The History of our Company Cape Romain Contractors specializes in marine construction and heavy highway bridge services. We have 72 years of history providing these services to government and public clients including the South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia DOTS, the US Army Corp of Engineers, the US Navy, the US Coast Guard, and South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia Ports Authorities, Water Authorities, County Administrations, and many private owners and associations.

In 1946, Andrew "Binks" DuPre and his brother James H. DuPre founded Cape Romain to provide complete biological, topographical, and ecological services in the development of fish and duck ponds and in the promotion of conservation practices with all kinds of wildlife.

Andrew had been the longtime manager of the Cape Romain and Bulls Island National Wildlife Refuges, and James was a Citadel graduate in Civil Engineering. The company was believed to be the first of its kind in the nation.

As Cape Romain Contractors succeeded in the coming decades, it gradually shifted more toward construction than ecology.

Binks DuPre passed in 1979, and his son Anthony "Tin" DuPre, who had grown up in the business, took over the helm of the company.

Tin DuPre took an already reputable company and expanded it further, earning it a reputation as an honest, hard-working, and dependable organization.

Anthony "Sonny" DuPre Jr. became president in 2002 and served in that position until 2015. His brother Andrew G. DuPre became president in 2015. Sonny retired in 2017. Horry Parker, Clifton Hough, and Eric Greg Tuttle are vice presidents and together with Andrew - have more than 80 years of marine and heavy highway construction experience.

Cape Romain Contractors still maintains the honorable reputation that was forged by its founders. They have never failed to deliver on a contract.

Please consume plenty of water and throw-in the occasional Gatorade/Powerade as a supplement. Rule of thumb is to drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water to stay hydrated.

How well do you know ‌ Jimmy Bragg Compiled by Shannon Brigham

Jimmy Bragg was hired by Cape Romain Contractors, Inc. on Oct. 17, 1995. He has experience operating heavy equipment, concrete construction, carpentry and mechanical skills. He is CCO certified in Lattice Boom Crawler and Large Telescopic Cranes. He also holds a certification for teaching rigging and inspection. Jimmy and his family live on 33 acres in Cottageville.

What are your favorite hobbies?

Hunting off horseback, fishing and teaching my girls new things.

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?

Anywhere on the Edisto River What is your favorite TV show, movie or book?

Swamp People, Wicked Tuna, Outer Banks, Hatfields and McCoys What is the best part about working at Cape Romain?

We have challenging jobs in different areas, and I like the family atmosphere of the company.

Where are you from originally?

Serven County, Georgia What is something that people may be surprised to know about you?

My great, great Grandfather Bragg (Jasper Bragg) was first sergeant Georgia Militia Civil War. All nine brothers were CSA. He and eight of his brothers were in the Civil War under Georgia militia.

Who are your heros?

My dad, granddaddy Bragg, Robert E. Lee and Jesus Christ What has been your favorite project at Cape Romain Contractors?

There's been a few favorites, but I guess I'll pick the Apache Pier with my dad. I was in high school working the summer on the pier with dad and his crew. I guess it's the best because besides my dad teaching me around the house the skills to build anything; I learned how to carve with a chainsaw, cut boards, drill holes and - best of all - catch sharks with a crane. That's really where I was broken in at the Cape.

Jimmy and Keri Bragg have two daughters Savannah, 4, and Sadie, 2.

They reside in Cottageville.

Current Projects

Hugh Leatherman Terminal

Cape Romain Contractors entered into a Joint Venture with McLean Contracting Company headquartered in Glen Burnie, MD, to construct The South Carolina State Ports Authority’s Hugh K. Leatherman Sr. Wharf facility in North Charleston, SC. The first section of wharf is 1,400 feet long by 122 feet wide and was designed to support the modern port cranes that SCSPA purchased to offload the much larger "PostPanamax" ships that now traverse the widened Panama Canal. The project will begin with dredging operations in the Cooper River, followed by pile driving, and then erection of the precast concrete pile cap and deck system. Toward the end of the project, crane rails and fixtures, fenders will be installed to prepare the wharf to receive the new cranes in the Spring of 2020.Superintendent: Jimmy Yergin

Cassique Phase 7 Bulkheads

Kiawah Development Partners require erosion and scour control structures as part of Cassique Phase 7 development. Cape Romain is currently constructing three timber bulkheads. The separate three timber bulkheads total approximately 500 linear feet to protect several lots along a tributary of the Kiawah River. The timber bulkheads consist of 35-foot-long timber pile, 20-foot- long tongue and groove timber pile sheets and a concrete deadman tie back system. Superintendent: Tony Ranchich

Guggenheim Park

Guggenheim Park is located between Island Park Drive and Seven Farms Drive on Daniel Island, SC. The north end of the pond will be completely redeveloped with a pile-supported platform for social events and daily activities open to the general public. The area will be completely re-landscaped with a variety of plants and trees to truly enhance this area. The pile-supported platform will have tables and chairs for use at any time. Table, chairs and planters will be installed and furnished by the owner for daily use and for evening activities. Superintendent: John Kitchener

Port Access Road

Gerald Gable and Robert “Catfish” Poplin are now re-mobilized to the site of this two bridge project, after a hiatus of five months while the prime contractor and the owner hash out right-of-way issues. Two spans of trestle are now installed and work is resuming on Segment I and the caps at Bents No.22 and No.23. Other members of our team include Gene Wilburn, Charles Shay, Francisco Resendiz, Robert Poplin Jr., Benito Martinez, Ken McPherson, Christian Sampsel, Nathanial Johnson, Charles Nelson and Gary Tubbs. Paul & Dalton

Paul & Dalton Plantation experienced breaches in the wetland impoundment embankments due to the effects of Hurricane Irma in October of 2017. Cape Romain was contracted to install steel sheet piling in the breaches to stop the tidal flow of water within the impoundment. Superintendent: Jimmy Bragg

Collins and Mill Creek Bridges Replacement

Matt Lines and crew have now finished all construction at Mill Creek and recently moved back to Mill Creek and have completed the removal of the existing box culvert, driven all remaining piling, completed all caps and are now installing the flat slab form system for placing the deck concrete. As usual Matt Lines and Crew: Robert Tarascio, Ronnie Czurak, Lloyd Williamson, Rick Weeter and our newest addition to this team is Jordan McKinney are approaching the end of a very difficult project. Thanks for the help, for a few months, from Catfish and his crew, Chuck Shay, Robbie Poplin. The end is finally within sight. Hurry guys we have another project waiting for you. Yeamans Hall

Cape Romain Contractors will remove approximately 250 linear feet of timber bulkhead and replace with articulated concrete mats (approximately 10,000 square feet) and an MSE wall. All access is by water. Superintendent: Roger Martens

Completed Projects

Beaufort County Waterfront Relieving Project

by Greg Tuttle, Vice President Doug, Justin, Brandon, Curtis, and Simon did a great job on this project. All of the 14 pile jackets were poured with epoxy. The extra help on pump days was greatly appreciated. The crew overcame a fast current and no visibility and were able to top out the jackets two weeks ahead of schedule. We have two new divers: Phil Millimaki and Stephen Thomas. Both are working hard and enjoying the pirate life in downtown Beaufort at the boardwalk. The divers demobilized June 22 and headed to the Beaufort County Fishing Pier where SC170 crosses the Broad River.

Anderson Under Bridge

by Andrew DuPre, President The Anderson Under Bridge project mobilized on June 5, 2018 and was completed Aug. 10, 2018. This project now serves as a testing platform for Anderson Hyrda Platforms™ Inspectabrige suspended work platforms. The 120 foot long by 28 foot wide structure consists of a pre-fabricated steel superstructure bearing on a combination of 18 inch and 24 inch steel pipe piles. Superintendent: Jimmy Yergin

Citadel Marina

by Andrew DuPre, President This project consisted of redeveloping the Citadel’s Boating Center. Shoreline improvements were performed that involved refurbishing roughly 290 linear feet of riprap revetment and 222 feet of existing timber bulkhead removed and replaced. The existing timber fixed dock was removed and replaced with a new floating dock facility that is ADA compliant. The new floating docks is aluminum framed with IPE decking and guided with 14 inch x ½ inch coated steel pipe pile.

The existing concrete boat ramp was removed and replaced with a 12-foot-wide and 20-foot-long concrete boat ramp. The facility now has new electric and water utilities serving the floating docks. Superintendent: Tony Ranchich

Completed Projects

Boyd Island Bridge by

Boyd Island Bridge was a design build project for The River Alliance in Columbia, SC. The bridge crosses a branch of the Saluda River and connects a river walkway to Boyd Island, which is being developed as an extension of the public walkway.

The bridge is a 105-foot-span steel prefabricated bridge. The foundations are raised piers on a large spread footing anchored to the existing rock substructure.

This project was completed in July 2018. You can see video of this project on our Facebook page. Superintendent: John Kitchener

Wando Welch Terminal

by Greg Tuttle, Vice President The South Carolina State Ports Authority contracted with Cape Romain to repair and upgrade the Wando Whelch Wharf facility in Mount Pleasant, SC. The wharf is 3,800 feet long by 143 feet wide and was upgraded to handle the new larger cranes that SCSPA purchased to offload the much larger "PostPanamax" ships that now traverse the widened Panama Canal. A 16-foot-wide trough was demolished at each crane rail to allow 24-inch and 18-inch prestressed piles to be added directly below the stronger cap beams and new rails that the cranes now roll on. The trough and caps were stiffened with abundant additional reinforcing steel to disperse the heavier loads. New heavy fenders and bollards were also part of the upgrades. Jordan was born and raised in the Lowcountry. After graduating from Wando High School, he studied Civil Engineering at Clemson University then immediately commissioned as an Engineer Officer in the United States Army in 2011. For the next seven years, Jordan served in a variety of assignments ranging from combat engineer platoon leader to vertical construction project engineer and even a brief stint as a human resources officer. His military career took him all over the country and around the world to include two overseas tours. While in the Army, he finished his master’s degree in civil engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology and became a licensed Professional Engineer in 2016. At the completion of his service obligation, Jordan decided to leave active duty and return home to Charleston, SC, and pursue a civilian career in the construction industry.

Jordan and his wife Amanda have two children, Eliza and Carter. They are excited to live in their hometown again and join the Cape Romain Contractors team.
