ELEGANCE AND SOPHISTICATION REDEFINED

A townhouse offers a unique kind of living in a city: its virtues begin with a total privacy in one’s own castle. It offers lovely outdoor spaces in a garden and a roof terrace. Entertaining floors are easily separated from private areas, and an elevator can serve from the lowest level to the top. Rooms can be exceptionally large in scale with high ceilings and spacious windows. The families that developed this townhouse in 1910 had creative ideas and illustrious careers from the beginning to the present day.

HISTORY OF THE TOWNHOUSE

HENRY VILLARD

Henry Villard, the father of the owner of this townhouse, was one of the most elegant and successful figures of 18 is moving effortlessly from journalism to steamships and railroads to founding the predecessor of General Electric. Born in 1835, Henry Villard’s career began as a war correspondent covering the American Civil War and the Austro – Prussian War. He brought German investments into Oregon and California railroads and on his own began acquiring and building railroads, Steam shipbuilders, and newspapers. Villard covered the Lincoln-Douglas debates and the Civil War, which made him a pacifist, and he witnessed a demonstration of Thomas Edison’s “incandescent light bulb” and asked Edison to install a lighting system in his new steamship, the Columbia, the first commercial application of Edison’s light bulb. In 1884 he engaged McKim, Mead and white to build six Brownstone townhouses which form one stately structure and are still present on Madison Avenue just opposite St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

OSWALD GARRISON VILLARD

Henry passed his abilities to his son, Oswald, who graduated from Harvard in 1893, and was a Pioneer in civil rights, author and journalist. From this house, Oswald Villard continued his father’s legacy and wrote books and supported major causes of the day. He lived here from 1911 until his death in 1949.

A UNIQUE CONSTRUCTION

179 East 71st Street was originally built in 1910 by Donald Goodrich as a pair with 177. What was unique about 179 is that it was built using concrete slabs on everyfloor, an uncommon construction material for a townhouse at that time which Mrs. Julia Stanford Villard appreciated when she acquired the house in 1911.

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

The creative Legacy of this house took an extraordinary turn with its owner, Hedda Stern, a prolific artist of the abstract expressionist era who created works in a wide variety of styles well into her 80s and 90s. Her masterpieces are found today in museums worldwide. She was granted a Fulbright Fellowship in painting in 1963 and despite close contact with the masters of the age – including De Kooning, Rothko, Reinhardt, and Jackson Pollock – she always maintained her own artistic style and point of view. She was one of the few women counted among the Abstract Expressionist School. Hedda Stone Left in this house with her husband, Saul Steinberg whom she married in 1944. Steinberg’s half-century of New Yorker drawings added greatly to the magazine’s popularity and prominence. In August of 1951, LIFE Magazine profiled “Steinberg and Sterne: Romanian-born Cartoonist and Artist-Wife Ambush the world with Pen and Paintbrush.”
