He kept beat at Carnegie
“Starting as a teenager, I snuck out of the dormitory, got drunk on lemon gin and went in a drunken state to a dance in a local small town. That was sure fuel for gossipers — right back to Mom and Dad.”

SURREY – Performing at Carnegie Hall can trigger a case of the jitters, but drummer Damian Chudzinski didn’t skip a beat. Chudzinski, a 17-yearold student at ClaytonHeights Secondary school, was too awestruck at the thought of playing at the famed American music hall to worry about nerves. “It was amazing,” said Chudzinski, who performed in an orchestra with students across North America as part of the American High School Honours Performance Series at Carnegie Hall on Feb. 19. “I wasn’t nervous at all because I was too excited to be nervous.” The entire performance series featured an orchestra, a concert band and a choir. Altogether, Damian’s group played four pieces for a total of about 30 minutes on stage performing for an audience of 1,800, largely made up parents and pals of the performers. “The acoustics were amazing,” he said. Setting foot on the stage of the iconic New York venue that has hosted jazz and rock legends was a thrill beyond measure. As a keepsake, he snapped pictures of the many greats who have performed at the music hall and whose images now decorate the place, jazz giants like Miles Davis and John Coltrane and Duke Ellington.

SURREY – Talk of banning smoking at Surrey bus stops could be premature. When some Clayton residents complained about cigarette smoke drifting into their houses from a nearby bus stop, a city hall manager reportedly sent them a letter outlining a city plan to ban smoking at every stop in Surrey. The letter reportedly went on to say the change would be included in a proposed amendment banning smoking on city beaches and in parks. The plan came as news to Coun. Mary Martin, who holds the city’s health portfolio and took the lead in drafting the existing nosmoking bylaw. “We haven’t discussed anything like that,” Martin told the Now Monday. “I haven’t heard from anybody on staff. I have not discussed this with anybody on council or on staff.” That said, Martin expressed sympathy for the Clayton residents. “I feel for them. It’s something we’re going to maybe have to take a look at.” The smoking bylaw requires smokers to be at least 7.5 metres from the nearest doorway, window or air vent, but the Clayton bus stop that sparked the complaints is nearer to the homes than that.
