The Schultz Family

Hey neighbors! Meet the Schultz family! They’re from Wisconsin but got to Canyon Creek as fast as they could.

Share with us the names and ages of everyone living in your house, including your pets.

We are Brent and Colleen Schultz. Our kids are Grant (7) and Cole (4). We also have a dog named Bella (11 in non-dog years).

Grant is a first grader at Prairie Creek Elementary, and Cole is in Pre-K at First United Methodist Church of Richardson.

We adopted Bella from a rescue in Pearland. She is a sweet and shy Finnish Lapphund mix with a very crooked nose who loves the rare Texas snowfall and hates thunderstorms.

Brent is the chief of staff for Boeing in Richardson. Colleen is an in-house employment lawyer for Texas Instruments.

We are high school sweethearts from Watertown, Wisconsin. We met on a school trip to a Six Flags park near Chicago and started dating shortly after going to a Prince concert together in 1997 with mutual friends.

We built a house with 3rd Street Custom Homes and moved in on December 28, 2017.

What brought you to Canyon Creek? Where did you live before you came here?

After leaving our home town and going to college together at the University of Wisconsin, Brent began working for Boeing at Johnson Space Center while Colleen attended law school at the University of Virginia and then moved to Houston. In 2010, we relocated to Dallas and initially lived in Lake Highlands. We decided to move to Canyon Creek for the natural beauty, great schools, and shorter commutes.

What do you love most (so far) about living in Canyon Creek?

We love the big, beautiful trees, friendly neighbors, and the fun Halloween decorations on Ridge Crest Drive.

Tells us a favorite story about your family (funny, sentimental, etc.).

We sabered a bottle of champagne with a sword while celebrating our first wedding anniversary in Whistler and ended up getting a saber of our own to help make celebrations with family and friends more festive. We hope to break it out at a future Canyon Creek Wine

Where do your kids attend school?

Tell us about your pets: Where did you get them? Do they have any unique tricks or quirks?

What do you do for a living?

How did the two of you meet?

When did you move to Canyon Creek?

Society event!

What do you do for hobbies or for fun?

We like to travel, cook together, cheer for the Wisconsin Badgers, attend theater and symphony shows, and watch bad reality television. Brent formerly blogged about television for The Houston Chronicle.

What do your kids do outside of school? Sports teams, etc. How do they like the neighborhood so far?

Grant plays baseball and tennis, and does gymnastics. He will be starting basketball soon and loves doing science experiments and making art. Cole does basketball, soccer, and dance, and loves “bad guys,” especially Darth Vader. Both boys love their new neighborhood and having lots of kids around.

Anything else you would love for your new neighbors to know about you?

We look forward to meeting more of our neighbors out and about and participating in this fun community.

Last one: Do you have any special family traditions for Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving morning means monkey bread and the Macy’s parade in our house. In the afternoon, we buy our Christmas tree at Sandone’s while the turkey roasts and decorate it.

ROSCOE

This month, meet a rescue-turnedagility dog in the neighborhood! It’s Roscoe!

Tell us your names and your pet’s name.

My name is Amy Acosta and my dog is Roscoe (aka ‘Bubba’).

What breed is your pet?

German shepherd mix. We guesstimate he is about three years old.

Where did you get your pet and how long have you had him?

In July 2017, I did what I normally don’t do. I acted before overthinking about a situation. I agreed to foster Roscoe through a local rescue group called The Street Dog Project to save his life. He was a stray on the streets picked up by Dallas Animal Services, and he was one hour away from euthanasia. He had been hit by a car and was heartworm positive. Due to his injuries, he required hip surgery & subsequent rehab for several weeks. After that was done, he had the weeks-long heartworm treatment. Despite his medical condition, he always had a friendly & sweet temperament. When a potential adopter for him came forward, we realized we couldn’t let him go. He was perfect for our household! It turned out to be one of the best and most rewarding decisions we’ve ever made.

How long have you lived in Canyon Creek?

We’ve lived here since 2005.

Tell us about your family.

We are empty nesters! Our two kids, Robert & Jennifer, are grown, thriving adults living in southern California. So it’s just me and my husband, Anthony. And of course, Roscoe!

What do you love most about living in Canyon Creek?

We love the beautiful mature trees in the neighborhood and love being on the golf course. Richardson is one of the very best locations in the metroplex. It’s near everything you want to get to! Most of all, we are thankful for all our neighbors. Everyone is friendly and helpful and CC has the best parties!

Share with us a funny or awesome story of living in Canyon Creek.

Some years back when we had those terrible winter ice storms everyone had cabin fever. So one of our neighbors suggested an impromptu “Winter Ice” get-together at her house. With the roads undriveable, no one was able to go shopping. So everyone just brought whatever wine, drinks, or snacks they had left in the house. As Texans, we nervously shuffled over to her house, hoping not to fall and break any bones along the way! It was one of the most memorable neighborhood events ever!

We hear your dog is pretty amazing. Tell us about him.

One GREAT thing about Roscoe is he’s not a morning person! He loves to sleep in and have “coffee talk” instead. Squirrel-chasing is also

a favorite pastime and doesn’t hesitate to say “hello” to all the golfers!

Seriously, to say we’re proud of Roscoe is an understatement. We’ve had him about 14 months and he’s come a long way from being a street dog. He’s our sidekick and he goes almost everywhere we do. We started basic obedience at What a Great Dog in Richardson in February this year. We enjoyed it so much that we kept going with our training. We are currently in foundational training in agility and are very close to being promoted to agility novice course work. And who knows, if we’re still having fun, maybe we’ll try a competition or two?!

Anything else you would love for your neighbors to know about your pet?

Roscoe loves his walks! If you put all the walks we’ve taken with him back to back, we’d probably make it to China by now! Roscoe keeps us from being lazy. Rain, shine, sleet, or snow, we’ll be walking! If you see us, say hello! P.S. Roscoe has one quirk: He hates the sound of UPS / FedEx trucks. We think he might have been hit by one. So if you see a dog barking and lunging at them, it’s probably us!
