Have a great time and I hope to chat with you sometime at Discovery Day. If we have never met, definitely say hello!
Here in the Bay Area, we have so many diverse and talented musicians and what an exciting group we have to feature today! This year’s theme, Bridging Divides, is about bringing together not only different areas of music (pop music, classical music, jazz music, improv and arranging, world music, music for TV/movies/video games, songwriting and composition, different instruments, etc.) but also connecting music with larger life applications of human connection, self-expression, creativity, confidence, and so much more! I encourage you to explore where your past experiences have brought you and where you could continue to go in your own unique way.
Discovery Day 20224
President’s Dear Discovery Day Participants and Attendees, We are very excited to welcome you to our inaugural Discovery Day – an event to bring together teachers, students, and parents in our local community to celebrate, collaborate, and innovate music making. Thank you for taking the time and effort to prepare for and participate in today’s event. We also encourage you to check out all the programs that CAPMT Santa Clara Valley has to offer. Visit our website at www.capmt-scv.org for all the details!
Welcome
Lastly, my humble gratitude goes out to the Discovery Day Committee, each of whom has contributed greatly to seeing this vision through to reality. Even within our Committee, each member brought their unique skills (not just music-related!) and perspectives. Thank you for all that you do for CAPMT and the greater community.

One of the earliest known music pedagogy devices is the Guidonian hand. Dating from over 1,000 years ago, it is a way of mapping pitches from musical scales onto the fingers of the hand. Today research in neuroscience has demonstrated a strong link between mathematical ability and the parts of the brain used for representing fingers, suggesting an embrace of the age-old practice of counting on one’s fingers to learn abstract operations. As students struggle to wrap their heads around staff-based approaches to scales and chords, is it time for a 21st-century return to the Guidonian hand? How can technology unlock this ancient potential?
Pedagogy & Play is an informal setting to discuss various pedagogical topics, and also a chance to perform for each other (optional)!
Ting Luo is a pianist and the director of New Arts Collaboration. She has performed and lectured in prestigious venues in China and the U.S., advocating contemporary and classical music. Her interdisciplinary art project New Arts Collaboration has been featured in many contemporary music and film festivals around the U.S. and internationally.
