Supt.Young to resign from WASD

The White Haven Aces closed out the 2021 baseball season last Friday night, winning the Valley Junior Babe Ruth championship in front of a capacity crowd at Lehigh Park. The Aces defeated Gould’s 9-1 in the title game, capping an electric 18-1 season. Team members include, kneeling from left: Jake Jeckell, Maison Petzold, Caleb McManus, Liam Off and Matt Miller. On the agenda for this Wednesday’s Weatherly Area School Board meeting is a decision to “recommend the Board approve the resignation of Teresa L. Young [as] Superintendent, effective November 7, 2021.”

Young was hired to be superintendent for Weatherly Area in March of 2017, after a three month-long search. She was chosen from among 11 applicants. She replaced Thomas McLaughlin, who had left to become the human resources director at the Palmerton Area School District.

She came to Weatherly Area after working in the Harmony Area School District, near La Jose, PA, for 19 years. That district is about 184 miles west of Weatherly, just over 30 miles northwest of Altoona.

Attempts to reach Superintendent Young on Tuesday were not successful.

Sometimes it feels as though our area is surrounded. You can’t get there from here, unless you travel Interstate 80.

On Monday, local officials and business people met with representatives of PennDOT to learn about what effect the proposed tolling of Interstate 80 bridges both east and west would have on the community, given that drivers might seek ways to bypass the tolls on local roads.

That likely scenario is concerning, given that there are times now, without the tolls, that traffic is so heavy on Route 940 through White Haven that it’s difficult to cross Berwick Street at Main or Towanda. Since the Chamber of Commerce and the borough are attempting to make the community more attractive to D&L Trail visitors, the prospect of even heavier traffic is daunting.

It’s good to know that officials from White Haven, East Side and Kidder Township all attended, along with Carbon and Luzerne County officials. They raised concerns about the effect of even more truck traffic on roads that are already showing serious signs of wear, and promised to stay up to date with the proposal.

A meeting for the general public is planned for sometime this fall. But concerned citizens don’t have to wait until then to make their voices heard. A good place to start would be your state representative — Doyle Heffley for the Carbon County side, and Gerald Mullery for the Luzerne County side. Ask them to oppose the tolling plan. You can get there from here without going on the interstate, but truckers and through travelers shouldn’t be allowed to create dangerous situations and ruin our roads as a result of PennDOT’s plan.

The McCallus family held their 10th reunion on July 21 at the Hazleton Holiday Inn. The Hosier Clan held their 21st reunion at Tweedle Park on August 3. Prayers were offered by the Revs. Paul, Edwin and George Hosier. Oldest was William Clarence Hosier – 94, and youngest was Billy Ray Hosier Jr., seven months.

The Presbyterian Church of White Haven will have a covered dish picnic this Sunday at Mauch Chunk Lake Park.

Jay Holder Jr. of Spokane, Washington graduated on June 28 as a member of the Spokane Fire Department Recruit School. He attained the second highest ranking of the class, and is now employed as a full-time firefighter. Jay is the son of editors Clara and Jay Holder. He is a 1975 graduate of Crestwood High School. During his high school years, he was a junior mem-

ber of the White Haven Fire Company #1. (In 2021, Jay is a Lieutenant with the department at Spokane’s downtown fire station.)

Junior high schooler Mike Sartori was the Outstanding Player during the recent boys junior high school mini-camp at Pro-Shot Basketball Camp.

The prize ticket from the White Haven Festival and Homecoming featured 102 prizes. Ticket chairperson Katie O’Donnell announced the ticket raised $3,153 via hard work by her committee, and many hours out in front of the Thriftway.

The annual White Haven Fire Company Carnival is this Monday to Saturday at Lehigh Park. There will be rides, games and food. The fourth annual Parade of Fire

Companies will be Friday the 16th beginning at 7.

Among our work evenings last week was a fundraiser for the Pocono Mountain Regional EMS (ambulances) that was held at Skytop. It was a nice Thursday evening for a good cause. On Friday night, I was out at the White Haven Volunteer Fire Company’s Catfish Derby, shown below.

Saturday was the Hobbie Fire Company carnival, which was more about the ride there.

We drove through a beautiful area southwest of Mountain Top. The featured event was a garden tractor pull, shown at right. There was also a live band, and homemade food — which drew a big crowd. We had brought the dogs with us so could not spend as much time there as we might have. Dogs were okay in the tractor area, but not on the main grounds.

We went in search of locally grown peaches on Sunday afternoon. Our go-to farm stand west of Lehighton was closed on Sunday, so we set off exploring and found a place called Faust’s on Route 309 half-way to nowhere. The day was hot and humid, so we substituted for a longer drive into Bethlehem

Winery, a place we’d never been, and found the new name on the place. Once inside, a pleasant, cool tasting building, we met the new owners, who not only make wines, but also make ciders.

Sightings this week include bald eagles atop the cell tower near Fern Ridge. Both of the pair were on the tower, one on the nest and the other on guard. We experienced a heron overflight on one of our rides to Weatherly. And, we see a lot of deer, hoping to avoid them when they pop out of the high grass (good so far this year).

My apple trees are beginning to produce edible green apples, although the deer seem to like them green and funky. I am optimistic about getting the first good ripe ones within a week or so. My wild cherry trees are also producing some fruit, which the birds adore. It looks like a fruitful August.

This is a crazy busy week for events. Musikfest is underway and so is the Carbon County Fair. Ruth and I plan to attend the Fair to see the 4-H animal auction as we have during these past several years (except last year). After our Fair visit, we plan to continue on to Bethlehem to enjoy a night at Musikfest. This weekend has the St. Jude’s Picnic, and on Sunday, the Lake Harmony Parade of Boats fundraiser for

local emergency services. If we can time it, the Mahoney Brothers are performing at Knoebels through Sunday.

Next weekend is quieter, with the Great Pocono Raceway Air Show thrilling spectators both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The Olympics, now over, used to have me checking results of contests each Olympic day. I am not sure what dampened my enthusiasm for it this year, but I think the year’s delay and the lack of on site fans spoiled it some. I concede that the spoiled athletes also were a turn-off. There were moments of great grace and awesome athleticism that I will watch again and again — so yes, I did spend some quality time with the events. I hope there are fans in Paris in 2024.

As for the winter Olympics in China next year, I am curious about Chinese ski areas, and the Chinese ice hockey teams.

Football season is finally upon us. I am counting down the days ahead of the start of college football in particular.

The Mauch Chunk Opera House has a super October on tap, with David Bromberg, Garrison Keillor, and Vanessa Collier featured on separate days, early that month, and the 70s Flashback band coming in mid-month (they sold out their last show).

This week may be the last heat wave of the summer. It comes as our car with the best air conditioning is in the shop (sigh). A hurricane may be along later next week, to make things extra interesting.

On our night stand is The Caves of Perigord by Martin Walker as we await a copy of Walker’s latest Bruno, Chief of Police book which just released early this month.

told council that the number of short-term rentals in the Borough has increased from three to seven properties.

In unfinished business, the restoration of the O’Neil property from last year’s stormwater replacement project was not acceptable, but none of the contractors contacted want to come to do any repair. Council decided to compensate the O’Neils $2,500 for full satisfaction of the borough’s obligation for restoration.

Rosenstock reported that the Borough will receive a grant of $16,111 this year and next to be used for stormwater drainage work these next two years. The grant comes from federal COVID funds.

Attorney Jack Dean advised that the recently passed Act 66 Amendment requires that the council post the meeting agenda 24 hours prior to a meeting.

During public comment as the meeting wrapped up, Josie Sorianno had concerns about the swale on the O’Neil property. She also pointed out two other areas that warrant attention where there may be safety issues.

Double eCybermission win a first for WASD

This is the first year Weatherly Area School District produced two firstplace state winners in the eCybermission Program. These students spent hours working on these projects, and they never met together as a team face-to-face. They began meeting

weekly in November, then almost daily during the month of February to finish the work by the March 3 deadline.

This STEM competition is sponsored by the US Army. The challenge is to find a problem in the community to solve either by doing experiments or

creating a design of a prototype.

With their team wins, ach student will receive a $1,000 savings bond.

WASD has been creating teams since 2010. In 2012 they had their first win, the 9th grade team. Over those years, Weatherly students have received a total of $38,000 in prizes, either $500 or $1,000 savings bonds.

Weatherly’s 6th-grade team tried to find a way to keep the water frozen in Weatherly’s Ice Rink at Eurana Park.

They tested different bases in cups they froze at home to see which stayed frozen the longest. Each cup also had a layer of plastic and water to replicate

layers for the ice rink.

Weatherly’s 9th-grade worked on the problem of acid mine drainage in our creeks and streams in our area, which prevents fish from living in them. The team first experimented with the best water treatment, then they created two prototype designs to place in water to distribute the treatment.

“It’s been so much fun, with many memorable experiences,” says advisor Dr. Katie Leach. She’s especially enjoyed watching the students evolve over the year as they work together as a team.

TBD Improv returns to the Freeland Park Pavilion TBD Improv, an improv theater group from Northeast Pennsylvania, will perform at the Freeland Park Pavilion, next to the YMCA, on Saturday, August 28 at 7 p.m.

In a series of skits, games, and audience participation, the show, with the theme of “What is the Meaning of Life?”, is created entirely on the spot, with suggestions from the audience.

The group is composed of actors from Freeland, Nuremberg, and Weatherly and has been together for five years, performing locally at cafés, parties, and fundraisers.

Brook Selby, one of the original cast members, says, “We want our community to have more fun places they can go to be together and have contact with other humans out there! It’s important for all of

us to know we are all in this together.” TBD Improv seeks to create a judgment-free environment that allows people to see what is good around them, laugh, and connect with others.

In an interview, cast member Amanda Miller reflected on how improv theater intersects with her everyday life, saying, “This journey is full of shared laughter, uncovering

the unexpected, being surprised together, and making connections. It’s in finding things in common with others that we can each say, ‘Aha! I’m not the only one who feels this way or has experienced that.

Soon we find we share more with those around us than we had previously thought, and strangers become people who aren’t so strange to us anymore.”

TBD Improv is planning to do shows on a monthly basis in the Freeland area. Upcoming dates are Saturday, August 28, Friday, September 24 and Friday, October 22. Admission is $2 per person.

The White Haven Aces closed out the 2021 baseball season in dominant fashion Friday night, winning the Valley Junior Babe Ruth championship in front of a capacity crowd at Lehigh Park.
