Pastor Norman one step closer to dream W

ith great excitement and enthusiasm, a new organisation R-City Cape Town was launched at the Beautiful Exchange Church Complex, Honeysuckle road, Bonteheuwel on January 5. Pastor Norman Jacobs together with his dedicated team have long harbor dreams of opening a centre to help transform the youth. Over the past few years youth have far too often been on the wrong side of the law.

The centre was make possible through a partnership with its sister organisation R-City Belfast, Northern Ireland. Pastor Norman said he had been approached by the Belfast team as he been involved with gang peace talks before. The acronym, R-City, stands for Communities Integrating Through Youth. “Youngsters grow up here (Bonteheuwel) thinks children who live in another pocket of the neighbourhood are their enemies, and I want to change that mindset. More often than not they don’t even know why they enemies, but that is what happened generations before them and it just passed on. Apart from local integration, we are looking at crosscultural integration where we don’t see race or class. We are busy forming bonds with the Langa community. Now our children realise that we not that different after all,” said Pastor Jacobs. Additional

plans include after school programmes running at the church, where children will be assisted with their homework, get something to eat couple with fun activities.

Furthermore, various skills training will be

offered, ideas on creating businesses be presented, and finally turning Bonteheuwel into a serious tourist destination are in the pipeline to fully convert this community and its residents. “Our vision is massive,

MAYOR ROLLS OUT CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGN ACROSS THE CITY

The increase in illegal dumping has prompted Cape Town’s executive mayor, Dan Plato, to roll out a cleaning exercise across the Metro.

She said the fact that Plato had joined the cleaning exercise showed that he was the “people’s” mayor.

On Saturday, 12 January, Plato launched the cleaning exercise’s pilot phase in ward 26 (Elsies River area).

Shoulder to shoulder with the Ward’s councilor, Franchesca Walker, Plato with a team of about 100 officials from the City’s solid waste department, were joined by residents who together cleaned-up 20 of the hotspots used for illegal dumping in the Elsies River area, which falls under sub council 4.

“We want to encourage the public to not throw refuse on vacant land because it is not

good for the environment. It gives our City an ugly face. We want to encourage communities to work with us to make sure that the suburbs are as clean as possible.

We also want to encourage councilors, to inspire residents, so that our suburbs remain as clean as possible. There is no reason why cleanliness cannot be achieved in poorer areas,” said Plato.

His aim, he said, was to take the cleaning exercise to all corners of the City.

He explained that the cleaning costs the City a lot of money, and gave as an example, the fact that it would cost up to R100, 000.00 per day for one cleaning exercise, which excluded salaries for council employees working on weekends. While the pilot phase was carried

“The illegal dumping is a hotbed for flies and rats. Flies are all over my flat.

I applaud the mayor for the cleaning exercise.

It is a good thing. We have an engaging mayor,” said Sauls.

STARTING A NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION? It is good to see several non-profit initiatives taking place in communities.

In my experience, many non-profit organisations (“NPOs”) generally struggle to raise money to fund their projects.

So how can your NPO improve its chance at obtaining funding?

Remember, funding from a few individuals may not be enough, hence the need to approach bigger funders, who follow evaluation processes to ensure that their donations are made to the best NPO. Start by making sure that your constitution contains all the required information. Your funders – which may be government or private – would want to read through it to see what your NPO is about. A specimen constitution can be accessed online at the following address: https://www. westerncape.gov.za/other/2006/2/npo_constitution.pdf When selecting office-bearers or directors for the NPO, ensure that it is not all immediate family members. This usually creates suspicion with funders. Recruit knowledgeable and driven members to be part of the leadership. They should have the passion and the time to play their part in the NPO. Thirdly, formally register the NPO through the provincial Department of Social Development. This registration form can be accessed online at the following address: http://www.dsd.gov.za/services/downloads/ npo_application_form.pdf Once the registration is approved by the Department, immediately apply for an income tax number and public benefit organisation (“PBO”) number at the South African Revenue Services. This can be done simultaneously.

The PBO number is specifically important to private funders. It enables them to claim a tax deduction for donations made to organisations with such a number. Private funders would thus be more likely to invest money in your NPO if it produces a PBO certificate.

Lastly, ensure that a proper bookkeeping record is held of all financial transactions of the NPO.

f you did not do well during your matric year, don’t despair, there is a second chance to obtaining your goals by rewriting matric.

The Basic Education Department (DBE) has announced that as from January 2019, supplementary exams will no longer take place in March but rather in June.

This will also give learners the opportunity to rewrite as many subjects as they want as opposed to the former two subjects allowed.

Another major reason for the change is thorough monitoring of the system.

The department noted that on average around 40 000 learners who enrol for supplementary examinations every year do not turn up to write the examinations.

This results in massive wasteful expenditure.

Writing supplementary exams in June also gives learners enough time for revision and learners can make use of the comprehensive support material provided through the Second Chance Matric

• Learners who wrote the NSC the previous year, but did not sit for all six subjects should be able to rewrite the examinations for the outstanding subjects in June.

• Senior Certificate Examination Candidates: Learners registered to write the Senior Certificate examinations in June. Registration for the 2019 exams is already open and will close on 31 January 2019.

Nedbank Cup offers chance for elusive cup glory

The 2018/19 Nedbank Cup round of 32 matches, that will see some of the country’s amateur clubs trying to make a name for themselves against their much-fancied professional opponents, will kick-off on Wednesday evening, January 23, 2019.

The last game of the round of 32 will be played on Tuesday, 29 January 2019.
