Morning keynote: meet marion!
Marion Franklin, MCC
When Marion Franklin was in the early stages of her coaching career nearly thirty years ago and introduced herself as a coach, people often responded by asking, “What sport?”
Now thankfully! awareness of the benefits of coaching abounds Since Marion got her start in the early 1990s, the coaching profession has grown exponentially and deepened in sophistication, and
hanks in large part to her leadership and generosity mpact will extend further still, as she shares wisdom and nce attendees
Marion’s path to and through coaching is admirable, yet still relatable Through investment in her own self development and personal growth, Marion learned a great deal about human behavior and our capacity to change Inspired by one facilitator in particular, her eyes were opened to the possibility of helping others experience similar growth; she realized that he was serving as a coach even if that term wasn’t in regular use yet and that she could become one, too.
Marion became one of the first members of the fledgling International Coaching Federation after its founding in 1995, and went on to achieve PCC and MCC certifications while building and growing her coaching practice, Life Coaching Group. As she gained thousands of hours coaching clients and grew her family, Marion remained a student of life, collecting observations and identifying patterns in human behavior which enabled her to become more effective and efficient in her coaching
A former teacher, Marion was naturally inclined to share her systems and wisdom with other coaches, and her career evolved to include coach training, mentorship, and writing. Her book, The Heart of Laser Focused Coaching, chronicles the method of coaching Marion established and gives coaches and helpers everywhere access to her simple and direct presentation of the complex concepts it includes.
As Marion describes it, coaching is an opportunity to get closer, sooner, to what it is one really wants Through her teaching and writing, she helps coaches of all levels do exactly that: to get closer, sooner, to more effective and efficient coaching.

Help, my client might need therapy! Coaching vs. therapy and when to refer
The global presence of anxiety and depression increased by 25% in the first year of the COVID 19 pandemic, according to a World Health Organization scientific brief released in early March 2022. While the situation may be improving for some, many remain impacted by continued stressors such as burnout, insecurity, or isolation. Given the prevalence of mental health issues triggered by the pandemic, it is increasingly likely that coaches will encounter a client better suited for a licensed mental health professional. The ICF core competency of ethical practice requires coaches to understand the distinctions between coaching, psychotherapy, and other support professions.
Participants in this workshop will learn how mental health professionals diagnose and treat mental health disorders, with an emphasis on how therapy differs from coaching. Resources available to help a coach make a referral will also be identified. This will be an interactive session including client scenarios for discussion.

It’s Not So Black and White: Cross-racial Coaching in Today’s World
This interactive workshop tackles the topic of cross racial coaching in 2020s America. Two core beliefs shape the session: 1) it can be difficult to discuss race and racial differences in interracial settings and 2) racial differences do make a difference in coaching engagements. The two presenters, one white, one Black, will help attendees gain a better understanding of what it means to be race-conscious with clients and prospective clients and more importantly why it matters. Attendees will participate in an activity designed to help them become more sensitized to the ways that they signal their own race consciousness in their public facing messaging and learn effective approaches in coaching across racial lines.
Note: although this workshop focuses on Black/white coaching engagements (Black client/white coach or white client/Black coach), we believe coaches can use the principles highlighted in this workshop with other types of crosscultural coaching engagements.

What Do MCCs Know Anyway? “Ego & Authenticity”
Learning to coach can mean adopting unfamiliar ways of comporting ourselves. Behaviors we might fall into as a matter of course — agreeing or disagreeing with our conversational partners, demonstrating our knowledge, seeking to please others, or getting our way become forms of conduct we actively let go of as we cultivate a coaching mindset and presence. A form of overcorrection coaches frequently display is a focus on the client so hard that the coach seems to evaporate. A coach who does this will limit the depth of the partnership they can enter into with their client. To spark a more thought provoking and creative process, a coach can learn to bring their whole self to the relationship: the fullness of their observations, insights, feelings, all of it masterfully managed and fully attuned to the needs of the client, the situation, and a vibrant partnership.

Transform the Saboteurs: Tap the Body’s Wisdom
This presentation will have you experience the power of feeling your Saboteurs from the body brain, not just from the mind. In this session we will invite you into an embodied exploration. We will move with our Saboteurs and find our way back to center so that our actions become more skillful, aligned with our values and purpose, and responsive to what is needed in the moment. As you start to get super familiar with the Somatic Saboteurs, your embodied awareness will allow you to take a powerful pause to transform the feelings and mental anguish. Neuroscience tells us that the body brain knows before the cognitive mind. The mind telling the Saboteurs to be quiet is not as immediate, powerful and transformative as the body allowing the Saboteur to reveal itself and what it needs. You will leave with a practice and a commitment that will help you and your clients in a sustainable way to shift away from being sabotaged by worn out habits.

The Coach as Mentor: How to Create an Effective Mentor Coaching Experience
Mentor coaching is the beautiful pairing of mentoring and coaching, whereby the mentor applies their advanced coaching skill, as well as the wisdom of experience, towards facilitating meaningful growth in a mentee’s coaching skills. In essence, mentor coaching expands the power of coaching exponentially since mentees will go on to impact countless others through their coaching. Thus, mentor coaches must take their role very seriously and approach the mentor mentee relationship with equal parts openness and clear intention. In this interactive session, we will address how mentors can intentionally apply adult learning principles to connect with mentees and accelerate their learning and growth.

You’ll find out and practice how to do that through story typing, a uniquely energizing coaching framework for activating any client’s innate narrative intelligence. Discover how story typing can dramatically enhance coaching conversations and impact — and move your clients to a higher level of authentic engagement and inspired action. connecting with inherent awareness to boost your leadership potential
Leading in a complex world demands transformational learning that focuses on the ways people think, engage, and act in qualitatively more adaptive and integrated ways. Mindfulness practice is a fundamental tool for cultivating presence and paying attention to consciousness. When client and coach are individually engaged in the practice of mindfulness, as part of the coaching relationship, they gain insight into how the way they make sense of things can obscure self awareness and self knowledge. When deepened, mindfulness practice can also awaken a level of consciousness that exists at the very core of our being—what Dr. Ruth Zaplin calls “inherent awareness.” It is this inherent awareness that is the wellspring of presence, authenticity, compassion, wisdom, and ethical conduct—the very competencies that enhance mindful and skillful leadership.

Leveraging the “Problem and Person” Polarity as Coaches
This session will explore the polarity theory developed by Barry Johnson, and how “And thinking” can be used to leverage a key polarity tension in the coaching relationship. Because polarity tensions are ongoing, they will be there for coaches and clients today, tomorrow, and beyond! In this session one of the presenters will share her case example of using the Polarity Map to see and leverage the Problem And the Person polarity on her coaching journey. Demystifying the Path to MCC
This presentation will support attendees with creating an action plan for their journey from the ICF PCC to MCC credential. Sophia Casey, MCC emphasizes ontological coaching as a backdrop to explore the differences and commonalities between the credential levels. The interactive presentation will give the attendees opportunities in large and small groups to explore Being vs Doing for each ICF Core Competency. From the perspective of ontological coaching, the presentation outlines not only the active part of the process of attaining the MCC but also the mindset required in order to become an MCC with ease and flow. Sophia used this process to support coaches with preparing to apply for ICF credentials. She boasts that 100% of the coaches she’s mentored, who applied for the credentials, received them.

Laser-Focused Coaching
Laser Focused Coaching techniques allow you to go deeper in your coaching sessions. Throughout the session, listen to several mini snippets of masterful coaching exemplifying the different principles. Hear examples of the easiest and least effectively used coaching tool that makes all the difference. Easily avoid common pitfalls that prevent conversations from being transformational and life altering. Distinguishing truth from perception is key to getting to the heart of the matter. Know that there is never a right question and how easy it is to make every question thought provoking and powerful. Masterful coaching requires focusing solely on the person and recognizing underlying themes, thus making the coaching more effective and efficient.

Coaching on the Roller Coaster – Supporting the Social Entrepreneur’s Ride
We are coaching people who see what’s missing today and are looking at tomorrow and beyond in everything they do, everything they create. Because they are the innovators, they are often brilliant idea people with a strong sense of purpose, highly motivated and very mission driven. However, just as often, they have limited business savvy, lack structured business and workplace experiences, have few mentors, and constrained resources and are often working in isolation. Most social entrepreneurs thrive with coaching – it helps to build the skills they need to create sustainable enterprises that will change the world. More importantly, it helps to build their resilience to smooth out the roller coaster ride they are embarking upon, give them the tools to prevent burnout, and enable them to develop perspective.

The Impact of Bias on Coaching: Awareness, Introspection, and Action
Each and every one of us, including coaches, is biased towardsomething, somebody, orsomegroup.Biasesallow ustofilterinformationandnavigateourcomplexworld. But,notallbiasesserveuswell.Ourbiasescouldimpact our ability to coach according to the eight ICF core competencies.
So,whatcanwedoaboutit?First, webecomesensitizedto what bias is and why we have it (awareness), then we recognizeourownbiases(introspection)andimproveour ways(action).Thisprocessofawareness, introspectionand actionwillleadtobuildingbetterrelationshipswithour clients.
As coaches, being aware of what is below the surface for ourselves will enable us to interact with our clients, colleagues, and community with greater insight. This awareness and understanding about the unconscious bias in us and others will enable us to build better relationships and step into the hard work of dismantling systemic racism.

Navigating the Unknowable: The Paradox of Coaching Conversations and the Implications for Reaching Mastery
Each coaching conversation is a complex social process of relating between people, the outcome of which is consistently predictably unpredictable or unpredictably predictable. As soon as we start to truly accept uncertainty and the paradoxical nature of the coaching conversation, new options start to open up for how to be present and respond to what’s going on. In the workshop, we will explore the complexity, the paradox, the challenges, and the opportunities for mastering self, the relationship, and the coaching process.
