A message from your COO

I love this time of year with the excitement of holiday travel and our annual winter excursion. In planning this issue of Club Connection, we wanted to help inspire your next winter vacation. We explored snowy winter getaways filled with outdoor adventures perfect for owners that don’t let cold temperatures slow them down. And for those that do head south when temperatures drop, we love our Caribbean resorts with their consistently warm temps and blue seas. There’s no time like the present to book your last-minute winter vacation or to begin planning next year’s getaway. I hope you find some travel inspiration in this edition of Club Connection.

It has been another incredible year for Capital Vacations and our Club owners. We continued to grow the number of Club properties welcoming 32 new resorts as Club Destinations. We launched Destinality, our new travel services platform that includes Lifestyles+ and Global Exchange. Capital Vacations Club now boasts 80+ resorts coast to coast, including the Caribbean and Hawaii, with availability Club owners starting in 2023. We’re unveiling some of the newest destinations in this issue because it’s never too early to begin planning for your next vacation.

Many of you may know that Hurricane Ian impacted several of our resorts in Florida and up through the east coast. We invested in new technology and customer support to better service our owners and help you create vacation memories. When natural disasters or events happen at our resorts, I’m always impressed by our resort teams and leaders who work night and day to ensure the safety of our employees and owners. Our teams respond quickly during the events and even afterwards as several our employees lost their homes during Ian; so, Capital Vacations created an employee relief fund to aid those

in need and don’t stop after disaster strikes. To aid displaced employees we created a Hurricane Ian employee relief fund. We continue to work with resorts and owners to reschedule missed vacations across the region and into 2023. Learn more in our story on managing resorts in critical situations in this issue.

Thank you for being a valued Capital Vacations Club owner. We strive to create vacation memories for our Club members, and I encourage you to share memories and photos from your vacations. My favorite part of the magazine is seeing our owners’ smiling faces and the adventures you have with your families. These are the moments that create the memories you will share in years to come. These are the memories I have from the family vacations I took as a kid. Plus, when you share your memories, you are entered into our photo contest. We recently announced the 2022 winners of a 4-day/3-night vacation. Congratulations to our winners. There’s still time to enter the photo contest and a chance to win our last trip of 2022.

If you need help in booking a trip, we invite you to call our Vacation Concierge team at 1-844-777-CLUB (2582).

As you celebrate the holidays with your loved ones and ring in 2023, all of us at Capital Vacations wish you a healthy and happy new year.

Steamboat Springs Offers Year-Round Fun for Everyone

Steamboat Springs is nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in northwest Colorado.

Locals and visitors enjoy breathtaking views as they explore mother nature’s mountain peaks, meadows, and lakes along with the Yampa River and eight natural hot spring pools. The genuine cowboy culture of this laid-back Western town permeates every aspect of Steamboat Springs including its vibrant downtown, arts and culture, and special events throughout the year. It’s very common to see both locals and visitors in cowboy boots walking alongside those heading to the mountains in their ski boots.

Known as Ski Town, USA, the town thrives in the winter as visitors enjoy its Champagne Powder® snow and geothermal hot springs. For non-skiers, never fear, there are endless opportunities to explore the outdoors on foot, by lift, snow mobile, or horse ride. For those that prefer to hibernate in the winter, mother nature and Steamboat Springs do not disappoint with moderate temperatures from Spring to Fall and just as many opportunities to actively (or lazily explore) the outdoors. The town and area are very accommodating to visitors, providing lessons or guides for most activities. Everyone is encouraged to participate regardless of age or skill level.

16 | CLUB Connection | Fall/Winter 2022 | CapitalVacationsClub.com | 1-844-777-CLUB (2582)

WINTER

Steamboat Springs is known for its champagne powder snow. For those “in the snow,” champagne powder snow is very light, dry and smooth; and considered the best snow for skiing. However, it’s too light and dry (94 percent air and 6 percent snow water) to use for snowballs (a note for anyone who takes delight in snowball fights).

There are lots of activities to enjoy during the winter besides hitting the slopes: dog sledding, night skiing, ice fishing*, hot air ballooning, sleighing, sightseeing, ice climbing, ice skating, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and enjoying natural hot springs. A new indoor pickleball and tennis center is slated to open this winter. For those inexperienced in driving in snow, there is a winter driving school conducted on a controlled course for you to learn in authentic conditions.

SPRING

Spring awakening happens a little slower in Steamboat Springs as the champagne powder snow is brightened with sunshine and mild days. Visitors are even reminded to apply sunscreen before heading out on the slopes or for a hike through the parks. As winter fully thaws, Steamboat Springs comes alive and spring emerges. Outdoor activities that abound transition to biking, horseback riding, hiking, fly-fishing*, shopping, sightseeing, boating and rafting (canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding), strolling through botanical gardens, golfing, and, hot air ballooning. Get out and explore the local trails, fields and lower mountain ranges to discover the first blooms of the season likely yellow glacier lilies or delicate wildflowers.

SUMMER

The American West comes alive during the summer months with an explosion of natural beauty and the celebration of native and local. The Rocky Mountains provide the perfect landscape for memorable family summer vacations. Everyone in the family can find a fun activity to enjoy the great outdoors: mountain biking; boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, white water rafting and tubing; fishing*; water skiing; strolling the botanical gardens; sight-seeing; golfing; taking a gondola ride up the mountain; hiking mountain trails; horseback riding; hot air ballooning; hunting; recreational vehicle touring; attending rodeos; swimming; and, picnicking. There are two beaches, and thus nice cool swimming holes, in Steamboat Springs, the Beach at Burgess creek at the base of Mt Werner and small beaches

along the Yampa River in downtown. Watercraft rental is available at the Stagecoach State Park and Steamboat Lake Park. Looking for a family-friendly outing? Kids love Amaze’n Steamboat for its miniature golf, human maze, Water Walkerz, gemstone panning and much more. The Howler Alpine Slide is a favorite of kids of all ages. Wind down 2400-foot track while overlooking downtown Steamboat Springs (operates Summers only). National forest trails promise waterfalls, mines, and natural wildlife. Truly, there is something for everyone!

FALL

Fall brings cooler temperatures and an explosion of color with the mountain foliage. It’s the perfect time to explore mountain trails by hiking, biking, or running. Other can’t-miss fall activities include watching migrating sandhill cranes prepare for their southern journey; visiting the legendary 280ft waterfalls at Fish Creek Falls; soaking in the natural hot springs; taking a scenic drive winding past colorful landscape; climbing the inactive volcano at Hahn’s Peak to experience one of the most stunning views in Northwest Colorado; golfing; riding horseback through the Aspens; touring local distillery and breweries; fly-fishing*; and, exploring local art galleries, museums and historical sites.

Vacationing in Colorado means unplugging and taking the time to enjoy life and nature at a slower pace. The area is a natural playground for all ages with thrilling adventures and quiet moments around the fire. Steamboat Springs

promises fabulous vacation memories for the entire family.

The mountains of North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia are considered bear country. Bear Sightings are more likely to take place in spring and early summer. Typically, younger black bears, under 2 years old, can be seen as they are leaving their mothers and trying to find their own territories.

If a black bear is seen, guests are encouraged to stay calm and not panic. The bear may be foraging for food or looking for a safe place. Black bears are more likely to flee than attack. Encounter tips include facing the bear, spreading arms above head to appear taller, and banging things or making lots of noise to encourage the bear to turn away.

Preparation and Protocols Help Capital Vacations Weather the Storms

Boasting 825 miles of coastline, Florida attracts visitors year-round to its coastal habitats which include sandy beaches, dunes, grasslands, maritime hammocks, estuaries, and more. All this coastline also makes it the most hurricaneprone state in the United States. With 39 resorts in the Sunshine State and more than half of its resorts along the coast, Capital Vacations knows the importance of hurricane preparedness.

The seasoned team at Capital Vacations has developed countless protocols to tackle the variety of disasters that may strike its resorts. Those protocols have been instrumental in keeping employees, owners, and guests safe while weathering the storms, sometimes literally.

Senior Vice President of Operations, Alex S. Chamblin, Jr. credits preparation and experience for the team’s success in maintaining operations while ensuring the safety of everyone involved. He says, “Handling disasters is second nature for our team. Many of our resort leaders have spent

According to Trish Docherty, Regional Vice President of Operations, everyone from the resort staff to regional teams and corporate leaders participates in “just in case” disaster preparations. Capital Vacations has a tested game plan to follow throughout the event – from preparations to cleanup. When a potential disaster is on the horizon, an emergency response team immediately begins working with each resort, including its board of directors, that may be impacted. Constant communication is an integral part of preparing for any disaster and that includes keeping everyone informed: resorts, employees, boards, owners, and guests.

“We’re quite proud of our whole process. The association boards, that we work with, are pleased with the communication that comes out of our office,” said Trish Docherty, Regional Vice President of Operations, Florida. “Our communication piece as a company is really done well.”

In addition to communicating with internal team members, Capital Vacations assembles

as facilities, engineering, insurance claims, debris removal, and more is vital to a speedy recovery and return to normal operations. Once the disaster strikes, the Capital Vacations team quickly assesses the damage and then mobilizes the teams to support recovery.

“If you do your prep work ahead of time, there’s not much you can do until the storm hits,” Docherty noted. “No amount of preparation can be done to stop certain things – they just happen. You can’t predict what’s going to happen during a natural disaster. All you can do is prepare the best you can. (For example) we have found, through experience, that the resorts that spent the money and installed hurricane shutters have had the least amount of damage.”

Within 43 days, Hurricanes Ian and Nicole slammed Florida. Making landfall in southwest Florida, Ian caused significant storm surge and widespread damage. Nicole’s wrath pounded the Treasure Coast and caused ‘unprecedented’ building damage to beachfront resorts and homes. Both hurricanes washed out major roads in the state.

Prepped and ready, Capital Vacations’ emergency response team quickly

assessed damage to each resort. With so many resorts in the area, the regional leaders were able to personally visit our resorts and mobilize the needed crews to both inspect and address damage. Several resorts remain closed due to severe damage while others were able to open shortly after impact.

Docherty shared, “Everyone is vested in the outcome. We all work together. Our goal is to reopen as quickly as possible and help our guests get back to enjoying their vacations. It’s essential that the properties are safe and operational before making that happen.”

At the end of every force majeure, the Capital Vacations team reviews its protocols and steps taken or lessons learned. The team has learned that preventative measures and protocols can reduce the severity of the loss.

“Something can happen at any time,” Chamblin added. “That’s the reason you have all the property rules, and safety conditions in place. It ensures success in tackling the outcome, whatever that may be.” •••

What is your role at Capital Vacations?

How long have you worked in this position?

I am the Supervisor of the Customer Service department and have been with the company since May 2018.

Name something people would never guess you do in your role?

Mentoring - I enjoy working with my agents to help them bring out their talents that I see in them. I am an active listener who is enthusiastic about helping them achieve their goals.

What do you like most about working with our Owners or at Capital Vacations?

I have enjoyed working here and continue to, for one reason...RELATIONSHIPS. I enjoy the relationships I have formed with some of our longtime owners, like Larry and Jean. I visit them every time they come to Myrtle Beach. They are Platinum owners and enjoy traveling with us. Also, the relationships with my co-workers and management. We are truly a family, and they make coming to work every day enjoyable.

What makes you good at your job?

Customer Service...I love to assist our owners with their needs and wants. I put our owners first and listen to their story to better assist them in getting the most out of their membership.

At Capital Vacations, we tell our Boards and Club members that “Your Passion is Our Purpose”. What is your passion?

My perfectly imperfect family at home and at work. My family at home keeps me on my toes and helps me to achieve the goals I am shooting for. My “work” family does the same. We all share a passion for what we do every day, we have a passion for customer service.

What is your role at Capital Vacations? How long have you worked in this position?

I am the Manager of Owner Services for the Orlando Contact Center and I have been with the company since June of this year.

Name something people would never guess you do in your role?

Take inbound calls in the call center from members. I love talking to members and making reservations and dreams come true for them.

What do you like most about working with our Owners or at Capital Vacations?

What I love most about working here is the team. The team makes it worth every early morning or late evening that I work. We have become a family in so many ways, and it is because of them and their efforts that Capital Vacations continues to thrive and grow leaps and bounds.

What makes you good at your job?

Love. Love for people, love for the brand, love for the industry, and love for the culture we have built. It makes me approach all things in a very unique way. I am reminded of how much was invested into me in all my years in this industry and I strive to give that love and care back to those I encounter each and every day.

At Capital Vacations, we tell our Boards and Club members that “Your Passion is Our Purpose”. What is your passion?

Family. My children make me want to be the best I can be. I am reminded every day that a kid from the Bronx who grew up in some of the worst neighborhoods can make it out and work hard and be in a position where I can change lives and be a part of making decisions with the greatest company in the world. I love what I do but my passion of family is what makes me want to be the best.

We love getting pictures of our owners and their families on vacation. Whether you travel to a Capital Vacations Club resort or travel with Destinality on a cruise or hotel stay, we want to share in your memories. Each quarter the team selects the best vacation photos and notifies the winners of their prize.

We notified our Q1, Q2, and Q3 winners recently and mailed out their prizes. Three (3) lucky owners won a free 4-day/3-night vacation at a Capital Vacations resort of their choice. Join us in congratulating these three lucky winners. We hope our readers enjoyed the memories they shared as much as we did.

There’s still time to submit your vacation memories for a chance to win our final prizes for 2022. We have one more 4-day/3-night vacation to give away along with some Capital Vacations swag-bags. Don’t wait - send in your photos today!
