RACHEL REBELLO MEd, INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN, ‘15 Like many parents who work full-time, Rachel Rebello found life “crazy and hectic,” especially with obligations like her mortgage and childcare.

The online program allowed her to gracefully weave education into an already demanding schedule where pursuits of relaxation can lag behind the need to accommodate for her children’s school itinerary, as well as her and her husband’s work responsibilities. “The online program helped to better prepare me for my career,” says Rachel. “I had the opportunity to participate in the program while maintaining my job as an instructional designer.”

LOWERING BARRIERS TO LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM “It’s like you’re standing in history.” That was how Amelia Wietman felt as she stood among illuminated Roman ruins at night in the heart of Italy. Amelia was one of the students to take the Food and Culture: The Italian Experience course in Siena, Tuscany. She delved into the hidden intricacies of the Italian dinner table and the way that it intertwined with the history and culture of the peninsula. “Just eat what Italians eat, drink what they do, and you’ll be fine,” Amelia says.

Like most nursing students with notoriously busy schedules, going on a semester abroad was unlikely for Amelia. However, the three-week course presented just the right opportunity for her to study overseas during her summer break.

Centers, Institutes & Partnerships Broadening Advanced Technological Education Connections (BATEC) BATEC is a National Science Foundation– funded National Center of Excellence for Computing and Information Technologies working in the urban areas of Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Las Vegas.

BATEC is working to define, extend, and strengthen computing and information technology pathways and career opportunities for high school, community college, and university students; facilitate and leverage strategic partnerships with education, business, government, and the community to build awareness, generate interest, and support learning opportunities; conduct actionable research to inform policy makers, educators, and workforce development agencies; and participate in and lead the national discussion on the subject of integrated curriculum and applied IT. Center for Innovation and Excellence in eLearning (CIEE) umb.edu/academics/caps/centers/ciee CIEE has been created to promote, encourage, and sponsor the study of eLearning in the university, corporate, and public sectors, and will become the hub for a broad range of initiatives in basic research, new design and development of tools/products, instructional design models, accessibility and usability, and best practices within the various modes of eLearning.

Findings will be disseminated through the publication of an online journal, a publicaccessible online database, an annual conference, and an electronic “best practices” document.

The consortium’s undergraduate academic program offers unique learning opportunities in marine and aquatic sciences, environmental policy, and environmental management. Courses are held during the evenings on the campuses of member institutions.

From the north or west: Take the Southeast Expressway to exit 15. Turn left onto Columbia Road. Enter the rotary and take the first right (Morrissey Boulevard). Bear right of the traffic island, following the UMass Boston sign. Proceed past the Boston Globe building. Turn left into the campus.

Free and frequent shuttle bus service is provided between the university and JFK/UMass Station on the MBTA Red Line, and from the campus to the Bayside parking area via the #3 bus.

Route #1 stops at the Campus Center, weekdays.

Route #2 buses stop at the Campus Center, the Massachusetts Archives, the JFK Library, and the Clark Athletic Center Circle, 7 days a week.

From the south: Take the Southeast Expressway to exit 14 (near the National Grid tank). Follow Morrissey Boulevard northward to the campus.

Route #3 stops are at the Bayside parking area, the Campus Center, and the Clark Athletic Center Circle, weekdays.
