New float plane service takes flight in Pitt

A new float plane service between Pitt Meadows and the Victoria and Vancouver harbours will begin later this month. On the heels of last week’s announcement that Harbour Air is cancelling its services between Langley Regional Airport and Victoria, Whistler Air is expanding its service, president Mike Quinn said Sunday. Harbour Air announced late last week that, after four years, it’s cancelling its daily flights between the Langley Regional Airport and Victoria effective May 20. “It comes with great sadness that we announce the cancellation of this service,” said Randy Wright, senior vice-president at Harbour Air. “Our numerous attempts at generating a sustainable market for this route have proven to be unsuccessful. A decrease

in passenger numbers over the years combined with an increase in fuel and operating costs have led to this difficult decision.” But while it’s bad news for the Langley operation, it’s good news for Pitt Meadows. “Pitt Meadows Regional Airport is ideally suited to service the needs of these areas” said airport manager Glenn Ralph. “With the new Golden Ears Bridge two kilometres from the airport, we are minutes from anywhere in the Fraser Valley.” The new service to Victoria will begin the same day the existing Langley service ends, under the banner of the Georgia Strait Connector (a division of Whistler Air), Quinn elaborated. Flights between Pitt Meadows and Victoria will cost $146, which Quinn said is the same price for flights on Harbour Air and West Coast Air between Vancouver and Victoria. Passengers then wanting to travel on to other destinations such as Nainmo will be able to do that “seamlessly,” said Quinn. There will be a morning flight each day from Pitt Meadows to Victoria at 7:30 a.m., and from Victoria to Pitt Meadows at 8:20 a.m. Plus, in the afternoon, it runs in reverse, leaving Victoria at 5:30 p.m., and

Pitt Meadows at 4:30 p.m. “We want to get traffic both ways,” said Quinn, noting there are three planes available – one taking 12 people, one taking nine, and the other up to six. Quinn is hopeful this move will increase tourism between the two cities. But it’s intended to do more than pick up the slack left behind by Harbour Air’s cancellation. Quinn expects commuters might even opt for this service – instead of driving into Vancouver. “People from Coquitlam, Surrey, and the Fraser Valley will no longer have to travel to the downtown float plane base to access these destinations,” he said. “Residents from these regions can also

avoid the hour- long commute to downtown every day by using our affordable 10-minutes express service. With three flights in the morning and three return flights in the afternoon, we will effectively be taking 25 cars off of the road every day.” However, if people actually use this service as a means to commute is the question, said Quinn. “I guess I’ll find out,” he added. “I can’t imagine people doing it all the time,” he admitted. “But, what’s your time worth?” Each flight between Pitt Meadows and Vancouver will be $24. He’s also expecting some passengers will use the new service to leapfrog from the Vancouver or Victoria harbours to another destination, possibly connecting with flights to Nanaimo, Comox, Sechelt, the Gulf Islands, Tofino, and Whistler. There is also talk of a frequent-flyer program being implemented to reward those who use the service on a regular basis. A Maple Ridge woman is struggling to find the $1,500 needed to amputate Elmo’s right leg after it was bitten by a pit bull two months ago. by Amy Judd

Elmo’s leg drags on the ground when he walks. As he shuffles along the floor, his right front leg almost trailing behind him, he can’t feel it, but now sores have started to open on the top of his paw where it comes into contact with the ground. “I don’t know what to do, I am lost,” said owner Shelly Balson. About two months ago, Balson was walking Elmo in their complex when she said a pit bull, off its leash, came up them. The dogs sniffed each other. Then the pit bull grabbed Elmo’s leg and wouldn’t let go. Elmo’s muscle was torn from the bone, and after one $800 vet bill, it will now cost $1,500 to remove the leg – that’s the only option besides euthanasia. “The dog is loose in the complex,” said Balson, referring to the pit bull. “The manager has

The SPCA has been to her house twice.” The SPCA does investigate matters such as this one, and interview both parties involved. They may issue a warning, or determine if a dog is dangerous, and then certain rules apply to keep the dog under control. This will mean it must be kept either

indoors, or “within a fenced yard in an enclosure at least sixfeet in height, six-feet in length and four-feet in width,” according to the District of Maple Ridge bylaws. As the incident happened on private property, the strata rules also apply, although all dogs in Maple Ridge should be on a

leash unless they are in an offleash area. Balson said she took a petition round in the complex, and everybody signed it, and she said management sent around a letter saying all dogs have to be on a leash, but none of that helps her situation now. “I have no idea how I’m going to come up with [the money],” she said. “I almost put him down on Sunday,” she said, tears welling up in her eyes, “but I love him so much.” Balson has taken Elmo to the Alouette Animal Hospital, and she said she is so pleased with their level of care. They have also offered to help cover some of the cost of the operation through their Jackson Fund. Elmo is a Labrador-shepherd cross, and Balson has had him for six years. She lives with her cousin Chris Stevens, and he is also trying to get the money together, but time is running out. “The faster we can get it done, the better it will be for [Elmo],” said Stevens. “If you put him down it’s only $300, but I know there will be times when I come home and call him and he won’t be there,” he added. “That’s what kills me.”

Cuts threaten aspiring young musicians

A Grade 6-7 band program is possibly facing cuts as the school district grapples to find $2.2 million in savings to balance its budget. While no decision has yet been made on this proposed cut to the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district budget, parents have been lobbying the board of education to keep the band teacher’s position so their kids don’t have to go to the high schools for this subject. Instead of Grade 6 and 7 students doing band in the elementary schools, the suggestion has been to have them integrated into the high school band programs in order to save $110,000. Rhyly Bell was in the elementary band

program and said this is the reason she continued in band at high school. She is currently in Grade 8 at Maple Ridge Secondary and continues playing clarinet with the school’s program. “I would actually have been terrified [to play at the high school],” Rhyly said. It was important to her to start band in elementary school, to learn the instrument properly. She has learned to love playing her clarinet in band and the music they’re doing. “Why are arts the first thing to go?” her mother Corisa Bell said. “I’d like to know what other cuts [are happening] within the district.” District superintendent Jan Unwin said in an “ideal world,” the arts programs would be taught by teacher-specialists who could teach arts programming during the time classroom teachers have for preparation.

Flasher arrested

A 36-year-old man allegedly exposed himself to people in the 22400 block of Lougheed Highway at about 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 6. Ridge Meadows RCMP were called to the scene, and found the man a short distance away. They are now recommending charges of indecent act, and the suspect was released with a promise to appear in court at a future date.

A 42-year-old woman, who was involved in an alleged assault with her ex-boyfriend, was arrested after she tried to drive away from the scene drunk. Ridge Meadows RCMP were called out just about midnight on Thursday, May 5, to an apartment complex on 224th Street for a reported assault. As they arrived the woman was just driving away. Some police stayed at the scene to ask questions, while another officer pursued the woman. Golden Ears Bridge will be first in North America to try a new application that will help to dull down the noise levels on the bridge for residents living nearby. However, TransLink spokesperson Ken Hardie said they are not concerned that not only do they not have a plan B – if this doesn’t work – but that it has not been tried on a bridge in North America before. “We’re going to move forward on the bast of this solution, which we did test at UBC,” he said. “We’re really quite confident that we can get a six- to eight-decibel decrease.” He added that TransLink got the idea from a company that has had success with it in China. About 25 residents who

live near the bridge attended a meeting in Pitt Meadows last Wednesday night to hear TransLink’s solution to the problem, and resident Mike Stark said if this method does decrease the noise by that much, then he will be happy. “Compared to what it was before, it is a din,” he said, of the traffic travelling over the noisy bridge deck. “There are people that can’t have their windows open.” TransLink has decided to place a filler into the cavity of the expansion joints on the bridge, and then neoprene strips will be put in between the ribs. “We’ve ordered up the materials,” said Hardie, but they are waiting for warmer weather, as a few days of no rain and at least 10 degrees is needed for the adhesive to work. “We’re working with 3M [adhesives] on a glue that will hold [the neoprene strips] in place properly,” he added. “But technical and weather issues [are] combining to delay the installation of this.”

Hardie said that the intention is to do all of the expansion joints on the north side of the bridge, and in the main span, along with some on the south. Aside from the noise of vehicles going over the bridge, Hardie said residents also expressed concern about people driving too fast over the bridge and causing noise, and the level of the sound wall alongside the bridge not being high enough. “We have and continue to speak with the Ridge Meadows RCMP, and the Langley RCMP for speed enforcement,” said Hardie. He said signs could also be erected asking truckers not to use engine breaks unless necessary, and to appeal to drivers to slow down as the noise level is a nuisance to the neighbours. “One of the things we might have to look at is raising the wall,” said Hardie, or putting more vegetation between the bridge and the residential area. Hardie said he could tell residents are anxious for a fix, and he understands their frustration. “The residents certainly appreciate the complexity of trying to do this,” he said. “Hopefully this will be a fix,”

Those savings helped offset lower tolls on the Golden Ears Bridge by 30 per cent during offpeak hours.

L ocal Mounties made the police force proud for their work getting drunk drivers off our roads. An award in memory of Alexa Middelaer, who was only four when she was killed by an impaired driver in 2008, were given last week to four members of the Ridge Meadows RCMP. These awards were given by Alexa’s parents, Laurel and Michael Middelaer, and the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation. “I want to commend our four officers who received this year’s awards,” said RCMP Supt. Dave Walsh. “Their efforts towards reducing incidents of impaired driving are very commendable.”

Members of Ridge Meadows RCMP were recognized for their efforts in preventing impaired driving.

The Ridge Meadows RCMP members who received the award were Constables Mitch Gordon, Kyle Sametz, and Mike Moore of traffic services; and Const. Tony Eeftink, who was on general duties. In order to be eligible for this year’s award, a police officer must have investigated a minimum of 10 criminal impaired drivers in 2010, and it is open to all RCMP and members of all Municipal Police Forces. “Although not all of our officers were recognized,” said Walsh. “I also wish to pass along my thank you to all of our uniformed general duty and traffic members for all the drinking drivers they have taken off our roads in 2010, and continue to do so in 2011.” “Ridge Meadows RCMP will continue to investigate impaired driving as a priority, to ensure our roads are safe for all to use,” added Walsh. Small step a good one for parks It was in August of 2006 when we first tore a strip off the provincial Liberals for their ongoing policy of turning provincial parks into revenue producing factories. “What is it about the “public” part in “public parks” that the B.C. Liberal government just doesn’t get?” we asked. We railed against them for a virtual anti-park campaign since taking office in 2001. At that time they had already put parking meters in the parks, cut park interpretive programs, and hiked campground fees so much that it was very nearly just as cheap to stay in a hotel. They had also tried, unsuccessfully, to pave a chunk of Cathedral Grove on Vancouver Island. Their logic ran something like this: “We want to cut down some big trees so people can park their cars to go see big trees.” And then they issued a call for proposals to build lodges and helipads in wilderness areas like Golden Ears, and Wells Gray parks. To that we said: “And now the B.C. government wants to put high-end lodges in our public parks so the rich can enjoy B.C.’s wilderness but without the wilderness experience of mosquitoes, lumpy sleeping pads and campfire cinders in your coffee.” So, while it is indeed a small step back – Premier Christy Clark’s announcement this past week that pay parking will be removed from provincial parks is very welcome. Clark acknowledged that the parking fees were wrong and stopped people from using the parks. Will she revisit the whole idea of public parks as a revenue source? We don’t know. But we do know that her acknowledgement and correction of a longstanding policy gives us some hope that she may understand that public parks are for the enjoyment of the public, not just for those who can afford the experience. And, perhaps, it is the first step in a much more rational view of our super, natural outdoors in B.C.

Animal welfare

Owner pleads for leashing Hi, my name is Bella. I am a miniature poodle and admit to being a tad anxious. I have had a few large dogs lunge at me and I am quite terrified on walks. My owner tries to be calm, cool, and collected when we go walking. But she does get a tad nervous, as well, when we see large dogs off leash because of past experience. Here is my request to all fellow dogs.

Malls, jobs needed Dear Editor,

Sharon Russell’s description [Say ‘no’ to malls, April 19 Letters, TIMES] if more malls are built, “cars driven slowly, dense traffic, toxic exhaust, etc.” could be used to paint the picture of the morning exodus from Maple Ridge for commuters to reach their jobs. The reverse happens in the evening. There’s a backup at least from 203rd Street on the Lougheed Highway to Harris Road in Pitt Meadows. If there is a lot more new business development, people could work where they live and lot of those cars would not be polluting in comparison to shopping trips. Those morning commuters are shopping as well, so it’s a double whammy.

Nothing compares to being a Mom Dear Editor,

Of all the hats I have worn, T-shirts I have collected, and goals I set for myself, motherhood has been by far the most rewarding. They say anything worth having is worth working for. The fruits of my labours are two beautiful, honest and loving sons, the older of which has married the love of his life, who in her turn has become the most amazing mother. My grandson was born three months early on April 29, 2010. His first Mother’s Day was spent in the neonatal intensive care unit at Royal Columbian fighting to be with us. This year my daughter-in-law has the reward of having Linden in her arms, bouncing around the room and delighting us with his giggles and belly laughs. Rewarding? Life as a mother is full of rewards. Please ask your owners to have you on a leash, even if you are on your own front yard. Your owners always yell out that you are “safe and friendly” but here is what happened recently that you and your owners need to consider. I was walking innocently with my owner. Two dogs were off leash in their front yard. They came bounding towards me and their owner yelled out... “Don’t worry, they’re okay!” Well I panicked, barking to save my life. My owner tugged me behind her to protect me, which caused me a little more anxiety (she’s no dog whisperer). The “friendly” dogs were threatened by my barking (makes me feel kind of good, considering I am less than half their size). One of the dogs bared its teeth and lunged at me trying to bite my tiny body, the other raced around me. My owner screamed and yanked me to safety and this continued for what seemed like forever. The other dog owner picked me up to kindly protect me from his dogs, but I was extremely annoyed at this point, so I chomped down hard on his hand. So much for a leisurely Sunday stroll. Please convince your owners that even though you may be a “friendly” dog, when you see me in defence mode – regardless of my size – it gets your back up too and then things get ugly. You need to be leashed up, even if you are relaxing in your own front yard.

Unbiased system review is critical Dear Editor,

New Democrat Elizabeth Rosenau perpetuates two myths about Canadian health care in her letter [Let’s talk about health care, April 22 Letters, TIMES] She writes that “our universal health care system… is the envy of many other countries,” yet neglects to mention that when measured against the health care systems of other nations, it now ranks in the mid-20s. She also insists reform means “we could wind up with a radically different U.S.-style system.” This is errant nonsense. It would be counterproductive to adopt an American system that ranks below ours when there are so many higher-ranked health care models from which Canada can learn lessons. Seventeen of the top-ranked health care systems in the world are in Europe: they outperform ours and all incorporate a mixture of public and private health care. Last year the OECD concluded that Canadian health care needs substantial reform and that the private sector must be part of the solution. That message was echoed last month by former Bank of Canada governor David Dodge, who warned, in a report for the C.D. Howe Institute, that the status quo is fiscally unsustainable. The biggest obstacles to improving Canadian health care are the ideologues who regard our half-centuryold system as an article of faith and all would-be reformers as heretics. We must allow our public figures to have an open, honest, and intelligent discussion of health care reform without, figuratively speaking, burning them at the stake. Kirk Brown, Maple Ridge

Community keeps giving to Japan in about $50 in chump change and thought she’d have to donate $100 herself. Little did she realize the generosity of her students, many of whom dug into their own piggy-banks and bank accounts and brought their own money totalling $211. “Boy, did I misjudge the generosity of their hearts,” she said. “One day, one small group with hearts of gold. This made both my pockets and my heart lighter.” Roda ended up donating $422 of her own money to bring their total up to $633 which went to Japan through the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee. “It was a good feeling... we accomplished something,” Blok said. Bonnie Roda’s class at Maple Ridge Christian School had just finished studying a unit on Japan and woke up on March 11 prepared to write their final exam on the subject. To their shock and dismay, Japan had been rocked a few hours earlier by a devastating earthquake that registered a nine on the Richter scale and was followed by a tsunami that caused even more destruction. “It was pretty sombre,” said Adam Blok, a student in Roda’s class, about waking up to the news. Roda felt her class needed to do something for Japan and suggested her students they hold a one-day fundraiser where everyone would bring in some money and she’d give double of they brought. She expected her students to bring

and will be collecting donations to help Japan. Dr. Ken Ginnan, a dentist of Japanese descent who works at the centre, along with his co-worker Dr. Jim Findlay will match all donations made for the Japan relief fund via the Red Cross. Ginnan still has relatives living in Japan, including his grandmother in the main area hit by the earthquake. Findlay, Cascade Dental’s owner, also had family in Japan – his brother and his family – who were there when the quake hit but who managed to get back to Canada safely. Staff will be wearing red and white, which are the colours of the flag of Japan, but also of the Red Cross. The two dentists hope to raise $5,000 during the two-day effort, to help Japan through this natural disaster. During these events, Ginnan will be offering a free consultation for any dental health related questions on Tuesday May 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday, May 13 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Planting leeks in trenches is wise I grow leeks in trenches, which I fill in with compost as the plant grows. I get nice, 10-inch long white stems but the leeks are not very thick. Is it possible that the nutrients from the compost don’t get down to the roots?

Names of summer leek varieties include Varna, King Richard, Lancelot, and Jolant. Winter types include Blue Solaise, Durabel, and Musselburgh. In the past you could identify summer leeks by their very quick growing times (70 to 80 days), while the winter or late fall leeks would be identified as needing about 135 days to harvest. The original longgrowing winter leeks often have dark green leaves, sometimes with purple tinges. But in the last few years, hybrid leeks have been developed with a variety of growing times and leaf shades. Really, you need to try different kinds of leeks in

Taekwondo talent abounds

It may be a method of combat and self-defence, but three students who train in Pitt Meadows are learning there is much more science involved than knowing how to kick and throw a punch. They have all recently competed in competitions, and performed well under the instruction of fifthdegree black belt Chris Law. Ashley Jama, 17, has been training in taekwondo for six years, and competed at the nationals championships last November. The Pitt Meadows Secondary student came second in sparring, and second in patterns, which she said are the most difficult for her. Sixteen-year-old Rani Pickering agreed about patterns, even though she recently returned from the 2011 International Taekwondo Federation of B.C. Provincial Championships, where she competed in Junior Girls Red Belt Patterns, and won the silver medal. He commented that while he does not find any particular aspect of the sport too challenging, like his students do, he knows his training will never really be over. “I can always go higher, I can always be better,” said Law, who started training when he was nine. Runner gets best Mindy Olson was aiming for a personal best in the BMO Vancouver Marathon a few weeks ago, but although she didn’t quite reach it, she did get her best overall finish, and a best-in-class finish. In the 42.2-kilometre marathon on May 1, Olson ran 3:15:38, and came 160th overall. She was only the 10th woman out of 1,399, and finished fourth in her age class of 223 runners aged 40-44. Maple Ridge sisters Kelsey and Allison Campbell played in the Collegiate Water Polo Championships in Bloomington, Ind.

Kelsey Campbell and her Indiana Hoosiers teammates qualified for the NCAA Championship tournament in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to take place May 13 to 15. This is the first time the Hoosiers, ranked 13th in the NCAA, have qualified for the tournament in eight years. Both Kelsey and Allison Campbell, who grew up in Maple Ridge, played in the Collegiate Water Polo Championships the last weekend of April. mittee announced last Monday that the Indiana Hoosiers earned the number six seed for the 2011 NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championship, and that they will play UCLA, currently ranked third, in the first round of the tournament. The winner will then play the winner of the California versus UC San Diego game. Allison also had a successful weekend, as she was voted CWPA southern division player of the year at the CWPA tournament banquet. She was also named to the CWPA first all-conference team. Allison then led her team, the Maryland Terrapins, to a third-place finish in the CWPA tournament – the highest finish ever in school history. The Terrapins, ranked 19th in the NCAA, beat 20th ranked Princeton and staged a huge upset win over 12th ranked Hartwick College, to secure the thirdplace finish. Robyn said Allison contributed six goals and three assists in tournament, and was selected a first team tournament all-star. Allison, a sophomore, finished the season with 56 goals and 32 assists for 88 points, breaking the Maryland school record for most points in a single season. She also recorded 117 steals on the year, which currently leads the NCAA.
