White Haven, Freeland to host last Six County Convention by Ruth Isenberg

The Crestwood High School Interact Service Club recently held a wristband fundraiser to raise donations for Brandon’s Forever Home in Hazleton. Weatherly to pave seven streets this summer by Jim Vincent At their Monday meeting, Weatherly borough council conditionally approved awarding a $75,646 paving contract to low bidder Pennsy Supply for Maple Street; Younker and Edee Avenues, as well as Dean Grey, Iris, Violet and Killian Alleys. The contract is conditional on the approval of borough solicitor Jim Nanovic who was not in attendance.

Other bidders were Lehigh Asphalt Paving and Construction Co. for $80,574 and Hazleton Site Contractors Haines & Kibblehouse for $87,248. In other business, council approved applying for maybe two statewide Local Shares Account (LSA) gaming grants. Borough manager Harold Pudliner told council that the first, and primary, grant application will be to finish the hiking and biking trail linking the borough to

the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails trail, and thus the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor Trail that stretches to Bucks County. “This is a $1.5 million trail,” Pudliner said. “The first phase will cost $700,000. I don’t know if we have enough to finish it. I think we have a good shot at the grant, because we already have had a grant.” The second grant would be for the restoration of the former Schwab school, but

Pudliner cautioned the trail grant is the priority. “The grant came out January 26, and the deadline is March 13,” he said. “That’s not a lot of time, and there is a lot of work.” The amount of the grant to be applied for is not yet known until engineers get Pudliner final numbers on development of the new trail. Weatherly’s electronics recycling program will be July 9 from 9-11 a.m., and See WEATHERLY, page 3

The Six-County Firemen’s Association started in Hazleton in June of 1903. It’s most likely going to end in June of 2022, but it isn’t leaving without one last celebration, thanks to dedicated firefighter volunteers from White Haven and Freeland. The 118th Six County Convention will take place June 24 and 25. This last convention will be the first one in three years, since the Covid-19 pandemic caused the 2020 and 2021 conventions to be cancelled. The volunteers, many of them among the senior members of the White Haven and Freeland volunteer fire companies, are planning to return many of traditions that have marked previous events—especially the parade of firefighting vehicles from the six member counties. Over the years this parade has attracted large crowds, eager to see the marching units and equipment on display. White Haven will host that See SIX-COUNTY, page 5
