Revamped clinic open its doors The City of Cape Town has invested just over R1 million for a makeover of the Hanover Park Clinic. The funding for the project was made available through the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Project. The Hanover Park Clinic was closed for three months while extensive renovations were completed to the tune of more than R1 million. The facility closed its doors earlier this year for a number of upgrades aimed at further improving service delivery to clients, one of the key priorities in the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan.

Other features include a new dispensary, emergency treatment room, canteen area for staff, and universal access ramps for people with disabilities, as well as an upgrade to electrical components and lighting, the installation of air-conditioning, and a fresh coat of paint. The renovations come on the back of security hardening measures installed in the previous year, following an upsurge in gang violence in Hanover Park.

Often besieged by people knocking on her door for bread or something to eat, seeing the need and pain in their eyes, Nuraan Kalam in Silvertown decided to make a difference in a meaningful way. Operating her now structured non-profit organisation from her humble home situated in a high volume traffic neighbourhood, Nuraan assist single mothers and children neglected by their parents.

Believing in doing something rather than talking, a modest Nuraan said, “women who come here are single mothers who have been abuse, some have drug related problems or nowhere to stay, and I am able to make available shelter for about two days or so. Whilst over staying I would provide counselling with expectancy the person will make a turnaround in her life. It’s not easy.”

Face by the tough economic pinch, Nuraan encounter challenges to maintain support for those reliant on her. “I don’t want money, but donations like cheese, bread,

cereal plus second hand clothing are welcome,” added Nuraan.

Her deep love for children is often tested when people arrived having lost their wendy house because of a fire, with the children bearing the brunt of this calamity. On a monthly basis, weather permitting, Nuraan and her support team take children from the surrounding streets to a park to play and give them sweets and chips. The Green Doors For Child Protection Programme offers this intervention to prepare children for positive, productive futures. On a daily basis from her home fourteen women are busy with beading and needlework which they exhibit once per month to generate income.

Determine to effect change, Nuraan said, “It’s unnecessary for children to run around aimlessly, women disregarded by the community, because if we all pull together, the entire community benefits.” Project Director Mrs. Nuraan Kalam can be contacted at 079 368 4292.

In a class of her own As project coordinator Carol van Wyk of She- Chem in Hanover Park keeps on raising the bar in trying to make better communities. Since 2000 she has been part of this initiative reaching specifically out to children of the entire area and even beyond its borders. Question on her motivation for doing this, Carol said, “I learned something really early from my family: Even the biggest challenges are less terrifying when you tackle them as a community, and the only way to make tangible effect, one needs to work with the whole community.”

Together with her management committee, who provide strategic direction and dedicated community volunteers they have impacted numerous young boys and girls.

The name She- Chem, a Jewish word meaning shoulder for weary, do exactly that by offering young girls a helping hand towards developing a sense of self- esteem and self-belief.

In an area such as this, girls are often vulnerable and under pressure from their peers. Although limited support, every year selected girls are taken on camps to cultivate self-identity and to nurture leadership skills.

Similarly, for boys, a structure is in place refer to as Boys to Real Men. Although struggling to entice decent funding, the support from ward councillor Antonio van der Rheede cannot be underrated, as he plays a pivotal role in ensuring these programmes continue. The organisation has been able to forge partnerships with WheatTrust, Rape Crisis, PRASA, WOW, Woman’s Net plus a number of local churches.

The organisation goes further than its initial scope of work by running once per month a soup kitchen during cold months and food kitchen in summer.

Undeterred by the challenges, Carol is planning on a number of progressive

events between now and year end to counter negative attractions. “If you look at our success rate since inception, you will see in particularly how many young girls have gone on to make something of their lives, I hope to invite them to give their testimonies sometime soon to other girls, that will be so awesome,” she exclaimed. To this she added her philosophy on life: “Keep smiling no matter how tough it gets. Work hard.

Love people. Love family. And keep busy and give. Give all you can.”

Transforming Heideveld Through Neighbourhood Watch

The ACDP leadership group Penelope Arendse, Deborah Abrahams, Margaret Abels, Surita Ernstzen and Shirley van Rheede with WC leader Ferlon Christians.

“The safety of Heideveld residents, businesses and buildings like libraries and schools is at the top of our list of priorities,” said assistant coordinator Mugidien Barnes along with dozens of volunteers and residents who are working to strategically prevent crime and address other safety needs of their community. Together with the Community Police Forum (CPF), UCT Law Faculty and City of Cape Town, these groups and individuals are tackling the top safety issues in Heideveld, which include addressing alcohol and substance abuse, decreasing the number of

youth and adults which have gang involvement, and encouraging the community’s involvement in efforts to prevent crime.

And as often the case, women are spearheading the initiatives to ensure learners safety both in the mornings and after school.

Going the extra mile has seen members of the Heideveld Neighbourhood Watch earn significant respect both for the individual and organisation.

One of the oldest members, Aunty Latiefa, said, “The safety of our community is all of our responsibility.” The neighbourhood watch who do not use force or violent

intervention have adopted a value driven system instead of a rule driven system, which have seen them garner meaningful successes. Together, we have made tremendous strides over the past 5 years, and by continuing to make safety a top priority, we are creating one of the most desirable places to live, work and raise a family in Heideveld, said Mugidien. Coke Cup: Seymore goals sees Palace reach last 8

Nantes AC running for youth

Nantes Athletics club will be going the extra mile to raise funds for their club’s juniors and senior youth by competing in Sanlam marathon and 10km Peace run which takes place in September. The Bridgetown club is a hive of activity after officially launching their “Dash for Cash” fund raising campaign at the club women’s day breakfast recently. The campaign sees the participating runners of the club seeking sponsorships of R20 for every kilometer they complete during the two distances on offer.

“We aiming to raise R30 000 with the campaign so we can equip the youngsters with the necessary coaching and life skills to succeed on and off the track” said Fadia Roberts the Marketing executive at Nantes. The club is confident in reaching the target set out but would welcome support from public if Declan Pietersen of Macassar is brought down by Imaad they wish to sponsor a runner. This year’s dates are Tuesday 5th September, Wednesday 6th September & Friday 8th September, commencing at 17h00 to 20h00.On Saturday 9th September, matches commence at 10h00 to 13h00.
