DementiArts - Summer 2025

Page 1

Welcome to Summer 2025

Well, would you look at that – another summer is already upon us! The sun is sort of shining, tourists are lining the streets, and here at Capital Theatres, we’ve been busy cooking up all sorts of dementia-friendly delights.

First things first – have you seen our shiny new website? It’s just had a fabulous makeover to match our fancy new branding! But don’t worry, it’s not just a pretty face – Allan and Jen from our digital team worked with our Focus Group to make sure it’s as accessible and user-friendly as possible. So go ahead, have a nosy and tell us what you think – we’d love to hear your feedback!

So, what have we been up to recently? Thanks to the R S Macdonald Charitable Trust, we were able to deliver our first ever summer care homes tour! Jack in the Box, with Michelle Burke and James Ross, ventured into seven brand new venues across the Lothians and rounded off with two joyful performances in our very own Event Rooms. A huge thanks to everyone who came along.

Over in the Studio, we were delighted to host In Other Words, a beautiful show that gifted over 70 free tickets to care home workers. It was a real celebration of the unsung heroes who bring so much care and kindness to others every day, and came hot on the heels of Raven Tales, a fluttering frolic through Norse mythology in our Event Rooms.

Our Comfy Ceilidh returned with the wonderful Lucie back at the helm – there were smiles, spins, and plenty of foot-tapping all round! Meanwhile, Tea and ‘Jam’ had a special visit from the adorable mini movers of Hope Cottage Nursery, who taught us the actions to all the best nursery rhymes (I think I’m still singing Wind the Bobbin Up in my sleep…) Brew and Blether took us on a wild adventure, this time with a fantastic presentation from Edinburgh Zoo all about the elusive Scottish Wildcats – who knew they were such fascinating wee creatures? And finally, our latest Together in Song was a toe-tapping, jazz-handed affair as we dived into the magical world of musicals, alongside our much-loved friends from the Forget Me Notes. Back in May, we presented at Alzheimer Scotland’s Pre-Diagnosis Group – a wonderful session which we hope to repeat as we spread the word about our dementia work (and find more folk to help us create dementia-friendly projects!) As always, a big thank you to Alzheimer Scotland for supporting this magazine with their subscription. Now, sit back, cool down with a mango lassi (recipe on page 12), and have a wee read through what Summer 2025 has in store. Wishing you a joyful, sun-soaked summer!

Feeling Calm at the Palm

An oasis in the heart of Balerno, the Palm Café offers it all: dementia-friendly quizzes, crafts, autumn planting and even a pianist who takes requests. Below, centre coordinator Clare Dow tells us more and why you’re guaranteed to feel the calm at Palm. By Clare Dow

The PALM café in Balerno has been running for over 10 years. The café is on the last Tuesday of the month in the local St Joseph’s Centre providing support and social contact for people with dementia and their carers from the areas of Currie, Juniper Green and Balerno. PALM is run by a longstanding group of experienced and truly wonderful volunteers who organise and host a diverse range of activities. There is something for everyone including quizzes, board games, crafts, autumn planting, a summer outing and even some gentle chair-based exercise. We often look back at how people used to celebrate different festivals, birthdays, life events and holidays and we love to hear everyone’s stories.

Music is an important theme for our meetings. We are lucky to have a resident pianist who accompanies our regular singing. She has a wide repertoire of favourite tunes and can even take requests on the spot –a rare talent. At Christmas, we have talented guest visitors from the local primary school to sing and play music. We were also lucky to have a young piper from the local pipe band to celebrate St Andrews Day. The young people are always delighted to come along and chat and we even get an invite to attend their annual Christmas extravaganza. Recently we had a visit from the Currie Kirk Singers who delighted us all with traditional and some very amusing songs.

“We went along with some trepidation not knowing what it was really about or what to expect. However, any fears we had were soon overcome by the warm welcome we received from all the helpers. They really did make us feel at our ease..... We really encourage anybody with dementia and their carers to give [Palm Café] a try as you will not regret it!”

A couple who found out about Palm from DementiArts

There is always a warm welcome at the café with a cup of tea or coffee and a piece of delicious cake provided by the Mill café. Everyone that comes along is made to feel very welcome and we are sure that people appreciate the companionship and fun. You only have to look around to see the happy chatty atmosphere and the smiles as people sing along or tap their toes to their favourite tunes.

PALM Café meets on the last Tuesday of the month from 3pm – 4.30pm in the St Joseph centre Balerno (except July). For more information, and to speak to Clare, contact palmcafebalerno@gmail.com

Playlist Corner

“As soon as ‘Jean Jeanie’ started, the crowd went wild . . . we were in heaven!”

Say hello to our fabulous Head of Customer Services, Linda Hogg — a woman who knows every seat in the theatre and every song in her heart! In this issue, she swaps show times for show tunes, sharing the soundtrack of her life with DementiArts. Expect Walkmans, fairy cakes, and a Renault with zero respect for Prince. By Linda Hogg.

Which song reminds you of your hometown?

“Caledonia” by Dougie MacLean always brings a tear to my eye. In my 20s, I travelled and worked abroad, and whenever I felt homesick for Edinburgh, I’d pop that cassette into my Walkman. Just hearing it made me think of all the friends and family I was missing like a hug from home. Later, I met my husband, who’s from Northern Ireland. He has this lovely tradition — every time he drives off the ferry, heading home, he plays an Irish tune as he touches Irish soil. It’s always something different: Daniel O’Donnell, U2, or Stiff Little Fingers. So, I came up with my own return tune Caledonia. Those lyrics say it all: “Oh and let me tell you that I love you, that I think about you all the time, Caledonia you’re calling me, and now I’m going home!” There’s no better homecoming song.

Which song reminds you of your childhood?

Definitely the Big Band classics especially “In the Mood” by Glenn Miller. On Saturdays, my siblings and I would be dropped off at my grandma’s flat in Yeaman Place. We loved those days reading comics, baking fairy cakes, and curling up to watch a double matinee on BBC2. We especially adored the old black-and-white dance musicals with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. When I hear those Big Band tunes now, I’m instantly back there cuddled up next to Grandma on the sofa, cake crumbs everywhere. What a happy, simple childhood I had.

Which song takes you back to a special memory in your life?

“Jean Jeanie” by David Bowie! When I turned 16, I got the best birthday present ever: a ticket to see Bowie live at Murrayfield. My mum wasn’t thrilled at first, but after some serious pleading (and extra chores!), she finally gave in. My best friend and I queued early to get right up front. After sitting through three support acts and getting drenched in torrential rain, the sun came out just as Bowie stepped on stage at 9pm — blonde curls, pale blue suit, absolutely god-like. When “Jean Jeanie” started, the crowd went wild. I’ve never been to another concert like it.

Which song always gets you dancing and/or singing along?

It’s got to be “1999” by Prince! I was beyond excited to see him live in Glasgow in 1995. Well… we almost saw the whole show. My poor old Renault 4 overheated on the M8, and we had to wait by the side of the road for two hours until it cooled down. When we finally arrived and turned the corner to enter the venue, there he was in a tight purple suit, frilly shirt, high black boots, and that iconic curly hair. The concert was amazing. We danced, sang, and celebrated life. I still play “1999” at the end of a long shift when I fancy a little boogie. It always takes me right back to that night.

Which song reminds you of someone special?

“Harvest Moon” by Neil Young is incredibly special to me it reminds me of the people I love most. After 30 years together, David and I decided to get married during COVID. It was a tiny wedding at the City Chambers just five of us, plus the celebrant. We told my mum three days before, and my boys, Shaun and Ben, a couple of weeks ahead. Everyone was masked up, and we skipped down the aisle to Harvest Moon. The lyrics were perfect: “When we were lovers, I loved you with all my heart!” It was a simple, beautiful day and that song will always be our moment to cherish.

A Message of Hope

Our Gallery this quarter features the stunning artistic legacy of Douglas – a remarkable man, remembered not just for his breadth of skill (accomplished businessman, angler, gardener… the list goes on) but for the philosophy he upheld against a life beset by Alzheimer’s and Leukaemia. Read on to discover Douglas’s “Message of Hope.”

Douglas was a businessman, passionate about gardening, fishing and painting. He was also a much-loved husband, father and grandfather. He also had Alzheimer’s Disease, and lymphoma which eventually took his life.

When I met Douglas, he was keen on learning more about Alzheimer’s Disease, although this was not the only topic of our conversations. He enjoyed showing me his garden, telling me about the work that needed to happen for it to flourish. We talked about his rich life. He was very proud of the business he took over from his dad, which he successfully developed and sold allowing him to focus on his interests. We discussed his love for painting which he had not been doing as much. We talked about his family.

He also shared things which were becoming difficult, having to accept more support, tiredness, and trying to keep his weight on.

What was obvious when meeting Douglas was a sense of gradual acceptance of his circumstances, while nevertheless continuing to enjoy life and not giving up his creative spirit.

Douglas moved into long term care where he rediscovered his love for painting. He was pleased with the fact he was able to come up with new ideas for his projects. He was happy to find out that Alzheimer’s Disease did not take away who he truly was. He wanted people who live with dementia to know that it is possible to continue enjoying one’s passions or discovering new ones. Creativity is not bound by the illness and can continue to flourish, and you will experience joy from it.

This was Douglas’ message of hope.

A Full House at ‘The Cabaret in the Sky’!

Drama is in volunteer Sylvia’s blood. A well-kent face at Tea & ‘Jam’ (where she can often be found serenading her ‘old cock Linnet!’) here she remembers her showman grandfather, ‘Happy Tom Parker’, and turns to Shakespeare for some choice words for confronting a life touched by dementia. William Shakespeare, renowned poet, playwright, and actor wrote a monologue beginning “All the world’s a stage” taken from the play As You Like It. In it, he explores the themes of time, ageing, memory, and the purpose of life. The speech “The Seven Ages of Man’’ details birth to death and emphasises how each person plays a role in each stage of life...

I am known as Sylvia Rose Parker and I was born into a theatrical family. My grandfather, comedian and dancer Happy Tom Parker, treaded the boards at the Edinburgh Empire Theatre in the early 1900s. Now known as the Festival Theatre, Happy Tom was on the same billing as the great magician and escapologist Harry Houdini. I often wonder what life would be like for them today had they survived the ravages of time. Would they have succumbed to dementia?

Dementia is the umbrella term for a range of conditions associated with cognitive impairment, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common form. As dementia progresses, individuals may struggle with memory loss, communication difficulties, loss of identity and changes in behaviour. These symptoms can lead to isolation and withdrawal from social activities and interactions. For me, it has been a mixed blessing having been born into a traditional theatrical culture. My upbringing and my later professional nursing experience have given me an insight into various stages of the dementia journey – stress, confusion and loss of identity. I personally know how navigating the journey of a loved one’s cognitive impairment can be quite challenging and difficult. Being the youngest in a family of five, over the last 20 years I have been a carer to various family members

with dementia. First my mum at 91 years of age, my aunty, followed by my late sister June. All suffered from various forms of dementia. Incidentally, June, at 93 years old, was one of four theatrical artists who performed in the Empire Theatre in the 40s 50s and 60s. June’s fellow thespians were Doreen Ward (the ‘baby’ at 89), Betty Clarkson (90) and Marie Duthie who had her 100th birthday just before she passed away. It was such a joy for me to see their faces light up and hear their feet tapping whenever they attended the dance events for An Audience With..., part of LUMINATE Scotland’s Creative Ageing Festival. All these inspirational performers, are no longer with us having exited to the ‘Cabaret In The Sky.’

I was so grateful to the Capital Theatres events teams who made my sister and her fellow thespians’ final years so enjoyable. These tap-dancing ladies were the forerunners of the present dementia events at these theatres. Capital Theatres executive and management teams have addressed the issues of dementia challenges. Together they have created dementia-friendly theatre performances, workshops, and creative activities, with staff trained in disability and dementia awareness.

Music has always played a pivotal role in dementia activities. As part of my volunteering, I attend the ‘Forget Me Notes’ sing-a-long, Tea & ‘Jam’, where participants are encouraged to play musical instruments, and one of my favourites, ‘The Hobby Box’. I recently attended one of the ‘Hobby Box’ sessions. Such great fun! So many boxes, all containing memorabilia of bygone days. For instance, one had long-forgotten wash day utensils and various toys from the past – the old wartime tins and jars of food and ration books brought back memories. Oh! What joy remembering these bygone days! So much chatting and laughter from individuals who had not communicated or smiled for a long time! Happiness too for the carers seeing the interactions of their loved ones!

Now, as a volunteer at the Festival Theatre and as ‘Happy Tom Parkers’ youngest granddaughter, I feel all the past fellow thespian theatrical spirits are with me when I sing and join in with the dementia events. I feel so happy being able to support other people with dementia and their carers, along with Festival Theatre events coordinators Alex, Gus and Lucie and my fellow volunteers. I only hope I can continue to fulfil my role and purpose in life by volunteering before Shakespeare’s final lines of the play: ‘Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.’

The Great Tractor Trouble

There’s magic, mayhem and muck in this quarter’s Blog Corner. Read on for another whimsical tale from Thornhill! By Paul Shaw

The June sun shines brightly, a warm breeze gently stirring the carpets of fresh grass in the fields. Insects, great and small, zigzag across the sky, hypnotised by the overpowering scent of tree blossom and freshly opened flowers. Sparrows sing their hearts out as they frantically gather food for their hungry nestlings. In the barn, Florence has just finished feeding the animals. There’s an air of contentment throughout it’s a happy place to be on this perfect summer morning. You could even say it’s a bit of a magic roundabout here. Outside the barn, however, stands a grumpy Mr. Rusty. His tractor has broken down, and Florence is giving him an earful as she pushes a wheelbarrow full of heavy stable muck towards the heap at the far side of the farm.

Dougal comes running up, barking. “This will not do! Do it will not! This country’s going to pieces. We can’t have tractors breaking down. What’s next Hibs winning the European Cup?” He trots up to Florence and hands her a flower. “This isn’t right. You shouldn’t be pushing that wheelbarrow. Slave labour in Thornhill, 2025 — it’s preposterous! Shocking! We’re on the slippery slope to chaos. Get tractors nationalised!” Florence gives him a hug, then reaches into her pocket and offers him a sugar lump to calm him down. “Don’t worry, Dougal. All will be well. Zebedee will get the tractor working.” Dillan hops up to the tractor. “What’s this, like? This blue machine?” He jumps into the front digger. “Is it a rocket? Can someone blast me into those marmalade skies?” Lost in his dreamy thoughts, Dillan’s fantasy is suddenly interrupted by a brown-eyed figure staring back at him. “Man, the aliens have landed, and I’m on their spaceship!”

Zebedee looks at him, exasperated. “It’s not time for bed, Dillan. Keep off the fresh grass and do something useful like smoking those joints for dinner, will you?” And with a loud BOING!, he disappears. Miraculously, the tractor roars back to life.

Scan the QR code, left, to see Zebedee take a leap.

Slipping through Dementia’s cracks: the show that puts memory centre stage

The critically acclaimed The Nature of Forgetting is hitting the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year. Here, we are lucky to have creator/director, Guillaume Pigé, talk to us about the inspiration, process and challenges behind making such a powerful show. By Guillaume Pigé

“We all know that something is eternal. And it ain’t houses and it ain’t names, and it ain’t earth, and it ain’t even the stars... Everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings... There is something, way down deep that’s eternal about every human being... And that’s what’s left when memory is gone.” - Thornton Wilder, Our Town

In 2015, the making of The Nature of Forgetting began with a single question: what is left when memory is gone? We couldn’t put the answer into words so we made a show about it.

At the start, we were inspired by writer Bruno Schulz and theatre director Tadeusz Kantor, particularly Kantor’s The Dead Class and Wielopole, Wielopole, which both explore the inescapability of childhood memories and

the impossibility of returning to the past. The theatrical challenge of making something visible on stage that no longer exists was deeply appealing. To explore this further, we collaborated with neuroscience professor Kate Jeffery to understand what happens in the brain when we forget. We learned that memory is a visual process, and that the hippocampus — a small region in the center of the brain — acts like a workshop where memories are built.

When we remember something, like our first kiss at school, the brain reconstructs the memory step by step. It starts by creating the space the classroom then gradually fills in details like wooden desks and classmates, before finally recalling the event itself. Memory is a reconstruction, like pulling on an invisible thread with countless memories attached. This became the key to developing the language of our performance. To portray forgetting, we focused on deconstructing, mis-constructing, and tangling these memory threads sometimes even breaking them, making it impossible to fully retrieve a sequence of events. This approach suited our style of physical and visual theatre, where objects and characters could appear in the wrong place or time. We extended this concept through voice, sound, music, and lighting to make the process of forgetting visible on stage.

The journey of Tom, our main character, alongside his daughter Sophie, his mother, and his best friend Mike, was shaped by personal experiences and interviews with people living with dementia and their carers. We didn’t aim to collect personal stories we were more interested in the profound connection between music and memory. Music activates parts of the brain that aren’t solely responsible for memory, which is why people with dementia often still respond to music. It’s not that memories disappear — they become inaccessible. That distinction was crucial for us: the memories are still there.

“Curiously, memories we thought were long gone often resurface later in life, sometimes during the onset of memory decline. Neurobiologists don’t fully understand why, but I find it fascinating.“

One scene in the show is drawn directly from a moment I witnessed between my grandparents. One afternoon, my grandfather wouldn’t let go of my grandmother’s hand. He just wouldn’t. Every time I perform that moment on stage, I connect with it deeply. For me, it’s about holding on — clinging to a loved one as long as possible before the connection fades beyond reach. Common experience tells us that we forget more than we remember, and science agrees. Our brains constantly choose which memories to keep and which to discard. In this way, we are shaped as much by what we forget as by what we remember. Yet, curiously, memories we thought were long gone often resurface later in life, sometimes during the onset of memory decline. Neurobiologists don’t fully understand why, but I find it fascinating. I noticed this in my interviews too: people often recalled long-term or childhood memories with striking clarity, as though the past had become newly accessible.

After nearly a decade of creating, touring, and revisiting The Nature of Forgetting, the greatest lesson I carry is the reminder to be fully present to live life while I’m living it. It brings me back to Emily’s question in Our Town:

“Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it? — every, every minute?”

Ultimately, our piece isn’t about dementia. It’s about the fragility of life, the fleeting nature of memory, and that eternal ‘something’ that remains when memory is gone.

Catch The Nature of Forgetting at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival from 9th – 23rd of August at The Pleasance Courtyard. Tickets are available now at edfringe.com.

The green-fingered gardener with a need for speed

When it comes to hobbies, you might not put beetroot and bombing about on a motorbike together. But for green-fingered Isa, the two passions complement each other as perfectly as the veg varieties in her carefully tended garden. This quarter, Ann meets an East Lothian native, whose need for speed is matched by a love of family and all things wild. By Ann Burnett

IIsa is an East Lothian lass, born in Whitecraigs in 1940. She still remembers the enemy bombers going over during the war and once a bomb exploded nearby. A large bing, left over from the pits, took the worst of the blast and saved their home. She travelled to Musselburgh Grammar for schooling and when she left, Isa’s first job was in market gardening. Growing fruit and vegetables is something she’s enjoyed her whole life and which she still takes pleasure in today. When I visited, her garden is perfection and ready to be planted up for the new season. Helped by her daughter, Lynne, the raised beds will be planted with potatoes, carrots, leeks, onions and beetroot. She even met her husband Alexander through market gardening. She was working at a farm where he delivered goods and he asked her for a date. But after a while, she broke it off with him. However, a year later, realising her mistake, she wrote him a letter asking him to meet her outside the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh. He must have missed her too because he turned up and the rest as they say is history. They were married a year later. They settled in Haddington where she brought up two sons and a daughter.

She was a great mum, according to Lynne, willing to join in with all their games and projects as she loved being with children. After they all went to school, she took a job with a local doctor, as a housekeeper and childminder, looking after the children until they went to high school. Her large family are a great source of pride and pleasure. She has 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, spread out over East Lothian and beyond. She was very close to her sister, Mary who had looked after her since her mother died when Isa was 17. Sadly Mary died from dementia. Another great interest was motorbikes. When not looking after children or her garden, Isa and her husband would take their motorbike, a Matchless, to the Isle of Man TT races every year where they enjoyed watching the bikes zoom around the course. On their outings, Isa would ride pillion, but once, Alexander let her sit up front though he criticised her for going too fast! She takes me out to show me around her garden. She’s very fond of fruit and had a lovely pear tree growing though now a miniature apple tree is all they have room for. Lynne has transformed a sunny corner for her mum to sit and enjoy the plants as she is no longer able to do much in the garden. She had a nasty accident recently where she made the classic gardening mistake of standing on a rake which gave her a nasty bump on her head and a visit to the hospital in Edinburgh. But she’s still smiling and enjoying life.

Those Were the Days

Strike a pose! These proud figures have stood tall in Edinburgh for decades — some even centuries. From famous faces to legendary locals, can you tell where these statues stand? Have a guess and see how many you recognise!

fringe for everyone

Fringe artists have donated tickets to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Community Ticketing Initiative, which aims to help locals who might otherwise miss out on the festival. Edinburgh Theatres are teaming up with theFringe Society to distribute these tickets.

These tickets are available for people who live in Edinburgh or the Lothians and are either at risk, vulnerable, marginalised or isolated, or experiencing additional barriers to attending the festival.

You do not need to prove your status, just contact Alex for tickets on alex.howard@edtheatres.com.

The Community Ticketing Initiative is possible thanks to the generosity of the artists who donate tickets to their shows. These artists can often be smaller-scale, independent and community-minded – they’re eager to share the joy of performance, even if this reduces their income from ticket sales. They are not paid or reimbursed to do so, but benefit by having a happy and supportive audience.

To thank these artists, we encourage you to only book the tickets you know will be used. We know plans can change – if the ticket recipient can no longer make it to a show, please call our Community Tickets Box Office on 0131 226 0027 and release the ticket(s) so that someone else has a chance to experience the magic. The more notice you can give, the better.

Welcome to Pet Corner!

In this month’s Pet Corner, Lucille, our Development Manager, shares the ups, downs and delightful fluffiness of life with hens. Read on for tales of pecking-order politics, egg-cellent discoveries, and a bit of green-thumb mischief from these charming backyard companions!

Name The Bluefield Fluffybutts

Human Lucille Bluefield (Senior Development Manager)

Description We first began hen keeping during lockdown in 2020 when a local hen keeper needed new homes for her ladies. Bobbyzilla (named by my son after the P7 class goldfish) and her friends Jessie, Philomena, and Tina soon took up residency in our Balerno garden. The timing was perfect, as the whole family was at home, and we quickly learned everything about henkeeping mistakes and all.

Did you know the colour of a hen’s eggs depends on the colour of her ears? Hens with red or brown ears lay brown eggs, and hens with white ears lay white eggs. Some breeds even lay blue eggs!

Favourite grub Dried mealworms, sunflower seeds, blueberries, sweetcorn, leafy greens, and porridge in winter.

Nature If you have space, hens make brilliant pets. They’re affectionate, curious, and endlessly entertaining clucking around the garden, dustbathing, jumping for flies, and scratching for slugs and worms. You’d think they’d be perfect for pest control, but they can’t resist snacking on your plants, especially fresh green shoots!

Naming them is great fun we especially enjoyed getting two new hens during the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee and naming them Lilly (after Elizabeth) and Milly (after Camilla). And of course, they provide a steady supply of fresh eggs in all shapes and sizes. There’s nothing better than finding a warm, fresh egg in the hay.

DementiArts Calendar

Receiving a dementia diagnosis can be a daunting time. We’re fortunate in Edinburgh to have a wide range of dementia-friendly services and activities right on our doorstep. In this calendar, we’ve done our best to list events happening over the next quarter across the city and the Lothians. Big or small, online or in person, in galleries or gardens if it’s taking place in the coming months, you’ll find it here. Events highlighted in blue are Capital Theatres events held here at the Festival Theatre.

Alzheimer Scotland also offers a wealth of activities across Edinburgh and the Lothians. This list doesn’t cover all their fantastic programmes, so for more information, please contact: Edinburgh: EdinburghServices@alzscot.org / 0131 551 9350

West Lothian: WestLothianServices@alzscot.org / 01506 533 108

Those Were the Days answers from page X

Statue One: You can find Queen Victoria at the Foot of Leith Walk, just outside of the Newkirkgate Shopping Centre. Erected in 1907, it serves as a tribute to the local men of Leith who fought in the Boer War.

Statue Two: Built in 1991 to commemorate Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his work, Sherlock Holmes stands tall in Picardy Place

Statue Three: Greyfriars Bobby, one of Edinburgh’s most iconic landmarks, is a must-see on George IV Bridge just don’t rub his nose!

Statue Four: Hordes of tourists walk past these two Scottish warriors every day at the entrance to Edinburgh Castle. Robert the Bruce wears the crown whilst William Wallace stands guard with his sword and shield.

Statue Five: My personal favourite, Wojtek the Soldier Bear in Princess Street Gardens serves as a poignant reminder of the close ties between Poland and Scotland forged during World War II.

Statue Six: Hiding in Parliament Square behind St. Giles Cathedral you’ll find Edinburgh’s oldest statue. Erected in 1685, this lead equestrian statue depicts Charles II in Roman military garb.
