Weatherly Festival returns this weekend

TROPICAL STORM HENRI caused considerable damage around our area. Road damage like that above, along Lehigh Gorge Drive between Weatherly and White Haven, and that below, along River Road in Kidder Township east of White Haven, with a closeup at the bottom, show the power of the up to 6 inches of rain received in a short period of time on Sunday night. PennDOT has closed River Road until repairs are completed.

The annual Weatherly Festival will be held at Eurana Park on Friday, August 27 from 5 - 10 p.m., and on Saturday, August 28 from Noon - 9 p.m.

Live entertainment will be provided by the 60s and 70s soft rock group, Sovereign Soul, on Friday from 7 - 9 p.m., by Just Us Polka on Saturday from Noon-2 p.m., and

by North of 40 on Saturday from 5 - 9 p.m.

The festival will feature a tricky tray raffle, which will be located at the Festival Committee tent, and numerous craft and vendor stands. Local churches and organizations

will be offering home-cooked foods and baked goods. The beef and beer tent will also be available for those over the age of 21.

Bounce houses for the children will be provided at a cost of 25¢ a trip for their enjoyment on Saturday.

Admission and parking are free to the public, and parking is available in the ballfield.

Handicapped parking will also be provided.

The festival is fun for the whole family. Come out and enjoy the end-of-summer festivities.

Signs, Signs

by Seth & Ruth Isenberg The long-planned construction of a main entry into the Lehigh Gorge State Park below White Haven is underway.

Excavators are busy cutting a path from Route 940 to a large new parking lot below Dam2 Road. The project will feature better rafting company entries, and will give visitors a full restroom building with flush toilets.

The project will also mean that visitors will be directed around White Haven’s business district, which has for decades welcomed trail users for this portion of the park’s trail.

Visitors coming off of Interstate 80 are going to need to know that there are businesses a short distance away. Answers seem to be for new signs, as proposed at the August White Haven Borough Council meeting, both locally done and in cooperation with PennDOT and the State Park itself. The signs will need to direct visitors to welcoming businesses.

Time is short to get the location of the first signposts selected and then completed and erected. The project may come together via the borough and the Greater White Haven Chamber of Commerce, and possibly the Lions Club. Contact members of those organizations if you want to be involved, and prepare to spend some money for a sign of your own.

It’s important to keep White Haven on the map and in the minds of visitors to our area. Showing them the way is how we keep White Haven a vital part of the Lehigh Gorge State Park experience.

The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend a third vaccine shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine for those with a range of conditions, such as recipients of organ or stem cell transplants, people with advanced or untreated HIV infection, active recipients of treatment for cancer, people who are taking some medications that weaken the immune system, and others. Weatherly accepts offer for sale of train station

Weatherly Borough council voted to accept an offer from Weatherly businessman Daniel Huang for the former borough office building and restored train station. Huang offered $125,000. He was also the top bidder of three bids in February when bids were first sought, submitting an offer of $116,000.

On this round, Huang was alone with an offer. The only other submission was a letter from the Weatherly Area Museum, who repeated their offer to lease the property.

The former Lehigh Valley

Railroad station was bought by the borough in 1973 after the railroad had abandoned the structure due to the end of passenger service, and more recently freight service to Weatherly. The property will now return to the tax rolls.

Huang will be restricted to renovations that keep the ‘architectural integrity’ of the old train station. In February, after his first bid was rejected, he shared with this reporter that he’d like to open a restaurant in the building.

In other business, council approved accepting a $1,500 per year option payment from a company that is looking

to locate a cell tower within Eurana Park. Once the site is determined viable, the company will work to attract a tower developer. There are no specifications at this time, but it is thought the tower would stand 150 feet.

The borough will spend about $13,000 to cut shrubs and trees out of the Black Creek (Hazle Creek) from the bridge south to beyond where the trail head parking lot is beginning to take shape. Having the shrubs and trees out will greatly reduce the hazard of debris collecting in a heavy storm.

The proposed new burn ordinance will be advertised.

There was some discussion about how burning can disturb the neighborhood, with some feeling that light burning should be allowed – like for personal papers.

Council member Chipper Farrow asked about seeing a list of those properties that are heavily delinquent on their electric bills. There was discussion, but no action taken.

Council unanimously approved applying for a local share grant to pay for a new police SUV. With business wrapped up, Georgia Farrow of the VFW Post thanked the borough for its support for the upcoming 9-11 remembrance. There will be an open house from 1-4 on Saturday 9-11 with a display about the events of 9-11, and also featuring a piece of the World Trade Center. There will be free refreshments. She asked for use of the borough parking lot for that day, as they are hoping for a big turnout.

It was agreed to advertise requests for proposals for installing traffic emitters for

emergency vehicles onto the traffic signals at Route 940 at Moseywood Road, and at the Route 940 intersection with the Interstate 80 ramp onto the PA Turnpike.

Penn Lake Dam update Penn Lake’s Dam Advisory Group has been busy working on paperwork for a probable FEMA Flood Mitigation Assistance grant that could be used to pay for pre-construction engineering. On August 2, Paul Rogan and Penn Lake Borough’s grant consultant Jim Brozena participated in a conference call with PEMA and FEMA to clarify some remaining issues surrounding the grant application.

The FEMA FMA grant requires a 25% match. There is a period of performance during which expenditures by the Borough would count towards the match. The window for spending by the Borough

that should count towards the match opened on October 1, 2020. This allows the Borough to enter into a contract with Streamline (the engineering firm selected to perform the initial engineering assessment needed for the dam and spillway improvement project) and get work started.

Official notification of grant awards will occur in October.

Sernak Farm honored on 100 years of farming

Over 140 distinguished guests, elected officials, Packer Township and Carbon County residents, friends, and vendors joined on August 17 to congratulate Sernak Farms on attaining 100 years as a family farm. Steve and Ethel Sernak purchased a 79 acre farm from its previous owner in 1921. Over the years the Sernak family has grown that number to 500 acres of owned farmland and another 500 which is leased or rented for farming. They sell Christmas trees each year, and operate a farmstand in season.

Seth’s Sightings

Six inches of rain from a hurricane that was over New England was our Sunday booby prize. On a day that I’d hope to be watching the Air Show from the stands at Pocono Raceway, I spent hours watching rain fall, and fall instead. The Air Show performance was cancelled.

Our home is over a small spring, and we get water in the basement when there’s heavy rain. We had water in a couple of weeks ago, and were just dried out when Henri sent its band of rain towards us. As I write this, there’s some mopping up to be done. And some yard cleanup, too.

On the good side, we have some new flowers blooming, as the soaking made the plants happy.

Ruth and I have been working in. No events this week.

We have primarily been reading a cute book — A Scourge of Pleasantries, along with a mix of other books from a range of authors from Louis L’Amour to Terry Pratchett. Martin Walker’s The Coldest Case has arrived to keep us more company as we each recover.

Sightings include a couple of flocks of turkey out wandering beside the roads near Weatherly and also south of White Haven. There are lots and lots of deer, especially around the apple trees that are loaded with fruit, and dropping much of it now. One of our neighborhood stray cats has had kittens — we can hear them at night. I hope they were in a safe place during the storm.

I am ready for the big college football kickoff weekend. The NFL pre-season games are just teases, though the injuries to key players are real enough. I box score surfed sports this week, seeing if the Phillies are playing good ball again, and seeing what good results can be found in other sports. Elena Delle Donne’s comeback game was exciting and here’s hoping she remains healthy. Last week’s win by A.J. Allmendinger on the Indy Road Course was amazing, and Ryan Blaney’s win this Sunday at Michigan was exciting. College football will fill in the gaps for me.

This is the weekend for the Weatherly Festival in Eurana Park, Friday night 5 to 10 and Saturday noon to 9. Come out for a fun event and to support

the local organizations that have booths. The Eagle Arms show is at Split Rock on Saturday and Sunday at the Galleria — 9-4 and to 3 on Sunday.

Back in the Garden — the Woodstock show, is at Mauch Chunk Opera House this Saturday night, showtime at 8 p.m.

The 70s Flashback Band has a two day, two show booking at Knoebels over Labor Day

Weekend Sunday and Monday. It should make for a great wrap up for the daily operating season there. It will be nice to be back on the road again.

Knoebels will be open the opening weekend of the Bloomsburg Fair this year.

We’ll be pulling for good weather all these next few weeks — we certainly have had enough rain.

Enochs achieves Eagle rank

Michael Enochs of Troop 25, White Haven area, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest Rank in Scouts BSA. He has been an active member of scouting since being a Cub Scout in New York before his family moved to White Haven, where the entire family has been active in the community. Michael’s Eagle project was the tying of the older St. Paul’s Church brick structure with the newer Community Center by the creation of a colorful mural depicting the St. Pauls’ Church in its wooden-clad days, amidst the trees and hills, in the passageway between the buildings. The project included 18 volunteers working in small groups due to Covid-prevention measures in the passageway over 120 hours to create the artwork. Michael received the Award, along with 4 Eagle Palms at the Court of Honor on Saturday, August 21, with family, members of the community and Scouts in attendance. He also received congratulatory resolutions from local, state and national office holders to acknowledge his achievement.

The Troop has been quite involved the past few weeks with summer camp, trail clean-up, three Scouts starting their Eagle projects, receiving Good Citizen awards from Weatherly American Legion, a fossil hike in Freeland and other meeting activities.

Cranberry Quilt Guild back to regular meetings, activities The Cranberry Quilt guild is back in full swing to its monthly meeting schedule.

Meetings began midsummer with a July brown bag picnic. The club’s newsletter has also been published to bring members up to speed with continuing meeting schedules

and upcoming events.

A long-anticipated quilt show is being planned for 2022 with all details still being finalized. A raffle for the guild’s handmade quilt, shown at right, and other handmade items is still in progress and tickets are available from

any member and will also be available at some upcoming community events in the area.

The Quilts of Valor project has been extremely successful throughout the area with many patriotic quilts being presented. The response from veterans and their families

When the cheering stops: Colleges that no longer play the pigskin game

The college football season gets underway this week, and the game’s return is a welcome relief after the pandemic-ridden 2020 season. But as millions of fans get ready to cheer for their favorite teams, many more fans have only memories--of a game once played on their campuses but played no more. Once there, then gone forever.

Even though there are more colleges playing football today than ever before, there was a time--decades-worth of time-when the number of football-playing colleges declined significantly. Why? It was about the paradigm that used to be, namely, that the cost of football was borne by allocations from the college general fund--just like everything else.

It wasn’t until the 1970s that the paradigm shifted. Donors, alumni especially, would be asked to make football a priority. With the benefits of playing the game acknowledged – and a financial strategy for playing it (including media revenue) – the number of schools playing it increased.

That said, for a very long time, “contraction” was the name of the game in college football. I started paying attention to this subject when I noticed that some larger schools had dropped the sport, the University of Vermont, in particular. The Catamounts dropped the game in

1974. And then I noticed that UVM wasn’t the only New England school to say no to football. Boston University called it quits in 1997, and Northeastern followed in 2009.

Those are recent occurrences, and they certainly weren’t the first. Catholic colleges and universities figure prominently on the list. The game’s demise on those campuses represented a stunning turn of affairs because many of those schools were nationally prominent back in the day.

The Catholic exodus from college football began before World War II and continued for decades. It’s a long list, too (last year of play in parenthesis). DePaul University (1938), Providence College (1941), Gonzaga University (1941), and Creighton University (1942) came first.

After the War, other Catholic schools followed, including St. Louis University (1949), St. Bonaventure (1951), Marquette University (1960), Xavier University (OH) (1973), Seton Hall University (1981), St. John’s University (2002). St. Mary’s University (CA) (2003).

Notre Dame and Boston College are the only major Catholic schools playing the game today.

Younger fans may not realize just how good Catholic football was in the early to mid-20th Century. For example, in 1939, St. Mary’s CA beat Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl. In 1950, Xavier beat Arizona State in (the no kidding) “Salad Bowl.” Duquesne finished in major football’s Top Ten in 1941, and—for a time (mostly in the ‘30s)—

the Dukes had one of the top winning percentages in the nation. St. Mary’s played marquee games against Notre Dame, California, UCLA, and Southern Cal. The Gaels finished #5 in the country in 1931. Marquette also played a national schedule, including Michigan State, Kansas State, Wisconsin, and Arizona.

That’s not the complete story, though. Several Catholic schools –Canisius College (Buffalo, NY) is an example— restarted programs, bringing back football and playing it at a lower level – at least for a time. Canisius dropped football a second time in 2002,.

St. Mary’s followed suit in 2003.

But many other schools— Duquesne University, for example—continue playing outside the bounds of major college football.

The football exodus of Catholic schools was dwarfed by the biggest storyline of the 20th Century. The University of Chicago left the Big Ten in 1939, citing irreconcilable academic issues with football. Chicago’s exit was a bold statement–an indictment of the game–led by then-president Robert Maynard

Hutchins, who felt that football’s commercial nature (even back then) interfered with the fundamental purpose of higher ed. And Chicago wasn’t just another school leaving the game. The Maroons were a juggernaut in college football.

Chicago played in a large, on-campus stadium; competed as a charter member in the prime athletic conference of the day, had football players with national name recognition (e.g., Jay Berwanger won the first Heisman Trophy); and the school won two national championships and seven Big Ten championships.

The Maroons brought back the game in 1969, albeit not at the major level. UC plays today as a member of NCAA’s Division III. Other private schools followed Chicago’s lead. The list includes (last year playing football) New York University (1952), University of Denver (1960), Pepperdine University (1961), George Washington University (1966), Bradley University (1970), University

of Tampa (1974), University of the Pacific (1995), University of Evansville (1997), and Hofstra University (2009).

That list includes many liberal arts colleges, too, such as Clarkson University (1952), St. Michael’s College (1953), Haverford College (1971), and Swarthmore College (2000), which started playing intercollegiate football in 1878.

Finally, state schools joined the “drop” list, including Texas, Arlington (1985), Wichita State University (1986), Cal State, Long Beach (1991), and Cal State, Fullerton (1992).

But as those schools turned away from football, tons of others embraced the game.

That’s because it’s about what the game can bring, including students, alumni support, and enhanced press coverage. example. Fisher didn’t have a program until 1999 (the first year of competition). The Cardinals joined The Empire 8 Conference, have won numerous conference titles over the years, and have been become regionally/nationally competitive in Division III football. The football stadium and related facilities also serve as the pre-season home of NFL’s Buffalo Bills.

Fisher isn’t alone. About 180 new programs were started between 1978-2014.

By 2015, there were nearly 780 programs, with 11 new programs added in ’14 and ’15 alone. Those additions include The College of Idaho, East Tennessee State, Kennesaw State, and Arizona Christian University. By 2019 (pre-COVID), the number had grown to nearly 900 schools.

And what happens these days when a university president tries to eliminate the sport– as Hutchins did at Chicago 80 years ago? The answer is “trouble,” and a case in point is Alabama-Birmingham. A president’s decision to drop football brought political turmoil—despite an enormous price tag for keeping the game alive. Alumni rallied, fundraised, and the sport returned to campus.

There’s something else, too.

Many schools are upping the level of play, moving from a lower-to-higher division of NCAA play. Georgia Southern University is a good example.

The Eagles went from a small college standing in the ‘20s to no football for 40 years to a resurrected program (1981). Since then, the Eagles have flown, nearly upsetting NC State and Georgia Tech over the past few years. This season, they’ll play Arkansas and BYU. College football has

inarguably enhanced GSU’s name recognition and status–not just athletically but academically.

Still, those campuses where football was, but no longer is today, stick out for me. I grew up in Western New York State and remember leafing through college yearbooks of the late ’40s and early ‘50s.

St. Bonaventure was located about 50 miles from where I lived. I recall reading about the 1948 season when the Bonnies went 7-1-1, beating national power San Francisco, 20-14, and tying another national power, Boston College, 7-7. The lone blemish was an upset, 14-6, at the hands of archrival, Canisius. But the end came soon thereafter–in 1951–following an otherwise good year. The big win came at home against the University of Louisville, 22-21. NFL GreatTo-Be, Johnny Unitas, was a Cards’ freshman that year. In the season finale, the Bonnies finished a winning campaign, beating St. Vincent’s of PA, 28-13. And a finale it truly was.

When players walked off the field, they closed a chapter of school history: there wouldn’t be “next season.” “Disproportionate resources to maintain a football team at a small school” is how President Juvenal Lalor put it. St. Bona’s primary rivals—Canisius and Niagara— dropped football around the same time. Football’s “Little Three,” as it was called, was history.

College football has changed a lot since then--some of it is good, and other things I don’t care for at all, But one thing that will never change is “college football that used to be,” and the schools that used to play the game. Today, the annals of history are where they reside.

He will be backed up by junior Brendan Dennis.

The running back position will be handled by committee.

Junior Kaleb Benjamin (56325, 5 TDs) will share carries with seniors Chase Pugh and Ethan Shudak, the latter who can move to fullback as well.

Senior Cole Kakalecik and freshman Lincoln Bibla will be part of the fullback rotation with Shudak.

“We think we have good

depth in our backfield,” Arcangeli said. “Each player is a little different.” Juniors Magnus Bibla (6-1, 185) and Zach Sheloski (6-5, 210) will be at the all-important H-back/ tight end hybrid position, depending on the offensive set and play call. The position has been held the previous two seasons by All-State players Brandon Niemenski and Logan Arnold.

“In the pro system, winning the C-gap is so important to us. Our outside game starts with establishing the edge,” Arcangeli explained. “We put guys there that have great length, have great athleticism, and can put their hand in the dirt and be like another tackle for us.” The Comets’ top eight receivers statistically from last

year have graduated, meaning a whole new group of wideouts. Among those battling for playing time are Brendan Dennis, Evan Fey, Robert Knight, Josh Hilpp, Nolan Dunnum and Bryce Vieney.

Perhaps the strength of the offense is on the line of scrimmage, where six players return with starting experience under their belt. Juniors Aidan Jardine (6-3, 260) and John Jones (6-0, 270) will man the left side at tackle and guard, respectively. Chris Smolenak (5-11, 225) is the center, and Wyatt Urbanovitch (6-0, 215) and Zach Snyder (6-0, 250) will share time at right guard.

The right tackle is Josh Snyder (6-0, 240).

Make no mistake, the Comets hung their hat on defense last season, and will need more of the same to keep things moving forward this fall. “That was our claim to fame,” Arcangeli said. “Last year our offense did a great job, but we were built behind our defense. They did a great job, and a lot of young guys got a chance to play. We think we could get to the point where we’re as good as last year. We’re not there yet. We have to put a lot of work in. I feel very good about where we could be.”

Up front, the Comets lose

Though they graduated three-year starters Jimmy Hawley and Arnold, Arcangeli still feels good about his five-deep linebacking corps.

Kakalecik is a three-year starter and will play the Mike linebacker spot. Freshman Lincoln Bibla will be at rover, and Shudak will play Will linebacker. Anthony Wan and Ryan Covelens provide the depth.

Ethan Stoltz, now a threeyear starter whom Arcangeli calls the “best safety around,” will anchor the secondary at free safety. Schultz slides back from corner to strong safety.

Arcangeli said the two cornerback positions will be manned by any of seven players, including Dennis, Fey, Knight, Hilpp, Dunnum, Vieney and Nick Miscavage.

Shudak returns as the place kicker and punter, and is backed up by James Barret.

Smolenak and Bret Phillips are the long snappers.

Crestwood’s schedule begins with a home game against Class 6A power Williamsport, and will also include a threegame stretch against Western Wayne, Wyoming Area and Valley View in Weeks 4-6.

“Our schedule’s a challenge, but we’ve had challenging schedules before,” Arcangeli said. “The road is going to be really hard, but we think we have the team to be able to answer that.”

The fact that the squad is close-knit will only help them navigate through it. “The team usually picks three captains, these guys picked five. We are a really close football team.

That means we don’t have selfish football players. We’re here for each other,” he said.

“One of our goals is to go back-to-back,” Arcangeli added. “The goal for us can’t be winning seasons, or win all your home games, or get to the playoffs. Our expectation now has to be we’re going to compete for district championships.

“It’s very hard to get back there,” he said, “but our goal is to put ourselves in the position to have the opportunity to go back-to-back.”

Wreckers have golfers to replace this fall

At Weatherly Area High School, the Wrecker golf team must replace four graduated seniors this season after finishing 8-2 and second to Mahanoy Area in the Schuylkill League Division 2 race last fall. No. 1 golfer Ben Ramirez and senior teammates Antonio Colecio, Ethan Broskoskie and Jake Solonoski all graduated off that Wrecker team.

One of the leading returnees is junior Maddie von Frisch, who placed fifth in the Schuylkill League Girls’ Individual Championships and qualified for districts. “We’re looking for that to continue this year,” head coach Brian Kaminski, now in his sixth season, said during the preseason. “She is working hard and looking to keep progressing through districts.”

Juniors Jack Nemshick and Owen Broskoskie lead the charge for Weatherly, with sophomore Tyler Hinkle returning with experience. Senior Frank Willis, junior Tanner Hinkle, sophomores Jack James and Isobel Hoffman, and freshman Kylie Holman complete the Wrecker roster for 2021.

Kaminski is being assisted again by Mike Nemshick, and the Wreckers are playing their home matches back at Mountain Laurel Golf Club near White Haven.

With all six starters returning from last year’s 9-1 campaign, Mahanoy Area is eying a second straight Schuylkill League Division 2 championship run.

Game Commision offers tour

Pennsylvania Game Commission Northeast Region will host a free state game lands wildlife habitat vehicular tour to highlight habitat enhancements, infrastructure improvements and hunting opportunities, Sunday, Oct. 3, on State Game Lands 57, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Game Commission personnel will be on hand to explain points of interest. Fourwheel-drive vehicles with high clearance are required for this 30-mile, self-guided driving tour that will take about three hours to complete. The route will start at the game lands parking area on Mountain Springs Road just off of State Route 487. Each vehicle will be provided with a map and brief explanation of wildlife habitat management.

Lehigh Fishing Company owner creates fishing rods by hand

by Alex Zidock, Jr. You can almost hear the bubbles and splashes of the mighty Lehigh from Scott Belisle’s home-workshop in White Haven. The jump from an Army paratrooper, to a stint as an engineer to a fishing rod builder wasn’t always easy but once he was hooked on building a better fishing rod it’s been smooth sailing.

“I tell people it was twoand-one-half years of blood, sweat and tears, and many prototypes to perfect the process that goes into my rods.

I didn’t rest until I came up with a good product, he said.

“I wanted to show people what it’s like to have a good quality American-made rod in their hands.”

He owns a patent for fishing rod blank design that sets his rods apart from the rest, and his growing customer base is snapping up rods as fast as he can build them. Belisle is one of the very few people in America manufacturing fishing rods from scratch.

“Many people mistake me for a custom rod builder, I’m not. I make the blanks, so I’m considered a manufacturer. I make all these rods by hand right here in this shop,” he said.

Belisle designed all his mandrels, which are lengths of tapered stainless steel and are basically a male mold of a specific rod. “I have a different mandrel for all 23 rod styles I make,” he said. Lehigh Fishing Company rods range from short ice fishing rods to fly rods for freshwater fishing to an 11-foot surfcasting rod. “I apply carbon fiber, a material used in the aerospace industry because it is strong and light,
