When choosing a photographer to capture those precious childhood memories, one needs to make sure that the photographer’s “style” matches what they are looking for in portraits. My style is somewhat editorial with a LOT of fun. I absolutely LOVE color and LOTS of it. I try to incorporate colors and textures into my work as much as possible. I don’t just take a photograph but I capture a moment in time for you to cherish over a lifetime. Best said, I capture your LIFE for just that moment in time.

Booking your appointment. Your session fee is due at the time you reserve your appoitment. Your session features a custom-styled shoot at your home, both indoors and outdoors, or the natural light studio in Upper Marlboro, MD or an alternate location if you prefer. Between fourtyand fifty portraits featuring detailed, artistic processing of each image will be presented to you in a private online slideshow for sharing with friends and family; a custom online ordering gallery or complimentary portrait design appointment at the studio is also included. It does not include your images, either digital or printed; these are purchased separately.

Before the session. 48 hours prior to your appointment, I’ll call to remind you about your session and talk about any other logistics we need to cover.

The day of the session. Please try to show up or be ready at least 10 minutes prior to your appointment. Just plan it in your drive if applicable, Early is always better than late as it cuts into our time.

Sessions usually take about 1 to 1 1/2 hours We’ll take LOTs of photographs during your session. So many that you’ll wonder if you’ll get to see them all. Don’t worry, I’ll pull only the best of the best for your order session.

Post Production 5.

At the conclusion of our session, I will send you home with a planning packet. Please use this information to note where you plan to place your wall portraits, which family and friends will be receiving images as gifts, and which albums or custom books may be of interest, along with any of our other unique and beautiful keepsakes.

After narrowing it down to the very best of the best I will retouch and edit each image individually, finding color in the most unexpected places and turning your photographs into unique pieces of art. The editng process takes approximately two weeks.

Two weeks after the session, will be your order appointment the we booked after your session. This is where you get to come in and view your proofs and place all final order at this time. Images not ordered are deleted so make sure you order everything you want at this time.

After your order appointment, within two to three weeks all of your prints and/or products you ordered will be delivered to you or can be picked up at the studio.

Order Appointment About two weeks after your session, it will be time to view your images for ordering. We’ll meet at the studio or in the comfort of your own home if more convienent.

We’ll start off the appointment by viewing your images on a slideshow. I will show you several of the prodcuts that I offer and you can touch, feel and handle them all you want. I want you to know exactly what you would be getting!

During your ordering session is when you will order products so all decision makers need to be present.

You’ll choose the images to go into your album, and I can help you choose which images go best with your decor and what sizes will look great over your mantel My clients love that I can help them decide what goes best and where, and when it comes to storyboards, we can switch images around on the spot. *There is a $400 minimum purchase order due at the time of your ordering appointment.

When will my photos be ready?

Once you have placed your order I will begin processing it right away. You can expect your order to arrive within two to three weeks after that.

How can I make my payment?

I accept cash, personal checks, debit and credit cards. Your print and product order payment is due during your order appointment.

What are the two types of sessions?

Our most popular session by far is the custom, signature session, and it is the session most clients have experienced through the years. We also offer our popular Baby and Belly session. This session includes a maternity session and a newborn photo session to be done within the first two weeks of birth. You will receive an 8x10 from each session and a set of custom designed birth announcements.

What happens when I schedule a session?

After booking and holding a date with your session fee, you will receive a brief questionnaire where I’ll get to know a bit about you, your family, your ideal session, and more. What do you enjoy doing together as a family? What details of “ordinary” life feel extraordinary to you and worthy of capturing forever? For instance, I had a client communicate how much the family enjoys “backyard adventures,” with the boys exploring while mom gardens, so we tailored the session to reflect this love. Maybe we’ll document the fun that ensues when Fifi gets a bath, when dad puts down the Blackberry to join a very important tea party, or when everyone pauses for storytime in the master bedroom.

Where does the session take place?

Most sessions take place at your home or another location that is meaningful to you. Clients often say, “but my home doesn’t look like the ones on your website!” and feel that everything must be perfectly decorated and, well, perfect. Please know that just outside the frame in many of my images were toys that didn’t get put away, a patch of lawn in the midst of being landscaped, or a pile of laundry that understandably didn’t quite find its way into a drawer the first week baby arrived. If your session takes place at the studio, I’ll take special care to make sure that the children are comfortable in their new surroundings.

What should I wear?

When you book you’ll receive a {what to wear} style guide that offers wardrobe inspiration and I’m always happy to help you choose outfits from among your favorites, whether they are brought along to a studio session or we delve into the closet together at home. The biggest rule to remember is to be yourself and to be comfortable! Also, ideally, the wardrobe choices will look at home in the rooms where wall portraits will be displayed.

How much time should I plan for the session?

Most often sessions last around 1 to 1 1/2 hours, with a bit longer for newborns. This gives us plenty of time to get to know each other, to have a snack if needed, to “play” instead of merely “pose and smile,” and in the middle of it all to capture a beautiful variety of images. For studio sessions we’ll also spend around 1 to 1 1/2 hours and capture both indoor and outdoor settings. It’s best not to overshedule session day whenever possible so that kids feel fresh and no one is anxious or rushed.

How many people are included in the session?

Sessions are for your immediate family. While the impulse to include cousins and other family members is understandable and a lovely thought, what’s less obvious is that this decision truly turns the session into something completely different and by its very nature less intimate.

Babies and children also find having so many people around distracting and capturing them at their best becomes considerably more challenging.

When will we see our images?

About 2-3 weeks following your session you will receive word that your images are ready for viewing. We’ll decide the one week in person ordering period together and you’ll receive a lovely online slideshow during that week to share with friends. I select the best images from your session to show, typically around 40-50. As one mother laughingly said at her ordering appointment, “Thank you so much for not letting those images where I blinked or looked bad even exist in the universe!” I’d love to help you discuss your favorites, plan a wall gallery, or choose a swatch for your handmade album.

We simply cannot wait to receive our portraits and albums! When will they arrive?

Print and digital orders arrive in about 2-3 weeks. Albums are handmade and arrive around 4-6 weeks after your order is received.

Do you archive session image files?

Purchased images are archived and available for re-order for one year. Unordered images are removed from the system six weeks after your session to make room for new clients. While I completely understand that life is busy, timely orders are essential for keeping the studio running smoothly and allowing me to devote time to each client.

I love all of the images. How will I ever decide?

This is by far the number one question clients ask, and most decide simply NOT to decide at all! Instead they select first a “have them all” option, whether a printed set of 5x7s or a modern or keepsake album. While you then may choose a few more favorites for wall displays or gift prints for grandparents, the “hard work” of choosing that we, as busy people, seldom find time for, will already be done.

What is the investment?

Clients generally reserve anywhere between $1500 and $6000 for their session. This amount allows them to have each of the images from their gallery in an exquisite handmade album as well as wall art including gallery wrap canvases and high-resolution digital images with reprinting rights. I realize that custom portraiture is an investment and am honored when clients choose me to create artwork for their family. After all, our portraits are one of the few significant purchases we make that will someday be owned and cherished by the very subjects in them! In other words, my daughter will likely never own my much-loved Miele vacuum, but she will adore the portraits of our family all the days of her life, as will her children’s children.

What to Wear?

What to Wear? {Maternity}

{Newbies}

The simplest wardrobe choice for your maternity session is . . . none at all! Moms-to-be are often stunned at the elegant images that result from creative posing and camera angles that show “just enough.” If you’re not inclined to bare all, there are many options that result in the gorgeous bare belly shots everyone wants.

Try a fitted tank top and low-waisted yoga pants (black looks especially sleek). The “fitted” part for any wardrobe choice is key. A few fun shots with hip tees with clever proclamations on them are always nice as well! Be sure to keep tightlyfitted elastic waistbands and socks far far away for a few hours before your shoot so that we avoid indentations in your skin. Wristwatches are also best left off for the session.

For newborn sessions, two key wardrobe questions significantly affect your resulting images.

First, what will the baby wear? And second, what will we wear? That’s right, mom and dad . . . you’ll be in some of the photos as well, even if just as a “backdrop” to the star of the show.

Newborns are absolute perfection when they wear nothing at all! For variety and some fun pops of color, I also like to use the swaddling blankets you have at home--that also gives the images a personal touch.

There are few things as stunning as skin-on-skin shots of a newborn and the proud parents. Dad can be shirtless for some shots, as can Mom, or she could wear a strapless bra or tank top. Images for this type of shot are generally closely cropped. Also, long-sleeved black shirts for Mom and Dad provide a sophisticated, dramatic “backdrop.”

We’ve all seen those photos--heck, most of us have been in those photos. But did you know that coordinated but not “uniform” looks for families create a much more pleasing photograph? Moreover, it is not nearly as difficult as you think it is! The cardinal rule of family dressing for portraits is simple: choose items for the entire family as if you were creating one outfit.

If all of your choices were somehow on one person, would the result be pleasing, colorwise? A handy trick for those who are hesitant to break away from the monochrome madness is to choose one patterned item (for example a print dress for your daughter) and then select the rest of the family’s clothing from colors within that pattern.

Individual shots give your child a chance to show his or her personality through fashion like no other. Without the concern of clashing or competing patterns that exists in a family shot, the possibilities are limitless! So break out your daughter’s bright, crazy Oilily ensemble--the one that gives your Strasburg-loving mother-in-law fits--or your son’s beloved rain boots, and let’s capture something bold, memorable, and no-holdsbarred fun!

Studio Policies

POLICIES (IMPORTANT PLEASE READ THROROUGHLY) Session 1. Session fees are due in full at the time of booking in order to reserve your special date and time. If you have not already submitted your session fee, please contact the studio.

2. If you must cancel your session due to child illness or other personal emergency, please provide our studio with 48 hours’ notice so we can reschedule your session and provide this time for another client. Failure to provide adequate notice of a cancellation will result in the forfeiture of your session fees, and new session fees will be required to reserve a different date.

3. Session fees are nontransferable and nonrefundable.

4. Charges incurred by insufficient check funds are the sole responsibility of the client. Payment must then be made via certified check, money order, cash or credit card. An additional $40 returned check fee will be applied.

During our session 5. Attendance at photo sessions is limited to those being photographed, including siblings. In the case of children and newborns, attendance is limited to two parents only. Please do not bring siblings, personal assistants, nannies, caregivers, or friends not being photographed. Having additional people present can be distracting to both the photographer and to those being photographed.

6. Cameras of any kind are not permitted at our shoot.

7. Please arrive on time to your session properly dressed, made up and ready to begin. Because the session is of a set length, additional time for preparation will reduce the amount of time we can spend in-session and will limit the amount of images we can capture.

Proofing and Ordering 8. You will be contacted once your session images are ready to preview, and a presentation appointment will be arranged.

This appointment will assist you in making image selections and choosing sizes for wall portraits. Because your order will be taken on this date, please arrive with the provided ordering guide prepared to make decisions regarding your order. Family and friends are welcome to attend this presentation if they wish to place their own order or if you feel their presence will assist you in preparing your order.

9. An online gallery will be available for 3 days to allow you to make a note of your favorites before your order session.

10. Client images are held for a maximum of three weeks after our photography session. If a presentation appointment has not been arranged by the client or is repeatedly rescheduled, the studio must discard the images to make room for new clients.

After this time, our studio bears no liability where resulting image loss is concerned.

11. Ordered images remain on file for 1 year from the date of your portrait session. All unordered images are purged 3 weeks after your presentation appointment.

12. Completed portrait orders will be delivered to you or you can make arrangements to pick them up from the studio.

13. Reprint orders can be made at any time throughout the year while your images are in our archives. Please note there is a minimum $150.00 investment required for all re-orders.

14. Due to the custom nature of the products and services provided by The Captured Life, all sales are final once received and items cannot be returned. You may add to your order at any time, but a sale is considered final at the time the order is made.

15. All images provided by The Captured Life, whether digital or print, may not be reproduced by any means. All images created by The Captured Life are protected under copyright law per the agreement you signed at the outset of your session, and may not be saved to your computer, printed, scanned, photographed, emailed, posted online or shared digitally without consent from The Captured Life. Scanning or reproduction of purchased images constitutes copyright infringement and is punishable by law. If you require additional copies of an image, the only person permitted to print and reprint from your image set is your photographer.

16. The Captured Life reserves the right to use any images or custom created artwork (collages, storyboards, coffee table books, photo handbags, etc.) for display, publication or other promotional purposes.
