MP Hiebert ‘did nothing’ to help Afghan vet Politician under fire for not taking Ottawa to task for soldier’s piddly compensation Ted COLLEY Staff Reporter

In a scene reminiscient of ‘King Kong,’ Surrey residents were shocked to see a monkey climbing up the Central City tower late Thursday afternoon in north Surrey.

❚NORTH SURREY

Monkey escapes, climbs Central City tower SURREY – Now there’s a Tom ZYTARUK sight you don’t see every day! Staff Reporter SkyTrain commuters and shoppers gaped in astonishment late Thursday afternoon as an orangutan that had escaped from its owner outside the North Surrey Recreation Centre scaled the Central City Office tower. “Unreal – just like King Kong,” Burnaby resident Larisa Cheburko said, laughing. “Hope it’ll be OK – it looks kinda cold up there.” The monkey almost made it to the top of the 26-storey tower by the time the Now went

to press late Thursday afternoon. The pet monkey’s owner, a Simon Fraser University student, was bringing “Pokey” as part of her class presentation on cognitive behavioral therapy. Clearly upset, she declined to give her name, nor would she comment as a crowd grew around her. Surrey firefighters and SPCA workers were still trying to get the orangutan down safely at press time. SURREY – Jim Scott has a bone to pick with Conservative MP Russ Hiebert. Scott’s 24-year-old son, Dan, is a reservist with the Vancouver-based 15th Field Artillery who has served two tours in Afghanistan. During his last tour, Dan was seriously wounded in a training accident in Kandahar. In fact, he almost died. Dan survived, but has been left with significant injuries that limit his ability to find employment. He lost his spleen, his left kidney and part of his pancreas. He also suffered a broken rib and a collapsed lung. “They were training with claymore mines, but those are American weapons and nobody knew how to use them,” the elder Scott said. The claymore is a commanddetonated anti-personnel mine used to protect defensive positions. They consist of convex boxes filled with explosive and hundreds of eighthinch ball bearings. When an enemy approaches, the mine can be fired remotely, sending a lethal spray of the small missiles out in an arc. “Dan’s platoon were lined up and their C.O. had the mines put out in front of them, but they were pointing the wrong way,” Jim Scott said. When the first mine was fired, Dan realized the danger and began

moving to cover. He stopped to warn another soldier and that’s when the second mine exploded, spraying the unsuspecting troops with shrapnel. “The one fellow next to Dan was killed. Dan was very badly hurt, but lucky at the same time,” Scott said. “The kid who set it up, he had no training. He’s devastated about it. He set it up wrong and he blew all of his buddies up.” Dan is entitled to compensation for his wounds, but new rules approved in 2006 mean he’s only allowed $41,411.96, an amount Jim Scott said is less than the damage awards given to people with similar injuries sustained in auto accidents. Scott said that’s not nearly enough for what his son suffered, so he asked his MP – Russ Hiebert (White RockSouth Surrey-Cloverdale) – to help Dan. Scott is a long way from satisfied with Hiebert’s efforts. Dan made his case for a better compensation package in a letter addressed to the minister. Scott took his son’s the letter to Hiebert and asked him to present it in Ottawa. “He took it. He moved it, but in the end, he didn’t advocate for it,” Scott said. “It’s very disappointing.” Hiebert denies doing nothing but deliver the letter to the minister.
