakura, make a formidable team – not having been off the podium for any of their international starts.

The ParalympicsGB athletics team featured six athletes, including five throwers. Two were first-time Paralympians: Funmi Oduwaiye (F64 Shot Put and Discus) who impressively finished 5th, and Harrison Walsh (F64 Discus) who placed 7th. The other four athletes had a combined 16 Paralympic appearances. Hollie Arnold (F46 Javelin) earned a bronze, adding to her Tokyo bronze and Rio gold, making Paris her 5th Games. Sabrina Fortune took gold in her 3rd Games, while Aled Davies (F63 Shot Put) secured silver, continuing his medal streak since 2012. Olivia Breen, competing in her 4th Games, narrowly missed bronze in the T38 long jump and fell short of the T38 100m final.

The final medals came from Phill Pratt, who led the GB wheelchair basketball team to silver, and Laura Sugar, who defended her KL3 canoeing title. Laura is a standout athlete, having competed in athletics at the 2016 Rio Paralympics before switching to canoeing in 2021.

Wales was represented in 12 of the 22 sports at the Games, winning medals in 10 of them. Welsh talent shone across a variety of sports, including fencing, where Gemma Collis, in her fourth Paralympics since debuting at London 2012, narrowly missed out on a medal in the Women’s Épée and Sabre (Category A). David Smith, competing in his fifth Paralympics, aiming for a third consecutive gold in the BC1 individual Boccia event. However, Paris presented tough challenges, both in the individual competition and the BC1/2 team event.

These Games were a tremendous success, with Welsh athletes winning the most medals since Beijing and medalling in all but two sports they competed in. The Paris organisers also set a new standard for parity between the Paralympics and Olympics. As the late Anthony Hughes, DSW’s former Performance Manager, would say: “The future is bright – the future is Welsh.”

TEAM WALES BUSINESS CLUB

The Team Wales Business Club is an opportunity to celebrate the talent of Welsh athletes competing in the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games.

The events, held throughout the year across Wales, give a unique insight into the athlete’s journeys throughout their career, overcoming adversity, and the overwhelming highs, and the wider overview of Team Wales and the key people behind the athletes.

The Business Club, launched in September 2023 at The Royal Mint Experience also allows guests to hear about the Team Wales brand and the importance of the organisation for sport within Wales. It also highlights the importance of driving the business network across current stakeholders, and future partners, whilst putting Welsh businesses on the national and international stage.

The Commonwealth Games is the only multi-sport event that integrates athletes and athletes with disabilities as one team – Team Wales prides itself on the ability to unite multiple sports, for both the main Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Each event is unique, with a headline subject as the core topic of discussion, where we bring together inspirational athletes and passionate businesses to discuss these topics in an open forum. The events are ideal for networking with like-minded individuals. All revenue generated from these events contribute to supporting the athletes travelling and competing at the Commonwealth Games.

Leon Stapleton

From Whiteboard to Football Field

Leon Stapleton, the founder of We Make Footballers Cardiff, has been named one of the 14 entrepreneurs selected as Start Up Loans’ 2024 Ambassadors.

After a decade as a secondary school teacher, Leon became disillusioned with the profession and decided to pursue a new career. A lifelong football enthusiast and Cardiff City FC fan, Leon discovered the UK-wide franchise, We Make Footballers, and saw an opportunity to bring it to Wales.

With the help of a £15,000 Start Up Loan, Leon launched the first We Make Footballers franchise in Cardiff, providing football training for children aged 4-12. The loan allowed him to purchase essential equipment, secure venues, hire coaches and develop marketing materials to grow the business. Now, his football academy offers young players a fun and supportive environment to improve their skills, while enriching the local community.

As a 2024 Ambassador, Leon’s journey will inspire other aspiring entrepreneurs through a series of local and national events. The Start Up Loans Ambassadors programme, in its ninth year, celebrates business owners who have launched ventures using the government-backed scheme.

Leon is excited to be part of the programme, saying, “I hope my story can inspire others to turn their passion into a business.”

Selected for their resilience, creativity and determination, these Ambassadors aim to motivate others to turn their passions into successful enterprises.

Manumit Coffee Roasters, a Cardiff-based coffee company, is dedicated to brewing dignity and freedom into every cup. Through ethical sourcing, a strong commitment to empowerment and community engagement, Manumit provides meaningful employment and training opportunities to survivors of modern slavery, helping them rebuild their lives. All profits are reinvested into local and global anti-slavery initiatives, furthering their mission to fight modern slavery at its root.

In 2024, there are an estimated 11,000 victims of modern slavery in the UK, a sobering statistic that underscores the critical need for support, awareness and systemic change. These individuals, often hidden in plain sight, require assistance to escape their circumstances and build new lives. Manumit Coffee Roasters stands at the forefront of this mission, using coffee as a vehicle for change.

“The ethical side of our non-profit business is three-pronged,” explains Dai Hankey, who co-founded the company with Nick Davis in 2017. “It’s about providing direct support for survivors within our organisation, ensuring we ethically source our coffee beans and donating our profits to local and global anti-slavery projects.” This holistic approach is central to

Manumit Coffee Roasters

Empowering Survivors of Modern Slavery Through Ethical Coffee

Manumit’s identity and purpose, aiming to create long-lasting change in the lives of survivors.

Creating a supportive and nurturing environment is essential to the company’s ethos. “If someone faces issues with the job centre, their refugee status, or other challenges, we have a pastoral support worker to assist them,” Dai says. This personalised support helps survivors navigate the complexities of their new lives while fostering a sense of security and belonging. The company also strives to model a healthy working culture, especially for its female employees. “We aim to ensure a respectful and safe working environment,” Dai explains. “Survivors need to feel that everyone here, especially the men who work at Manumit, are safe to be around. We also emphasise their inherent worth and encourage them to explore their interests and passions.”

For instance, Alex*, a survivor who was trafficked from Albania and now works for Manumit, is a talented artist. The company recognised her talent and encouraged her to be creative, allowing her to design the labels for their coffee. Her artwork is now featured on all of Manumit’s packaging, a testament to her resilience and creativity. When asked about her time working at Manumit, Alex* shared: “I used to feel very hopeless, but since

joining Manumit, my life has changed direction. I feel free and am starting to pursue my dreams. The support here has helped me build confidence and work towards a better future.”

Manumit is equally committed to ethical sourcing, ensuring their coffee beans are procured from farmers who practice fair labour. Their rigorous research and close relationships with farmers ensure a slavery-free supply chain from crop to cup.

Co-director Nick Davis discovered Zukuka Bora, a Ugandan coffee company that pays farmers promptly and supports them during non-harvest periods. “Zukuka Bora’s model ensures fair compensation and community development,” Nick says, having worked closely with them in Uganda.

By choosing Manumit Coffee Roasters, customers enjoy high-quality, ethically sourced coffee while contributing to a movement that champions human dignity, freedom, and systemic change. Every cup makes a difference in the fight against modern slavery.

A Soup Recipe to Squash the Autumn Chill

It’s October. We’re well and truly into Autumn - the leaves are falling and the days are getting shorter. It’s around this time that we consider lighting up the fire for the first time since summer and cosying up with a blanket as the rain pours outside. For me, this marks the start of soup season. Warming broths and stews really come into their own, bringing us comfort from the inside out. Pumpkins and squash are at the height of their season, so what could be more fitting than a sweet, gently spiced soup, filled with the colours of autumn and Halloween?

For this recipe, any pumpkin will do – but I’d steer clear of the ones being sold for lanterns and lean towards the oftenoverlooked eating pumpkins or squash, personally. If you struggle to find a good quality pumpkin to eat, I’d recommend butternut squash, as I find it consistently yields the tastiest results and is widely available.

3kg of pumpkin/squash 1 bay leaf

3 tbsp olive oil 1 sprig of rosemary

1 onion

1L chicken stock (veg if you prefer)

1 stick celery ½ tsp grated nutmeg

1 carrot ½ tsp white pepper

6 garlic cloves 75ml crème fraiche

To serve To Finish

Bread Either:

1 garlic clove Sage leaves

Butter

Butter Or Double cream Rosemary tops

Method

– Preheat oven to 220⁰C fan

– Top and tail the pumpkin/squash, wasting as little as possible.

– Halve lengthwise, scoop out the seeds, then halve again lengthwise into quarters.

– Rub with olive oil, salt and pepper, and roast in the oven for 30-35 minutes (until a knife slides in with little/no resistance).

While the pumpkin roasts, finely mince the onion, celery, carrot and garlic.

– Once cooked, remove the pumpkin, allow to cool slightly, then scoop the flesh away from the skin with a spoon (easier while still warm).

– Place a large pan on medium-high heat and sweat the onion, celery and carrot in 3 tbsp olive oil. After 5 minutes, add the garlic and continue for another 5-7 minutes until the smell is sweet and the mixture has softened.

Add in the bay leaf, rosemary sprig and nutmeg and cook for another 2 mins. Add in the pumpkin and the stock, and simmer on medium for 15 minutes.

– Remove the bay leaf and rosemary and allow to cool slightly, before using an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth (if you don’t have an immersion blender, allow to cool completely before adding to a stand blender).

– Blend in the crème fraiche and the white pepper, and taste for seasoning.

To Serve

Reheat the soup until piping hot. In the meantime, toast some bread and rub it gently with a garlic clove, then spread with butter for a quick garlic bread accompaniment.

To Finish

For a classic autumnal presentation, drop some sage leaves into a pan with butter on medium-high heat, until the moisture has left the leaves and they turn crisp. Top the bowls with 2-3 leaves and a drizzle of the browned butter left in the pan.

For more of a spooky Halloween finish, make a thin spiral of double cream from the centre of the bowls. Using a toothpick, or similar, drag out from the centre of the spiral to the edge of the bowl multiple times to create a spiderweb look. Poke the top of a rosemary sprig into the web to add a ‘spider’.

Fabulous Frights Await

at Wales Millennium Centre This Halloween

Cardiff Castle is host to a number of exclusive, unforgettable events for the whole family. From global headliner artists to outdoor cinemas, when Wales starts to get colder, Cardiff Castle offers new exciting experiences.

As spooky season creeps in, Cardiff prepares its doors for Halloween-themed nights and spooktacular events. Enjoy speciality cocktails in the city centre, open-air movie nights or experience walking through a pumpkin patch.

Grab your popcorn as you embark on a seasonal visit to The Darkened Rooms, one of Cardiff’s best-kept cinema secrets. The Darkened Rooms uses a quaint venue located in or more specifically underneath Cardiff Castle, Cardiff’s oldest and most recognisable landmark.

The 15th Century Undercroft, complete with stonevaulted ceiling, is one of the oldest parts of the Castle. The location is perfectly atmospheric and provides a chilling ambience whilst enjoying some of your favourite Halloween flicks.

Grab your Popcorn

for a Spooky Cinema Evening in Cardiff

Last year, The Darkened Rooms screened four favourites on Halloween night including Hocus Pocus and Beetlejuice. Who knows what this year may have in store?

However, if you’d prefer to stay home this Halloween, here are a few scary film suggestions from FilmProbe that have ties to Cardiff and Wales.

The classic horror flick that must be seen every Halloween is An American Werewolf in London (1981), although the title might state otherwise this film was predominantly filmed in Wales including the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. On the theme of werewolves, the Universal monsters classic The Wolf Man (1941) was set in the fictional Welsh town of Llanwelly and at the ancestral home of the Talbot family, which was filmed at Margam Castle. The film follows Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.) as he returns to Wales to bury his late brother.

If you’d prefer something a little more sinister this Halloween, look no further than Apostle (2018) starring Welsh gem Michael Sheen. Apostle is a grotesque horror film based in the 1900s, centred around an ancient cult. This film is not for the faint of heart and was predominantly filmed in Cardiff. Finally, to continue with one more horrifying feature, World War Z (2013) starring Hollywood’s Brad Pitt has several connections to Cardiff. The zombie apocalypse blockbuster uses Cardiff as a safety zone, where Pitt can visit a facility attempting to make a cure, along with having filmed plenty of the film in Wales.

The menstrual cycle mirrors the four seasons, each phase representing a different season. Autumn corresponds to the pre-menstrual phase that occurs after ovulation as the body prepares for the next bleed. As we embrace autumn in the world around us, let’s explore the golden beauty of the autumn phase of the menstrual cycle.

INNER AUTUMN

Inner Autumn, the pre-menstrual phase, mirrors the harvest season, inviting introspection and a slower pace as days cool and shorten. This reflective period encourages seeking comfort and preparing for the upcoming “winter” of menstruation. Just as nature transitions, the menstrual cycle aligns with these rhythms, embodying internal seasons throughout the month.

HORMONAL HAPPENINGS

l Progesterone Dominates: It takes over from oestrogen, which was dominant in the previous phase.

l Soothing Effects: Progesterone aids sleep, has a calming effect and raises body temperature, promoting a preference for cosy environments.

l Hormonal Dance-Off: Oestrogen dips slightly post-ovulation while progesterone continues to rise. If pregnancy does not occur, both hormone levels decline as the body prepares for menstruation.

l Transition to Inner Winter: Once progesterone production ends, menstruation begins, marking the shift into inner winter.

AUTUMN'S JOYS

Inner Autumn, often challenging due to hormonal shifts and heightened emotions, offers growth and reflection. Like autumn shedding leaves for future growth, this phase encourages letting go of what no longer serves us before menstruation. It’s a time for honest introspection, wrapping up tasks, and slowing down, mirroring nature’s transition into a more reflective, quieter season.

AUTUMN'S SHADOWS

PMS, or Pre-Menstrual Syndrome, common during Inner Autumn, includes symptoms like bloating, fatigue, mood swings, and irritability. This phase may also bring restlessness or disappointment, especially if creative potential feels untapped. It’s normal to experience reduced focus and increased distraction as you transition from a high-energy state to a slower, more introspective period that encourages rest and self-reflection.

AUTUMN TOP 5 TIPS

l Set Boundaries: Limit social events, ask for help with household tasks, reduce your to-do list, finish work on time, and consider taking a break from social media for mental rest.

l More Me Time: Embrace solitude with relaxing activities like baths, massages, or movie days, and communicate your need for space to friends and family.

l Practice Movement: Opt for gentle exercises such as walking, yoga, or pilates, and include light strength training and sauna sessions to aid toxin release.

Menstrual Cycle Seasons

Embracing Inner Autumn

l Nourish Your Body: Eat seasonal foods like pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and figs to stabilise blood sugar and support hormones; enjoy treats like dark chocolate-covered dates.

l Get More Sleep: Establish a calming evening routine by putting away electronics, having an early supper, taking a bath, and ensuring your bedroom is cool and tech-free.

Women in Wales Breaking Barriers in Broadcasting and Tech

In September, a consortium of Welsh organisations launched the Cymru Broadcast Centre (CBC), a state-of-the-art, fully accessible remote production facility in Cardiff. Led by Whisper Cymru, Tramshed Tech, Channel 4, Creative Wales and Cardiff Capital Region (CCR), the CBC aims to redefine accessible broadcasting and foster a more inclusive tech ecosystem in Wales.

Louise Harris, Co-Founder and CEO of Tramshed Tech, emphasised the broader vision: “We’re not just creating great places to work; we’re building an epicentre of tech innovation that reaches far beyond Wales through partnerships with businesses such as Whisper and Channel 4 as well as through innovation programmes and skills training.” Carys Owens, Managing Director at Whisper Cymru, remarked on the significance of CBC’s debut, coinciding with Channel 4’s coverage of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games: “This Centre...means it will help open doors for the next generation of talent.”

The CBC sets new standards for accessibility, featuring colourcoded door frames, textured flooring, ramps with varied surfaces, braille signage and one of Cardiff’s few changing spaces toilets, exemplifying its commitment to inclusivity.

The CBC is part of a broader effort to position Wales as a global leader in inclusive innovation. Tramshed Tech’s initiatives, such as the Female Founder Investor Readiness Programme, Diverse Founders Networking and the Data Inclusivity Network support this vision.
