Arizona Road Trip: Exploring the Desert

Taking a road trip in Arizona offers a scenic journey through the stunning landscapes and iconic destinations of central Arizona. This road trip showcases the diverse beauty of Arizona from its capital city Phoenix to the vibrant desert terrain of Cave Creek, located in the Sonoran Desert, to the majestic red rock formations of Sedona to the southern rim of the Grand Canyon. This picturesque drive promises “must see” opportunities and side trips that will be worth the trip.

BEGIN IN PHOENIX

Phoenix, the capital city of Arizona, serves as the starting point for the journey. Before hitting the road, take time to explore the city’s attractions, such as the Desert Botanical Garden, Heard Museum; or take a stroll through downtown Phoenix. In leaving Phoenix for Cave Creek, the landscape transitions from urban city to desert with earthy shades of dusty rose, muted orange, tan, and mossy green.

CAVE CREEK Nestled in the desert foothills of the Sonoran Desert, this charming town is known for its cowboy heritage, arts and music scene, and outdoor recreational activities. We recommend taking in all that Cave Creek has to offer by exploring the town’s unique shops, art galleries, dining, and the Cave Creek Museum to learn about the area’s history. Local activities include horseback riding through the Sonoran Desert or the Saguaro forests; hiking the desert oasis of Cave Creek Regional Park; biking the desert trails; and, playing a round of golf. Family friendly activities include Gold Prospecting Adventures where the entire family can pan for gold along the river.

ALONG THE DRIVE TO SEDONA:

The road trip to Sedona provides ample opportunities to make stops, take detours, and explore the attractions along the way. You may consider extending your journey by visiting nearby attractions such as Tonto National Forest; Montezuma Castle National Monument, featuring indigenous ruins including ancient Native American cliff dwellings, or Jerome, once known as the Wickedest Town in America but today is an old mining town perched on the side of Mingus Mountain. Along the way, enjoy the breathtaking vistas of the cactus-studded hills and desert hillsides.

Next stop is Slide Rock State Park, a natural water park in the summer and one of the most beautiful sites in Arizona.

SEDONA The scenic drive meanders through the famous red rock landscapes of Sedona.

The awe-inspiring beauty of the towering red rock formations greet travelers while serving as the gateway to this beautiful city. Take the time to explore the town’s art galleries, indulge in local cuisine, and experience the healing properties of the vortexes that draw visitors from around the world. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, or take a scenic drive along Oak Creek Canyon. The renowned Red Rock State Park provides ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to hike, bike, and discover the area’s hidden treasures. Trails wind through pristine canyons, revealing hidden pools, ancient petroglyphs, and panoramic vistas at every turn. The Oak Creek Canyon, often referred to as the “Little Grand Canyon,” is a “must-visit” destination within Sedona, offering picturesque drives, camping spots, and serene picnic areas alongside the crystal-clear waters of Oak Creek.

GRAND CANYON Venturing to the Grand Canyon from Sedona provides awe-inspiring beauty of the panoramic vistas, towering desert cliffs and lush forests on the two-hour journey. Along the way, pay a visit to historic Flagstaff. Today, it’s a bustling city with attractions, historic sites, art galleries, local cuisine, and the Lowell Observatory. Spend a couple of hours exploring this historic town (en route or on the return trip) before continuing to the Grand Canyon.

At Grand Canyon National Park, the south rim (the Sedona side of the park) is the most popular entrance and offers numerous lookouts with breathtaking views of the canyon. Take time to hike along the rim, hike down the canyon, take a guided tour, raft along the Colorado River, or explore the canyon by helicopter. Iconic points of interest include Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Desert View.

The best time of year to visit these breathtaking desert locations is October-November. During the fall, the weather is mild and enjoyable with fewer people visiting. Sedona is stunning with the fall colors changing against the red rocks. Another great time to visit is spring (March through May) when the weather is warming before it’s too hot for hiking, hot air ballooning, golfing, and exploring.

Remember to check road conditions, plan for sufficient travel time, and have a map or GPS navigation system handy. Enjoy the scenic drive, immerse yourself in the natural beauty, and create lasting memories as you venture from Phoenix to Cave Creek to Sedona to the Grand Canyon, discovering the wonders of Arizona’s diverse landscapes.

With an elevation of 7,200 feet, Pinetop-Lakeside features cooler summer temperatures in an alpine setting of tall mountain ranges, lush foliage, and year-round outdoor adventure.

Recreational activities include trout fishing, hiking, horseback riding, golf, hunting, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, sledding, and snowmobiling. On the Trail of the Nation’s Best Barbecue SAVORING THE SMOKE

Barbecue in the United States is a diverse and beloved culinary tradition with regional variations that reflect different styles of cooking, sauces, and meats. Traditionally prepared by cooking meat low and slow over an indirect flame, barbecue has long fueled a heated feud amongst the most ardent aficionados in the barbecue belt.

The beloved barbecue belt, which runs from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico and bordered by Kansas City and Texas, is comprised of four distinct barbecue styles: Carolina, Kansas City, Memphis, and Texas. Vinegar-based “whole hog” barbecue is found in Virginia and the Carolinas. Plus, South Carolina has a mustard-based sauce. Memphis-style barbecue is a sweet, tomato-based sauce using molasses as a base. The Kansas

It is believed that American barbecue’s origin is traced back to the Caribbean and Chrstopher Columbus. The indigenous tribes that he encountered on the island used green wood and indirect heat to keep the food from burning. The Spanish called it barbacoa. Spanish explorers who followed Columbus took this cooking technique with them as they expanded north. The Colonists influenced its growth and popularity by seasoning the meat and sauces with the flavors of their homeland and local settlements. Southern colonies preferred pork due to its being a low maintenance protein. Whether beef or pork, there’s no denying that each barbecue variation has its own unique flavors.

LANDMARK HOLIDAY BEACH RESORT

Panama City Beach, FL

Beginning October 2022, following 18 months of planning, Landmark Resort started a $3 Million dollar renovation project to replace all sliding glass doors and picture windows on the beach side of the property. Funding was derived from a Hurricane Michael insurance settlement and supporting owners contributing additional $325.00 in special assessment.

Utilizing a local engineering company and experienced construction company familiar with the property the process started at the top of the building on each of the twobedroom condos, working its way down to the third floor. Additional phases carried the project through the three-bedroom condos, ending with the two-story townhouse condos.

Additional reconstruction was necessary with the discovery of structural elements requiring additional support, increasing overall cost with $313,000 in change orders. Shortly after Capital Vacations completed agreements with Landmark Resort, the onsite team and various management company departments coordinated efforts to accommodate owners and guests impacted by the ever-changing schedule challenges. As with most large projects
