IPYG and the communities of Cape Flats celebrate the 3rd Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace On Saturday, May 28th, the South African Branch of the International Peace Youth Group and the community of Manenberg and surrounding communities held a peace walk to celebrate the 3rd Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace. The purpose of the event was to highlight the global peace advocacy movement, the Legislate Peace Campaign, which was recently launched to bring all wars to an end by establishing

To see the champion inside you need to remember, you can do whatever you set your mind to. You must unlock what God destined you to be – and that is a champion. We live in a world that is filled with so many people who feel defeated or fearful. But once you discover the champion in you, it will move you from the dismal to the dynamic and you will be empowered to live life to the fullest. Remember you are champion

Legal clinic offers a helping hand

The UCT Law Clinic was born out of a worldwide student movement for such facilities in the 1970’s, and was particularly relevant at the height of apartheid when the poor and the destitute had even loss of a voice than they do now. Forty years on and now with the full participation of the law faculty and other stakeholders, the clinic not only provides free services to poor communities, it also gives law students practical experience. MALE CIRCUMCISION RAPIDLY GAINING IN POPULARITY Male circumcision is gaining in popularity globally and in South Africa, and is currently one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the world. Rachael Rawlinson, the Prevention Programme Manager at HIV management organisation, CareWorks says the increased interest in male circumcision primarily stems from studies conducted in South Africa, Kenya and Uganda which indicate that male circumcision may reduce the risk of HIV acquisition by up to 60%. It has also been found that circumcision can protect a circumcised man’s female partner from certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs). She says more adult men are also making the cut for aesthetic reasons. “There is a growing body of evidence worldwide which suggests that women prefer to have sex with a circumcised male partner and that they find it unhygienic to be intimate with a man who hasn’t been circumcised. “Many women claim that sex with a circumcised man lasts longer and offers more pleasure. This inevitably puts a lot of pressure on men to undergo the procedure,” says Rawlinson. Fighting Crime – It Begins with me!!

Missing persons: There is no waiting period to

report a person as missing. Time is of the essence so it should be done immediately. As parent/ caregiver you have a responsibility to be aware of the whereabouts of children in your care at all times.

•Ensure that your vehicle is always in running condition with good tyres (including the spare wheel) and has enough fuel for your planned trip.

•Know your destination and the directions to it.

•Be alert if you get lost.

•Always park your car in well-attended parking lots, especially at night.

•NEVER. EVER pick up hitchhikers •Don’t have bags, cellphones, briefcases or other valuables in the open in your car or near a window, place them in the boot of your car.

Since inception Bonteheuwel Walking Ladies have been a beacon of Hope and at the Mother’s Day event it was no different with entertainment, spiritual encouragement and inspiration.

Doing it with their feet

Nine years ago Soraya Salie with Shariefa Lagkar, a friend of her mother, decided to walk the perimeter of Bonteheuwel for a healthier life.

They exchanged smiles and greeted people on their journey, invited them to walk with and today the group Bonteheuwel Walking Ladies (BWL) have 65 members. And so during May, at a Mother’s Day event, the group hosted more

than 500 people, much to the amazement of many organisations, both local and regional and of course partners. The BWL mission was to look past the barriers of religion, culture, age, creed and colour and to build strong relationships with their fellow mothers and sisters of Bonteheuwel.

The theme for this year was “embracing humanity, peace and wellness for the love of our Creator. BWL members were dressed in white and yellow and the venue, Bonteheuwel Civic

City looks to boost Stadium Precinct

The City of Cape Town’s Council, on 26 May 2016, gave its in-principle approval for the granting of long-term rights to use, control and/or manage a large gravel overflow-parking site next to the Cape Town Stadium on Granger Bay Boulevard.

It is expected that the development of this site will be a catalyst for the commercialization of the Stadium Precinct which holds investment- and job creation benefits for the people of Cape Town.

The City also wishes to enhance public use of the space.

It is expected that the development of the site will create a number of construction- and sustainable new jobs, specifically with regard to building cleaning, security and landscaping services.

In addition, an envisaged retail component comprising 3 800 m² in size on the ground floor of the proposed development is expected to create further sustainable work opportunities.

Ronnie Recycler rewards top recycling schools

Step by Step Movement Disturb with the reading abilities of learners, Step by Step, a non-profit organisation, decided to ‘step in’ to engender and improve reading literacy of pupils. When they started there were numerous obstacles they had to overcome. From an initial group of four children, we now have over 100 kids from different schools in Bonteheuwel.

Reading classes are hosted every Monday and Wednesday at Disa Primary School. Leading the way is Ms.Marinda Nel ably supported by seven volunteers and three grandmothers, who make soup if and when enough donations are in abundance. Not one for the cameras, Ms. Nel

said, “it’s only God who made this possible for us to grow into this big reading class, through a lot of prayer and faith was tested in many ways. We still need a lot more help from parents that’s at home to help assist with these kids. Donations will be welcome to help make our organization stand on its feet. We don’t have any books or equipment to run a holiday programme but we trust that organizations out there will help and assist us.” Other accessories like toys and puzzles are necessary tools to run a holiday programme.

It was goals galore as FCG Hotspurs thumped luckless Sunrise Athletico 22 – 0 to ease into the next round.

Fielding an understrength team, South End almost ended up with egg on their faces as they scrape to 1-0 win to enter the next round.

Playing at home is always a huge advantage and so it proved to be as Bluegum United overcome a plucky FC Salvo team 3- 0 to progress.

Rangers hogged the headlines

Surrey Estate base Rangers rugby club winning momentum is continually relentless. After seven rounds, the first team is still unbeaten and looks well place for promotion. Whilst in a few matches they have struggle, the winning mentality instill by coach Ebrahim Moerat seems to have the desired effect. In the same league, Langa occupy 6th position with Hamediehs lying in 11th place.

Although just out of the promotion playoffs, both clubs have fare adequately. In the City league, it’s a topsy turvy affair, with Caledonian Rangers (5), Silvertree Rangers (7), Temperance Cities (9), Progress (10), Watsonia (11) and Perseverance (12) are vying for points to consolidate their league positions. The Ramadaan break could not have come at a better time for Thistle playing in the Southern League they just seem unable to hit their straps as one good performance is follow by two poor actions. Talented young cricket stars are quickly being identified in Khayelithsa schools following the creation of comprehensive cricketing ecosystems by the Gary Kirsten Foundation last year.

Long serving football administrator August Paulse received collector’s items, mementos and souvenirs from current Metropolitan LFA President Shahied George, at his beloved Goulburn Athletic Freedom day football tournament. Not enjoying the best of health, the football family was delighted to pay tribute to an outstanding football official of high integrity and standing.

In a drive to provide gifted individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds with the tools to develop their sporting skills, the Gary Kirsten Foundation initiated the Township Cricket Net Installation project. Learners from Chris Hani Secondary School, Siphamandla Secondary School and Impendulo Primary School are benefitting from the holistic initiative whereby each school received two quality cricket nets, a complete cricket kit as well as a cricket coach trained under the Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy.

To ensure the sustainability of each donation, the Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy trains a coach from the area who is then provided with a position at the school, overseeing all sporting activities, creating a comprehensive sports’ programme and coaching the youngsters. The coaches work closely with both the Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy, as well as Gary Kirsten himself, keeping up-to-date with all elements of the cricketing arena.

“Job creation, skills’ development and general community upliftment are all key to the success of the net installations and we want to continue expanding this programme into as many South African schools as possible,” said Kirsten. (copy submitted)

Stormers end slump

Playing their last Super 18 match before the internationals, the Stormers after an indifferent couple of weeks, finally got back on the winning trail by beating the Cheetahs 31 -24 on Saturday at Newlands. That the Stormers won was down to an interception try scored by Leolin Zas, the Stormers wing, near the start of the second half which stretch their lead by 12 points. Thereafter the Stormers were always in control.

The competition resumes July 2 when the Stormers are way to the Rebels.
