A

word from our CEO

Welcome to the Autumn edition of Cara’s “Finding Possible”

It has been a sad few months at Cara as we have seen the passing of a number of our dear and valued clients, as well as staff. We express our sincerest condolences to all the families and loved ones affected during this time.

As I reflect on the fragility of life, I am so honoured to be part of the caring community that we are at Cara, and the wonderful team of support workers who embody the love, service and care we deliver to those we support.

At the recent memorial of one of our dear staff members Moira, I was so encouraged to hear clients and staff alike express their immense gratitude for how Moira, and other Cara staff, go beyond providing supports, becoming an integral part of each other’s lives as we work, share, advocate, support and laugh together whilst delivering great outcomes for our clients.

I am convinced more than ever that our “WHY” at Cara is to create “joy, purpose and belonging” for our clients, staff and broader stakeholders. We share the journey, embracing both the challenges and triumphs. Moira epitomised that heart and our why. In her honour, we are creating an annual “Heart of Cara Award” for staff who embody that spirit.

Our senior leadership team, executive and board members have recently updated Cara’s strategic plan, defining our key focus and objectives for the coming financial year, encompassing:

• Ensuring clients receive person-centred care that delivers joy, purpose and belonging.

• Advocating for clients as we continue to navigate the complex NDIS funding models.

• Ensuring our staff are highly engaged, empowered and trained in order to deliver the best possible service to our clients.

• Building awareness in the disability community of Cara’s value and purpose, and making sure we are agile, focussed and accountable to deliver on that promise.

• Continually pursuing efficiency in our processes and streamlining our systems, to allow our support workers to spend more time delivering best practice supports and outstanding client outcomes.

I hope you enjoy reading the stories in this edition which give a small snapshot of the amazing outcomes we strive for every day to improve the lives of people living with disability.

I want to thank our clients, community, and staff for the important work you do. I am so proud to lead this organisation. Please reach out to me at any time if you have questions, ideas or feedback on how we can improve our partnership in supporting the clients we serve.

Cara brand campaign

We’re not a disablity service. We’re a possibility service.

At Cara, we believe little things make a big difference, bringing joy, purpose, and a sense of belonging to those we serve. That’s why we’re thrilled to launch our bold new brand campaign - one that redefines what support truly means.

Our powerful new brand statement, “We’re not a disability service. We’re a possibility service” captures the essence of what we do every day. We don’t just provide support; we create opportunities for people to dream, achieve, and live life to the fullest. Whether it’s running a marathon, flying a plane, or simply embracing the joy of everyday experiences, Cara is here to help make possibilities a reality.

“I am strong. I am resilient. I am a mother, a daughter, a father, a brother, and a son. I laugh. I cry. I dream and I love to dance.”

These words echo through our campaign, reflecting the individuality, strength, and vibrant personalities of the people we support.

In collaboration with Adelaide-based ad agency BAD Everything, we embarked on an exciting journey to film a campaign that truly represents the Cara community.

Our incredible clients - Paul, Megan, Kylie, Nadia, Gregory, and Nick - are the stars, bringing authenticity and energy to the screen. Alongside them, passionate Cara staff members, from support workers to leadership, helped bring the vision to life.

The commercial is being showcased in cinemas across metropolitan Adelaide, Mt Barker, Murray Bridge, Mt Gambier and Pt Pirie, including Hoyts, Event, Wallis and Reading Cinemas.

Expect the campaign to pop up when you’re scrolling on social media or watching YouTube videos, and keep an eye out for our striking billboards at key locations across Adelaide. Radio and TV advertising will be added to the mix in the coming months.

The new campaign isn’t just about raising awareness; it’s about celebrating the people who make Cara special. It highlights the deep connections between our staff and clients and showcases the real impact of what we do every day.

As one line of our campaign declares, “I’m going to stop at nothing!”

And neither will we.

Vale Moira

Federal Election 2025

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is committed to ensuring that people with disabilities can vote easily in the 2025 Federal Election on 3 May.

To improve accessibility, new rules have been introduced to make it easier for people with disabilities and their carers to vote - whether by mail or before election day. The AEC is also increasing the number of accessible polling places for in-person voting.

You can find polling locations and opening hours on the AEC website, including a search function for accessibility features.

The AEC will also provide assistive technology at selected polling places, including virtual Auslan interpreters, hearing loops, and text-tospeech pens, to support voters with different needs.

If you have any questions, you can contact the NDIA or your NDIS contact for help.

During this process, NDIS participants can continue accessing music and art therapy under their current arrangements.

Empowering people to serve with heart

Enhancing learning and development

At Cara, we believe that a great team is setup for success with great training. Over the past year, our Learning and Development team has undergone a transformation that not only improves the way we work internally but also enhances the care we provide to the people who need it most.

This journey of process improvements has made us more efficient, more capable, and more connected to our clients, and to each other.

In late 2023, we put our learning programs and processes under the microscope. We asked ourselves, “How can we empower our people to serve our clients with even more heart and effectiveness?” The answer was clear: by investing in our people, streamlining our processes, and providing tailored, impactful learning experiences to our staff that align with our values.

We began by improving training delivery methods, increased use of automation, focusing on more agile and flexible approaches that cater to different learning styles. This shift enhanced the efficiency of our training, allowing our staff to immediately apply what they’ve learned in real-time.

With the appointment of Lezel Boks (pictured above) as a Clinical Training Officer, the training team established the Clinical Training function, which has and will continue to have, a significant impact on our organisation.

A Registered Nurse with extensive experience in both nursing and nursing education, Lezel focuses on enhancing the skills and knowledge of our support staff.

We asked ourselves, “How can we empower our people to serve our clients with even more heart and effectiveness?”

She is committed to ensuring our staff are equipped with the necessary competencies and the confidence, gained through comprehensive training, to deliver the highest quality services to our clients.

Moreover, the integration of a more structured and streamlined training process has significantly enhanced operational efficiencies.

By building automated workflows, manual tasks have been reduced, meaning that the training team can focus on what truly matters - delivering exceptional training to all workers,

Our journey to transform our learning and development programs has already led to significant improvements, and we’re just getting started.

which directly translates into providing outstanding support and care to our clients.

One of the most rewarding outcomes of these process improvements is the positive impact on our employee experience.

Our 2023 Engagement Survey provided valuable insights, with employees expressing a strong desire for consistent opportunities for professional growth and enhanced training. In response, we refined our training programs to prioritise accessibility, flexibility, and tailored learning experiences.

Now, after reviewing our 2024 Engagement Survey results, we’re thrilled to see continued progress. Employees have reported feeling

more supported in their development, with increased engagement and a stronger connection to their work.

These enhancements have fostered a more skilled, motivated, and accountable workforce, nurturing a culture of ownership, pride, and confidence. As a result, our team is even better equipped to deliver exceptional care with heart.

Our journey to transform our learning and development programs has already led to significant improvements, and we’re just getting started. Our commitment to continuous growth ensures that we’ll keep refining our training strategies to better support both our team and the clients we serve.

With every step, we’re building a stronger, more skilled workforce dedicated to delivering care with compassion, expertise, and heart. Together, we’re making a lasting impact - and this is only the beginning.

Making waves

Client profile: Kevin, Luke & their housemate

The life-changing benefits of hydrotherapy

At Cara, we are strong advocates for hydrotherapy and the incredible benefits it offers to our clients. This gentle yet powerful therapy has transformed lives, helping individuals improve their mobility, build strength, and enhance their overall wellbeing.

Just ask Kevin.

A few years ago, Kevin found himself wheelchair dependent after suffering a broken hip. Despite his determination, regaining his mobility felt like an uphill battle - until hydrotherapy became part of his routine.

Kevin’s journey with hydrotherapy began thanks to his dedicated Cara Team Leader, Harry, who strongly advocated for him to

access the program. Harry recognised the benefits and fought to ensure Kevin had the opportunity. Not only does Harry accompany Kevin to hydrotherapy sessions each week, but he also supports Kevin’s rehabilitation outside the pool by encouraging the use of exercise bikes and other physiotherapy equipment.

Harry typically enters the water to offer reassurance, provide prompts, and remind clients to stay focused and avoid distractions. He also maintains excellent communication with our clients’ Occupational Therapist Jack, particularly when they begin to tire or experience any health-related concerns.

Kevin with Occupational Therapist Jack
Luke builds his strength in the water

The results have been remarkable. Within just 12 months, Kevin has progressed from being unable to stand to walking again with assistance - a milestone that once seemed out of reach.

But Kevin’s success story doesn’t end there. His experience has inspired his housemates, and now they all attend hydrotherapy sessions, reaping the benefits.

Luke, who wears arm splints and spends the majority of the day in his wheelchair, has experienced remarkable progress through hydrotherapy. Initially, he started in the deeper water, walking laps and completing exercises. Over time, Luke has built enough strength to move into the shallow water, where he continues to walk and engage in targeted exercises. Given his osteoporosis, the buoyancy of the water provides crucial support, allowing him to move more freely and with less strain.

Hydrotherapy has not only improved Luke’s mobility but has also had a profound impact on his overall well-being - bringing him a sense of calm and happiness. With the encouragement and support from Cara staff, he eagerly participates in each session, and afterward, he enjoys a well-earned restful sleep.

buoyancy supports body weight, relieving pressure on joints.

• Improved mobility – Hydrotherapy can aid in increasing range of motion, improving walking technique, and helping individuals stand when they are unable to weight-bear on land.

• Faster recovery – Gentle resistance in the water helps build strength and endurance while minimising strain on the body.

• Mental well-being – Hydrotherapy promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and encourages social interaction, helping individuals feel more connected and confident.

Kevin, Luke and their housemate’s story is a testament to the power of hydrotherapy and the dedication of Cara’s teams in ensuring our clients have access to the best possible supports. At Cara, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the benefits of hydrotherapy - because when given the right support, incredible progress is possible.

Securing hydrotherapy sessions for their other housemate was a six-month journey due to funding challenges, but the wait has proven worthwhile. He began in the deeper water also, where walking was easier, and quickly built muscle strength in his legs. Now, he has progressed to the shallow water and is using a walking frame during hydrotherapy sessions with his occupational therapist.

As he continues to gain strength, there is growing hope that he may soon be able to use the frame to get around while at home. Given that this housemate relies on his wheelchair for transfers and spends most of his day in it, hydrotherapy has become an invaluable opportunity for movement, independence, and physical progress.

Hydrotherapy is proven to support physical and mental well-being in several ways:

• Pain relief – The warmth of the water helps relax muscles and reduce stiffness, while

Brendon’s harvesting fresh choices

Brendon is kicking his goals by preparing and planting seedlings for a vibrant little community garden at home! Nestled within his set of units, this garden is a shared effort where neighbours, who are also Cara clients, come together to nurture it.

Brendon successfully grew his own capsicum and tomato plants, enjoying the fresh, homegrown produce. This achievement has inspired him to expand his garden, growing more vegetables to support his goal of having healthy, fresh food options right at home.

This garden is more than just a patch of soil - it’s a symbol of connection, pride, and collaboration. It brings the community closer, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Taking pride in your home and garden not only beautifies the space but also nurtures well-being and mindfulness!

Cara support workers play a key role, supporting Brendon and all clients in making decisions about what to plant, empowering them to shape a garden that reflects their shared vision. From vibrant flowers to fresh herbs and vegetables, the garden is a true testament to teamwork and creativity.

Here’s to Brendon and the community for growing more than just plants - they’re growing connections and memories.

At Cara, we are committed to supporting our clients in achieving their goals, fostering independence, and creating meaningful experiences. Recently, Cathy and Justine have been making great strides in their community participation (CP) goals, enjoying a variety of exciting events and activities.

Cara has received fantastic feedback from Cathy and Justine’s families, who are thrilled with the communication and images shared around their community participation.

Cathy has been actively achieving her goals, attending the Amplifii Music Festival, Bank SA’s Variety Show at the Fringe Festival, and enjoying a BBQ at Oaklands Park with her mum.

Justine has also been engaging in community events of her choice, making the most of opportunities to connect and explore. Their families are especially delighted with the ongoing updates and Cara’s commitment to ensuring their loved ones are supported in meaningful and enjoyable experiences.

Through tailored activities and strong engagement, Cara continues to make a positive impact, creating inclusive and rewarding opportunities for clients to thrive in their communities.

Empowering lives through community participation

Goals, achievements & possibilities!

Relocating with confidence: Matthew’s exciting transition

Recently, Matthew achieved one of his 2025 goals by relocating to a home better suited to his needs, and his transition has been a great success! Marking an exciting new chapter in his journey, Matthew has settled in well, forming a positive connection with his new housemate, and the two are getting along wonderfully.

With the support of Cara’s dedicated staff, Matthew is exploring new opportunities and engaging in different community activities. A recent highlight was a trip to the beach, where he enjoyed the simple pleasure of feeling the sand between his toes.

Looking ahead, Matthew’s key goals are to attend more community activities that interest him and participate in Day Options more frequently. These experiences will help him build confidence, develop new skills, and strengthen his social connections.

Whether he’s attending local events, joining group outings, or participating in structured programs, Cara will be there to support him every step of the way, helping him find joy, purpose, and a true sense of belonging.

We’re proud to support Matthew and we look forward to seeing him continue to thrive and embrace new experiences!

Georga’s unforgetable night at the Fringe Festival

Georga is off to a fantastic start in 2025, working towards her goal of engaging in community activities to build and maintain friendships.

With the support of Cara staff, she recently had a memorable evening at the Adelaide Fringe Festival with her housemate and support staff - an experience made even more special thanks to tickets generously donated to Cara by Bank SA.

Before heading out, Georga was assisted in preparing for the night, from packing everything she needed, choosing a stylish outfit, and doing her hair for the occasion.

Excited and ready, she caught an access taxi into the city, supported every step of the way.

At Bank SA’s Variety Show, Georga was captivated by the performances, however the loud atmosphere was overwhelming at times.

Georga had an incredible time, making memories and taking another step towards her goal of greater community involvement.

This special night was just the beginning of an exciting year ahead!

Megan’s journey of growth at Cara

From Support Worker to Head Office

At Cara, career paths are as diverse as the people who make up our incredible team. For Megan, what began as a handson role supporting clients has evolved into a secondment position in Payroll - an opportunity that has broadened her skills and deepened her understanding of how Cara operates behind the scenes.

Starting as a Client Support Worker in Short Term Accommodation (STA) with Cara in 2014, Megan spent years directly supporting clients, ensuring they received the best care possible.

In 2020, when COVID-19 temporarily paused STA services, she stepped up to assist Head Office, gaining valuable experience in the Cara Connect and Rostering teams.

This opportunity opened the door to her current secondment role in Payroll, where she has been working since November 2024.

Her permanent role as Workforce Planning Team Leader allows her to apply her expertise in workforce coordination while continuing to support Cara’s mission.

The transition from frontline care to business operations wasn’t without its challenges, but it provided invaluable learning experiences.

“While I loved supporting clients directly, gaining a deeper understanding of Cara from a business perspective has been incredibly rewarding,” she says.

A key focus has been expanding her knowledge of the NDIS, ensuring that funding aligns with clients’ needs, goals, and care requirements.

No matter where you start, the opportunities to grow and make an impact are endless at Cara.

At the heart of Megan’s journey is a passion for empowering people with disabilities to thrive.

“I take great pride in finding creative solutions to help clients overcome physical and intellectual barriers, enabling them to experience life to the fullest.”

Megans commitment extends beyond clients to fellow staff, ensuring support workers feel valued and appreciated - just as she once did in their role.

Throughout her journey, Cara has been a place of opportunity, growth, and flexibility.

“Cara not only values professional development but also understands the importance of work-life balance, allowing me to work from home when needed. Their investment in training has given me the confidence to continue evolving in my career.”

From frontline support to an essential business function, Megan’s story is a testament to Cara’s commitment to developing its people. No matter where you start, the opportunities to grow and make an impact are endless at Cara!

Cara is more than just a workplace - it’s a community built on passion, purpose, and the drive to make a difference to the lives of people living with disabilities.

As one of South Australia’s leading disability service providers, Cara offers a supportive and inclusive environment where employees are valued, empowered, and given opportunities to grow.

Whether working directly with clients or behind the scenes, every team member plays a vital role in helping people with disabilities live fulfilling, independent lives.

With a strong focus on professional development, work-life balance, and career progression, Cara can provide a meaningful career for those who want to create a lasting impact - just like Megan!

Amplifii Music Festival success

A

celebration of music, community & fun!

The Amplifii Music Festival was an incredible event and a resounding success! With an amazing turnout of almost 500 attendees, it was fantastic to see so many people come together to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

Our clients (including pictured Mercedes, Cathy, James, Emily, Justine, Luke and Kevin), had a wonderful time soaking in the energy, from glitter face painting and temporary spray tattoos to an exciting silent disco where haptic vests added a whole new dimension to the experience.

The live music kept everyone entertained, while the dance competitions brought out some serious moves!

Food lovers were in for a treat with an irresistible selection of sweets and baked goods, including a delightful array of cakes and confections from ‘Pete’s Tasty Treats.’

At just 20 years old, Pete has built a thriving microbusiness, baking from the kitchen of the home he shares with his long-term carer.

Faced with the challenges of disability, Pete - who grew up in foster care - refused to let obstacles stand in his way.

With the support of his mentor, and a helping hand from a grant received from the Dame Roma Mitchell Trust, he created his own path to success. Be sure to check out Pete’s Facebook page and discover how he can add a touch of sweetness to your next event!

While the music and dancing continued, Paddy and Rosie, the friendly pet parrots of Instagram’s ‘Napalm Stretch’ fame, made their rounds, delighting festivalgoers with their charm.

Cara is incredibly proud to have sponsored such an amazing event, celebrating inclusivity, music, and community. Seeing our clients and the wider community come together to enjoy such a vibrant and accessible experience was truly special.

Events like the Amplifii Music Festival highlight the importance of connection, creativity, and opportunity for everyone.

We look forward to continuing our support and being part of more unforgettable moments in the future.

We can’t wait for next year’s festival!

Connect with us on

Expo corner Showcasing our services

Cara was excited to be present at both the Adelaide Source Disability Expo in February and the Mount Gambier Disability, Ageing & Lifestyle Expo in March, where our dedicated staff represented us with great pride.

At these events, our team had the opportunity to connect with the community, showcase the valuable services we provide, and share our commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities.

Our staff’s enthusiasm and expertise were evident as they engaged with visitors, answered questions, and highlighted Cara’s mission to deliver high-quality care and support, centred around creating joy, purpose and belonging for all.

It was a wonderful chance to strengthen our connections and further our dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of those we serve.

The faces of Cara

Meet Irshad, Support Worker

As a disability support worker at Cara for over 5 years, Irshad has had the privilege of playing a vital role in enhancing the lives of many individuals with disabilities. Irshad’s primary responsibility involves providing personalised support that not only meets the daily needs of our clients but also fosters their independence and dignity. Throughout his time at Cara, Irshad has contributed to creating an inclusive environment where our clients feel valued and empowered.

Moving to Australia in 2017, Irshad faced significant challenges. With no formal schooling, his job options were limited. He found work as a baker, but longed for something more fulfilling. He spoke with friends about his desire to make a greater impact, and after some research, specifically into disability support work, he came across a traineeship opportunity with Open Colleges School of Health.

After an assessment process Irshad began his traineeship, learning essential skills to support people living with disabilities. As if it was written in the stars, Irshad landed a placement position at Cara, marking the beginning of an enriching career.

As Irshad so thoughtfully expresses, “The most rewarding aspect of being a support worker is witnessing the growth and progress

of the individuals I assist. Every day presents an opportunity to make a positive impact in their lives, whether it’s helping them achieve a personal goal or simply sharing a moment of joy. It’s incredibly fulfilling to be part of their journey and to celebrate their milestones, no matter how small.”

In 2021, Irshad had the honour of being nominated for the South Australian Training Awards and is incredibly proud to share that he won the Trainee of the Year Award for his work as a disability support worker at Cara. This recognition not only highlights his dedication to the field but also brings attention to the vital role disability support workers play in the community.

Working at Cara has been a profoundly rewarding experience for Irshad. The bonds he has formed, the challenges he has overcome, and the successes he has celebrated, both his own and clients, serve as constant reminders of why he chose this career path.

“Every day is an opportunity to make a difference, and I am proud to contribute to the mission of Cara and to the lives of those we serve.”

- A proud statement from Irshad.
