HEAVY WIND AND RAIN throughout the area on Wednesday brought down trees in various locations. Crews were out cleaning up throughout the region, which fortunately did not have the extensive power outages that were experienced in Lehighton and the Lehigh Valley. Storms predicted for later in the week were less intense, though they did produce some significant rainfall. JP: Seth Isenberg

At the Pocono Mountain School Board meeting on June 26, Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Robison praised East High School Special Ed Teacher Beth Karchner and Tobyhanna Elementary Center Teacher Shannon Wagner who recently retired. “I consider both as friends and collectively they bring 61 years’ service to the district.” Robison also named Kinsley Shoprite’s Amazing Teachers for June — Stacy Nalesnik, a seventh grade math teacher from East Junior High School and Amy Martin, AP world history teacher from East High School. Robison closed out her report describing the district’s digital magazine, Hyped. “The magazine is a collaborative effort of both East and West High Schools and recognized for creativity,” Robison said. “The Fall and Spring issues produced graphics, research, interviews, and photo shoots which highlighted the best of our high schools.” Pocono Mountain West math teacher Tom Brogan presented Maggie O’Brien of the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s Scranton office with a check for $9,491,
proceeds from the Harlem Wizards fundraiser game. O’Brien stated, “There have been over 300 wishes granted to children. MakeA-Wish gives children with critical illnesses renewed strength to fight their illnesses bringing families closer together and uniting entire communities. Proceeds from this check will go directly to Make-A-Wish for a child in the Pocono Mountain School District.” Tim Mulligan, president and CEO of Communities in Schools of Eastern PA addressed the board on his organization stating, “CIS is a national network in twentyseven states supporting 1.8MM students. We seek to keep kids in school, and to identify problems. CIS has funding opportunities and in Eastern PA we are in four counties and 13 school districts.” Board member Ronald Byrd asked what specifics CIS can perform. Mulligan responded, “we can provide individual plans for schools on how to decrease chronic absenteeism.” After consulting with students, teachers and parents, the board agreed to change the schoolboard meeting times to 6 p.m. so that more individuals can attend.
