Midcoast Symphony Family

Louise Huntington, 1933-2020 Louise Huntington, a founding member of MSO, died March 6, 2020. She had recently retired from the viola section in 2019 after 30 years of leadership.

Louise grew up in a family that believed studying music was both a duty and a pleasure. After four years of the requisite piano lessons she started playing the violin in seventh grade. It wasn’t until her youngest child left for college that she worked seriously to learn to play the viola.

She brought organizational skills and optimism to many musical projects in the Brunswick area. In 1973, she co-founded the Brunswick Regional Youth Orchestra, in which three of her children played. Louise said, “When the time seemed right to try to start an adult orchestra [now MSO] in the Brunswick area, I felt I had some management skills that might be helpful.

Never did the four of us who started the ball rolling dream the orchestra would become such a lively organization.”

Louise was an adept and committed educator. When her own children were young, she taught first grade at West Harpswell Elementary School for three years. She also taught at The School for Parents and Children, later named the Thomas Point Primary School. Later she taught violin at Brunswick Junior High School.

In addition, she enjoyed playing in the Merrymeeting Musical Menagerie, and played string quartets with friends in Harpswell and China, Maine, every Friday morning for over 20 years.

She married Bowdoin College biology professor Chuck Huntington in 1956.

They had four children (George, Bill, Kate, and Sarah) and lived in North Harpswell for over 60 years. Her daughter, Kate Gray of Bowdoinham, has played violin in MSO for many years as well.

About the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra The Midcoast Symphony is a community orchestra founded in 1990.

Started as a chamber orchestra, we now have over 80 members on our roster. We continue to grow under the baton of Rohan Smith, bringing top-notch performances to the Orion Center in Topsham and the Gendron Franco Center in Lewiston.

Our members are volunteer players: we are teachers, doctors, homemakers, business people, retired people, professional musicians, and a variety of other occupations, and we hail from the midcoast, Lewiston-Auburn, and Portland regions. Our repertoire ranges from Mozart and Haydn to recently written music, and we are excited to connect further with audiences and talented players from our state.

In addition to our regular concerts, we have “More with Midcoast,� free education and community engagement programs that support our goal to contribute significantly to the cultural life of midcoast and central Maine.

Accomplished and Entertaining

George Lopez George Lopez, pianist, has been featured across the globe as recitalist, soloist with orchestra, and collaborator. He received critical acclaim for his interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and performed the complete Beethoven Piano Concertos in two concert seasons. He was invited by The International Holland Music Sessions on a world tour where he performed in Paris, London, Cologne, New York’s Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and Los Angeles where he was hailed by the Los Angeles Times for his “...musical perspective, continuity, and kaleidoscopic colors.”

He performed Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue to a capacity crowd with the New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra and has performed recitals in Switzerland and Italy. He premiered a piano concerto written for him by Romeo Melloni, which he recorded with the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, with Maestro Paul Polivnick.

In addition to the New Hampshire Symphony, Mr. Lopez has appeared with the Granite State Symphony Orchestra, the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra of Maine, the Fort Smith Symphony, and the Southwest Florida Symphony in Ft. Myers. His chamber music collaborations include the Emerson String Quartet, the Rainier Quartet, the Ying Quartet, the Incanto Ensemble, and the Aurea Ensemble, along with members of some of the top orchestras in the country. He performed with cellist Emmanuel Feldman in Boston’s Jordan Hall in a world premiere of Jan Swafford’s In Time of War for cello and piano.

Mr. Lopez is an advocate for music education and a popular lecturer on the arts in New England, has had active studios throughout New England at premiere schools, and has given lectures for the European Piano Teachers Association in Amsterdam.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Belize to Mayan parents, he started playing the piano at the fairly late age of 11. Upon returning to the U.S., he won his first orchestral competition at 14 in Texas and later was awarded a full scholarship to The Hartt School of Music. After graduating with honors, he went to Paris on a Franco-American study grant and received a unanimous First Prize for the Diplome supérieur. He completed his Masters Degree cum laude in Amsterdam. Now he is the Beckwith Artist in Residence and conducts the Bowdoin Chamber Orchestra.

They will explore the roots of the piece as well as how various artists, including Lopez, have interpreted it. He was to have been MSO’s guest soloist in October 2020.

Trumpet Soloist, Composer, Conductor

Wayne J. du Maine A native of St. Louis, Wayne du Maine currently performs with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Brooklyn and Long Island Philharmonics, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, New York City Opera, Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass, and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and with contemporary music ensembles such as Speculum Musicae, Sospeso, and ST-X Xenakis.

Mr. du Maine is a member of the Manhattan Brass and with Mercury and the Brooklyn Philharmonic Brass Quintets, he is dedicated to performing and introducing live music to thousands of school children in the New York City area, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Du Maine has worked with a broad spectrum of artists ranging from Leonard Bernstein and Leonard Slatkin to Hank Jones, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Patti Lupone, and Audra MacDonald. He has been a soloist with the orchestras of St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh. He can be heard on recordings with the New York Philharmonic, Met Opera Orchestra, numerous commercials, motion pictures, and with Prince on his New Power Soul recording.

Mr. du Maine is on the faculty of Columbia and Princeton Universities as well as Bar Harbor Brass Week. At the Juilliard School, Wayne teaches trumpet in the Music Advancement Program and serves as a teaching assistant in the Instrumental Music Program. He is also on the conducting faculty of the Elisabeth Murrow Summer Strings. Recently, Wayne made his Brooklyn Philharmonic conducting debut to critical acclaim.

Mr. du Maine has performed at music festivals in Aspen, Spoleto, Tanglewood, Vermont Mozart, Bowdoin, Marlboro, Berkshire Choral, and Manchester (VT) Music Festival. He has been a member of the pit orchestras for Titanic, Music Man, and Man of La Mancha. Du Maine completed a two-year run of Fiddler on the Roof where he was associate conductor. He was a member of the show How the Grinch Stole Christmas and associate conductor at the hit revival of South Pacific at Lincoln Center. Highlights of recent performances include the Boys Choir of Harlem; Take 6; Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society; Absolute Ensemble; soloist with the Cincinnati Symphony; Peter, Paul and Mary; and the rock band Jesus H. Christ, where he plays keyboards.

A member of two softball leagues in Central Park, Wayne resides in New Jersey with his wife, Sharon.

FREE MSO Live Event on Facebook Conductor and Music Director Rohan Smith hosts an online chat with New York City musician and long-time friend, Wayne du Maine. Du Maine has been trumpet soloist twice with MSO and was to have conducted the orchestra in March 2021, in addition to being soloist.

Instead, Smith and he will discuss his career as a soloist, conductor, and composer, including du Maine’s playing with Bernstein and in Wagner’s Ring Cycle with the Metropolitan Opera.

A Message from Our Conductor

Rohan Smith, Conductor and Music Director Dear MSO friends, It now seems that our music making together in MSO is from another very remote and distant world, as musicians everywhere are in a continued state of suspension from music making together, which is the true fuel that keeps us all going. I don’t think I ever realized before how much I depend on the energy of live musicians connecting to each other.

Last summer I was very lucky to stay in touch with music and musicians. In late June through the first weeks of July, I participated in the Virtual Conductors Retreat of Medomak, directed by my former teacher Kenneth Kiesler from the University of Michigan. The retreat was “attended” by 250 conductors at every career level from across the world – Asia, Australia, the UK, Holland, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Turkey, Egypt, Columbia, and of course a big group from the U.S. A central goal was to recommit ourselves to the disciplines of score study and reflection of music, away from the pressures of career, administration, and concert deadlines. And in addition, the retreat was an opportunity for a wide exchange of ideas on programming, engaging with audiences and the wider community, and the question of whether music can be a tool for social change in communities around the world.

It was inspiring to hear how orchestras are reaching out to new audiences in rural areas and inner cities in the U.S., and how opportunities for kids to play in youth orchestras have transformed lives in many countries. There is so much exciting new music being commissioned by orchestras and written by composers across race, gender, and culture.

One valuable resource that emerged from the retreat was being able to connect to the enormous network of conductors who are faced with the same question that we face in MSO. How and when do we start playing together again? How many of us can play together safely? Who do we play for? Do we perform on-line or do we play for a hall that is a quarter full? All these questions are under intense discussion and I can only say that the conclusions are still tentative and evolving.

I look forward so much to hearing the first sounds that we make together however we do this! Stay in touch with music every day if you can!

Rohan Smith Music Director and Conductor Conductor and violinist Rohan Smith is in his 17th season as Music Director of the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra. He has led the MSO to critical acclaim in performances of the major symphonic repertoire of all eras to the present time. In recent seasons, Smith and MSO have performed Mahler’s First and Fourth Symphonies; Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra; Beethoven’s Eroica, Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Symphonies; Brahms’s First and Second Symphonies; Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique; Debussy’s Nocturnes; Stravinsky’s Petrouchka, and Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe Suite No. 2. In May 2006, MSO under Smith was one of 65 orchestras across America to perform the newly commissioned “Made in America” by Joan Tower. In May 2015, Smith led Midcoast Symphony, the Oratorio Chorale and Vox Nova in two memorable performances of the Verdi Requiem.

Rohan Smith is Director of Orchestral and Chamber Music at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, where he conducts the Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra. Smith has conducted the PEA Chamber Orchestra on cultural exchange, service, and outreach tours to Vietnam, Hong Kong, Quebec, England, New York, and the Coachella Valley, California, performing there for children of immigrant farm workers.

As an orchestral violinist in New York, Rohan Smith performed regularly with the American Symphony Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the American Composers Orchestra, the New Orchestra of Westchester, and on Broadway. He has performed under conductors James Levine, Kurt Masur, Andrew Davis, Kyrill Kondrashin, Dennis Russell Davies, Mark Elder, Kurt Sanderling, and Charles Mackerras. As an orchestral violinist he has been privileged to perform with many distinguished artists such as Jessye Norman, Itzhak Perlman, Thomas Hampson, Marilyn Horne, Pinchas Zuckerman, Midori, Kathleen Battle, Andre Watts, Garrick Ohlson, Billy Taylor, and Frank Sinatra.

Rohan Smith Biography Continued

Smith performed with the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra under Adam Fischer for many years, including frequently at Haydn’s summer residence at the Esterhazy palace near Eisenstadt, and in festivals throughout Europe, Japan, and Taiwan. In 1991 and 1995, he participated in the Mahler Festspiel in Kassel, Germany, with members of the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and Concertgebeouw orchestras under the batons of Adam Fischer and Manfred Honeck. Smith performs regularly with members of America’s leading orchestras in the “Music for Life” benefit concerts at Carnegie Hall, to bring attention to the humanitarian needs of refugees in Syria, Dafur, and HIV-infected children in Africa.

As a chamber musician, Smith has performed at the Kowmung Music Festival* in Australia, the Cervantino Festival in Mexico, the Toronto International Chamber Music Festival, and Klangfrühling Schlaining in Austria. Smith was a member of the contemporary music group Terra Australis from 1986 to 1989 and performed with them as soloist at the 1988 Aspen Music Festival in Andrew Ford’s Chamber Concerto No.3: In Constant Flight. He recorded several of Ford’s works on the CD Icarus, which was named one of the best 10 CDs by The Sydney Morning Herald in 2001.

Rohan Smith is a graduate of Manhattan School of Music. He studied violin with Robert Pikler, Zinaida Gilels, Szymon Goldberg, and Burton Kaplan, and conducting with Michael Charry, Adam Fischer, and Kenneth Kiesler.

Friends of MSO We need and appreciate you!

The “Friends of MSO” is a group of community members who directly support the activities of the orchestra by helping with such important tasks as mailings, ushering, tickets, and refreshments. They are valuable advocates for the orchestra within the community and have been responsible for bringing many new audience members to these performances. The time commitment is minimal: usually 1- 2 hours the month prior to each concert and any help you can lend with ushering, selling tickets, and helping with the reception on the day of the concert. Naturally, advocacy for the orchestra is on-going whenever an opportunity arises.
