Prominent activist lures young learners to help Since the entrance of Mrs. Lekay as school principal of Bramble Way Primary School, things have never been the same. The June school holidays saw the introduction of an after-school intervention programme largely gear to advance the literacy and reading skills of learners at the school. Realizing very early on she cannot do it alone, she included the surrounding residents to help rebuild the school. Not only did the people respond the learners were ecstatic with the fresh management style of the entire staff compliment. Soon afterwards a prominent community worker listed his availability to assist. He brought with him three grade 11 learners from Arcadia High School. Every day they mentor and nurture learners with homework and reading shortcomings.
One of the learners is 16 year-old Kaylene Prins, who initially only got involve for the school holidays. However, the learners enthusiasm was infectious and soon Kaylene was in for the long haul. She said, “I really enjoy reading myself and helping engender a culture of reading in most of these learners is fulfillment in itself. Plus, I find many learners cannot study at home due to small children or other social factors. Why I also help are because I see so many learners eager to learn and read.” School principal Mrs. Lekay said since the introduction of the after school programme, there have been a noticeable improvement amongst the learners. Besides the homework and reading support, the learners receive a cup of soup and or a sandwich before their classes start.
