THE TUG THAT TUGS AT LOCAL MAN’S HEAR TSTRINGS
STRANGER DANGER
District issues warning after new incident Girls accosted by four men BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com
School District No. 40 is again warning parents about another stranger danger incident near a New Westminster school. According to a March 17 letter to parents from assistant superintendent Al Balanuik, the latest incident happened Wednesday afternoon outside John Robson Elementary School. Balanuik said two Grade 2 girls were sitting on a bench near the duck pond around 5:30 p.m. when four strange men approached. Two of the men then put their hands on the shoulders of the girls. Balanuik said the girls responded by pushing the men’s hands away and running screaming to the home of one of the girls. The girls described the first man as having light brown hair and wearing black pants, a black coat and blue and red hat. The second man who allegedly touched one of the girls is described has having brown skin and black hair, First reported @ wearing baggy RoyalCityRecord.com blue sweat pants and a red sweat shirt. The girls didn’t provide a description of the other men in the group. This latest incident has little in common with several other stranger contact incidents over the last three months, which have typically involved reports of an older man approaching young boys. Some of those incidents have, after investigation, proven to be misunderstandings and there are discrepancies in descriptions of the suspect and vehicles involved. As in every other letter to parents from SD40, Balanuik reminds parents to review safety tips with their kids including: Always travelling in numbers, reporting any suspicious incidents to trusted adults and immediately fleeing any situation that feels dangerous. Anyone with information on this or any other incident is asked to call New Westminster Police Service at 604-525-5411.

City ‘terrorist’ back in Canada BY BRENT RICHTER REPORTER brichter@royalcityrecord.com
A New Westminster man convicted of terrorism charges in the United States has been deported back to the Lower Mainland. Alfred Heinz Reumayr, 61, was ordered out of the United States by an immigration judge and escorted from Los Angeles to Vancouver International Airport by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers following the end of his prison term. Upon arrival in B.C., ICE officers turned Reumayr over to local RCMP. RCMP Sgt. Rob Vermeulen said other than meeting Reumayr at the airport, the RCMP has no further interest in

Reumayr. “We are aware that he is back in Canada. We are aware that he was charged and convicted in the U.S. and we are not aware of any pending charges against him in Canada,” he said. Mark Jette, Reumayr’s former lawyer who fought his client’s extradition to the U.S. declined to comment on Reumayr’s return. Reumayr pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting terrorism transcending national boundaries in March 2008. According to court documents, Reumayr planned to purchase $10,000 in oil futures and then bomb the Trans-Alaska Pipeline on New Year’s Day, 2000, causing a spike in oil prices and allowing him to make a quick
profit. The documents suggest Reumayr estimated he would make $20 million if the bombing was successful in disrupting oil supply to the West Coast. Reumayr conspired with a former Green Beret and explosives expert, Jim Paxton, whom he had met while serving time in a Texas prison for a previous conviction mail fraud. Paxton then turned informant and provided testimony and taped conversations of Reumayr discussing the plan. Reumayr lost an extradition fight in the courts in 2006 and was sentenced to 13 years less time served in 2008. According to ICE spokesperson Lori Haley, Reumayer is barred from entering the U.S. for 20 years.
