In addition to providing high quality instructional spaces, the Wilson Center serves as a laboratory for student learning. CFCC students work alongside professional Broadway crews and musicians, and also provide support to the Center’s marketing, event planning, guest services, and operational staff. CFCC students also have the opportunity to work backstage during Wilson Center performances. They receive invaluable hands-on training in stagecraft, lighting, rigging, and audio engineering.

In partnership with UNCW’s Department of Communication Studies, Department of Public & International Affairs, Graduate School and Career Center, the Wilson Center offers a variety of opportunities for academic credit:

From Our President...

Dear Friends, I am honored to welcome you to the Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College.

If this is your first time visiting the Wilson Center, I have no doubt that you will have an amazing experience! The Wilson Center is quickly becoming a cultural landmark in our community, drawing guests and performers from across the globe. The Center is unique in that, not only does it present highly sought-after Broadway touring productions, concerts, and other performances, it also serves as a laboratory for student learning. CFCC students work on every show and also learn in active studio and instructional spaces.

New initiatives like Broadway for a Better World, a partnership with the Arts Council of Wilmington & New Hanover County, make performing arts more accessible to underserved populations such as

disadvantaged youth in New Hanover and Pender counties.

As you will see in this Season Magazine, we have a wonderful line-up scheduled for 2018-19 including exciting new performances and local favorites as well. My hope for this year is that the Wilson Center will continue serving as a unique cultural resource, and further enrich the lives of our community members and our students.

A Girl Named Eva Evita is a musical that might never have happened.

In 1973, on his way to dinner, Tim Rice chanced to hear the end of a radio program about Eva Perón. He was intrigued because, as a youth, he had been a stamp collector and had been fascinated by her image on Argentine stamps.

Rice had no idea of her significance in the history of Argentina, but he began to research her life. He was introduced to the Argentine director of a television film about Perón, Queen of Hearts, which he watched more than a dozen times.

Rice even traveled to Buenos Aires in order to deepen his research on site. He became so fascinated with the dramatic first lady of Argentina that he named his first daughter Eva Jane.

The Making and Remaking of Pan The character of Peter Pan was first mentioned in a 1902 book by Sir James M. Barrie entitled “The Little White Bird.” In 1904, the character of Peter was perfected and became the lead character in the full length play, “Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.” In 1906, the section of “The Little White Bird” that originated Peter Pan was published separately as a book called “Peter Pan in Kensington Garden.” Then, in 1911, Barrie turned his popular play “Peter Pan” into a novel called “Peter and Wendy.”

Barrie, who was knighted in 1913, never had children of his own, but spent a great deal of time playing with the children of his good friends Sylvia and Arther Llewelyn Davies. He loved to create skits for their entertainment, and these formed the basis for the characters and plots which became the play Peter Pan. Despite the quality of the piece, Barries still had difficulty getting it produced. Unlike today, plays in 1904 typically did not have major scene changes or special effects like flying.

Even with those technical challenges, Peter Pan was a huge success — first in England, then in the United States. Peter Pan has been shown on television, was made into the famous 1953 full-length Disney film, and into three other movies: Peter Pan in 1924; Hook, directed by Stephen Spielberg in 1992; and Peter Pan in 2003.

MICHAEL SAKAMOTO SOIL October 18, Tickets $25 +taxes & Fees Michael Sakamoto is an interdisciplinary artist and scholar active in dance, theatre, performance, media and photography. His solo, ensemble, and visual works have been presented in 14 countries throughout Asia, Europe and North America. Sakamoto’s research and performance interests include contemporary imaginings of the butoh-based “body in crisis,” corporeal and mediated embodiments of self-reflection and social resistance.

Soil is an evening-length, intercultural dance that was co-written and co-choreographed with the performers: Cambodian classical and contemporary dancer Chey Chankethya, Thai traditional and contemporary dancer Waewdao Sirisook, and Vietnamese-American contemporary dancer Nguyen Nguyen. Referencing legacies of political conflict, war, genocide, and environmental destruction, Soil explores crisis in three Southeast Asian cultures and transnational, East-West identity through the dancers’ personal narratives and choreography.

The company actively embraces and commissions the work of contemporary choreographers, tours worldwide, and develops dynamic education and community outreach programming.

The Wilson Center will present three works: Pantheon is a new work from choreographer and dancer Raja Feather Kelly which premiered in September 2017. Kelly describes the work: “This musical-choreographic collaboration transposes the paganism and sacrifice of the Stravinsky/Nijinsky Rite of Spring to the twenty-first-century world of global pop culture, and the inherent sacrifices it demands of its audience.” The two other works that will be presented are Exilic Dances (2017) and Construct (2014) both the work of Company Artistic Director Daniel Charon.

ROSIE HERRERA DANCE THEATRE Make Believe March 13, Tickets $25 +taxes & Fees The Wilson Center is thrilled to present Make Believe, the newest work of choreographer and dancer Rosie Herrera. Make Believe premiered in the summer of 2018 at the American Dance Festival held at Duke University’s Reynolds Industries Theater and is currently on tour.

Rosie Herrera, a brilliant choreographer and creator, has put together a stellar group of performers. Known for its diverse ensemble, company performers come from a range of artistic genres including theater, performance art, opera, and contemporary ballet.

Make Believe is a dance theatre work that uses religious iconography to explore themes of love and romance. It deconstructs what it means to believe in magic and how that bleeds into our constructions of spirituality, as well as our understanding of romance.

BROADWAY FOR A Better World E nriching lives , one show at a time

he Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College and The Arts Council of Wilmington & New Hanover County are pleased to announce the opening of the new grant cycle for the Broadway for a Better World initiative. This program and community partnership — entering its second cycle — has a mission to make performing arts accessible to underserved populations.

“Broadway for a Better World provides a unique opportunity for children and young adults who don’t have access or exposure to the performing arts,” said Jack Fuller, former CEO at GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy and a founding member of the Broadway for a Better World committee. “We believe that experiencing the arts in this way will give kids a broader world view and insight into all the possibilities for their future. Not only will they have exposure to the theater, they will also have the opportunity to be on a college campus and learn about the educational options available to them at Cape Fear Community College,” said Fuller. “We can’t give tickets away, but we can ‘gift’ them away, and through the generosity of this community we can truly help children in need; children that deserve these opportunities.”

This past year, Broadway for a Better World was able to extend grants of over 100 tickets to the following wonderful organizations: Brigade Boys & Girls Club • Domestic Violence Shelter & Services, Inc. • DREAMS of Wilmington Easter Seals • Elderhaus Pace • Family Promise • Open House Youth Shelter – Coastal Horizons

eorgia-born Gladys Knight began singing gospel music at age four at the Mount Mariah Baptist Church and sang as a guest soloist with the Morris Brown College Choir. At seven years-old, she won the grand prize on television’s “Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour,” and the following year, ‘The Pips’ — named in honor of their cousin/ manager James Pip Woods — was formed.

A tireless performer who still wows audiences around the world, Knight is a seven-time Grammy Winner who has recorded more than 38 albums over the years and has enjoyed #1 hits on the Pop, Gospel, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the next year, Gladys Knight & The Pips were inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame. In 1998, she and The Pips were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. She returns to the Port City two years to the day from her first performance at the Wilson Center!

h, what a story. Frankie Valli, who came to fame in 1962 as the lead singer of the Four Seasons, is hotter than ever in the 21st century.

Pat Kusek Q: What encouraged you to purchase your first Opera Box seat at the Center?

A: My husband and I were part of the (Wilson Center’s) Founder’s Circle. When we had the Grand Opening, we were so excited because we got the chance to have our daughter, son-in-law, and grandson join us in the box for that whole evening. (Our grandson) was ten at the time. That night, we got the opportunity to be with him when he wore his first tuxedo, rode in his first limousine, had his first black-tie event, and attended his first symphony. And he’s cute as a bug. When the symphony started, he was sitting in front of us and I could see his little hands tapping on the rail. We were just hooked after that. Absolutely hooked.

Q: What’s it like to be in an Opera Box during a show?

A: The thing that’s so wonderful is the volunteers at the Center. They’re just unbelievable! We’ve gotten to know quite a few of them, since they come back over and over to volunteer. And they’ve gotten to know us; they

greet us when we come in … and they always want to know if we want something to drink. When we have returned for other shows and the same volunteers are there, they have (our drinks) waiting. They anticipate our every need.

Q: Would you recommend purchasing Opera Box seats to friends and family?

A: Absolutely! And we’ve done just that. We’ve given Opera Box seats to close friends for Christmas. I have a friend who was trying to get tickets for the Temptations and the Four Tops, and she said, “All the tickets were sold out except for the opera boxes.” And I said, “You need to bite the bullet and get the opera box. It’s worth it.” So she bought tickets and got to sit in Opera Box F. She came back and said, “Man, I’m never going to do anything but an opera box!”

Celtic Thunder A Fun Mix of Contemporary and Traditional

eltic Thunder is a prolific touring powerhouse, having performed nearly 1,000 shows to date, selling over 1 million show tickets. The group, led by singers Damian McGinty, Ryan Kelly, Michael O’Dwyer, Emmet Cahill, and Neil Byrne, has sold more than 3.4 million albums. In past years, Billboard has awarded Celtic Thunder, “Top World Music Artist,” “Top World Music Imprint,” and “Top World Album.”

“We had a blast making [our new album] Celtic Thunder X. The music choices were carefully selected to suit each member’s

personality and gave us something we could really dig our teeth into. We love singing songs that are a perfect mix of traditional and contemporary Irish songs, along with the fun we have performing hit songs that are known worldwide,” the group commented.

Backed by the Celtic Thunder Band, the group will deliver new ensemble numbers, including some of your contemporary and traditional Irish favorites. They’ll also perform a selection of nostalgic, fun songs and some Celtic Thunder anthems that bring audiences to their feet.

Q: How often do you attend Wilson Center events?

A: I go to shows a dozen times a year, maybe more — especially Broadway plays! I think we’re very fortunate in Wilmington to have this venue. I’ve seen Broadway shows in Pittsburgh and New York, and the quality is the same.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of going to the Wilson Center?

A: Shows aside . . . the parking garage across the street! I park my car and just drive my scooter across the street. It’s a safe environment, a beautiful venue, and the seating is great. There’s not a bad seat in that venue anywhere.

Q: What sort of ADA services or accommodations have you utilized while at the Wilson Center?

A: The elevator, the bathroom, and the seating. I usually sit in the parterre seats.

Q: How would you rate your experience with the Wilson Center’s ADA accommodations?

A: Excellent. I go up to Broadway shows in New York twice a year, and for me to go to the bathroom — I have to come out of the theatre, go across the street, and go in through a locked door. There’s a guard inside; I hammer on the door, he lets me in, I go up to the 5th floor on an elevator, and then I go through a maze of hallways to get to the bathroom — across the street from the theatre! So you don’t think I appreciate the Wilson Center? This is a top-notch facility.

Q: Would you recommend the Wilson Center to family, friends, or others?

A: Yes! I’ve taken family and friends to the Wilson Center. The volunteers are always very accommodating—it’s great. It’s all been a very good and enlightening experience.

A: Since the first year you offered it, so . . . going on four years, I believe.

Q: How often do you utilize your membership at the Wilson Center?

A: I go to every Broadway show, musical, or play.

And I generally do maybe five concerts a year.

Q: What has been your favorite experience as a member?

A: Tony Bennett was pretty amazing! That’s probably my favorite show experience, because he’s a bucket list performer. We got to meet the Midtown Men, which was exceptional because we got to go backstage and get photos with them.

The Righteous Brothers were the same. It was very cool; they were very friendly.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of being a member and why?

A: The early access to the best seats. But you know, I like the VIP (treatment). The biggest thing is knowing that I’m contributing to the theater itself—contributing to the longevity of the theater.

I just love the caliber of shows that we’re bringing in and I want to contribute to making it work.

Q: What’s it like to be a member on the day of a show?

A: You get to cut the line. You go to the VIP kiosk to get scanned in. Then you can go straight up for some comfortable lounging before the show, with appetizers and hors d’oeuvres from one of the local restaurants, so you get to try something

Q: Would you recommend becoming a member to friends and family?

A: Oh, absolutely! We get so much out of the theater. It’s just a wonderful experience and I recommend it most highly.

Vienna Boys’ Choir More Than Seven Centuries of Song

T

he Vienna Boys Choir, renowned as one of the finest vocal ensembles in the world for over five centuries, is a frequent visitor to North America, performing throughout the country in everything from houses of worship to great concert venues like New York’s Carnegie Hall and Chicago’s Symphony Hall. The enormously popular chorus is actually comprised of four separate ensembles of boys between the ages of 10 and 14.

The Choir can trace its history as far back as the 13th century but it was formally established at Vienna’s Imperial Chapel in 1498 by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. Until 1918, the boys sang exclusively for the court. In the 1920s, the choir was reestablished as a private organisation. Since 1926, 2482 chorister of the Vienna Boys’ Choir have sung 1000 tours in 97 different countries, enchanting audiences worldwide with everything from medieval to contemporary music. The choir also performs children’s operas and world music.

atti LaBelle began her career in the early 1960s as the lead singer and front woman of the vocal group, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles; the group released “Lady Marmalade,” which became an iconic disco hit and propelled them to the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

LaBelle launched her successful solo career in 1976 and became a mainstream star with hits such as “If You Only Knew,” “New Attitude,” and “Stir It Up.” She won a Grammy in 1992 for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance on the strength of the album Burnin’. Her second Grammy followed shortly for her album Live! One Night Only.

In addition to her musical prowess, LaBelle has had notable roles in film and television; she hosted her own lifestyle TV show and competed on Dancing With the Stars. Q: How long have you been at Cape Fear Community College?

I started as a temporary maintenance worker four years ago. I worked as a temp for a year and then I applied to join the Housekeeping staff three years ago.

Q: What do you do here at the Wilson Center?

I am a lead custodian at the Wilson Center. I oversee the housekeeping and custodial operations of the entire building, including the student wing. I make sure this place is presentable and up to standards for all events held here. Those stanchions and trashcans need to shine, and I make sure they do. The backstage area needs to be ready for the next set of celebrities and performers, and the staff and I make it happen.

Q: What is your favorite part about working at the Wilson Center?

I love working with the House Managers, especially Kathleen. But, putting that aside … my favorite part is making deadlines to be ready for showtime. I love seeing happy guests while they’re here for a show, enjoying being in the building. I enjoy being able to work under pressure and meeting the challenges each show throws at us — and working with great people.

Q: Is there something about the Wilson Center that has wowed you?

I’m impressed with the tightness of the team here, the camaraderie ... How fast we have grown into such a big and important part of the community.

Q: Is there something about CFCC that has impressed you in your time here?

I’m really impressed with how important the students are to us. They truly always are at the forefront of our decisions.

ity Ballet is the region’s premier ballet school and performing company. he Choral Society, a mainstay of the Cape Fear region music scene for 68 years, will perform two concerts in their fourth year at the Wilson Center. The 100-member chorus is led by director Paula Brinkman and accompanist Byron Marshall.

best-known and best-loved spirituals, including “Ain’-a That Good News” and “Elijah Rock”, as well as holiday spirituals such as “Go Tell It On the Mountain” and “Mary Had a Baby”, to help celebrate the season. Soprano Denise Murchison Payton, will fill the Wilson Center with her magnificent voice as our featured guest artist.

Opening Night Beethoven’s 5th Sep. 29, 2018 Wesly Schulz, conductor Four fateful notes begin what has become one of the most important and popular works in classical music—Beethoven’s stormy and victorious Fifth Symphony. The composer’s lighter side is revealed in his ballet suite, The Creatures of Prometheus.

Rhapsody in Blue Oct. 14, 2018 Grant Llewellen, conductor Eliza Bragg, soprano Makoto Ozone, piano Cherokee Chamber Singers Gershwin captures the soul of the Roaring 20s in his sweeping Rhapsody in Blue for piano and orchestra, while Copland evokes idyllic country life in Appalachian Spring.

The Cherokee Chamber Singers join NCS to share music reflecting the Cherokee culture, making this program an unforgettable tribute to America’s rich heritage and future.

Our Students, at Work Selina Harvey Production Services, Wardrobe & Hair Q: What program are you enrolled in here at CFCC? A: I just completed my first year in the American Sign Language Interpretation program. My goal is to become an interpreter for Theatre, music, and comedy.

Q: What is your favorite class from your program so far?

A: Probably Analytical Skills for Interpreting. We spend a lot of time looking into the meanings behind colloquialisms in the English language, it’s very interesting.

Q: What is your favorite class from outside your program?

A: Last semester I was the vocalist in the Jazz Ensemble class and actually got to sing on stage at the Wilson Center. Not many people can say that!

Q: What do you do at the Wilson Center?

A: I work backstage on the Broadway shows doing either wardrobe or hair. I also work in Production Services; I help the marketing team, VIP services, and event set-up and breakdown. So one day I may be backstage changing out wigs during the show, and the next day I might be hand drawing chalkboards or picking up gluten-free snacks for our artists. I’m all over the place!

Q: What is your favorite part of working at The Wilson Center?

A: I’ve met so many awesome people working there! So many different personalities and so much talent in one very large building.

What to look for: • Reseller sites are required by law to disclose that they are a Reseller or a Resale Marketplace, not the ticket seller (it’s usually in the fine print at the bottom).

• Reseller sites often will not allow you to select specific seats, or tell you what seats you have until after you’ve purchased them. They may also claim to have tickets available before they go on sale.

Getting to the Center From the North (via I-40E):

Follow I-40E into Wilmington and turn right onto US-74 W/Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, heading towards downtown Wilmington. Continue for 4.7 miles, until the parkway becomes 3rd Street. Turn right onto Brunswick Street, then left on 2nd Street. This will take you directly to the north entrance of the parking deck.

The Wilson Center is across Hanover Street from the parking deck.

From the South:

Follow US-421 north toward Wilmington onto S. Front. Continue for 1.8 miles.

Turn right onto Hanover Street. Turn right into the Hanover Parking Deck.

Parking:

We are delighted to provide parking just steps away from the Wilson Center directly across the street in the Hanover Parking Deck and CFCC Lot #2. To ensure guest safety, Campus Police patrol this deck as does our private security.

Enter from Hanover Street or 2nd Street.

The Hanover Parking Deck has a total of 1,160 parking spaces, including 22 for ADA parking. Parking rates are $5 per event per vehicle; cash only, please.

An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection.
