Ingvar Ambjørnsen

The Elling Series Elling-serien Ingvar Ambjørnsen’s most successful novels is the quartet about the odd ball Elling: Utsikt til Paradiset, Fugledansen, Brødre i blodet and Elsk meg i morgen. These novels are critically acclaimed and have sold very well to Ambjørnsen’s wide audience. Ambjørnsen introduced something entirely new with his books about Elling. His stories contain crazy inventiveness and absurd, gentle humour. He describes the loneliness – and the dream of friendship. It is an entertaining read, and the protagonist Elling is called by some reviewers “the Norwegian Forest Gump”.

The movie Elling was nominated for an Oscar in 2001, and the stage play was very well received at London’s West End.

Ingvar Ambjørnsen (1956–) made his literary début in 1981, and has since published novels,

The small family consisting of Kine, Konrad and six-year-old Iver, an anxiety-ridden child, has had to move in with Kine's parents because Konrad has gambled away everything the family owned and more.

An uneasy place to start from, but they're determined to try to rescue their relationship.

In a close neighbourhood, we meet many people from Kine's past. In her diary, an elderly woman tells of how she is gradually losing control over her existence.

She lives alone, without contacts with family or friends. Both obstinate and wilful, she refuses to let the cleaning lady in and so it happens that she scrubs the floor with rice pudding instead of scouring powder. Suddenly, a great tit is perched in the bath and singing away – or is it actually the stuffed rock ptarmigan she inherited from her father? She has clear moments, when she broods about her failing memory and understands how far she is falling short of managing her life. Then, she also remembers fragments from her past: she had been an outsider in her own family and grossly betrayed by Axel, the great love of her life. And there were the periods in mental asylum.

Despite everything, this isn't a sad story; the writer has given her storyteller an inventive, convincingly old-fashioned language that flows easily and makes this book into a rich reading experience of high literary quality.

Erik Fosnes Hansen Erik Fosnes Hansen was born in New York on June 6, 1965, to Norwegian parents. He was raised and went to school in Oslo. After graduation he worked as a radio journalist for a few years before moving to Stuttgart to study literature and art. In 1985, at the age of twenty, he published his first novel, Falketårnet (The Falcon Tower), an intense psychological and symbolic drama set in the German Empire of the Crusades around 1230 AD. The novel was praised by critics and audience alike as a debut far beyond the ordinary.

His second novel, Salme ved reisens slutt (Hymn at Journey’s End), which was published in Norway in 1990, is about the musicians in the multinational orchestra onboard the ”Titanic” in 1912; an elegic journey through Europe at the fall of an epoch.

Salme ved reisens slutt was received as a sensation by the press and is one of the bestselling Norwegian postwar novels, also outside Scandinavia. It has reached bestseller level and earned superlatives from critics in the nearly thirty countries where is has been published so far. In 1990 Fosnes Hansen was awarded the most prestigeous Norwegian literary award Riksmålprisen for Salme ved reisens slutt, and in 1998 the book was nominated for the international IMPAC Award.

Fosnes Hansen’s third great work Beretninger om beskyttelse (Tales of Protection) was published 1999 and was hailed as a masterpiece and a literary sensation. It is a bestseller in Norway and other countries and was shortlisted for the Aristeion Prize 2000.

Løvekvinnen (The Lion Woman) was published in October 2006. Again Fosnes Hansen made a success, and the novel earned him the Book Seller’s Award.

Fosnes Hansen’s novels have been sold to more than 25 territories worldwide.

In 30 dager i Sandefjord, she investigates the psychic states generated by being held captive: the woman at the centre of her novel has a one-month prison sentence. The writing illuminates the exceptional, strange and almost absurd condition of “being inside” and analyses the effects it has on this resourceful woman. She compares it to returning to childhood, to being ten years old once more and the new girl in the class: how you respond by keeping a very low profile, accepting humiliation, withdrawing. As part of what the author shows to be the practical results of punishment, her protagonist feels put under guardianship, infantilised.

The tone of the storytelling is both direct and literary, and the narrative offers unforgettable portraits of other prisoners. This is a challenging, thought-provoking account of how a Norwegian prison for women is perceived by those inside it.

But the prize-winning author had not quite finished what he wanted to do and now, 23 years later, he has written a completely new novel but on the same theme – he calls it Anger.

Hans Larsen is 72 years old and just released from prison after a long spell inside. He brings with him a letter that has been waiting for him, unopened, all that time. It is from his daughter. These are biting, beautiful life stories of a handful of people and, in particular, an exceptionally powerful recreation of a father-daughter relationship. A great novel, which occupies a key position in Roy Jacobsen's rich literary output.

Roy Jacobsen (1954–) has since his literary début in 1982 with the short story collection Fangeliv evolved into an original, strong and analytical writer with a special interest in the underlying psychology at play in human relationships and actions. He is a wonderful storyteller with obvious political engagement. He has twice been nominated for the Nordic Council's Literary Award: for Seierherrene in 1991, and Frost in 2003. He was also shortlisted for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2009 for his novel Hoggerne.

Odd Klippenvåg (1951–) made his literary début with the novel Nattbilde in 1978. He has since published several novels and short story collections, some of which focus on homosexuality. He has also written a trilogy about the lives of classical composers. Klippenvåg is a critically acclaimed writer whose work is of a rare literary quality.

Just as Fvonk is contemplating life in general, a large, shiny, very clean car of a German make glides up the drive and stops without cutting the engine. It is black, has darkened windows and looks official. Fvonk resents all interference by the authorities and this one in particular.

Travelling together in Asia, Martin shows unexpected sides which force her to try to get away from him. Madelene travels on alone in Latin America, carries on taking drugs and becomes seriously ill. This novel reads like a noir road-movie, with a female protagonist. Leia Starmann's style is young, lively and accomplished.

Marianne Terjesen (1953–) is a journalist who works for the local Rogaland station of NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation). She has published two documentary books: Kitty Kielland and Reisen til byen som ikke finnes.

It's hard to decide my age, but around 2 seems a good bet. A piece of fabric has been fastened to the cycle – it is a label with number series K82–4248. That is the number entered into my reports. The other picture is a portrait and I look a little younger. My hair is shorter, but the eyes are just as sad. This time a label has been pinned to my sweater, and it is the same number: K82–4248. More than forty skeletons were unearthed. One of them shouldn't have been there … This is not true. But it might have been.

Edvard Matre, murder investigator, had returned to the city of Bergen, his home territory. A young woman has been killed, another is in a comatose state, and the two cases have so many features in common that the police begin to fear a serial killer may be at large.

Edvard has to find the murderer before he kills again.

But it's far from easy. The police have nothing solid to go by, no suspects, motives or clues. It is less than helpful that Edvard is told of results from DNA tests: it seems that one of the bodies buried in the Ris mass grave is likely to be his mother. As far as Edvard knows, his mother died in a road traffic accident some ten years ago and is buried in a Bergen churchyard. Edvard Matre is used to not knowing who the murderer is. Suddenly he cannot tell who he is himself.

All of which is far from the truth. But it makes a good story.

Kolbein Falkeid is a much loved and respected poet.

His poems are of high literary worth, but people also understand what they mean. Writing like this is a skill which few have mastered. Because of it, his Samlede dikt (2003) became a best-seller. Many turn to Falkeid when looking for lines of poetry offering comfort, cheer or thoughtful reflections.

Uvisshetens land is a selection which contains the best of Falkeid's poetry. The collection is beautifully illustrated by Ivar Rudi, an artist based in Haugesund, and Torgeir Schjerven has written an inspiring afterword. A book that should appeal to absolutely everyone who loves poetry.

A Small Requiem Lite rekviem Casper André Lugg brings out his first book this autumn, in the 20 under 30 series: it is called A Small Requiem, a collection of poetry. The content deals among other things with how a child learns to speak as it confronts the world, and also what can grow or is broken down in the relationship between the dying and the survivors.

Lite rekviem is a beautiful, quiet collection of poetry from a very promising young writer.

Casper André Lugg (1985–) studied comparative literature at the universities in Oslo and Bergen. He has contributed to Signaler, the anthology for new writers published by Cappelen Damm.

Elisabeth Yndestad (1980–) qualified at the Academy of Creative Writing in Hordaland and contributed to Signaler 08, an anthology of works by new writers. She has also released the EP, Elisabeth Yndestad EP (2006). Forvillelsen is her debut.

One of the crucial issues for activists within this sphere is the fear that groups within Europe’s immigrant communities are in fact agents ready to carry out a much grander, more invasive plan: a future Eurabia, where non-western settlers are in the majority in Europe and gradually attempt to replace western civilisation and culture with conformity to Muslim doctrine and lack of freedom.

Haakon and Maud, volume V Haakon & Maud bind V This is the fifth and final volume in the biography of King Haakon and Queen Maud.

The book begins in 1929 when Crown Prince Olav travels to Stockholm to bring his young bride home. Now, for the first time, we have an authentic account of Queen Maud's illness and death in exile. The main emphasis of the book is however on the Second World War: we follow the royal family through Norway, as they flee from Oslo, via Hamar, to Molde and Tromsø. In this context, Crown Prince Olav becomes particularly important, as he moves into a leading position in the narrative after his mother's death.

Arne Næss Arne Næss When the philosopher Arne Næss died in 2009, at the age of 97, he had almost acquired the status of being a national icon. Arne Næss was an acute professional philosopher, a fearless debater and a daring expedition leader. In the summer of 2006, they started out from Grense Jakobselv, a small community in northern Norway, near the border with Russia.
