The Planning and Zoning Commission also voted to recommend that the City Council approve a special-use permit request by Ora Jones to open Rosemond School of Phlebotomy at 1425 S. Purpera. At an earlier meeting, Jones told the commission she plans to have nine students when the school first opens, tentatively in December, training them to draw blood from patients for medical testing.

Mardi Gras madness at Ascension library

Teens can celebrate Carnival in style at Ascension Parish Library with a Mardi Gras Madness program. Teens can listen to classic Mardi Gras music as they craft an attention-grabbing mask. Earn beads by answering trivia about the holiday and decorate a mini-king cake. The program is set for 4 p.m. Feb. 11 at the library’s Gonzales branch, 4 p.m. Feb. 12 in Dutchtown, 4 p.m. Feb. 13 in Donaldsonville and at 11 a.m. Feb. 14 in Galvez. Mardi Gras Madness is limited to teens in sixth grade and older. Road closure announced

Pearly Broussard Road has been closed at its intersection with La. 73, Parish President Tommy Martinez said. Through traffic on La. 73 will not be impeded by the closure, he said. Aaron Elisar, project engineer with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, said the closure is part of safety improvements for the La. 73 road widening project underway. Elisar said crews are replacing existing roadway surfacing and base course at that location. Pearly Broussard Road will remain accessible at its southeastern end with Post Office Road, Elisar said.

Council on Aging Senior Center addition underway BY CHRISTINE MORGAN

cmarceneaux@theadvocate.com GONZALES — Seniors at the Ascension Parish Council on Aging will have more room to play games, exercise, learn and attend large gatherings once a two-room addition is complete. The 1,000-square-foot addition to the Council on Aging’s Gonzales Senior Center, 526 S. Irma Blvd., is about “halfway

there,� COA Director Darlene Schexnayder said of the center’s expansion and extensive remodel. The addition includes a multipurpose area, complete with a pool table, and new office space. “The building (of the addition) has been framed,� Schexnayder said. The drywall will be installed, and the doors will be delivered soon, she added.

While waiting on the addition to take shape, the existing building is getting a muchneeded face-lift while maintaining the aesthetics of the original building, minus the 1970s bathroom, Schexnayder said, laughing. The bathroom will be remodeled. Crews are painting the existing facility and choosing new
