Louisiana leaders react to U.S. military operation Johnson calls it ‘justified’; Carter says it’s ‘reckless’ BY MATTHEW ALBRIGHT and CLAIRE GRUNEWALD Staff writers

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson on Saturday called the U.S. military operation to capture Venezuela’s president “a decisive and justified operation that will protect American lives.” “Nicolas Maduro is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans after years of trafficking illegal drugs and violent cartel members into our country — crimes for which he’s been properly indicted in U.S. courts and an arrest warrant duly issued — and today he learned

what accountability looks like,” Johnson, a Republican from the Shreveport area, said in a statement. But U.S. Rep. Troy Carter, D-New Orleans, said the attack was “reckless” and unconstitutional, since it was carried out without Congressional approval. “Congress cannot stay silent while this president ignores the rule of law,” Carter said in a statement. President Donald Trump ordered the operation to capture Maduro within Venezuelan territory. Multiple explosions rang out and low-flying aircraft swept through the Venezuelan capital. Maduro’s government accused the United States of attacking civilian and military installations, calling it an “imperialist attack” and urging citizens to take to the streets.

CARACAS, Venezuela — Hours after an audacious military operation that plucked leader Nicolás Maduro from power and removed him from the country, President Donald Trump said Saturday that the United States would run Venezuela at least temporarily and tap its vast oil reserves to sell to other nations. The dramatic action capped an intensive Trump administration pressure campaign on the South American nation and its autocratic leader and months of secret planning resulting in the most assertive American action to achieve regime change since the 2003 inINSIDE vasion of Iraq. A person in custody was escorted off the jet, gingerly making his way down a stairway before being led across the tarmac surrounded by federal agents. Several agents appeared to film the person on their phones. The legal authority for the incursion, done without congressional approval, was not immediately clear, but the Trump administration promoted the ouster as a step toward reducing the flow of dangerous drugs into the U.S. The president touted what he saw as other potential benefits, including a leadership stake in the country and greater control of oil.

Family reflects on Tiger Bech’s legacy a year after Bourbon attack BY MIKE COPPAGE Contributing writer

Michelle Bech cries daily. Her whole family does. The emotions attached to the tears of Bech, whose son Tiger was killed along with 14 others in a terror attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day 2025, vary from gratitude to anger. Gratitude that hours before his death, Tiger professed his faith in God — out of the blue — while in the car with his parents and pal Ryan Quigley, who was injured in the attack.

“Tiger always struggled intellectually with believing in God,” Michelle Bech said. “He and Lance Strother (St. Thomas More receivers coach and director of campus ministry) would have these debates. “On New Year’s Eve, we were pulling into New Orleans with Tiger and Ryan — who were leaving the next day to go back to New York — sitting in the back seat.” When Tiger announced, “Hey Mom and Dad, I do believe in God,” Michelle Bech said she and husband Marty were thrilled. “We looked at each other but

didn’t say anything because he might retract it,” Michelle Bech said. “What are the chances that on the one night where he verbally acknowledged that he believed in God, that Tiger would die?” There have been other signs that God was ready to call Tiger home, according to Michelle Bech. Weeks after Tiger Bech’s death, younger brother Jack was named MVP of the Senior Bowl after catching the winning pass with seven seconds left while wearing Tiger’s jersey No. 7. When Michelle Bech’s daughter Sophie looked into the Ala-

bama sky, she noticed five clouds stretching across the horizon that collectively formed the word, “Tiger.” “It’s incredible,” Michelle Bech said. “It’s like Tiger wrote his name in the sky.” Tiger Bech lived his life with a zeal like few others. During his brokerage firm’s Christmas bonus meeting, Tiger Bech leaped out of his chair and hugged his employers upon hearing the announcement. “They had never had anyone hug
