CMS ALLIANCE FUNDRAISERS BENEFIT THE CMS
FOUNDATION’S WE CARE NETWORK
2022 CMS Alliance President Codie Bryant presented a $1,500 check to CMS Foundation Executive Director Pam Irwin for its We Care Network program on November 16, 2022. The CMSA hosted two successful fundraisers last year that raised funds to support not only the We Care Network but also Lee’s Place and the Panhandle Area Education Consortium.
Their successful Holiday Card fundraiser was recognized at the state level as a model for other medical society alliances. Their Wine and
Whiskey event in November 2022 was enjoyed by all who attended. The CMS Alliance has been an incredible partner in assisting with the Holiday Auction and the Celebration Awards Dinner. Last year, they also provided Ensure for a We Care Network patient and are partnering with the CMSF on its “Feed a Medical Student, Grow a Doctor” initiative to reduce food insecurity for students at the FSUCOM Tallahassee Regional Campus. We are so grateful to our friends at the CMSA and applaud them for their leadership in the community!

CALLING FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE
I.B. HARRISON, M.D. HUMANITARIAN AWARD AND THE THOMAS L. HICKS, M.D. OUTSTANDING
PHYSICIAN AWARD
The Capital Medical Society and the Capital Medical Society Alliance will host the annual Celebration Awards Dinner on March 30, 2023 at the Dunlap Champions Club at FSU, in honor of Doctors’ Day. At the event, we will be awarding the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award, a prestigious award initiated by Capital Health Plan, and the Thomas L. Hicks, M.D. Outstanding Physician Award.
The criteria for the awards differ. The criteria for the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award are predicated on the values that came to be associated with the late Dr. I.B. Harrison: treating all patients with respect and dignity. Dr. Harrison was known as the voice for the ethical, compassionate practice of medicine. He is not only the inspiration for the award, but its first recipient, as well.
The Thomas L. Hicks, M.D. Outstanding Physician Award honors a physician who has demonstrated distinguished leadership in organized medicine,
community volunteerism, political and governmental activities, clinical excellence, and educational activities; particularly with medical students. The late Dr. Hicks is not only the inspiration for the award, but its first recipient, as well.
We are seeking nominations from the CMS membership as both of these awards are awarded to physicians by their peers.
Included in this issue of Cap Scan (pages 12 and 13) are the nomination forms. Please give thoughtful consideration to nominating a physician for each award. Please mail or email your completed nomination forms to the Capital Medical Society. All nominations are held in the strictest of confidence.
The deadline for nominations is January 17th.

This is an adapted version of the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, one of several such validated instruments used to assess the presence of burnout in many occupations. Each of these instruments, including this one, has its own unique advantages and limitations. By answering the questions and tallying your score, you will be able to determine your score. Scores range from 16-64. Scores above 35 have been correlated with higher rates of burnout.

DRIVING, DATING, AND HURTING
By Charles D. Williams, M.D., FACR, FAAP (“Pedro”)
Dating in Simpler Times was not exactly simple, but it was exciting, filled with humor and clumsiness, and sometimes associated with hurt. Romance was often seen through rose-colored glasses and when hurt did occur, youth had the ability to quickly rebound and heal.
Mama told Pedro’s sisters and cousins that the way to a man’s heart was through his stomach. Once, Hazel, who was in her teens, was visiting the home place at suppertime. We usually had beans and taters and some nights we had taters and beans, but on this night we were having liver. One good thing about liver was that you could always get enough of it. A good-looking young man from the Norman Park community dropped by and Mama told Hazel that it was OK to ask him to stay for supper. Hazel then said to him, “The weather’s bad and you’d better stay and have some liver with us.” He replied, “Thank you. I’m much obliged, but the weather ain’t that bad.”
One could not do any serious courtin’ without a driver’s license and a car. In 1956, Pedro and the 1949 Ford had a few problems. Pedro had starter problems and sometimes overheated. The car had door problems and the door on the passenger side had to be tied shut with haywire and the front seat rolled forward when you hit the brakes. Pedro and that car circled the courthouse square in Moultrie, Georgia, so many times looking for girls that the price of gas went up.
One could not properly date without a driver’s license and the state patrolman only came to Moultrie every two weeks to give the test. Upon turning sixteen, Pedro couldn’t wait. Mama reluctantly gave in and took Pedro to Thomasville to take his driver’s test. Upon receiving his driver’s license, Pedro took a quick look and said, “Mama, if I look like my driver’s license picture I’m too sick to drive back home.”
Pedro will never forget his first real date all by himself. He was real nervous, but Mama told Pedro just to be himself if his date could put up with it. When Pedro arrived at the door to pick her up and she was actually prettier than a speckled puppy.
Pedro and his date headed to the Sunset Drive-In. Upon arrival, he put the speaker on the window and got settled in. The people in the next car over were giggling and making loud noises. Pedro felt that anybody having that kind of fun had to be sinning. Pedro then remembered that the preacher once asked, “What must you do before you can expect forgiveness of sins?” Someone in the third pew shouted back, “You must sin.” Pedro felt like he needed to be real careful ‘cause people in Moultrie were able to hear the news before it never happened.
After the movie, Pedro headed to a dead-end road near Ballard’s dairy farm off Thomasville highway where there was a lot of dirt between the houses. When he got there, there were already a lot of other cars. Some folks called this Lovers Lane. Pedro put his arms around his date and she said, “Don’t kiss me. I got scruples.” Pedro stopped. He did not want to catch the scruples. He knew a lot of Baptists with scruples and it stayed with them most of their lives. After a while the police arrived and people started leaving like ants in a burning log.
When Pedro got home, Dad asked, “Where have you been most of the night?” Pedro told him that he had been riding around with the guys. Dad replied, “Well, one of the guys left his lipstick in the car.”
During the night, Pedro had it figured out that he had fallen in love. Next day he went by to tell her that he was not worthy of her love. He didn’t get the chance. She told him first. Pedro’s heart was aching. His lips felt numb and there was something in his throat. He didn’t know if he could make it to the driveway with all that hurt, but he tried. As he was leaving, Pedro decided to look back for the last time, and for the first time he noticed that she was no longer pretty.
Note: Colquitt Regional Medical Center now sits on the old Lovers Lane.

The Impact of Private Support:
The Capital Medical Society Foundation’s community of donors strategically help fulfill its mission “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.”
➢ Access to healthcare is increased through gifts to the We Care Network and the We Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $124 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2021-22, which ended June 30, 2022, more than $5 million in healthcare was donated. Gifts support the operational expenses of the program including salaries and benefits of the case management team who coordinate the donated care.
➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at the FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the CMS Foundation Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $50,000 was awarded in 2022. An additional $1,000 was awarded from The Anesthesiology Associates of Tallahassee Scholarship Fund. $1,000 was also awarded from The Charles D. “Pedro” Williams, M.D. Scholarship Fund. In 2022, the first Julia Revell St. Petery, M.D. Scholarship in Pediatrics was awarded.
➢ Gifts to the Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operational resources for the Capital Medical Society Foundation. In addition, modest grants are awarded to area non-profits whose programs improve access to healthcare for the underserved. In 2022, the CMSF awarded a total of $10,500 in grants to Elder Care Services for their In-Home Services Program, the Big Bend Hospice Foundation for bereavement services, and to Lutheran Social Services of North Florida, Inc.’s KidSafe program
Gifts to Honor and In Memoriam:
