Ministry on a mission close to home

BY KATE STEVENS

Special to The Advocate GONZALES — Congregation members at First United Methodist Church of Gonzales have been conducting missionary work in other parts of the United States and overseas for years. But, here at home, the need is just as great. That’s why Ed and Margaret Holton, of Maurepas, revived the church’s defunct Helping Hands ministry earlier this year to help the elderly and disabled in Ascension Parish. “It’s amazing what you see in your own community,” said Ed Holton, 58. “The people who

are struggling just to have a decent roof over their heads and a floor under their feet.” The church’s Helping Hands Ministry provides minor home repairs for those in need, particularly if these much-needed repairs affect the health and safety of the home’s residents, Holton said. One of the greatest needs the ministry has seen is a request for wheelchair ramps, he said. The ministry has partnered with the Ascension Council on Aging for help in identifying needy residents and raising funds for the project, said Darlene Schexnayder, COA executive director. “They’re doing great work,”

said Schexnayder. “We appreciate all the work they’re doing for the senior citizens.” The COA is a nonprofit group formed to help Ascension senior citizens remain independent and self-sufficient as long as possible, Schexnayder said. Holton approached the COA for help in identifying those who could use assistance and Schexnayder said she “jumped at the chance.” The COA depends on volunteers plus social workers, home aid workers and even home meal delivery drivers to identify those in need of services, she said.

Dutchtown Middle School students have a bigger and better way to learn, thanks to a generous donation from two corporations that recently picked Ascension Parish to nationally debut their latest advancement in interactive classroom technology. Promethean and AXI Education Solutions presented the brand-new, 102-inch Promethean ActivWall technology board with ClassFlow Connect software Nov. 17 during an eighthgrade math class at Dutchtown Middle. Although the Lafayette Parish school system recently received similar technology at its district training center, Dutchtown Middle is the first in the country to have the Promethean ActivWall with ClassFlow Connect installed in a classroom, said Suzy Swindle,

Gonzales celebrating with tree lighting, parade Advocate staff report Gonzales city officials will kick off the holiday season at 6 p.m. Tuesday with the annual Gonzales Christmas Tree Lighting event in front of City Hall and at the Gonzales Civic Center. Mayor Barney Arceneaux and other city officials will turn on the lights around City Hall, Jambalaya Park and the civic center before heading over to

the civic center for a visit with Santa and entertainment. Santa and his elves will be inside the civic center giving a gift to each child visiting. On stage, performers with Center Stage Performing Arts Academy will entertain the crowd and several Girl Scout troops from across Ascension Parish will be singing Christmas carols outdoors. Hot chocolate and jambalaya provided by the Jambalaya

Festival Association will be served. “Mayor Barney Arceneaux, the entire City of Gonzales Council, administration and staff look forward to this event annually,” said Public Information Officer Charlotte Guedry. “Seeing the coming together of our area families at one of the most magical times of the year is a joy for us all. No one throws a celebration like the city of Gonzales, and our Christmas

event is no exception. We urge everyone to join us for family, festive fun.” The fun continues on Dec. 13 when the Jambalaya Festival Association hosts the annual Christmas Parade through the streets of Gonzales. Tuesday is the deadline to register for participation in the parade. For information or to register for the parade, email jamfestassociation@gmail.com;

A meal, provided by “Tee” Wayne Abshire, LeBlanc’s Foot Store and Carli-Co Café, will be served to senior citizens. Santa will be there and music will be performed by musicians led by Kenny Fife, Guedry said.

Santa Claus came riding in on a fire truck. The evening closed with a flash-mob dance to “Jingle Bell Rock.” For locals, the Avenue Evening Stroll is a great way to celebrate the town’s history and community spirit. Miss LSU-USA Ashley Barbier, a Donaldsonville native, and Miss Donaldsonville Teen Tamiko Stroud were both there to greet visitors. “We are such a small, closeknit town, but we are able to keep it up. We are a melting pot of cultures here,” Barbier said. “This event is another time of the year for the whole town to come together. It’s time for everybody to get together, eat some Louisiana food, and have some fun,” Stroud said. The city’s history and architecture were on display as folks walked the avenue. “One thing that makes us unique is this is an old city, founded in 1806,” Melancon said. “We look at the modern world, and it’s beautiful, but we forget the beautiful things of our past.” The event was sponsored by the Ascension Parish Tourism Commission, Entergy and Captial One. Supporting partners included the River Road African-American Heritage Museum, CF Industries, and Kenny Frederic at Donaldsonville Glass and Body Works. “Collaboration is important to us,” Melancon said. The goals of the Donaldsonville Downtown Development District’s Mainstreet program are “to promote the unique character of the historic downtown district, to transform the downtown district into a vibrant

Any crisis, the town comes together. Not only do we have charming architecture and culture, but we have simplicity in our lives. My house is

one block away from my mom’s refrigerator. I can walk everywhere from my house and tend to my business without traffic,” Landry said. Jewelry vendor Annie Kalgin, from Missouri, was visiting relatives when she learned about the Avenue Evening Stroll and decided to participate in the event. “It looks like a pretty prosperous little community, where community is important and people care for their little town,” Kalgin said. “Donaldsonville is special because it tries to bring people together,” said local vendor Myrt Acosta, of Creative Imaginations.

The corporations selected Ascension Parish for the ActivWall’s national debut because of the district’s thriving “robust technology ecosystem,” said Swindle. “They came right off the assembly line and straight to Ascension Parish,” she said. Three ActivWall technology boards were installed in Dutchtown Middle School classrooms and a fourth in the school’s library, said Ascension Parish schools spokeswoman Jackie Tisdell. Four more ActivWall technology boards are set to be installed at Lake Elementary School in St. Amant over the Thanksgiving holiday and two more at the district’s technology training center, Tisdell said. The 10 technology boards are a donation valued at $70,000, Tisdell said. “Obviously, we were very excited,” said Dutchtown Principal Doug Walker. “Our teachers have really embraced technology. The Promethean ActivWall technology board utilizes mobile devices already provided to students by the school system to send and share school assignments and lessons. Although Ascension Parish students currently use older Promethean boards in the classroom, the Promethean ActivWall technology board allows multiple students to send information to the board instead of just one student at a time. The technology board can also launch a whiteboard feature for writing and brainstorming, digitally capture and save work, browse the Internet and mirror and view content from the student’s mobile devices. Student Peyton Hoyle then used his finger to draw on the ActivWall as if it were a whiteboard to help explain the problem to the class. After the lesson, student Caleb Ghere said the ActivWall helped him because he could see how other groups had come up with the answer. And the ActivWall’s sheer size impressed him as well. “The main thing was just how big it was,” said Ghere. “It was so clear watching everything. Corporation executives also attended the unveiling at the school. “These kids are digital,” said AXI Education Solutions President Dale Viola. “They grow up with high definition, they grow up with video, they grow up with media, they grow up with touching. Returning and new members of the 2015-16 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council took their oaths of office during the Aug. 11 City Council meeting. END ROAD OF THE

Both parish teams end seasons in second round of playoffs The St. Amant Gators left too many opportunities on the field and gave up too many big plays as the Hahnville Tigers came roaring back in the second half to overpower the Gators 55-33. The Gators took the opening kickoff and was forced to punt. Hahnville took over at its own 47 and the Tigers hit on a 53-yard pass from quarterback Mike Neal to receiver Devonte Cravin for the first of four big plays on the night for a 7-0 lead. On the Gators’ next possession, they took over on the 50-yard line and drove to Hahnville’s 13-yard line. Hayden Mallory was picked off on the 2-yard line for one of the missed

opportunities of the night. The defense held, making the Tiger punter rush, which resulted in a short punt and the Gators took over on the Hahnville 38. The offense moved the ball in the red zone to the 17 and settled for a field goal for a 7-3 score. The Tigers returned the kickoff to the Gator 10, but the defense held and ASCENSION got the ball back on ATHLETICS downs. The Gators took over on their 20 and took the ball on an 80-yard drive that resulted in a 3-yard touchdown pass and a 10-7 lead. Nose tackle Anthony Wilson intercepted a screen pass at the Hahnville 12, returned it to the 5-yard line. St. Amant led 17-7 after Mark

Lyle Johnson

Darby’s 1-yard scoring run with 9:27 left in the second quarter. The Tigers followed with an 80yard drive of their own and pulled the score to 17-14. St. Amant answered with a 78-yard touchdown drive that ended with an 8-yard TD pass from Hayden Mallory to Briggs Bourgeois for a 24-14 lead. An errant option pitch by Hahnville created a fumble, and St. Amant recovered the ball at the Tiger 18. The Gators couldn’t move the ball and settled for a Bourgeois field goal from 35 yards with 55 seconds left in the half that upped the lead to 27-14. Hahnville took possession at their 27-yard line and drove the distance with less than a minute on the clock that culminated with a wild 25yard TD reception as time ran out. The score was 27-21 at the half. The Tigers blistered the Gators as

St. Amant gave up two more big plays and couldn’t quite get the offense clicking and only managed two field goals, one in the third quarter and one in the fourth quarter. Mallory passed for 286

yards, but it wasn’t quite enough. Bourgeois kicked field goals of 33, 35, 42 and 38 yards without a miss. The Gators finish the season 9-3 and made it to the second round of the playoffs for the first time — a great season to be sure.

The Zachary Broncos’ quarterback Lindsey Scott turned out to be a little more than the Griffin defense could stop as they lost their second round playoff game 35-14 at Griffin Field on Friday night. Scott rushed for 176 yards and scored four of the five Bronco touchdowns. The Zachary defense did its job well as they held the Griffins scoreless in the first half as they managed only 29 yards of total offense. The Broncos offense moved the ball steadily on the ground and the half ended with Zachary leading 21-0. The Griffins did manage to get some spark out of the offense in the second half as their senior quarterback Jared Sparks hit his favorite receiver, Aver’ee York, for two TDs. This very familiar combo hooked up on a pair of second-half touchdown passes of 41 and 63 yards. It was just too little, too late for Dutchtown to make a comeback as they only managed 34 rushing yards and 230 total yards. It was a great season for the

Volleyball All-Star game goes down to the wire BY LYLE JOHNSON

Special to The Advocate The competition was hot at the annual Louisiana High School Coaches Association East-West All-Star match. Both teams played their hearts out and didn’t leave anything on the court. That hustle and high competition forced the game to go five sets, but the East team came away with the 25-20, 25-11, 21-25, 23-25, 15-9 victory on Saturday at Newman High School. The St. Amant Gators were represented by Kourtney Gremillion; and the West’s roster featured Kaitlyn Gertz (Sulphur), Ali Mitchell (Episcopal), Anne Faulk (Notre Dame), Morgan Vincent (St. Thomas More), Chaney Siebarth (Barbe), Mary Franques (Ascension Episcopal), Grace Morgan (Notre Dame), Beth-

any Bergeron (Westlake), Tayra Kanou (Rayne), Jariel Tureaud (Lutcher), Sarah Pierre (Episcopal Acadiana), Madelyn Aucoin (St. Thomas More) and Destiny Ephrome (University High). The East squad looked like they might run away with things as they went up 2-0 in the match. But the West squad dug down deep, turned things around and fought their way back into the match. The West took the third set in a hardfought match, winning 25-21. They fought an even tougher match in game 4 overcoming a comeback attempt by the East squad for a 25-23 win and force a fifth set. But the East got back on track in the fifth set and polAdvocate file photo by HEATHER MCCLELLAND ished the West off with a 15-9 victory. Short trip down the bayou produces a bounty BY LYLE JOHNSON

Special to The Advocate

Late fall and early winter is really prime time for taking part in the outdoors. The speckled trout are coming in to the marsh, hunting season is in full swing and life is just good in south Louisiana. But this time of the year is a favorite for heading down to Delacroix for some bank fishing. The ride is not bad, although it’s about an hour and a half to travel. But it’s an overall easy trip. You don’t have to worry about carrying a boat with you, and it’s just a relaxing time. Last weekend, I was joined by my brother, Alan, on a trip down to St. Bernard Parish, with our final destination as the small community of Reggio. We had two quests in our plan. One was some early morning bass fishing, and the other was catching enough crabs for a boil when we returned home. The bass-catching was somewhat successful. as we landed four of those fat, chunky bass.

Advocate photo by LYLE JOHNSON

Some of south Louisiana’s bayou bounty just before a bath in crab boil. Two of the fish came on a spinner bait and the other two were caught on plastic worms. After an hour or so, we swapped the bass rods out for three others with chicken necks for bait. Just like usual, the crabs cooperated, and we filled half an ice chest with 51 big, beautiful crabs. We packed the truck up and headed back to Ascension with a few fish, a respectable load of crabs and the memory of a relaxing time spent with a brother. It just doesn’t get any better than that.
