Helping continue to welcome the new school year in Ascension Parish, the VFW Post 3693 hosted its first Red, White & Youth School Kickoff on Saturday in Gonzales.

The family-friendly event featured children’s activities along with information about various organizations and scholarship opportunities available to students.

“This was an event the auxiliary decided to take on,” Nolen said.

“We wanted an event that supports and promotes back-to-school. “It’s our first year hosting it so hopefully it will continue to grow.”

Many organizations used the opportunity to introduce themselves while promoting upcoming events.

Books for Boots, the nonprofit organization that provides free books to military members, gave children free books.

Singletary said the organization, which has given away thousands of items to the military, is growing at a fast pace.

They also believe in each other and that breeds confidence,” Lee said. Wide receiver Kenzie Littles had two touchdown receptions from QB Skylar Garrison. Quinnton Dabney and Donald Brown continue to shine on offense as well. Lee likes what he sees from his offense.

“Our offensive line has played well; Dabney and Brown have excelled along with Littles. On defense, Decaleb Green has been outstanding so far,” Lee said. Green received a scholarship offer from South Alabama last weekend. The defensive end/ outside linebacker has had a strong start to the season. Alliance kicks off campaign to fund a cat rescue

Community news report

Work has begun to raise the money needed to open a cat rescue center in Gonzales.

Rescue Alliance is launching a campaign to open the Cat Rescue Center of Gonzales, turning a longtime dream into reality

For years, Rescue Alliance has been a lifeline for abandoned, at-risk and homeless cats. Since 2019, the rescue has saved and adopted out more than 3,000 cats and kittens through its fosterbased network, according to a news release. But the need is

greater than ever, and fosters alone can’t keep up with the growing number of calls for help.

That’s why Rescue Alliance is ready to take the next step: a permanent Cat Rescue Center that will expand its lifesaving impact and serve as a hub of compassion for the entire community

The Cat Rescue Center of Gonzales with adequate sponsors will allow Rescue Alliance to:

n Provide safe shelter for cats in crisis n Host low-cost vaccine and microchip events n Offer spay/neuter clinics to

fight overpopulation

n Run education and outreach programs for responsible pet ownership

n Bring families together through fun, cat-friendly community events.

“Our dream is to create a place where every cat has a chance to heal, grow, and find their forever home,” said Jonathan Henriques, director of Rescue Alliance. “The Cat Rescue Center of Gonzales would change everything — not only for the cats who desperately need us, but also for the people of Gonzales.”

City of Gonzales Mayor Tim Riley voiced his support.

“As the City of Gonzales continues to grow, initiatives such as the Cat Rescue Center are essential to strengthening our community’s foundation of compassion and service,” Riley said. “Rescue Alliance embodies values that define our city responsibility, care and community spirit. Supporting this project is not only an investment in animal welfare, but also in the quality of life and unity of Gonzales as a whole.”

Rescue Alliance is calling on the community to rally behind
